I don’t usually leave reviews, especially not negative ones, but I am left beyond frustrated with the brief introduction I’ve had to this game. I want to make it clear that I am trying to write this with good intentions, and I want to believe Steel Wool has those too, but I cannot in good faith keep supporting this ‘buy now, patch maybe later’ system, as an early adopter of the series, I am utterly done with this ‘era’ of the franchise, and I do believe we’re being taken for fools. I’ll start by saying I had problems, like many, with Security Breach. Game breaking bugs that I had to wait until the big patch to actually get a somewhat playable game. I don’t think it’s fair to consumers to make them wait to make a game playable. Maybe I should have learnt my lesson then! So now, Secret of the Mimic. A £33.50 game and I couldn’t get past the starting area; the manor doors (that are meant to auto open after Edwin’s speech) remained shut tight, even after several frustrating restarts from the beginning cutscene. I’m not the only one with this issue, it’s discussed heavily on the forums. After the game suddenly decided to open them finally, I got into the actual game segment, and it didn’t get better. The game is laggy. The game freezes constantly, I have a decent PC and had issues constantly— any door I had to load seemed like the game had frozen and was in need of a restart, only to gasp back to life after a wild amount of time. The controls for the hand don’t feel great in combination with this, with me often having to input the same motion over and over (the power generators especially seemed hit or miss for if it would register my input) I’m not bothered personally about 60 fps, but this game is locked to it. The game is also very clearly made as a VR game first, which is frustrating- I genuinely wish they hadn’t launched it in this state if it was meant to be VR first and flat mode later, because it just suffers. The stealth isn’t stealth and the chases just aren’t fun. It feels like something is fundamentally lacking, and maybe it’s just my irritation at the bugs and lag seeping into other places, but I don’t think the game should be chase simulator- it felt repetitive by the second one, which isn’t a great feeling. The game feels lacking and I don’t think the smattering of secret codes all over and numpads make up for that. I’m writing this on my phone, so hopefully it’s legible. I’m actually pretty upset, as I’ve been looking forward to this game since its announcement— Fnaf is a big part of my life, but I cannot in good faith recommend this game. I am tired of falling for these grand promises only to be constantly let down, and I wish the team would either not promise so much, or really take their time polishing so this stops happening. I’ve asked for a refund. I might not get it, because I spent a good hour just trying to get the game to actually get to a playable point. If you read this, please save your money. Don’t buy this game in the state it’s in right now. EDIT: Begging people to actually read and use critical thinking skills before leaving me a comment. As I said in my review: - It’s not my PC. I have a high end rig that has no trouble with way meatier games on the highest settings. - The DOOR I am talking about, and many others, as I have wrote over and over again, is not a puzzle door with a solution. It is the door leading to the room that does the musical number, aka, the door that is meant to auto-open. Just because you did not have an issue with this door, does not mean many others haven’t experienced a softlock here. (Someone has said turning your fps to 30 may be a workaround, so I hope that works for any fellow people who have this glitch) - I’m sorry you feel personally slighted by someone not enjoying a game you like, or someone having issues with it where you didn’t. I recommend reflecting on why you are personally upset that someone is upset that a $40 game does not work for some people before leaving a comment about it. Thanks! If you enjoyed the game, I’m genuinely happy for you, but please trust that I had little to no expectations going in beyond ‘’cool!’’ and somehow still ended up feeling like this.Show moreShow less

I was really looking forward to this game... What we have here is a VERY typical modern "mascot horror" type game, similar to something like Poppy Playtime but obviously closer to Security Breach: Ruin, but where Poppy Playtime has its unique hand mechanics that open the potential for unique puzzles and momentum challenges... this game has nothing. It's the baseline gameplay you'd expect for one of these kinds of games but without "that one thing" that makes it at all interesting or special. You're just sneaking through the map and avoiding a single robot threat in the same game of hide and seek for the entire duration, with it only being shaken up occasionally by different sections having you complete a single task on top of it. The only major thing the game sees you doing outside of sneaking past a very forgiving AI is the same "Where's My Water"-type puzzle like 5 times total. The game was clearly built for VR as certain actions like, pulling, pushing or twisting objects requires very exaggerated mouse movements that can only be described as "PC motion controls", you literally have to yank your mouse back towards yourself to mimic the action of pulling a heavy wire. It's actually kinda cool but leaves some things like the pipe arrangement puzzles being very finicky to control, made worse as you often need to complete this puzzle while being actively pursued. I imagine it's better in VR but I also don't think this game would work especially well there either, it's too repetitive and boring ESPECIALLY when this series already has 2 fast and fun VR party games under its belt. Technologically, it's decently sound. I had a fair few moments where the AI would quirk out, and one time where an item I needed to progress randomly teleported to another room - it's still a Steel Wool game. Though it functions well overall and has decently impressive visuals. It's disappointingly short, I played it blind with no guide at all and saw the credits in mere hours. 4 and a half games into their run of this series and Steel Wool still has no clue how to satisfyingly conclude a game. It's as if they don't recognise that despite having a connected narrative each game should end its individual plot with an actual conclusion... or anything at all. Each of their Fnaf games have had laughably abrupt conclusions that feel like a mid-game cutscene that cuts to credits. Imagine if each Harry Potter book / movie didn't have a proper ending to their individual plots but instead just ended without warning as soon as the 3rd act wraps up, with the mindset that a "proper ending" to each part isn't important because it's not the end of the overall story. That's what all of Steel Wool's fnaf games have felt like story-wise and it doesn't seem to be improving any time soon. As well as that, they continue the trend of the game's main story being painfully barebones though has secrets, lore pieces and le epic plot twist to keep fans engaged but I can't help but feel that style of storytelling is becoming more broken the "bigger" these games get and its narrative is still being treated like the $7 indie games of yesteryear. For unsuspecting buyers who don't already know the Mimic book story beforehand, this story is meaningless, confusing with its imagery and seemingly has no buildup at all or meaningful conclusion to speak of. This is an expensive standalone PC and console game so why isn't it being treated like one? If someone not "in the know" was to buy this game from the PS Store and treat it like its own thing (which they're pricing it like it is) then what is there here for them to latch onto? What about the seemingly paper-thin story impacts them in any way? What is this providing that so many other, cheaper games aren't? Well... nothing. Somehow Security Breach: Ruin ended up having WAY more engaging gameplay, story and mechanics despite literally being a free add-on made solely to course correct the broken game it was built on - You're actually way better off just replaying that instead, not like it's any shorter either. With no noticeable building up of the core mechanics as you progress, no major story development throughout and a genuinely laughable run time, this feels like the free first chapter of a mascot horror game, not the paid thing.Show moreShow less

Honestly not worth $40, even if you're a massive FNaF fan. It's a walking sim with the occasional puzzle and Poppy Playtime like chase sequence after dealing with each enemy. If it's on sale then MAYBE get it, but you're much better off watching a YouTuber play it. When they add VR in an update, it might be a bit more enjoyable, but I can only speculate about that. SteelWool, either stick to VR games like HW 1 and 2, or really change up your approach. Stop doing these open free-roam games, it's totally lost FNaF vibe of things. For the love of god, please take the series back to form or if you wanna keep doing 3D with some freeroam, use TJOC as inspiration.Show moreShow less

Bogged down by an ass backwards nothing burger story, chase sequences that have no satisfying beginning middle or end, pointless callbacks that were designed to get youtubers to point at the screen and Wojak in excitement... All this to say the game really is just a giant nothing burger. I left knowing exactly as much coming in (nothing). As a super-fan of FNaF that has stayed up to date through the highs, lows, and everything in between since 2015... yeah, unfortunately this is another low. These characters mean basically nothing to the over-all plot, and it shoves jingling keys at you for no reason, and it just muddles the story of the originals. Id say this is just barely better than Security Breach, mainly because it was actually cohesive and not bug ridden. Lacking polish, but not irredeamable ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The voice acting was rough in some places too. The only thing saving this game is it's Music and Aesthetic. Really getting harder and harder to stay involved with this franchise. The last "good thing" we had was the movie, and even that was pushing it. It's just frustrating. I really do think Steel Wool has the talent capable of making something fantastic, and the closest they've gotten is HW2 and Ruin, but those games still teeter over the edge of "yeah, that was pretty good", where as this game teeters on the edge of "...yikes" Thats all I kept saying during the playthrough. "Yikes". There's nothing mind blowing here anymore but I know there could be. I just don't understand how this keeps getting messed up. 4.5 / 10. Saved by being at least somewhat entertaining and playable. A low bar, but not for FNaF recently.Show moreShow less

I love fnaf man, and it hurts to see such a lackluster entry in the franchise. The gameplay is essentially Poppy Playtime, there is no doubt in my mind on that. Incredibly linear and super generic feeling through and through. I finished this game in 5.9 hours, got the main ending and 14/25 of the secret items through the game so I did try to explore but most of the time it was super unrewarding or just boring. Actually, thats a good way to describe the game as a whole, lackluster and boring. I also want to make a point of how ever "character" used in marketing is just not utilized at all to their best or even their mid-est. Jackie has been the titular character for this game through all the marketing and her involvement in the game can be summed with "hey remember that chase scene from the first chapter of Poppy Playtime?" The best character in terms of utilization and overall presence was the giant whom I will refer to as Music Box Man. I hate to be this negative about a game alot of people were so hyped for but seriously, Security Breach on launch had tons of problems, but it was still fun in an unintended way despite that, this just isn't. Also speaking of Security Breach at least that game made it make sense why the map was so big, this game has actual cartoon logic with how overly complex a factory / showstage can be like man give me back the Pizzaplex I'm not joking.Show moreShow less
