Honestly, I am torn and once again wish Steam would allow a different form of rating than up or down. 6/10 I have obviously played this game a lot: I have found it both unique and relaxing, a way to distract a mind that never wants to shut up, but admittedly Flotsam (a game evidently stuck in purgatory) is the reason I almost never buy games that are in EA anymore. Flotsam has a rather particular, artistic beauty to it, and its gameplay--while at times buggy--is straightforward with little issue; however, beyond just playing for the sake of relaxing, there is no endgame to aim for. While you do go around collecting resources, exploring the map, and growing your floating community, there is not much else to do, and once you get your community to a certain safe level, the game is effectively finished even if you desire to keep playing: there is nothing else to do except collect resources when (and if) needed. This game has been released for a while and I do not understand what is taking so long to complete it or fully release it. While appreciating that I do not know quite what goes into creating a game, I feel that after several years this game is either just a side-project for the devs, or is decidedly without funding. The devs are great; nevertheless, the updates they keep pushing out take forever, and are rather shallow and not at all placating at the end of the day. Many of the updates, even, have changed things that did not need to be changed, that worked perfectly fine to begin with, and make it all feel as if we are going backwards instead of progressing to an end. Instead of wasting time fiddling with unneeded fixes, I wish they would channel all that time into releasing an update that actually contributed more to the overall game, such as a campaign, more buildings, more resources, and even decorations to beautify your floating community. Flotsam is an enjoyable, relaxing game, to be sure, and I do recommend it, even if I am anymore just annoyed by its snail pace of update releases, but I would advise waiting for a sale.Show moreShow less
Update: 1/1/2020 The developers do have a roadmap which begins with QoL improvements followed by some additional game play enhancements. I would still recommend to wait and see, I plan to pick up this title again once they release the "Goals" update which I hope will greatly improve the game play loop. ( Thanks to @elStrages for commenting with the roadmap ) Rating: Keep it on your Wishlist The atmosphere is well executed, a pleasantly cheery and bright world yet still thoroughly apocalyptic. Almost makes climate change seem like an enjoyable, campy experience! But, this game isn't ready to be in EA, much less sold for $24.99. There is maybe 3 hours of content here, if you're a completionist. It took me an hour to research what I needed and reach the end of the map. Another 2 hours to visit every possible stop on the map which are actually quite repetitive, everything there is to see can be done in the first round. The tech-tree is extremely short with only around a dozen new buildings and no upgrades. It also isn’t much of a tree, you can unlock anything in any order but there are definitely some dependencies to watch out for. This is my biggest concern - the developers really should share their plans for the tech tree in a road map. Flotsam introduces an FTL style approach to moving your city around the map, which does in some ways make up for the shortcomings of the tech tree. But, there isn’t a lot of variety here yet and the game play still gets pretty stale once the tech tree is fully researched - not unlike most other city management games. I still consider this game play element to offer a ton of potential towards replayability. I look forward to seeing what the developers ultimately end up doing with it. Until the Developers announce a road map, or a big content update comes out, this is a title you should probably leave on your WishList for now.Show moreShow less
I came across Flotsam very early in its prolonged early access development. While it took a very long time for the game to come out, I did get to experience numerous gameplay iterations and generally found enjoyment in all of them. I was mainly attracted to the game based on its art and aesthetic style and cozy “waterworld survival” concept that made it feel like a casual version of Rimworld. I was glad to see the specialist quests and end-game content finally added but wish it had come sooner, but I understand that this was made by a small studio. Pros: Very colorful, cartoonish visual aesthetic never gets tiresome. Gameplay is very simple and easy to pick up and understand. Things I'd like to see improved: In all of the game's versions, there has been no ability to manually assign drifters to tasks. Instead you can set their task preferences but you're generally stuck waiting to see who will show up for a task once it's assigned. Resource management and crafting can get extremely burdensome as the game progresses, with the end-game loops feeling extremely repetitive and time-intensive. Audio is very limited. It would be nice to have some kind of soundtrack rather than just the occasional twangy banjo chords and strums.Show moreShow less
There is no settings for VSYNC or FPS Limit. The game just starts at 800 FPS in the main menu and cooks my GPU to 400W, to render absolutely nothing. --- EDIT: Developer just added vsync after 7 days of release (and 7 years of early access) I felt bad for writing the top negative review with 103 likes. This game got destroyed in early reviews for being a buggy mess. ON THE PLUS SIDE: * The devs have been rolling daily fixes. * They added vsync and fixed a few crashes (I had two crashes in 10 hours fixed now). * They fixed quests getting stuck (didn't affect me). ON THE MINUS SIDE: * random walkways were bugged and impossible to upgrade, a cosmetic bug since release (some say since 2019) * the last update removed walkway's menu, which prevents to move them at all, making the game unplayable * the game intentionally doesn't allow to move a building, you have to fully deconstruct and reconstruct, in a very slow and gruelling process * deconstruction is bugged since release, some steps don't trigger at all or might happen after an hour, making the game unplayable I tried to play this evening, reorganized 3 docks + 3 salvage boats, sadly they all got stuck in deconstruction. I am giving up now and going to bed (after updating this review!). I actually have to stop playing, crews will start dying if I have to play another hour like that, with limited ability to collect food/water/items. It pains me to write this because the game is actually quite nice and chill when it works. Maybe try again in 30 days.Show moreShow less
quite fun, but after 3 hours i finally managed to get myself into a stable situation and now i have nothing left to do. you're basically constantly fighting against the ressources by not having enough food and water, and the whole game is just tryign to fight against that. there is not much content to really justify 20 bucks, but the game is truly gorgeous and it is clear that a lot of work went into it. unless you got the 20 bucks to spare, i'd suggest waiting a year or so for updates.Show moreShow less
The game is in EA. That is all there needs to be said. As it stands I think there is probably 1-2 hrs of interesting content to be played, but as of June 28th, 2020. This game is not really worth a buy in my opinion. I think the game has a lot of potential and I hope the developers see it through to completion. Pros: -Brilliant idea for a base builder -Art style is very nice and pleasant -Decent chill music -Pretty decent resource management system Cons: -Very buggy (my drifters stopped working my seaweed grower and then also would not deconstruct it either) -Procedural Generation is finicky (at some point the procedural generation just stopped working and resources stopped spawning; also the map had a boundary) -AI movements are quite poor and inefficient -Not enough noob text (text which gives you numbers such as food/water consumed per day per drifter, movement speed, etc.) -Priority system does not appear to work well -Lack of variety of collectors and resources (probably will be expanded on later) Once again, this game shows some potential, but if you are looking for a more fleshed out base builder/colony manager I would buy Oxygen Not Included, which is a fantastic game. Right now Banished also has more content than this game although if you want to avoid disappointment I would not delve too deep into Banished either. I hope to revisit this game in the future once more content has been released and bugs have been fixed.Show moreShow less
As a player that absolutely eats up simulation games, this one stands out as pretty dang exceptional to me. The art is fabulous. The music is chill and relaxing. The polish and smoothness are way up there. The play loop is enthralling (but more automation is needed here and there). I racked up 36 hours in the last 2 weeks without even realizing it. Thoroughly jazzed to see all the updates in 1.0. Great work here, devs!Show moreShow less
Won't recommend with current price and content. Get it on sale only or wait until more stuff is added. After few h in the game it's just boringShow moreShow less
Great Fun Survival Builder Game ♥ I have been playing this game since it first release during early access back 2019. Couldn't be more happy to see it finally made it to 1.0 full releases. :D Flotsam is quite unique survival colony builder where you start with survivors after the great flood on a boat, sailing, collect resources and growing your colony with no combat, fill with a wonderful art style and a quirky cutie survivors (also you can be friend with seagull). Rather than feeling like everything is falling apart and that hope is lost (like most game that set after some catastrophe event), Flotsam however, make you feel hopeful as you growing your colony, which I find it a rather wonderful idea, and that, in my opinion, make Flotsam quite unique on it own. Recommend to anyone looking for a cute tiny colony/builder game, it is addictive, can be challenge if not careful, yet enjoyable. I love everything in this game, (especially those seagull). A Waterworld experience minus crazy stunts, or hostile world with expensive floating island and Kevin Costner :P, Flotsam is highly enjoyable. ♥Show moreShow less
There are reports going back to 2020 of people being unable to save their game. I just ran into this same issue. That's kind of a dealbreaker for me, so I don't recommend Flotsam in its current state.Show moreShow less
