AMAZING GAME, takes a few games to figure out what you're doing but after that this game is a blast to play with friends PROS: - graphics look amazing - at its core a very simple game - has huge potential CONS - early access means not many maps yet - Menu is a little bit wonkyShow moreShow less
★★★☆☆ I didn't really expect to write a negative review about this game, as I enjoyed watching this on Twitch. It also reminds us strongly of Worms and Worms will always be great. That's also a fun game to watch, especially since nobody is a total God at it; all players make hilarious mistakes. This is not the case with Forts, because that game is more about the race to the super guns, instead of postitioning, planning and destruction. Forts players are rewarded for building really fast. Once you get the hang of it, which means that you know what to build first and what NOT to build early in the game, you'll beat the enemy simply because they weren't fast enough to get the cannon or plasma laser. Granted, I'm no RTS veteran. I know that APM is a thing in that genre, and Forts inhabitats that thing too. I found myself more frustrated than enjoyed with this game. I felt like I lost many games because the building parts didn't want to connect, or that I simply lost resources restructering my own mistakes. Soon, I felt behind with the competition. Than a couple of minutes has started wherein I just spam repair on the building parts that are constantly under fire. Meanwhile, I'm trying to build my own weapons. It becomes stressful, tedious, and ultimately I wish there was an turn-based mode. The server browser currently also suffers from technical problems. You've to refresh the list constantly from the moment you open the window, or you won't connect to anyone else. If you do connect, you might have to wait a long while to see the lobby fill up. The game starts, and apparantly some players didn't survive the (sometimes looong) loading screen, resulting in unbalanced teams. I also had a constant error with the Commander you can use: everytime a game started, I was a Commander I didn't choose at all. Finding a lobby is also hard because the game has an extremely small playerbase, with peaking at 100 players a day. UPDATE: I've noticed that the playerbase grew! That is great! I'll write this game of as 'not-for-me', but if you are into racing for the oblitirators and into the constant managing, repairing, building and aiming, this might be for you. EDIT: I like to announce that the developer seems to be dedicated with this game, as they do roll out patches frequently!Show moreShow less

Somebody needs to explain to the devs that 'campaign' and 'challenge mode' are supposed to be two separate game elements. When I play a game's campaign mode, I expect story and a gradual ramping up of difficulty that lets me learn the game and develop my own approach to things. That is not what you get with the Forts campaign. Even on easy the campaign requires you to complete skill challenges in each map to earn enough points to progress. Not quick enough? Don't have perfect aim? Don't quite know a game mechanic fully yet? You'll be forced to replay the same campaign levels over and over again until you hit enough skill challenges to progress. Maybe that's fine for completionists or highly competitive gamers, but historically a game's campaign mode is supposed to be a mode that's geared more towards casual gamers and those who mostly just wanna go at their own pace. If your focus is multiplayer or unlocking achievements then Forts' campaign is probably right up your alley. If your focus is on an enjoyable single-player experience you will walk away frustrated and weary of this game.Show moreShow less
I'm a 40-year-old father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single dad to my son, who is now 10 years old. My son recently started playing Forts. In less than a week he has already played over 8 hours. It was awful for me because it was already hard enough for me to spend time with my son. Because he was always with his friends or watching YouTube videos. So I decided to create a Steam account to play with my son. I started playing, but it was my first time playing a video game since the 90s, so I was pretty lost. I asked my son for help and we spent a few hours playing the game together. I enjoyed it, as it was the best time I had with my son since my wife died. Playing video games reminded me that there is fun in everything, and it brought me and my son back together, and now we actually spend time together outside of the house.Show moreShow less
This game is functionally excellent but the time I could recommend it to be picked up is long past. While it does have an enjoyable campaign the main reason I, and probably most that buy this, bought the game to play mutiplayer. However the multiplayer experience in this game is incredibly disheartening for a new player. The number of people still playing is quite low and you have to wait for lobbies to play in. This has a flip side of meaning the usual people that still do play tend to be veterans that have played for a long time. This causes a new player to have to join games full of people that can just play loads better then them. That coupled with the very poor attitude of the people I have seen made every single game produce anxiety. For example; in my recent games once I was kicked mid game for what I can only assume was building too slowly, once I was insulted for asking for help on how to build something, and not once but four times I was kicked between games for not playing well enough. And the few times I was let to play again I feel I was then specifically targeted by the enemy team to die first because I was new. I love the premise of this game, I really do. The game itself is fantastic. But I missed when playing would have been incredible. Now it's a huge slog of wait 5-15 mins for a game where I know I'm going to have no chance and likely either get insulted by people that hate me for not being as good as them or just outright kicked with no word. I could get past loosing a bunch of matches no problem if there were more people playing, but I can't get past how anxious I feel in lobbies when I do finally get in one. If you're an rts vet that could learn quickly this might still actually still be worth a try but if you're a casual player that just stumbled across this or came here from watching Incursus play this isn't likely going to be a fun time.Show moreShow less
Great RTS, especially for those newer to the RTS genre. Simple, easy to understand, lots of deep mechanics to explore, and extremely satisfying explosions.Show moreShow less
EDIT 13 Jun While I applaud the fast response to the situation, my review will stay as negative for two reasons: It's not counted in the overall review score, as I received Forts for free many years ago This review was made to showcase the attitude of EarthWork to the broader audience of Steam's users, not to be petty. The game itself is great. Despite being over 9 years old at this point, the physics-based RTS gameplay still holds up today. The developers? Not so much. Major content creator Cloud was banned for 2 months, had their trusted host status and content creator badge revoked, and was removed from the Forts testing server. Why, you may ask? Because Cloud shared the dev build of Firebird with 2 friends in a way that: Would not let them play without Cloud hosting a game Would not let them further distribute the build I've never seen a developer crash out harder than EarthWork here. Cloud, as a content creator, was given a key to create content, and told to not "share it publicly". Privately sharing the dev build in a non-harmful way to create said content, which is what Cloud was given the key for in the first place, resulted in Cloud being unable to create Forts content for several months. But hey, at least you got your attention, right?Show moreShow less
I am a 76 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing. I am a single father to my Son, who is 28 now. My son found this game at my house, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 276 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his work buddies or just watching tutorial videos. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. Loaded into the game world and started playing but I was stuck on what you were supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he helped me. Loved it as it was the best time had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories. Thank you <3Show moreShow less
I used to have a positive opinion of the developers, but the situation surrounding Cloud_ completely changed my view. Giving a content creator access to a new DLC and then punishing them for making content about it is absurd. What makes it look even worse is that the decision was only reversed after a strong negative reaction from the community. For me, the issue is not whether Cloud_ was banned or unbanned. The real problem is that this situation creates an impression of inconsistency and poor treatment of the very people who help promote and support the game. When a decision is only changed because of public backlash, it's hard to have confidence in the developers' judgment. The game itself may be good, but the way the team handled this situation has seriously damaged my trust in them.Show moreShow less
