I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single farther to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2020 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, made my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.Show moreShow less

I love it. I don't care if it isn't perfect (and it's not, yet). It is not a shoot-em-up. Forget it, it isn't. It's an experience. I'm an ex-Royal Marine, and I can lose myself in it completely. The right rules generally apply, and strange things like a machine sticking its sword through the wall into me, I can forgive, while wryly thinking that given a wooden ship-lap house, a machine probably could. They'll fix that, and other stuff. It is slow and immersive (at least how I play it), you use the rain, you sometime wait for night, the rules of cover-from-view/cover-from-sight actually apply. I never use roads for instance, unless I am ambushing something, and I cross at a run into cover the other side. If you want action-action-action, buy Doom. This is brilliant. I've read some of the other reviews, and grinned. I understand that they want big rewards, but what rewards would there be? You are living in a deserted world, being hunted and trying to find out why. I turned the hints off - I didn't want to be told. I didn't use the hud, except as a compass - I looked, and found all the same things. Slower, but I found them. I found them because they were where they would be. As for me, I like space between excitements. I like creeping up on things and destroying them. Occasionally, I like to be besieged in a Church by ten Runners, four Hunters and two Tanks and walking away alive at the end. I just love it.Show moreShow less
Have you ever played a game that you thought was outstanding Told your friends about it Played it every day Paid full price just to support the devs ..... and then they do an update that ruins the game and you're like WTF!!! That's Generation Zero Was one of my favorite games until the last update, where they changed the inventory system to one that isn't conducive to quick battle scenarios. (Look at the discussion board and you'll see that most people are of the same opinion) Imagine being in a fight with 10 or so enemies surrounding you, then you have to fidget through your inventory to switch weapons or items necessary to win the battle, but it takes you too long and you die. That's essentially what it boils down to. The previous system allowed you to see everything you had, then quick drop items into your slots so you could keep fighting. The game concept, music, enemy design, weapons, etc... where all done very well. I found it to be very addictive (pre-update) and enjoyable. I put in alot of hours, and had just bought the Alpine Unrest DLC. Not many games can make me jump or get my adrenaline pumping like Gen Zero would. (those tanks scared the $h1T outta me) It certainly needed some work to fix some bugs and keep the game interesting, but all in all it's a fun game. I want to give props to the devs for such a great and fun idea. But for me, I cant get back into it with the current inventory system. Its a complete cluster%@*# If its fixed, I'll change it to thumbs up Update: I uninstalled the game. The devs response to this completely lacks any resolution or constructive self reflection. Their first response was to say that "most of you liked the inventory change", when the comments in the hub clearly show the contrary. Their second response is to say they're simply going to clarify the current system. Seriously? As far as I'm concerned, they deserve all the negative feedback that they earned for themselves. The game had a great idea and beginning, but its a dead issue now. IF they ever get along to doing something to remedy the issue, it will be too little too late. Let this be a lesson how NOT to handle player feedback.Show moreShow less
Okay, don't get me wrong...this game DOES have issues... Terrain has actual cracks in it, scenery floating above the ground in many places, you can't quite walk up steps right, the inventory is wonky and items don't stack like they should, and this list could go on for a while. But despite all the negatives, I still enjoy the game. Many people are saying the same things, "it's boring", "it's too easy", "there aren't enough robots", "there's no point in looting because it's all just the same stuff" I can agree that there are parts where there isn't any action...so I could see where it could be boring for someone who is used to Call of Duty or something, where you are constantly running and gunning, but this game isn't like that. You wouldn't buy Life and then b*tch because it isn't more like Monopoly, would you? Same idea...it's an FPS...but it's also a sandbox-exploration RPG... As for being too easy, yeah...at first it is. You come across 1-2 Runners at a time, sometimes there may be 3-4...and they are armed with .32 caliber weapons and have to stand still to shoot you...with their giant "weak point" conveniently sitting, unarmored, on their back for you to easily shoot. Later in the game, those very same Runners are armed with 12 gauge shotguns and full auto 7.62mm machine guns, with turrets that can rotate a full 360 degrees and fire while they are sprinting around...combine that with the fact that you are fighting 15-20 of them at the same time AND there are Seekers, who send out a sonar pulse to pinpoint your location and relay it to all of the surrounding machines, there's a swarm of Ticks that are jumping around attacking you like a f*cking facehugger from the Alien franchise, and then you hear a loud screaming sound behind you...and turn around just in time to be melee attacked with a giant bladed arm of a Hunter... You stand up, dealing with the ridiculously long recovery cutscene, and try to run and apply some first aid...but oh no, there are now 4 more Hunters closing in on you and they are sending a barrage of bullets at you with their .50cal machine guns and one of them is lobbing gas grenades in your direction... I say, if you think this game is "easy" or there aren't enough robots to fight...you simply didn't play it long enough... I've literally played it for 17 hours and the amount of machines that we encounter has dramatically increased, they are armored, the AI seems more intelligent, and their weapons and sensor systems are becoming more advanced...and we aren't even through the "intro missions" or even stepped foot off of the island that you spawn on... As far as the looting, yeah, I agree it can be monotonous searching every single house and vehicle, the countless backpacks just mindlessly strewn about, only to find 4 stacks of flares and ammo that you can't even use because you don't have a gun that shoots it... You want to hold on to EVERY piece of loot because other games have conditioned you to "loot all" and keep every scrap because you can vendor it, dismantle it, or use it in a pinch for a big save...but this game isn't like that. You don't need to keep any items that you don't plan on using in the short term...your 2 main weapons, a side arm, first aid kits, the little adrenaline shots, and a stack of ammo that you can load ON your weapon so it doesn't take up space in the inventory...maybe some flares and a gas canister...but almost everything else, either don't loot it, replace existing items, or drop the extras...because nothing is worse than getting to the bottom of a bunker and hearing your buddy find a bazooka and shells, and you have to sit there and manage your inventory because you are carrying around 17 boomboxes and a thousand rounds of ammo for weapons you don't have... Anyway, I'm very much in love with the game. For every negative against it, there is some positive that balances it, and most of the negatives become trivial because you are too busy saving Sweden from an army of killer robots who are blowing up the entire area with napalm missiles. Avalanche is pretty good about listening to the community, and this game literally just came out...give them some time to correct some of the big issues (like item stacking, and some of the UI problems)...and this game could be amazing. At worst case, pick it up on sale, because it's not worth skipping just because the Fortnite generation says that it's too boring...Show moreShow less
First I'd like to say that I own this on Playstation and have probably spent hundreds of hours in this game, 99,9% solo. Might be fun with a friend, but not randoms. Don't own any DLC besides the soviet weapons pack (which I enjoyed). After giving the recent free update a chance I'm sorry to say that I've lost all hope in this game. I'm done. The developers try, they really do. They just fail at every attempt to improve a very broken game that still feels like it's in alpha after two years. So why do I have hundreds of hours in a game this bad? I really, really, reeeally want to like it more than I do! I kept hoping they'd fix all bugs and lackluster content but they never did, they made it worse. It's a shame 'cause it has so much potential. The good: 1: Beautiful large open world. I'm Swedish and I think they did a decent job making it feel like Sweden. The nature is fantastic. I'd recommend it just for this aspect, if everything else didn't weight it down. 2: Core gunplay and the feeling of combat is great. Most guns feel and sound very satisfying. Destroying machines too. 3: Army bunks and lockers look exactly like they do IRL, right down to the bed sheets (which looks exactly the same in present day). Reminds me of conscription a few years back, heh. That's it. The first two are so damn good that it kept me coming back for over a year, again and again, to enjoy sun- and moonlit walks through the woods and fields, blowing up machines left and right. The bad: 1: Copy/paste! Explore the first 5 houses you come across and you've pretty much seen them all. 99,9% of buildings are copy/pasted with some slightly randomized interiors. A few different bland wallpapers, the same 4-5 80's band posters (why all the posters?!) and a couple of generic paintings (you can literally find several exact copies hanging next to each other). Same furniture etc etc. Nothing unique at all. Often you find 3 identical shops on the same street. The few buildings that ARE unique you can't enter. Oh, a shop/store/cafeteria/postal office/whatever, I'd like to check that out. Can't enter. Cool, there are apartments in the larger towns! Can't enter. Large R&D HQ that is part of the main quest? Nope, you just get sent to a generic bunker nearby (those are the worst of all! I hate bunkers, so will you) To be fair they actually are reworking areas every few updates and opening up a few closed buildings. Most are still bland and boring though. 2: Clutter! In said reworks they are adding way to much clutter to the game. The farmlands region for example is just filled with nonsense military camps/fortifications, that hold no strategic value whatsoever, sitting in the middle of fields surrounded by waaay to many corpses and bots to loot. Makes looting even more of a chore + ammo and items become too plentiful. This is the case in each area they rework. A perfect example of trying to fix something and breaking it even more. 3: Poor design. In most large open world game you tend to find floating items, but this is just ridiculous. Fences, boxes, houses, all kinds of items float and clip into each other. Some are overlooked errors and some are by design. Open a door in a house and don't be surprised if it goes through a nearby bookshelf, making objects fly all over the room. In trying to make "unique" houses/environments they just stuck House A to the end of House B and so forth. Tacky. The more they rework, the more stuff I find floating in midair. It's really easy to spot which makes me think they don't even care. 4: Enemy variety. Six types of Robots with the same four subtypes. Not much differs from subtype to subtype ... 5: AI. ... and they're dumb as hell. Mostly by design but the seem to bug out often too. They just charge at you, stop to shoot, charge a little more until they are close enough. Then they repeat a predictable cycle of 2 seconds of fire, 3 seconds of just standing there and taking your fire. Repeat. Just hide behind a rock/in a house and wait them out, fire, wait, fire, wait, fire. Larger enemies often bug out and just look at you while you slooooowly chip away at their large health pool. That or they can't find a clear path to you and get stuck somewhere so you can cheese them. Cheesing is the meta if you can't kill them superfast with the best weapons in the game. 6: Inventory. It's crap even though it's actually been worse (still really, really awful). It's unorganized, unoptimized, poorly done and makes it a real chore to switch items, especially in combat (game doesn't pause btw). You only have 4 slots for items and you VERY often NEED to switch items in and out of combat. Medkit A, B and C, 'nades, different flares, spawn beacons, lures, traps, binoculars etc. Why? Why did you do this? Oh, and if you run out of Medkit A, and find more, you need to manually open your crap-ventory and re-add it to your items. This game desperatly needs an item wheel and it's truly beyond me that two years have passed and there's still no item wheel. 7: Looting. You'll spend more time looting random containers than shooting robots. Never anything special. Just the usual items and ammo, the odd gun but rarely anything useful. Which brings me to ... 8: Keybindings. ... lack of options for custom keybindings. You can only close loot window by hitting ESC or looting everything. Since you spend almost all your time looting, hitting ESC whenever you don't want something is a pain. Like a literal physical pain for me after a while. Not ergonomic at all. Can't bind it to mouse key or anything else. So you'll probably end up hitting R for "loot all" and just sort out the trash later (which will be often since carry weight is very limited). Might be a minor issue for others but a huge problem for me. 9: Skills. Many are plain useless, some are deceptively bad. Look at "Hacking". Says you can hack enenies with your binoculars, confusing them. Next tier has a skill that makes them your ally for the duration. Looks good! Does not mention you can fail a hack (which you do the absolute majority of the time) or the 60 second cooldown between hacks, failed or otherwise. Can't reset skillpoints. Takes a long time to hit lvl cap and just one point off and your entire build is ruined. Just start a new char and do it all over again. 10: Crafting It's a joke. Blueprints are hard to find and offer little as ammo and items are plenty. Crafting clothes with stats like 1% less bullet dmg is utterly useless even with full "gear". Materials found can only be deposited in a special workshop not available at every safehouse, meaning you have to drag around dead weight until you find one. 11: Base building/wave defense. This is so bad in both thought and execution. UI for base buildning and HP for parts/marker for enemies is really immersion breaking. It's awfull and doesn't fit in at all in any way. Stealth-action, survival/crafting or arcade defense? Make up your minds and go with it. 12: Story. "Where did the robots come from? What do they want? ... ... and mysteries to uncover." It's super obvious. They have military designations in Swedish and are obviously made by the Swedish Army. You figure this out right off the bat. Also, the FNIX Rising DLC dots the map with camps tagged with FNIX Supercomputer or something obvious AI related. There, all of above questions are answered within an hour or two of game time. Swedish voice acting is crap. Story is bad and bland. You know exactly where it is going from the start. 13: Missions. Missions are boring and are mostly a chore without any real reward (Like i said, you're gonna hate bunkers). I could go on, but I'm running out of chars in this review. @devs, just give us modding tools so we can do what you won't. That said, I think you should only buy it if it's super cheap. It's the best bad game I've ever played! ^^Show moreShow less
OK first off let me say I completely understand how this little game is getting slated so much, however, I personally loved it. Sure its hard to start off with, but avoiding combat ( to start with), stock piling ammo, exploring what (lets be fair here) a visually decent and ever changing environment, the game becomes less and less challenging to the point of being able to obliterate all but the largest of enemies. I'm going to get the bad stuff out of the way first. There's been lots said about the cars, bunkers, houses etc all being the same. TRUE, it's been said that once the tutorial island has been completed it becomes feckin hard. TRUE. The crafting system is utterly pointless TRUE. The fact that most of the skill tree skills should be included as part of your charachter right at the start TRUE. Most of the other negative points mentioned in reviews are true, but you must try and get past these (to me) fairly un-important things. We all buy our games based on reviews and for me, also price, screenshots and whether I think it will be like any other games that I have played previously. I'm a more ahem, vintage player. My days of COD, DOOM and other frenetically fast paced games are behind me. As my reactions slow, my eyesight diminishes any my tolerance for verbally abusive kids deteriorates I find myself looking for games in which I can escape to, explore at my own pace and savour without having to run round like a blue arsed fly. This little game allowed me to do that. And best of all I was ALL BY MYSELF! This for me is the biggest plus for any game of this genre. Multiplayer can kiss my arse. I'm a selfish, grumpy, middle aged married man and any solitude you get is to be cherished, the bonus being that you can vent your spleen by destroying bloody great robots. So if your reading this and think I like games like Farcry, Assassins Creed, Stalker and especially Fallout or any other games that you can take at your own pace, in whatever order you like, I would like to recommend this game. Before anybody jumps on their high horse to say that its not got half the content of the previously mentioned games or is half as polished, save your breath, your correct but at the time of writing this review it's £5.49 on CD Keys and I got 45 hrs of pleasure (and initial frustration) and peace. To me that's a fantastic result. My advice to anybody that is wobbling about whether or not to buy Generation Zero is to go ahead and pay your five and a half quid and form your own opinion, it's really not a massive loss. If anybody's still reading, my advice is to take your time, avoid all un-necessary combat early on, explore everywhere, open all the boxes, stockpile your resources and then go for it but most of all, as Depeche Mode once said, enjoy the silence. If you've taken the time to read my review, thanks. If you thought it was any good, please give me a thumbs up and thanks again. If you thought it was rubbish. Whatever. Also if anybody can recommend any good, lengthy, graphically lovely single player games please feel free to recommend them to me as for me it's about the single player experience for me. ThanksShow moreShow less

I was pretty hyped up for this game upon hearing about it being a sandbox FPS based in my own country. Purchased and pre-loaded the game the day before release with a friend of mine, and now we finally got around to playing it. Sadly, it has not met my expectations and I will be refunding it. The environment is beautiful and the visuals are very stunning - this is the only positive of this game that I have found. Rain and storm weather effects help build up a pretty intense and chilling atmosphere. However, the enemies do not blend in with this environment very well at all. I get the vibes that the developers wanted to bring out an eerie feeling out of this, but the enemies are not capable of scaring you - the game does not keep you on your toes because nothing in the game is intimidating. Speaking of intimidating, my friend and I stumbled upon a big robot guarding a bridge. We looked at it from afar using our binoculars, and decided to start shooting at it using our scoped hunting rifles. Upon firing at it, it turned to us, but then froze on place, letting us shoot it freely. To test if it was because of our rifles' silencer, we switched to our handguns and tried shooting it from the same distance - no response from the robot - or any robots for that matter. Cheesing enemies was quite frankly way too easy this way. As far as we could see, the missions were all "go into this area, kill these enemies and loot these items." We had so much loot in the end that it was near impossible to run out of ammo, our backpack was constantly full and it did not feel rewarding at all to keep going. The survival aspect of the game gets kind of thrown out the window because of how much equipment we were given. There was no strategy involved either as each player had his own loot. We all picked up the same weapons alongside the same ammo. This is fine as other games have proven but with the amount of loot given to us, it is overwhelming to a point where the game feels like a shooter with infinite ammo. The UI in the game is very clunky and I feel that the way this game handles it is very, very outdated. Scrolling wheel does not work to scroll between your currently equipped guns, and sometimes you cannot change weapons on the move (this worked sometimes however, which leads me to believe it was a bug?) Hovering your mouse over items in the inventory does not tell you what they are, instead you have to click on them to view it. It is also not clear whether or not you can attach items such as scopes or silencers to your weapons, or if they are already equipped based on the inventory. There are lots of animation related bugs present in the game's multiplayer. When getting hit by a robot's melee attack, the other players models would start spinning around violently and occasionally get stuck inside objects because of it. We found containers keeping enemies alongside the beach that we wanted to explore, but as my friend opened a door and entered the container, he got stuck for a while. Lastly, this may be on us not understanding a mechanic very well, but after running for about an hour exploring, my friend's game crashed. Upon rejoining, he spawned back at the very start of the game, approximately 6 ingame kilometers away from me, with no ability to fast travel. This was the final straw that made us shut down the game. Overall, in the game's current state, it does not feel like a survival game. It feels like a shoot em up in a beautifully crafted world with infinite loot, stormtrooper enemies and little goal to achieve anything. The skill trees are interesting but it feels like they are there without much use. You are rewarded for doing essentially nothing with potentially cool abilities that won't impact the game. It's gonna be a no from me.Show moreShow less
