I am 42. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and adopted our son together. They are now both 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I found myself lost and miserable. I was self destructive. I got so mad one day from everything spiraling out of my control that I punched some concrete in a moment of overwhelming emotion. That caused me to break my 5th metacarpal in my right hand... my working hand... my games hand.. the hand that I held and carried my children to bed with.. The hand I desperately needed to make sure I could continue to provide. After learning of the severity of my self-inflicted damage, I was borderline suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man with no history of depression or anxiety. I have never had fits of rage, or been one to break down and cry, but I was in a low spot that just really buried me from being able to see the light on the other side. Having nothing better to do, I searched for a game I could play, ONE HANDED while I recovered. I somehow stumbled upon this game and read some of the reviews. I decided that it had to be worth a shot... I must admit, I didn't beat the game, or play nearly as long as some of you. In fact, I may have only played this game a day or two.. With that being said, after doing so, I had a new found joy and hope for life. I was able to put behind me the pain and suffering that had been cast over me. I was able to experience other peoples joy and happiness. I was able to see the fruits of my "labor". I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ing minutes to this music long enough to realize that I was going to be okay. After coming to that realization, I turned the game off, and I went back to work. It hurt my hand like hell but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so damn sorry for myself, and I became the father I needed to be in that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving as. Today, I am close friend with my kids mother. We don't fight, or argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents, and friends. I now have 3 kids. My third child is, wait for it, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my own separation, and we just stumbled in to each others life unexpectedly. We have been in a relationship for a year now, and are very happy together. Moral of the story, you never know what life holds in store for you, and if I would have given up when all the odds were stacked against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. That's all, thank you.Show moreShow less
The only thing I felt was that I should feel something. It seems like I am in the minority here, but its a review nonetheless. This fails as a game. There is no loss state, even when I was being chased by the big boss of the game I couldn't die. I let go of my controls and let it all play out without any agency and still I couldn't lose. GRIS is STUNNING aesthetically. It has a flow to the entire thing that I just didn't want to look away from. But I was so bored that I was finding anything in it to do. Other reviews talk about a lack of challenge and how that is a point of the title, but my argument is that if there is no challenge why make it a playable experience? Lets talk about this. I worry that once people have more time to play this title the review score might go down a bit. It has a great front end with the intro animation, beautiful singing, and feeling of loss. As it went on, however, I could only feel a sense of "when will this get good?" When I saw the title card I thought for SURE I will be enjoying myself now! But it hit its peak at about halfway through and that wasn't even that high of one. I tried to die on multiple occasions and only was met with frustration. Never did I feel like I could lose, so I just kept walking forwards hoping I will stumble across a challenge to give meaning to the my adventure. They talk about this game having a story of sorrow, struggle, and attempting to resolve them. This is a game. A unique media where you can interact with it all. You can FEEL the impact of the struggles your character is going through. FEEL the loss, the sorrow. PLAY the rise from nothing to accomplish everything against all odds. This has none of that. You don't develop emotionally as I don't know what the emotions were that my character had. I never got to interact with any meaningful scene in the game since it instantly became a cutscene the moment I got there. Even the boss was nothing more than a cutscene when I got to the end. As a player, me being there didn't matter. If this was an animated movie it would have so much IMPACT because of how its all done. But all I was doing as a player was going to the next cutscene to try and figure out what I was doing. I had no agency in it. I was streaming this game and discussing with the chat what was going on, and it was fun when we were onto something. The fun was outside of the game, where I didn't have to be playing anything to do it. As a game it can and should have me interact with the emotions of the character. Its about struggle and loss! Let me lose! Let me struggle! This shouldn't have been a game. Reading articles online state that the development team was more artists than developers. Playing it I can only agree. I don't want to spoil anything as I would spoil what little I feel the game has to offer. But the story we as a group could find was good reguardless of what I, the player, had done to make it happen. I argue that all my slow walking to the right segments actually hindered my ability to enjoy any emotions I may have had. If this had been an animated short it would be so, so much better. They can tell a story with their animations you can tell that much. They have subtlety in it that I couldn't be bothered to care about as I had lost interest in the gameplay. I would love to hear what stage in development they decided to make it a playable experience. I keep saying this but please can the art team make an animated short in this world? About how the character lost what she lost? I would pay to see that. Hands down I would pay to see that. The lack of challenge is the final kick in this game that killed it for me. I think there were only 5 times that I felt "oh this is a good section!" and they were only one-room puzzles. They had mechanics for only about 10 minutes most of the time then abandoned it. The ones that lasted longer were actually not mechanics just enviromental flavor that was made to look like a mechanic you interact with. I spent most of my time simply walking. Slowly at that. It wanted me to explore to find all the wells or whatever they were to collect. But I refused to get through another moment of that walk speed. Underwater sections were awesome because I could MOVE and it flowed so beautifully. I don't need a game to be challenging. I don't need a game to hurt me for looking at it in the wrong way. But I need a game to have something I can interact with. To have pits to jump over, spikes to dodge, and goombas to stomp. This has nothing. Even the little creatures that walk around inside of rocks are immune to my smash attack. It was a walking art exhibit. I could talk about this game's emotional impact, but it only resonated with one person in my chat. I could only think of how sad it was that this game didn't live up to its potential. An artful impactful story of loss, struggle, and perseverance? That is such a great idea! But it didn't have any gameplay that supported that idea. It was a dull slog through a pretty world with nothing rewarding you for it. Watch a lets play of the game, go catch a stream and talk to the chat about it, but don't pick it up for yourself. Only if you feel like you can resonate personally with the story (sparsely) told would I feel its something worth playing. Even then try for when its $5-7. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe I am a heartless individual and I didn't see the struggle the main character was experiencing. But I've cried to games before, and I've felt nothing here. I would love to see other people's comments on what I've said here. Did it fail as a game as I said? Was it deep and meaningful for you? Was it better to watch or play?Show moreShow less

Wow. This is my first game to complete in 2020 and all I can say is hopefully things will get better from here on out. GRIS was an absolute drag to play. I can understand why the game won awards for being visually stunning but that's pretty much all the game has going for it. Gameplay is tedious, save for a couple of cool moments. This is not an edgy review. I am the kind of person that had GRIS stamped on my forehead. I am a shoe-in for this kind of game. Sadly it just wasn't any good. PROS ____________________ + music and sound. GRIS has some great music and in-game sounds are fantastic. They all lend themselves well to this surreal world. + artwork. Up close cutscenes are wonderfully animated and could be their own animated movie. Some of the levels are really well crafted too and have lots of things going on. There are other parts of the map which are quite dead though. ____________________ CONS - gameplay. Platforming can be to-the-pixel-tight and repeating the same jump over and over again can get frustrating, especially when you have to loop around the long way to get back to the place you botched the jump in the first place. - tedium. GRIS gets pretty boring in the midgame when it has played most of its hand. Slowly tracking left and right over the map to find the next ball of light or floor to smash through gets old, FAST. - stale. GRIS doesn't bring anything fresh to the genre really. At times it feels like you are playing a very pretty mobile port. - oh wait! is something cool happening? let me drive! GRIS does this at several points where finally the action cuts through the grind but rather than let you play it, it removes the control from you. It is either this or it allows you to control but you are at a point in the game where you can have no effect on the outcome anyway. - price. I think GRIS is overpriced but maybe 17 bucks for 4 hours of gameplay is worth it to you. Bear in mind I am a gawker so you could probably cut that down to about 3 hours. _____________________ They say GRIS is a game about depression and loss. I am also depressed at my loss of 17 bucks to this game. It lured me in with its exceptional style and graphics but left me just hoping for the end once I realised that under all that visual charm lay a pretty hollow game that has been done many times before and has been done far better.Show moreShow less

GRIS is probably the most overrated game I've ever played. Why? Because there's virtually no "gameplay" to speak of. Yes, I get that it's supposed to be artistic, but that's just it - the game appears to have been made by an artist, not a game developer. Even the art style just isn't for me either; it looks far too artsy-fartsy and esoteric. I get that this game is supposed to evoke emotions, something I have no problem with. Rather, all I really got was the sense that I should be feeling something; which I did not. It feels instead like this game was made for emo teenagers. So what do you actually do in GRIS? You run; over long distances in a virtually linear fashion, to turn the backdrop into various colours. There're some elements of puzzle solving, but it's just so unengaging and boring. It feels like forever before you finally get your first "power". And what does that power involve? You turn into a block. Yup, that's what you accomplished; you can now turn into a cinder block that stops you from getting blown away by wind. Maybe that's intended to be a metaphor for the first stage of grief or something; I don't know. I mean, even the achievements sound boring. The first two I've gotten are creatively named "red" and "green", and both are described as "a color has been brought back". Wow. Deep! I got this game because I enjoy platformers, and because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews. But upon closer inspection of said reviews, you realise there's virtually no depth to many of them. It's a good platformer? it's done well? How so? You can't even down+jump to drop off platforms as shortcuts, which should be a basic feature of any half decent platformer. Even the positive reviews acknowledge that there's not much gameplay to write home about. Stay away from GRIS if you're looking for some genuine gameplay, for you will get none. Only get this if you're really into pseudo-expressionist art and don't get bored easily. This will be my first ever request for a game refund. What a shame; I tried to like this - I really did. But if you thought the first 20 mins was boring, the next 40 won't get any better.Show moreShow less

You know, sometimes you just don't like a person everyone around considers nice and helpful. They're so righteous, so well-rounded... so infuriatingly wholesome. Something about them makes you imagine squeezing their f*cking head until their teeth start pouring through the ears. And they're good to you, too. But you just can't like them, there's something shady about them. The way they look at you when no one watches. You see a spark of malice in the corner of their eye. The way they oblige everyone to owe them a favour, the way they dress, their impeccable rubber face and a wide smile. You have no proof, but you know that this person is a bloody psychopath. I believe that Gris is a cynical, calculated award bait. I don't think that I can prove it, so this is just my opinion, not a lawsuit. What exactly does this art project gain by trying to be a game? It would be better off as a piece of non-interactive media, like a pretty cartoon or something. I guess the competition is more severe in that field. Playing it felt like a chore. There are no new or particularly interesting mechanics, no challenge and the only (but constant) fail state is the excruciating slowness of it all. If tedium was an art form, this would be it. - But muh art! The music is so sad... look, she can't sing, the poor thing... - Well, I can't sing for ♥♥♥♥, no one pities me! - It's all about the experience, man, the game is definitely a masterpiece since it made me feel sad, it touched my soul! I once saw a dog's head on a pike while casually strolling through an abandoned construction site, now that was an impactful installation! And yes, the game does make you feel, but forcibly, by using every trick in the book - from sad music and cute creatures (you don't want them to get hurt, do you!?) to even more platitudes. Of course, the game is also 'a metaphor for mental shenanigans', which happens to be a sturdy shield against criticism. Prudent! Her world is literally 'showing cracks', ain't it subtle? Many good games use some of these cliches, but Gris abuses them all at once and in the most manipulative, formulaic manner. Oh, look, 'the monster is her pain and fears'! She's 'bringing back colors to the grey world'... and then the rain starts falling down... By. The. Num. Bers! My curatorShow moreShow less

Now listen up If you're into atmospheric games, this game is definitely for you. Ignore my review and buy the game ASAP If not then buy it on sale. I'll start off with saying everything I really like about the game: The Music is phenomenal; every area of the game has different soundtracks that matches with the dominant color on-screen. Red is somber and ominous, Green is playful, Blue is serene and calm and Yellow feels kind of like a mix of them all. The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ art, yiiiikes it's good. GRIS is, honest to god, the prettiest game I've played/seen for a loooong time. It's absolutely bonkers. I'd nearly say that you should buy this game just because of the art. Now, here comes what I find so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unfortunate, since everything else about the game is amazing. The gameplay is insanely slow. There were only about 3 times where I felt just the tiniest bit of excitement, and that was it. Yes, I know that atmospheric games are usually like this... but you can't use that as an excuse when the game gets boring af. It's a problem that I get annoyed after about 20 minutes of the game, muttering to myself that the game can't go any slower than this EVEN if it tried.. I wanted to collect every collectible and get all the achievements, but when I was at the end of the game I just wished for the end credits to roll, even though the endgame was enjoyable. I wanted to bactrack a bit, and go collect some things that I probably had missed. But the game straight up denied me to go back (several times), just adding to the annoyance I am torn; I want to reccomend it, since the game was enjoyable. But GRIS had so many issues that I just didn't find the overall experience enjoyable. And that's what GRIS is: An experience. So it's different for everyone. You might like it, you might not. Who knows. /rantoverShow moreShow less
