“A Chinese-made FPS roguelite that multiplies random guns, occult scrolls and a talent tree into runaway builds — best with friends, luck-bound solo”
Our Verdict
Stack every column together and Gunfire Reborn is a game of fierce, legible contrasts. It is not a well-rounded all-rounder; it is a knife honed to one edge — perfected where it cares, cheerfully indifferent where it does not. Grasp that trade and you already know whether it belongs in your library.
Its place on the map

Looked at from 2026, its coordinates are clear: this is a landmark in the fusion of the Chinese-made FPS and the roguelite. It proved a point — that a Chinese indie with no triple-A budget could, by nailing the two core things of gunplay and build depth, sell past two and a half million copies worldwide and bank a lasting reputation that outlived the skepticism it launched under. The 18-outlet Strong rating on OpenCritic, the roughly-77 average and near-78-percent recommendation, alongside the long-running 93 percent positive on Steam, are the objective footnotes to that claim. Its value is not that any single axis is the best in the world; it is that the combination punch of solid shooting, deep building, and long-haul updates lands clean and hard. Before it arrived, "Chinese indie" and "high-completion shooter roguelite" rarely sat on the same box, and plenty of studios that followed read a possibility in it: you do not need big and broad, you need one core loop sharpened to a point and the patience to keep grinding that edge for years.
Who should buy, who should walk — and whether it lasts

The buyer's portrait is sharp. You want solid gunplay, you will accept the randomness that comes with a roguelite, and ideally you have a couple of friends to run with. Nod at all three and Gunfire Reborn is a near-blind pick — it pays back your hours in shooting feel and build combinations, run after run. The walk-away portrait is just as sharp. Came for the narrative and the world-building? There is none. Cannot stomach the late-game luck swings of solo, where the missing piece stalls you cold? You will sour on it. Hold the visuals to a top-shelf standard? The cel-shading and the modest ceiling will not satisfy you. None of this is a flaw hidden in the fine print; it is simply the trade the game made, and it never once pretends to be a different kind of game. That clear boundary is, in its own way, a kindness to the player — it does not bait you in with a glossy trailer and leave you disappointed.
Then the last question: will something newer bury it? Set against a same-era roguelite-shooter benchmark like Risk of Rain 2, and against a more modern junior like Roboquest, Gunfire Reborn does not lead on every front — Risk of Rain 2's snowball is purer, Roboquest's tempo and visuals are slicker. But it holds two cards that are hard to copy: a first-person gunfeel welded to a breadth of scroll archetypes that runs unusually thick, making the per-run hit more immediate; and close to five years of polish across every platform, a depth of accumulated content and community goodwill that no newcomer closes overnight. From an underrated trifle to a serialized evergreen hit, that road is itself the moat. So the answer is yes, brighter rivals will come — and Gunfire Reborn, on the strength of its feel, its breadth, and its long accrual, will keep sitting comfortably in the library of anyone who loves a Chinese-made roguelite shooter for a long while yet.

Risk of Rain, Dead Cells & Borderlands all had a baby. And it's glorious. Pros: Super addictive gameplay. Lots of replayability with upgrades and unlockables. Challenging enemies. Gunplay is great, weapons look and feel awesome. Appealing visuals and art style. Play as a gun wielding doggo or cat. This review makes Damocles mad. Cons: Really unbalanced right now. Enemies will SHRED you some times. Can come across as very grindy. Only 2 characters and not many levels. Full video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hM8CZdftTLcShow moreShow less
The game is OKAY... It has a lot of potential but at the moment it seems to get stale pretty fast. The levels aren't exactly the same every time but they're so similar they may as well be. There is a large variety of weapons and "power ups" you get get during a single run, however, most weapons feel insanely bad, and a large majority of the power ups feel identical, aside from some very rare ones that are actually very fun and probably the best part of the game. Besides those points, my biggest complaint about the game is the loot system. All of the weapons that drop have random effects on them such as "Increased damage when enemy has this debuff" or "increase fire rate" however, instead of adding excitement to a already good weapon, it seems to make you look for very specific effects otherwise the weapon is bad. This more often then not, leads to runs where you are slowly slogging through the levels because you're weapons are so extremely weak. Overall, I think the game needs some major tuning of the weapons system and replay ability but since it is still in early access there is a good chance the game will improve dramatically during the progression of the game.Show moreShow less

okay so, I'm too lazy to learn video editing to link it in a steam review so I'll just describe it it's that clip from family guy where quagmire comes out of his house after being inside for a week after discovering porn and his one arm is super buff, except instead of quagmire its me and instead of porn its gunfire reborn and instead of a week its over 2 yearsShow moreShow less
Developers of this game are still adding features while completely overlooking fundamental flaws in the game. I have been playing since beta, and I don't think any of the numerous feedback I've written have even been read. Probably the three biggest problems with this game: 1. Ammo available doesn't scale with reincarnation levels. After you beat the game and unlock everything the only thing left to do is play against enemies with higher health and damage (Reincarnation levels). This lazy approach to an endgame is better then nothing, but the developers completely overlooked that if enemies have more health, you need more ammo! Isn't it fun "losing" on reincarnation level 5 for no other reason then you ran out of ammo to shoot enemies with? Oh well! 2. Low replay-ability for a rogue-like. The game starts to get really fun right around the time its ending (the end of your play-through). This is when your character is at their most powerful. In my opinion, reincarnation levels should have been added as a continuation of an existing play-through. Rather then starting each reincarnation level fresh, it should be something you are offered to do after you complete a run, all the way up to the highest reincarnation level, keeping your scrolls, guns, ascensions ect. 3. Sometimes the game just gives you trash weapons. There is nothing you can do when this happens except prep for a bad run/waste of your time. Many of the guns in the game are complete garbage and aren't even worth considering for use. If you don't have a good weapon after beating the first boss its a good idea to just quit/remake game. Beyond those three.. some additional things that are poorly designed and need rethinking/reworking: The portal room where you defend a cube from waves of enemies is poorly designed. Enemies run right past the player's character directly to the cube and attack it. This doesn't make much sense with reincarnation levels because...wait for it...increased life of enemies once again! Since the higher "Difficulty" mode basically just gives enemies a ton of life, this room is often times a total crap shoot for the player since you more often then not wont have the damage to kill them. And since they don't even engage with the player and just run straight for the cube, you really don't have much of a chance on this one. Ground based elemental effects from grenadiers and similar: These effects appears a a big flat area on the ground. Visually, it appears they should be something you can jump over, or jump dash over. However, in practice this is pointless. Adjust the graphic to match the height of the effected zone or adjust the functionality to match the current graphic.Show moreShow less

This game is a blast to play and is amazing. I'm giving it a 1/10 simply because the customer support is bad. My access to the Visitors of Spirit Realm has been revoked for no reason whatsoever. I have both of those characters fully leveled up and now all levels wiped from them. Steam verifies that I do in fact own the DLC, but the customer support does not. They won't even check the logs of updates they did to my account. When provided with evidence to my owning, use, and achievements of the DLC, customer support hit me with a 'Hello, we have followed up and provided feedback on this situation for you. Thank you!' with no follow-up on the evidence. I can't even get a refund from Steam since Steam Support needs the Customer Support to deal with it and they refuse to give me my access back. 4/19/2025 EDIT: proof i played these characters and had the DLC: https://imgur.com/a/Q26XBGeShow moreShow less

More neutral than negative but the overwhelmingly positive review average is very misleading. This game is just ok. 6 out of 10 IMO. Enemies become bullet sponges (even worse in multiplayer) and many weapons and scrolls are useless. Movement speed is too slow, especially when holding heavy weapons. Runs quickly become repetitive, yet you're expected to grind runs ad nauseam to level up your skill tree and make runs less tedious. I gave the devs feedback but there's a language barrier that resulted in them thinking I meant the game lags when I really meant the overall pace of the game is too slow. The update today was a tiny step in the right direction, but generally speaking the game still feels just as tedious as before.Show moreShow less
