I can only reccomend this game to two kinds of people. If you're a fan of the original .hack series (Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine), you'll be able to enjoy this game as a continuation of the story, and for familiar gameplay with a few new twists. The only other group I can recommend Last Recode to is people who played the console release of the G.U. trilogy, and are looking to play the new fourth chapter. For anyone else, my criticisms follow. First and foremost, I found this game to be buggy in a way not related to the story of rogue A.I. causing glitches in an online game. The game has, in my experience, a tendency to freeze. A lot. The game freezing has been such a constant problem across all volumes that I got in the habit of maintaining two save files just in case it decided to crash while saving and corrupt one of the files (though this has not occured at time of writing). Secondly, the game is a bit easy. You might struggle a bit early on in Vol. 1, but it doesn't take long to get to the point where in any story areas, you're just cruising through without ever feeling threatened or challenged. It actually takes more effort to keep from getting to a point where you're high level and decked out in the best gear than it does to get there. Especially if you're carrying over data from one volume to the next - which you should be, it's the intended way to play and you miss out on some content by not doing so - you'll get to a point where with very minimal play outside of required sections, you'll never really need to worry about the story getting too tough to progress. Money ceases to be an issue vey quickly as well, as you can easily earn tons of it, and most of the time, using items isn't needed. Third, there's some especially notable problems with Vol. 1 in particular, just in terms of story and pacing. After a short tutorial sequence, the game finishes off a brief period of story before you can get back to the action, ending in you getting sent on ANOTHER tutorial. One which largely covers the same things you just got done being taught. Further, there's an extended sequence in the story that involves entering a tournament. This is perhaps the most aggrivating element of the entire trillogy. Every single round of the tournament ends in getting kicked to a cutscene right before you could have finished the opponent off. This is not an exaggeration. It's literally every round. You NEVER get to actually win a round of the tournament. This is made worse since pretty much all of the scenes focus on your character being "outmatched" or "not ready" and getting pushed to his limits/forced to rely on his special "protagonist powers" to win in some way, shape, or form - made even worse by the fact that, as I noted earlier with the difficulty, it's not at all unreasonable that you'll have 10+ levels and better gear over your opponent and be able to end them in a single attack...if the game didn't force them to survive at 1 HP, that is. Fortunately, the games get better as they go on, but these early moments can make it hard to push through to the more engaging parts. All the issues can be overlooked, but overall I just can't reccomend Last Recode to anyone who isn't already a fan, because without that level of investment, it's just not going to feel worth it.Show moreShow less
Congratz Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2. You made it. Now can you do all of us a favor? Port the Rest of the Franchise to Steam. Oh by the way we also need more Tales of Games. Gameplay is 10/10. If you've played the Game on PS2 you can't go wrong. Oh and the Price is also a huge pro argument. For 50€ you'll get 4 Volumes and each of those are 20-30 Hours long. So feel free to put in atleast 100 Hours of Playtime to complete all 4 Volumes. Soundtrack wise this Game is pure... heaven... Like... Sometimes I just stand still and listen to the music. You can't go wrong with .hack//G.U. Last Recode. Period.Show moreShow less
UPDATE: There's a DLL file replacement fix you can find in the user discussions that fixes the audio. Not changing this review since Bamco has yet to fix it themselves. ---------------------------------------------------- BAMCO, PLEASE FIX THE LANGUAGE OPTIONS! Reinstalled recently so I could get back to this, but the developers pushed an update in March 2022 that adds Chinese support... but breaks the language settings, locking the game into using Japanese audio regardless of your settings. There's technically a "fix," but it's a half-measure at best. You can swap the JP and US audio folders and folders for SOME FMVs, but for most of the main, story-important FMVs, they're encoded into multiple audio tracks, so you need to do a lot of obscure file format editing, demuxing, and all that I don't have the time or expertise for to "fix" those FMVs, too. This is something a hotfix should have handled shortly after the patch was released, and frankly it's unacceptable that it's been nearly a year and this problem still persists, with no complete solution from the community to mend things, either, and Steam doesn't let you download depots for this game, so downpatching's out of the question, too. I can't currently recommend buying this game on this platform unless you were only planning on playing this with the Japanese audio. Go get one of the console versions instead if you want the English dub experience.Show moreShow less
Project G.U. is a sequel to the original dot hack series. But the story of our protagonist started as early as .hack//sign (the anime) so there's quite a lot of homework to do about lore and background story before we can actually dive in and fully enjoy this game. Below is a small summarize for those who wished to know what happened but don't want the homework: ".hack//sign" (anime) A 10 years old boy have been enjoying the online game "The World" as a PK player under the name "Sora", he met the protagonist of "sign" and got involved in the birth of Aura the Ultimate AI but instead of being on the side of the protagonist, he joined Morgana, the AI that's supposed to give birth to Aura, but went berserk due to self-awareness has awoken and realize that if it gives birth to Aura it will lose its purpose and disappear. In order to survive, Morgana tried to hinder the birth of Aura. At the end of the anime, Sora betrayed Morgana and helped the protagonist Tsukasa and his(her) gang to escape from Morgana's wraith but he himself got caught by Morgana and his consciousness is trapped in the Staff weapon of Skeith, the program Morgana made to eliminate Aura. .hack Original Games (".hack//Infection", ".hack//Mutation", ".hack//Outbreak", and ".hack//Quarantine") The story continues from the Anime into the 4 games where "Kite" (Kaito) is the protagonist this time and the story goes on about how he met Aura, how Aura is deleted by Skeith and how he revive her and rebirth Aura into her final Ultimate AI form. During the process, Kite defeated Skeith and Sora is freed from its staff, and awoken in the real life but lost memory about everything regarding the game "The World". Alternative Ending: ".hack//gift" (OVA) "gift" told a story of a reunion with Sora in it, but that part of the story is more like an alternative story line since Sora lost his memory and never play the world after that. ".hack//Legend of Twilight" (anime) This series tell the story of the golden age of "The World" where Aura is incharge of running the game and even the whole network in the world. In the story, Aura cloned the PC body of Kite and Blackrose and selected 2 siblings in the real world to become their owner, and the story started from there. Unlike the other anime that's depressive, this one here is in light mood and focus more on the comedy part. The lore is connected to the later games but our protagonist of G.U. has nothing to do with this series. Bansyoya Jun's Journal Reports (Short Documentation) Bansyoya is the elder brother of what we will later know as "Pai" in the G.U. series. He's among those who created the G.U. project. And it's a report summary of what happened in the 1st .hack original games and how they come to develop the PC bodies using the left over of the destroyed data of Morgana's 8 genes. This is included in Last Recode, so those who didn't play the .hack orginal 4 games can have some insight into what happened in the past. ".hack//roots" (anime) After years of hiatus, the boy who once known as Sora has grown, over hearing his friends in school talk about how great the new released MMO "The World : Revision 2" is, he decided to play it himself. This time, using a character named "Haseo". He ran into a group of PK the very 1st day he tried the game, and was saved by Ovan which he's invited to join his guild in search of the "Key of Twilight". The anime talks about how Ovan disappeared and Haseo went back being a PK player but instead of normal PK he's doing PKK (Player killer's killer). The anime ended with his defeat from the fight of Tri-Edge and get reformatted back to level 1. And that directly connects to the G.U. Trilogy. ".hack//G.U." Trilogy (".hack//Rebirth", ".hack//Reminisce", and ".hack//Redemption") G.U. told of the story of how Haseo turned over to a new leaf and become a better person in the process of getting to know more people and care for them. Each characters have an ending of their own in the final game "Redemption". And there's 2 hidden characters that we get to unlock in post game. "Online Jack" (Short Anime) Online Jack is a short anime series that we can watch directly from within the game, it tells of what happen in the real world and how a reporter and school teacher tried to find out what happened to the missing children. ".hack//G.U. Returners" (OVA) This OVA tells a story of how Ovan is awaken and invited the gang to a special event in the game "The World R2" and how they find out AIDA is being birthed into a chim chim AI... but again, like OVA "gift", this ended up to be an alternative ending because the later released game told of a different ending. ".hack//Reconnection" This is the main sell point of Last Recode here where it tells a different ending from the OVA. AIDA evolved into a human form and not Chim Chim here, and it's a very short game which tells a story of how Haseo save Ovan and finally gets the Ovan ending. So that's about summarized what to expect in the story flow. For a lot of .hack fans who only watched the Anime, they have this impression that .hack has a pretty depressive and serious story. But for those who actually tried the games will know that there's quite a lot of lol moments in the games. In fact, the games are more on comedy side than depressive. Game Play The game looks pretty outdated even the remastered version. The texture can be clear and great looking but the 3D models are still using those sharp pointy polygonal ones that look like some very very old game. But they've put up a claim at the beginning of the game saying that this is "intended", to recreated the feel of the old game, and those "glitch" in the game is story intended as well. The background is as seen in the anime, with a hint of the online game "Master of Epic" (used to be the top 3 online games in Japan for years) on trading and crafting side. But heavily resemble "Phantasy Star Online 1" on the game play and dungeon run side. In short, this is closer to a 3rd person view DRPG, but instead of doing a full fun action rpg style battle like PSO1, they have to made it into "unnecessary" encounter style. So be warned that it's going to be tiresome of loading in and out of encounters and you will wish to get hold of that "no encounter" item that's only available in late game to avoid further frustration. But in overall, putting the tiresome encounter aside, this game is pretty worth the price tag in contents. And the story telling is AAA rank. Recommended if you plan to dig into a game with deep lore and large contents.Show moreShow less
If you're not here for nostalgia, look elsewhere. There are much better games to be had these days. If you are here for nostalgia... well, the first three volumes are a decent example of what the PS2 was able to do back in the day. Of course, that means you get the full course... button-mash combat and quick-time events galore. That's somewhat offset by the cutscenes (and thank whichever you can skip the more repetitive ones)... although, if you haven't played the first .hack series of games, you'll have no reference point for a couple of things that come up. Still, it's quite playable now, if you want to revisit old times. Then there's volume 4. It's a shame, since this was likely somebody's passion project, but the only words that come to mind here are "cut corners". When it comes to gameplay, that might be a good thing, depending on your point of view, since playing to "complete" status took me less than 7 hours playtime (as compared to over 20 hours for the prior volumes), but that was accomplished by locking down practically every non-essential item both inside the game and on the "desktop" you launch the game from, all justified story-wise by The World preparing to shut down. On top of that, the animation quality in cutscenes changed significantly... oh, the images being animated are arguably better, but the animation itself isn't as smooth as it was in prior volumes. Worst of all, in my opinion, the new story doesn't really hold up, compared to prior volumes. Long story short, if you're eager to play/revisit the original volumes for a little nostalgia, by all means go ahead. But, if you're looking for a new RPG to play, or you're looking to continue a story you liked from decades ago, just let it go.Show moreShow less
I played the GU series back when in the PS2 version, and I am primarily getting this for the nostalgia. So far, I do not regret getting it. Two things I want to point out: 1) I find the price pretty fair as it is 3 (or 4 if you count the newest one, not sure how long vol 4 is) games into one. 2) People in the forum are saying this is a copy of SAO, I just want to refer those people to re-watch the intro. This game is being released as the 15th anniversary of .hack, which means the original .hack series goes all the way back 15 years ago. On the otherhand, SAO is from 2009 (light novel)...so yea...Show moreShow less
I'm a fan of the dot hack series (be it games, animes or light novels) and I still have the PS2 version of those games but let's be honest, this remaster is a joke ... potentially a scam. Let's skip the fact that a playstation controller isn't supported despite the game being originally from PS2 and now only on playstation 4, and that the game hasn't an option for playstation overlay buttons. It's a inconvenience (most of all for the tightly timed QTE when disarming traps) but can be worked around with mods. No the real problem is the lack of work this port ... or should I say ... this emulation has receive. - saves that disappear magically after some random period of time (edit : they are actually still there but you need to restart Steam -not just the game- to see them again) (edit2 : launching the game with administrator's rights seem to prevent that to happen ... seriously bad port). - Many visual glitches (edit: most -but not all- can be worked around by setting the shadows to low). - Lack of proper PC options, and some of them aren't properly implemented, like for vsync where enabling it locks the game at 30 fps ... but with the game being slow down since the speed is tied to the framerate, or disabling vsync which locks at 60 fps but with a tearing fest like you probably never seen. (edit: the vsync 30fps lock only seems to apply when using full screen mode. You can use borderless windows to work around that but have to use the same resolution as your desktop). - PC options not even accessible in-game. You have to return to the title screen (the one where you can select which game to load) but you can't even quit the game unless you spend 30 minutes in the 1st part of the tutorial (but you usually want to test the settings right of the bat). - Same (very short) draw distance as on PS2. - Textures barely upgraded on the background (it's ok on the characters) which is very (very) blurry. (edit: texture filtering is indeed doing more harm than anything, disabling it got you less blurry textures). - And so on. Add to that, that the game isn't an especially good Action RPG if you're not into dot hack storyline. The gameplay is quite limited, the game ask the player to "return IRL" quite frequently ("guess I will log out and check my emails" will be the sentence you will hear the most), the ctuscene using the game engine are strange since there is a delay before each character started talking which results in something quite funny when the conversation heating up but is plagued with silence between each sentence), which would be unthinkable nowadays, but since they didn't even port the game correctly, it's no use to expect they would refine the game itself. Frankly I really hesitated to ask for a refund right away. The only reason I didn't was because, as I said, I'm a fan and having already finished that game on PS2, I want to know what is the 4th story/game they added. For those that are still interested in the game, I would strongly recommend to get it on console.Show moreShow less

Bamco removed cloud saves. Do not buy this version. This hurts to leave a negative, it is my favorite franchise of all time. These games are great, and they are wonderful ports of the PS2 games with many QOL changes and just overall a great experience. That being said: BAMCO REMOVED CLOUD SAVES FROM THIS GAME. Again, Bamco removed cloud saves. If you get a new PC, if you acciedently delete a save, if a save gets corrupted, etc., your progress across four 40-60+ hour games can be wiped out. Over 150-200+ hours of progress can be lost because you upgrade your PC.Show moreShow less
