better than $70 I spent on Diablo IVShow moreShow less
The game is your average bullet hell survival game, so if you're a veteran of this genre and really into it, buy this game; you won't regret it. However, if you're not, or maybe this would be your first experience, there are other games that offer a more 'pleasant' approach to the genre. I wouldn't recommend Halls of Torment to anyone who hasn't played games like 20 Minutes Till Dawn, Soulstone Survivors, etc... first. In those games, you gain new abilities/synergies almost every time you level up during a run. Here, you only receive minor stat increases. This leads to a very, very, VERY repetitive, boring, and stagnant early game. Most of the abilities, items, game mechanics, characters, and upgrades are locked behind quests that require a significant amount of time invested in your runs. What does that mean? It means that in the first few runs, you WILL die due to hordes of enemies that act as a stat check, forcing you to return to your camp if you haven't acquired enough meta progression upgrades. And don't get me wrong, I can understand that. But in my opinion, Halls of Torment went too far with it: -The first 2 hours of the game will have you crawling through hordes of enemies that are just too tough for you, only because you need to grind more. -You unlock a powerful item seller once you explore the second zone (which is much harder), in order to get upgrades that will allow you to survive in the FIRST zone. I feel sorry for those who have never dared to play in the second level and are still struggling in the first, maybe even thinking they are doing something wrong. -Progression is forcefully capped to a set amount per run; you really can't complete more than X quests at once because they require you to use a certain character, to do the opposite that another quest asks for, or simply require many runs to complete. Additionally, you can only recover one item per run using the well that the seller uses to bring your items to the surface... Oh, I didn't mention this earlier, did I? Yeah, the seller sells the items that YOU find and YOU recover, asking for thousands of gold coins to unlock an item that you already found first, further slowing down the progression. Having a slow progression is NOT necessarily a flaw, but since the runs have the SAME. EXACT. PATTERN. every time, with the same enemies spawning at the same minute in the same formation, it might quickly kill the interest of players who expected a game with fewer meta-upgrades.Show moreShow less

Prior to the update on 8/31/23, the game had a real feeling of accomplishment to it. When starting from scratch, the game is very challenging with a very smooth progression. The rate at which you unlock characters, achievements, and equipment is very well paced, and matched with the speed with which you better understand the game. After a reasonable bit of playing/grinding, you will be able to clear all content in the game with some effort, and as you near full completion of the game it becomes much easier, but no less enjoyable due to it feeling like a well deserved payoff. Simply put, the game was fair. This new update has broken all that made the game enjoyable. Even past 90% completion with nearly all achievements, equipment, and blessings, it is now a struggle to survive, but still possible. But what I can only imagine is how terrible the new player experience must be now. If you are someone who is currently still eyeing the game, continue to do so until further updates + reviews show promise.Show moreShow less
This is a remarkable step up from Vampire Survivors, it's like going from NES to SNES, now you're playing with power! I'm 55 hours in?!?!? Felt like 5 hours. Update - I'm 110 hours in, the new updates have breathed new life into this game. The devs are almost reading my mind when it comes to balancing challenge and fun.Show moreShow less
The game is kind of fun, that is until you get to the final boss in each area. The developers made the bosses sponges with like 100 million hp. So the "very fun end engaging bossfight" is just you running around dodging everything while hitting for nothing (even with a full dmg build)! Spending 10-20 minutes on a boss simply because it has too much hp is not fun gameplay, at least not for me.Show moreShow less

Latest patch really put a downer on this game. They nerfed a lot (abilities, gear, exp gain,..) while making enemies more damage spongy thus making your hero feel really underwhelming. There are a lot of bugs in this game since the new patch. The AI of bosses sometimes just bug out as they stand still or stop attacking. The new end boss from the frost area feels really unfair too. Hitting you with abilities that have already faded out. The game before this patch was pretty good but as of now I can't recommend it and I fear of what it will turn out if this the direction that they are going. Sacrificing fun for artificial difficulty and dragging the longevity of the game out.Show moreShow less
