EDIT: This has been an evolving review based on new info and improved context. There are many things about the game that are great, the gameplay is incredibly solid and the foundation is there for a long-lasting multiplayer experience. As of right now, however, this is not a positive experience. Some users have chosen to ignore the rampant penny-pinching by 343 and accept the game in the state that it's currently in, but this is not a good idea, it only tells 343 or Microsoft that you're willing to accept a subpar Halo game from the get-go, despite this being the prime opportunity to tell them what's wrong with the game in the current state. One of the many qualities that ruin this experience is the armor-coating system. In prior Halo titles, armor-color could be chosen freely, it was up to the individual player to choose what best expressed their character. In Infinite, you must pick from a small and obnoxious selection of pre-chosen colors, the only reason why this system is in the game instead of the old system is so they can monetize the armor colors and add it as rewards for battle passes. I wish this was the worst of it but there are many examples of 343 selling the same colors and simply renaming it something else. For example, the color grey is unlocked at the start of the game, but the SAME color grey is unlocked at level 99 in the battlepass, the only discernible difference being a small red light on the armor that changes to blue. There is a base-blue color and a near-identical blue unlocked at level 14, there are tiny uninteresting variants being sold on the marketplace for upwards of 10 or even 20 real-world dollars. Ultimately, even if the quality of unlockables were consistent, they're still a pain in the ass to unlock. Challenges are the only way to earn XP, you do not earn any XP from kills, assists, trophies won in game or killing sprees, you could play terribly and lose the match and still earn as much as the person who played incredibly and won, You do not actually earn XP from playing the game. Despite the disconnect between earning gear and unlocking it, they still constantly shove these features in your face and expect you to care about vapid rewards like XP boosts and challenge swaps. These are an artificial lengthening of progression. They 'reworked' the xp system and it somehow manages to earn you about the same XP as you used to, it's all so very predatory and non genuine, I hope 343 and Microsoft recognize early on that Halo isn't a game that should be so frugal with their content, considering this is Microsoft's most beloved and well-respected franchises. It's not some B-tier battle royale you can throw to the wayside and print cash, it requires finesse and a general understanding of your dedicated and passionate player-base. Old review below: This is good but with a few fixes it could be great. I only downvote because there are aspects about the XP earning system that are extremely greedy and far above the likes of Halo, 343 and Microsoft to pull. WE NEED XP EARNED PER-MATCH, Not just via completing weird challenges. This is the biggest problem with the game, that they expect you to pay for a battlepass ($10) and then the XP you earn is so sparse and insignificant that you barely earn a darn thing. you don't earn XP by completing a match, you only gain XP by completing randomized challenges with varying difficulty and randomness, some challenges being not very good. 5 hours in and I've only earned 2 levels on the 100 level battlepass, this is far too slow and very unsatisfying for such a large-scale game. The actual game is fun but the act of earning anything at all is predatory and slow.Show moreShow less
The fact that the battlepass is the biggest complaint right now honestly shows how good the actual gameplay of the game is.Show moreShow less
Pros: + The gameplay is fun now that 343 is finally striking a balance between what came before and incorporating what they had learned from Halo 5 to create a more tactical take on the old arena style of game we're all used to. + The utilitarian art style is back, no more skin tight suits with armor bits stuck onto it. + Sound design is crisp and gives a fairly decent impression of impact. + Music, for what little exists in the multiplayer portion, is really good and I'm happy to see electric guitars return to Halo in some capacity. This beats the droning noises and ambient sounds Halo 4 called "music" whenever it was featured. Cons: - The new weapon additions to the sandbox have disrupted already existing weapon's roles or have outright rendered them obsolete in many ways. My key complaint is the redundancy of the plasma pistol now that there is an EMP weapon that can perform what the plasma weapon could just even better. Meanwhile the plasma pistol's EMP mechanic is entirely removed to focus more on Spartan v Spartan combat all to fit in a gimmicky new gun. - Vehicles are back to being weak and largely useless in the sandbox so staying on foot is the preferred method of success in a majority of cases. - While a nitpick, the differences between a female Spartan and a male on the slider is the stomach, which has so little difference you might as well not have the option. - Despite how much I have enjoyed the gameplay, and despite the fact that 343 has finally listened to what people really wanted out of them, the business model for this game is what really holds it all down. It wasn't enough they added new things to throw a price tag on, they have taken simple things like color schemes, something that has been with us since Marathon in 1994 and turned that into another source of revenue. Sure you have access to six or so basic colors, but that's it. No more custom color channels, no more choice, no more freedom. Colors, armor, armor attachments, visors, insignia, insignia colors, weapon skins, vehicle skins, victory screen stances, name plates, name plate backgrounds, A.I, and I'm sure only more is to come. This game is designed from the ground up to be a money generating machine for Microsoft and it can't come as a surprise as all of the business models Microsoft and 343 have been playing around with since Halo 5 has lead up to this point. Halo Online, the loot boxes, the battle passes, the skins, the seasonal battle passes for MCC, all of this was designed to test the water for this moment and it is simply disgraceful that they have gone out of their way to remove so much that was originally free to players day one. There are no credits, no ranks, no XP, for those who play free. You HAVE to buy a battle pass to progress towards any cosmetic change or buy cosmetics directly from the store, so either way you pay or GTFO. The prices for which are quite extreme for what you are ultimately getting in return. The smallest 'Halo Bucks' bundle is $4.99 which will provide you 500 and that can only pay for booster items to increase XP gain. The $9.99 for 1,000 which can nail you one cosmetic item in the store so far. $19.99 for only a thousand more (2,000) the heftier $49.99 for 5,000, and lastly the boldly priced $99.99 for 10,000 Halo Bucks. Considering the store will no doubt be swamped in hundreds of items that will also probably end up on rotations, this is insane. I could purchase a full priced game or two with that money, and instead I would be spending it on Halo Bucks. And, because I know there are plenty of morons who would defend this practice to the death, no customization is not important to gameplay, but it's been a part of Halo's character and one of the many things people look forward to in every release. They have taken that freedom out of every individual person's hands and attached a price tag to it. If you genuinely believe this is where the franchise should go, you are either lost or you know nothing of this franchise to even begin with. I will give 343 kudos for making a fun multiplayer experience, but Microsoft's greedy involvement in this business model is abhorrent and I will never change my mind on this. Overall, game is a 4/5 just the business model is disgusting and I personally will never willingly support it.Show moreShow less

Halo Infinite is The Girl that Ghosted You: You hit it off great at first, almost perfect. She promises you a great time and a major commitment. Immediately, you notice some red flags. But she promises to work on them. Issues continue to mount fast, and you're wondering if this is really worth your time. She reassures you she is working on it and promises to be better. After months of waiting, you hardly see each other anymore. Things are stale and all those promises become a shell of what they were. She comes up with an idea to take you out to eat at a fancy restaurant. But she ends up taking you to Mickey Moaburgers instead........and makes you pay. You keep telling yourself things will get better, but you know they wont. She wont keep up on her end of the bargain. It's time to let her go Chief.Show moreShow less
