Anyone who says presentation is 100% unimportant in a videogame should play Hell Pie. OR A monkey’s paw wish for complaining modern platformers are too milquetoast. Hell Pie’s a competent collectathon at its core, really. Basic movement is silky smooth. The main gimmick of swinging around with your cherub is unique and a bit overpowered, but who doesn’t like flying over things when applying a bit of physics knowledge? Level design isn’t remarkable, but it does it’s job. There’s a good mix of open-ended explorable hubs and linear obstacle course style levels, the game also introduces new elements and stage gimmicks regularly enough to keep things from getting stale. Collectibles are all around, there’s a decent variety and they all have specific uses like buying new costumes (always a plus). The game’s a bit simple overall, but usually all this would be enough to give me a decent time. Too bad the game’s constantly farting in its hand and forcing me to smell it. It’s not that the game has edgy humor, or has immature humor, it’s that the game barely has humor to begin with. The dialogue’s generally witless and full of typos. I go into a sewer full of ♥♥♥♥, and there’s turds in S.S. uniforms executing ugly big nippled blob monsters who clearly eat ♥♥♥♥ by the brown stains on their hands and mouths. Definitely crass, but what’s the joke? It’s funny because it’s disgusting? Everything in the game is disgusting, that’s not novel or a joke that can last for a few minutes, let alone an entire game. I’m not laughing or even offended, I just go “Ew.” and then I have to spend the next 10 minutes looking at ♥♥♥♥ and blob monster gore before going to the next batch of pointlessly ugly things. It may give you some nostalgia for early internet shock humor at first, but that wanes quickly and the game never really gets more clever than “that enemy has a vagina for a mouth”. Don’t think you can just skip all the dialogue and focus on the gameplay alone because so much of the humor is visual, good luck ignoring that the power star you picked up is some jizz! Hahahaha! That’s all it comes down to. It’s a decent platformer but the gameplay’s not good enough to be worth putting up with the rest of the game. Any fun I got from swinging around was usually canceled out soon after by some obnoxious dialogue or picking up a half-digested human as a collectible. This game is usually compared to Conker’s Bad Fur Day, but Conker is much more clever (it has some actual jokes), and that’s saying a lot.Show moreShow less
100% Worth the buy. This is what a video game should be. FUN. It isn't as polished as a triple A title but the soul and character that make a game great is there. It's a fantastic game to just blow off steam and have a cheap laugh here and there. It's a solid mix of Mario Odyssey and platformers of the N64 and PS2 Era. Think Spyro, Jak & Daxter, Conker, and Banjo. I would love to see bigger and better from this developer as well as an industry wide recognition that modern gaming has strayed too far from what makes an experience exceptional like this one. I hope I can encourage a purchase or two to support this studio.Show moreShow less
Beating the game and getting 90% of everything, I have to say it's a hit and miss experience. People who are already fans of platformers will probably enjoy Hell Pie quite a lot. It's unique setting, great/crude sense of humor, and an absolutely adorable protagonist have a lot of charm and will most likely be the reasons why you stick with it like me. Moreover the movement mechanics in the game are spot on and polished to a mirror's edge, the game absolutely nails the platforming of well... platforming. It's an absolute blast to be swinging around through the levels, collecting new outfits and seeing what new things come when you gather enough collectibles. Having said that, the game feels unfinished. There are many aspects of the game that feel rushed or like they have not been playtested, resulting in greatly lacking polish. I am mainly referring to: -lack of consistency (objects may appear in cutscenes, then disappear once the game shifts back to gameplay) -stuttering animations (there's seemingly little in between animations, the characters snap from one state to another) -carryable objects can easily become stuck in walls and become irretrievable, making you backtrack to start their carrying process over from the beginning -overall low quality of world 3 -npc dialogue being incredibly easy to miss (the range in which you can listen to npcs talk is very small, combined with the high speed you're usually moving at you will constantly skip dialogue boxes) -the abrupt ending, I won't spoil it, I'll just say it's incredibly short and disappointing In addition the game has two other major things that hold it back outside of lack of polish, that being repetitiveness and lack of challenge. Around world 3 the game becomes less and less fun the more you play it, as the way you deal with all your problems never changes apart from when the games gives you a gun, or when you unlock the final set of horns, both of which had great gameplay segments. As for the difficulty, it's a cakewalk (HA!), the game never poses any challenge making you at most repeat a segment once or twice. It is a real shame. All in all Hell Pie is a decent game, Nate being adorable, the movement mechanics being incredible and the humor making you smile all contribute to making it a good game. However all the shortcomings heavily detract from the experience and often made me groan with disappointment, lamenting that this beautiful little gem has an awful amount of blemishes. I really hope the devs will update the game and work out the kinks.Show moreShow less
Ah yes, Creampie! It was really nice to play a game starring a demon where the demon actually looks like a demon and not a human with wings and horns. A wholesome Christian Game. It honestly makes hell look more fun to go to. This is Banjo Kazooie for big kids. Instead of a bird, you’ve got a pudgy, joyful cherub on a chain. My wife says it’s like A Hat in Time mixed with Conker and Doom. My wife’s boyfriend says it’s like if GOAT Simulator and DOOM had a baby and that baby smoked drugs with Conker. Hell Pie isn't a game, it's a litmus test for early identification of children who will grow up to be on law enforcement watchlists. Hell Pie is a 3D platformer with gameplay reminiscent of A Hat in Time. Unlike A Hat in Time, Hell Pie contains a large dose of not-safe-for-work humor, which usually hits the mark. Humor is obviously juvenile, but I loved it. The level designs are interesting and the controls intuitive, though maybe a bit less polished-feeling than some others in the genre. The areas themselves are fun to navigate with a lot of knooks to find collectables tucked away in. Some of the areas are very intriguing and unpredictable and considering how the entire premise and tone is unusual you never know what's gonna happen next... it kept me glued to the screen til the end. It really does feel like playing those old classics like Psychonauts, Ratchet, etc, but with some perfect modern mechanics. I really quite liked it. One thing it nails is the movement. It gives you an incredible amount of options from getting from point to point. Much of the movement involves swinging through the air from a chain, which you can anchor in space through the use of your flying cherub, Nugget. The thing that most impressed though was that all platforming challenges seem designed for the standard default moveset, but through upgrades you can vastly increase your movement options such that you can pretty much ignore platforms and reach far away ledges just by yourself. Once fully upgraded, this allows for an absolutely absurd air distance traversal. A double jump, a dash, 5 spiderman swings and a really long glide. But it doesn't make the game too easy because there is a certain level of mastery required with the game's swinging mechanic and chaining together movement actions to reach far off ledges that would otherwise take longer to get to. It rewards player creativity, it rewards mastery of the game's systems and rewards collection if you found enough upgrade items to unlock those moves. And I think that shows a lot of confidence in the game's own systems and in players choosing how to use them. I feel like you don't see that too often in platformers, other games will design a jumping challenge to require you to use certain moves or have certain upgrades so the whole game feels more linear and you're just jumping through hoops the dev pre-made for you. It is a joy for any old school platforming enthusiast. Combats an afterthought but traversal is as good as any in the genre. I expected to enjoy it, as I do pretty much every 3D Platformer (I’m easily pleased), but godd**n this was much better than expected. I fu**king loved it. The mechanics, environments, characters, art style, & humor. All top notch! I'd say it's well priced for what it is; a well made 3D platformer with a smattering of toilet humour. Fairly short overall, Hell Pie just gets on with what it wants to show you and then leaves before it outstays it's welcome. I seriously hope it blows up or achieves a solid cult following, because it's the best 3D platformer I've played in ages. Humor is wonderfully juvenile, it's challenging, movement is fun, unique, and is pretty indepth. After just a couple nights with it, this quickly became one of my favorite games of the year, and possibly in my top 10 for the genre. Overall, I had a lot of fun, and would recommend the game to anyone who enjoys 3D platformers. 9/10Show moreShow less
All in all, the game was fun, the story is quite simple, but the gameplay / movement is in the foreground anyway and that's quite successful, otherwise a few crashes here and there that weren't very dramatic, at least up to the last one. My Game crashed and when I tried to restart and continue my game my entire save and progress for the last 20+ hours was gone (all stats were set to zero & after loading only a blackscreen appears), needless to say how frustrating this is especially when you want to reach 100% and only need 2 collectibles to do it. In view of the fact that you have to be in constant fear of such a crash that wipes out all progress, I can´t and do not want to recommend this game.!Show moreShow less
Oh wow- I almost forgot what it felt like to play something crafted with love and different with no compromises on the original vision. I love the setting of the game, it being in hell is perfect and the characters that you meet along the way are ridiculous and entertaining. I love the adult themed entertainment that I haven't seen a platformer since Conker's Bad Furr Day. I don't throw that comparison around willy nilly by the way. It's as refreshing as it is disgusting. The most important thing, platforming, is rock SOLID. Like, it's good, really, really good. It makes exploring the hub worlds and getting around extremely fun and easy to do once you quickly get the hang of it. There's also a lot to collect and unlock along the way in terms of abilities and outfits so while being fun to play it gives you a reason to explore. I applaud the developers for being fearless and making a game that feels like a game they always wanted to play as well as make. TDLR; If you like platforming collectathons and adult humor akin to Conker's Bad Fur Day, for $25 dollars, this is more than worth it's weight in gold.Show moreShow less
I bought it and due to the slow start and actual pleasant world 1 I had missed the refund time frame. I played it to the end with every ingredient gathered, spent the entire time hoping it would get better and it didn't. +The mechanics themselves are really cool, they flow well and allow so much movement. The overall premise and unlikely pairing is fun, but I cant really praise much else. - Whats the point in unlocking all of these abilities if they're never really needed. The only use for the extra jumps and swings etc is literally just to skip over most of the parkour. - I get it, its Hell, its gonna be gross and evil and whatever but the sheer amount of 11 year old '♥♥♥♥ and vomit' humour got so old so fast and is a super low approach to the visuals. On top of this is the amount of actual ♥♥♥♥♥ in the game and needlessly naked characters. - sometimes the game is an fps? no actual issue with the mechanics it just felt so out of place - from the 4th world to the end of the game the story just shuddered to a halt and after all the grandeur it's like they had no idea how to finish the game. abrubt and unsatisfying - finally, whilst the music and sounds were well chosen, please hire a new sound mixer. some sounds were WAY louder than others, including the music for the parkour realms. Meaning picking up some items like the baby uni-lambs and doing the parkour realms ended up near painful in the volume difference TLDR: buy it on sale, and even then don't invest yourself too heavilyShow moreShow less

if this game focused as much on platforming as it did trying to find more spots for gross out humor I probably would have given it a positive review, most of the game is designed with only your basic kit in mind, like it doesn't even consider the sprint upgrade you get within the first hour or so of the game that allows you to make the already easy platforming easier, which is only made wilder that pretty much 90% of the collectibles are for the upgrade systems in the game and the humor really outstays its welcome, like after the 50th vomit joke I just started rolling my eyes at them so even if your looking for a plat former with 'edge' this isn't it, unless your definition of edge is repeating the same jokes 1000 timesShow moreShow less
