A live Galactic War co-written by players worldwide that turns friendly-fire chaos into the live-service co-op blueprint

Our Verdict

A milestone the live-service genre needed

Drop Helldivers 2 back into the moment it launched and its weight comes into focus. In early 2024, "live-service game" had become shorthand for a launch-day disaster — gouging monetization, retention metrics above all, gameplay subordinated to the business model. Against that backdrop, this game cleared a million copies in three days, became the fastest-selling PlayStation title ever, and crossed twenty million inside a year — with nearly sixty percent of sales on PC, an extraordinary split for a PlayStation first-party game and proof its pull reached past the console ecosystem.

Awards and historical standing

The honors piled up to match: Best Multiplayer at The Game Awards, Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joysticks, Online Game of the Year from the D.I.C.E. Awards, and more — sweeping nearly every multiplayer-and-co-op accolade going that year. It proved a single thing the industry needed proving. A live-service game does not have to trade away its fun for retention; put the fun first and the commercial success comes looking for you. That is its place in the record — a positive template the industry keeps citing.

None of which means it arrived flawless. The same trophy case sits above a launch that buckled, a currency tangle that frustrated newcomers, and an engine the studio itself conceded was a mistake. The achievement was never perfection. It was getting the one thing that mattered — the moment-to-moment fun — so right that the rough edges read as forgivable rather than fatal.

Who should buy it, and who should walk past

So who is it for? The answer is clear. If you are the sort who happily pulls on a headset, jumps on comms with three friends, and can laugh both at being launched back to the spawn by a teammate and at launching them yourself — this game is your next few hundred hours. Its joy rests almost entirely on making chaos with real people. The more hardcore and cooperation-minded the co-op shooter fan, the more value you will wring out of it.

The joy of co-op on comms

Flip it around. If what you want is a self-contained story with a beginning and an end, a quiet solo grind through the campaign, or a "clean" battlefield with no friendly fire, it will most likely let you down. Without squadmates it deflates, and the repetitive mission structure surfaces faster. For the solo player fixated on narrative momentum, this is not the game built for you. It is worth flagging plainly rather than burying in a footnote.

One last thing deserves a mention: Arrowhead's posture. From balance walk-backs to major updates, the studio has apologized in public and rolled back contested changes more than once. That willing-to-listen humility is a rarity in live service, and it is the reason the reputation recovered after those early server storms. Set against its most direct rival, Deep Rock Galactic — itself excellent — what that game lacks is this living, player-authored war unfolding in real time. That is the one thing about Helldivers 2 that cannot be cloned, and the reason it is worth your time.
