Don't worry about the price, its basically buying a real life Hot Wheels track.Show moreShow less
A phenomenal racing game I cannot recommend. Get it together devs, and talk to your customers. -ONE camera view option -No bots in multiplayer -Can't change basic multiplayer settings like # of laps -No public lobbies or servers, just matchmaking, and 0 matchmaking options or filters -No way to get new cars except from random daily selections and lootboxes -2 game modes, 1 for online. -No crossplay And so on, those are just the biggest ones and the ones that have been in racing games and online multiplayer games for DECADES. Fix all that and this is a 10/10 game, with loads of content and a great track editor guaranteeing infinite more quality content in the future, but as is I think most people who buy it will be quickly disappointed.Show moreShow less
Give us a fat ACCELERACERS® content DLC with tracks as different realms and specially all Teku, Metal Maniacs, Racing Drones and Silencerz cars!Show moreShow less
DON'T BUY THIS GAME FOR NOW! The game is great, actually it more than lived up to my expectations. BUT there isn't enough content to justify the price, wait for a sale. And do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy the Ultimate edition. It DOES NOT include all future content. It's also missing the 3rd season pass. The game DOES NOT include cross platform feature, in other words, the multiplayer will be dead on PC in a couple of weeks. Game runs great, didn't witness any crash or bugs, which is quite impressive. I recommend you wait until some real "ultimate" version is released with all the DLC included because these bs bundles are a scam pure and simple. I bought the ultimate bundle because I am extremely stupid and I don't deserve the oxygen I breathe every day. But I KNOW that you are a good boy that probably don't eat sh1t for breakfast like me, so you WILL NOT buy the most expensive version, I have faith in you.Show moreShow less
My roommate's girlfriend saw me playing this and said "Hot Wheels? What are you, FIVE?!?" Then without a shred of irony took my roommate to the Barbie movie.Show moreShow less
This has good game-play. So why the thumbs down? Let me explain. There is no way this game deserve AAA price. Quite frankly its a joke. Especially when you consider the price of the upcoming DLC which should just be part of the game. When you compare the content of this to something like Forza Horizon What a difference, This game needs to be a fraction of the price. The good - Great game-play and arcade physics. Great graphics, HDR is amazing. Game runs very well. The bad - as said above. Lacks content, way over priced. There are only two modes. 3 lap race or time trial. That's the entire single player "campaign" with some "boss battles" sprinkled around. The game-play loop consists or drifting to build boost then boost. Rinse and repeat. Its basically a shallow Mario Kart without the power ups. Now this wouldn't be so bad if there was lots to unlock but there is not and it s MAJOR grind. You have to win about 10 races just to afford one "blind box" I'm already getting double ups and I have only played for a few hours. Its the most grindy game I have played recently. It hurts me to write a bad review for this because it could have been amazing- At a fraction of the cost and less grinding I would have whole heartedly recommended this game. I just cannot justify recommending it at this price.Show moreShow less
Love the game, but it has some flaws. Purchased for myself and my 5 year son that loves hot wheels. He waited months for the game to come out, in pure excitement that his favorite hot wheels cars where in such an exciting racing game. All he wanted was the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Between the two of us, we beat every race and boss, and earned that DeLorean. As my little dude was admiring the car in his collection - he went to add it to his favorites and instead hits the wrong button and POOF! Car is gone. So we raced on! Going over all the tracks again, earning coins, buying blindboxes again and again. Finally it appeared in the shop for 2000 coins. After selling a few cars, we purchased the DeLorean. Happiness achieved... An hour later... He's admiring the car in his collection, he puts the steam controller down, one of the LH or RH buttons is pushed against a nearby object... POOF! Car is gone. Developers Please Take Note - Your audience has a vast age rang. But most certainly, 5 year old boys will want to play your game. It must be considered that such a small person can easily make mistakes. I ask that you consider putting an "Are you sure?" dialog in place, when selling cars for gears or coins. Aside from that - This game is a LOT of fun. The cars are awesome. The tracks are really cool. It feels like a mix of Trackmania and Need for Speed (drifting is fun) placed in a world of Hot Wheels awesomeness. A little pricey, but we've already put 173 hours in and the game has certainly entertained me and my son. If you loved Hot Wheels as a kid, you should definitely grab this game.Show moreShow less
Hot Wheels Unleashed has very glaring problems that can not go unaddressed. I have a video talking and showing the issues, but also for the sake of the Steam review, I also listed out the issues in written form below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqNGRJw50ag No Vehicle Classes In Unleashed, there are no vehicle classes. All the cars can race together, which sounds cool on paper, but this is not a great setup as underperforming vehicles are pretty much useless. DDragonshark has an amazing Steam guide that rates the fully upgraded vehicles into different tiers, which I highly suggest you check out. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2652689098 What we can see from this guide is that there is a good amount of vehicles that lack critical stats to be viable in racing. You can see this issue very clearly with the AcceleRacers Deora II. People are upset that this DLC vehicle was very underwhelming, with many saying they need to improve it. If they had vehicle classes, then this wouldn’t have been an issue because it would have been appropriate for a slower car class. Instead, players just end up gravitating to the best vehicles while ignoring these weaker vehicles. What's the point of using a slower, less capable car that will put you at a huge disadvantage? I can not stress on how big of an issue this is, as you will see later on that this one design choice has a cascading effect on other aspects of the game. Botched Difficulties The harder difficulties are way out of whack. On Hard and Extreme, the AI has a ton of rubberbanding and boost. This turns even some of the slower cars into absolute speed demons when the AI has control. It's already hard enough to win while using the best vehicles, but you can not keep up when using less capable cars. If you want to use an underperforming vehicle, you actually have to lower the difficulty to medium or easy in order to be able to even win with it. The higher difficulties need to be readjusted. They have to scale depending on the vehicle you choose, plus the absurd amounts of rubberbanding, and boost need to be lowered. Unrewarding Unlock System Unleashed has two ways of getting new vehicles. The first method is their blind box system. You can either win these blind boxes, or get them with coins that can only be gained through playing the game, so no actual money is required. However, this unlock method just sucks. It works similar to loot box systems in other games, meaning you don’t know what you will get and duplicates are very common. The second method is their limited offers. You get seven random cars that can be bought with those coins, and these offers refresh periodically, giving you another random seven. This is at least better, but you will still get vehicles that you already own shown on the store. You also might have to pay more credits for these cars than just outright purchasing the blind boxes. None of these methods feel like you are rewarded for your hard work. It's all based on random chance if that vehicle you want will come from a blind box, or show up in limited offers. Lackluster Progression So what happens when there are no vehicle classes, with an unlock system that can give the player any car in the game? The result is that Unleashed has a very lackluster sense of progression. You don’t go from slower vehicles, and work your way up as you can start out with some of the most capable cars right away. The only real notable progression is that the tracks get more complex the further you go into the career. That is pretty much all the meaningful progression you can expect in Unleashed. I know that some players might not care about this, but this is going to put a lot of people off from the game. Normally, the point of a racing game is to start off slow and work your way up. That basic fundamental is missing here, which means a crucial part of the experience for many players is just gone. High Cost I did previously talk about how I believe that Unleashed was overpriced when compared to games like Forza Horizon 5. While I do agree my points were not the best in that video, the monetization scheme in this game has only added to this original problem. So far, there are a total of three season passes planned. Assuming each season pass will be $30 like the first one, that means you’ll have to spend $90 for all three passes. That is almost the same price as two copies of the game! On top of this, if you buy the Ultimate Stunt Edition, you don’t even get the third season pass. What's the point of a $90 'Ultimate Edition' that doesn't have all the content? They also have racing seasons, which are limited time battlepasses that have to be bought separately, even if you own the Season Passes. Being that the racing seasons do not last forever, they are punishing people that will buy this game months or years after its release. If you want content from a racing season that you missed, then you are out of luck. This isn’t free to play or a Call of Duty type game where the developers can get away with this type of monetization. This is an arcade racer, and like I covered in my video ‘The Gaming Industry Doesn't Understand The Arcade Racing Market’, many arcade racing fans will not put up with this. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for additional content, but how they went about it was poorly done. While buying the DLC items individually is not too bad, the season passes, racing seasons, and the price of the game needs to be adjusted. The planned content should only be spread across two season passes. Also, the racing seasons should not be time limited, and included in the season passes. Lastly, regarding the price, it's pretty telling that I was able to grab the base game on sale for $30 on the Switch in early December. Also, Steam shows the base game has gone on sale for $35 three times since release. That isn’t even accounting for the other two editions of the game, but it seems that Unleashed is struggling at its current price tag. While Hot Wheels Unleashed has very fun gameplay when everything goes right, I just can not recommend this game in its current state. Unleashed needs some serious reworking to have it reach its full potential, as it suffers from some inept design choices that leaves the game feeling unrewarding, unbalanced, and expensive. Milestone, it's time to fix Hot Wheels Unleashed.Show moreShow less

(Update Nov 19, 2021) TLDR; I cannot recommend this game, even at a sale. Some commenters below *suggest* that issues I list in my original review have been addressed. The patch notes say otherwise. The commenters are likely referring to changes to the limited offers. The change is okay. "We increased the number of available vehicles from 5 to 7. Also the time needed to refresh it has been shortened from 4 h to 1:30 h. Moreover, we slightly reduced the chances to find common cars in this shop." HOWEVER, I didn't even mention this in the review. patch notes can be found here: https://hotwheelsunleashed.com/game-updates Now, RD02 was nerfed, but that was before my review was posted. So a single car out of 66 was deemed worthy of a revision. This does not change the abysmal vehicle balancing. We're talking about TOY cars. You should be able to pick whichever is your favorite, and be competitive, even if that means adjusting your playstyle to adapt. Another comment, well intentioned, but illustrative of a point I'd like to make: "For a few dollars the Race Season content truly makes the game shine." Consumers are paying $50 dollars for this game. I would NOT suggest investing in the race season to improve your gaming experience. The race season does note eliminate AFK players, which is this game's biggest issue. An issue which, as I highlight below, can literally make the multiplayer unplayable. Additionally, I still say that the DLC is basically no content INCLUDING the race season. Why? Well, at current pricing, you are paying $6 for 6 DC themed cars. How many of those are viable multiplayer options? (Idk, I can't be bothered to look it up) There's some other items in the season, but if you've played the game, you know that they are actually worthless. Trust me. Originally, this review was to be much longer. I had a whole section about whether this is a Hot Wheels game, or just DC Kart Racers. I complained about how certain cars can be catapulted into the air when someone rams you. Heck, I didn't even mention all the bugs I encountered because they didn't impede gameplay. So anyways, I went back and *tried to play some more after the update. There's still AFK players. And at 9:30 USC I couldn't even find a match. (Did I mention that there's no way to back out of lobby search? You have to force stop the game) Game's dead on PC, bro. Consistently less than 400 online during PEAK hours. I played this game for 50 hours, and waited a month after release to review it. I still stand by that review, because it is all still true. Also, you can apparently earn coins via Quick Races. So there's that. (original review Oct 26, 2021 50.7 hours playtime) I like this game. But honestly, I can't recommend it. Track editor and livery editors are great. Campaign is really challenging, but fun. There is no balance in this game. It's like it was never playtested. Why have 60+ cars when only 5 are viable choices? Upgrades don't matter, they only widen the gap. Coins are required to get cars. Multiplayer is THE ONLY way to obtain coins (campaign mode gives a FINITE amount of coins, and it's nowhere near enough). Coins are rewarded for EVERY placing in a race. A nice thought for accessibility. There is NO IDLE PLAYER KICK. This has led to an exploit where sit idly in lobbies for hours to collect coins. In general, this is a nuisance. Half of your 12 player lineup is idle, so it's really a six player race. Fine. When you complete a lap, you have to avoid the AFK roadblocks. Not fine. Players are rewarded for this behavior. Yesterday, I couldn't even play the game because I was continuously placed in the same lobby. The lobby of an ongoing race consisting entirely of AFK players. Did you know there is no time limit for races? I'm not mad that no one thought of this before launch. I'm mad that the problem still exists after the first DLC is being sold. DLC which, by the way, costs half the price of the game and is basically no content. Buyers deserve to know what they're getting into, so I'm leaving a negative review.Show moreShow less
