For anyone with good reflexes and a taste for ultra-violence, good music, and retro graphics. Read no further - go buy the game. Don't even wait for a sale. If you have slow reflexes, or bad coordination however; or if you simply dislike difficult games - this game is really not for you. In my own case despite having terrible coordination over all, I managed to grind my way to level 10 before giving up. This is not the games fault, but merely a lack of the required ability to finish it. The game has thousands of reviews into the Overwhelmingly positive category - so I think it's safe to add a thumbs down for casuals and the slower reflexed among us to be wary about spending your money. I would recommend checking out a gameplay video or trying it on someone's family account before buying it yourself. The difficulty is pretty steady from level 3 on so you can get a good taste for it pretty quickly.Show moreShow less

While I didn't like this game and I regret buying it, it's not the game's fault but my own. This game is very fast-paced, very precise and very unforgiving. It is a hard game, even from the beginning. If those qualities do not appeal to you then you will not enjoy this game. That said, the soundtrack is fantastic and it is a very solid game. Just be wary before purchasing that it's the right kind of game for you.Show moreShow less

I can't recommend this experience to the average gamer. It's trippy, it's slick, and it's stylistic, sure. The premise and ambience are cool and the overall visual execution is pretty good. However, it's riddled with gameplay issues that ultimately bring the entire experience down. Don't take it the wrong way, there is some fun to be had here. If you enjoy extremely fast-paced top-down violence with a degree of luck, then this might be your sort of thing. For most folks, this will likely end up being more of a headache to play. While it visually nails a retro vibe, this can also be to its own detriment. For some players, you may experience motion sickness or headaches after small amounts of play. The text pops out, vibrates, and changes colors. The game world wobbles a bit and has a static/VHS filter over it. The extremely fast nature of the gameplay can become visually exhausting after a while. The music can become throbbing or annoying during certain sequences. I wouldn't call this game difficult, but brutally random. The AI and hit detection specifically. The AI in this game seem to have some kind of random omniscience. You can attack an enemy head on, and sometimes they'll instantly kill you. At other times, they won't even react. This is compounded by the fact that there is no wind up or hit spark for any attacks made by enemies. They only need to touch you and you are dead. They also have super speed, meaning you'll have only fractions of a second to react most of the time. Gun-toting enemies are especially egregious of this behavior. Sometimes you can sneak up on an gun armed opponent and K.O. them easily. At other times, they'll sense you immediately, do a 180 degree snap turn(like an aimbot), and kill you from several yards away. They'll even snipe you from outside your view. It's almost bizarre, as sometimes the AI purposely plays "poorly", as if to be a good sport about it. Occasionally, I'd encounter enemies who couldn't shoot straight, or had trouble turning. At other times, they'd resort to the same "snap and kill" behavior. The big keyword here is "Sometimes", because that's pretty much this game in a nutshell. Sometimes the AI is brutally efficient to the point they might as well be cheating. At other times they are so clueless they won't hear gunshots even when you fire right next to them. Sometimes doors will cover you, and other times enemies will see you through them and shoot you. Sometimes you can fire a full-auto weapon and no enemies will come running, and other times the entire level will be alerted. Sometimes your weapon will hit the enemy, sometimes it misses entirely. Which leads to the next point, the hit detection is very spotty. The weapon mechanics in this game are fun, but they also seem to not connect half the time. Melee weapons seem to hit in a cone in front of them, but if you are too close to your opponent, you'll do no damage. However, they can still hit within a certain distance. If you end up walking on top of your enemy before swinging or shooting(say, in a furious brawl with multiple opponents), too bad. They'll instant kill you and you'll be forced to restart. I think it really all comes down to consistency. I'm fine with the idea of a super fast murder spree retro game, but only if the rules are internally consistent. A lot of my victories feel like luck, and a lot of my losses feel cheap. I haven't played the second game, so hopefully these issues are ironed out. It's a solid concept, I just wish it was executed better. Steam CuratorShow moreShow less

Hotline Miami is immensely frustrating. This game has two identities and tries to tackle both at the same time. One side, which the game tries to advertise, is a high octane, high speed, arcade-like beat ‘em up. The other part, which comes with the one-hit you die gameplay is a meticulous precise strategy game. The games mechanics work like the latter, yet it insists it's the former. What you get is a luck based game. Enemy detection is sometimes slow, and sometimes, you won't even be through the door and get shot. Sometimes, you shoot enemies and they die, sometimes blast them with a shotgun and they just get knocked over, and sometimes, they straight-up run through bullets. Enemy hitboxes are unbelievably broken. This would be fine, if the game didn't rely on the "you have to be perfect" mindset to beat the levels. When the enemies and weapons are this inconsistent, you're not doing trial and error, you're playing a roulette wheel. You can go through the EXACT same movements in a level, and sometimes, you'll pass flawlessly, and sometimes, you get blasted immediately. I can understand it's high reviews, some people will say this is just high difficulty gameplay. To me, good difficulty comes from a game being difficult by tight but fair mechanics. This game's difficulty comes from its inconsistency, randomness, and frequent bugs. I understand why some people will like it, but I personally found it's mechanics to be like putting a square peg in a round hole. That's what's so frustrating, I want to like Hotline Miami. The music is great. Its art is great. It's SO CLOSE to perfection, but its flawed gameplay holds it back. Sections like the stealth at the hospital, police station, the motorcycle guy boss, are all sections that want you to play to the exact opposite of what the tips tell you to do, leading to a mixed experience. My advice? Get a gun, fire a shot and shoot enemies as they come to you. You can also get lucky with doors if you stand behind them at a good spot that as enemies enter, they get knocked to the ground from wonky hitboxes. But really, games that pull this style of gameplay of successfully to me are Katana: Zero and Ghostrunner. I never felt like I got better at the game, I felt like I got better abusing the broken mechanics, and by the end of it, I was never satisfied when I beat a level, a boss, the game. I was just relieved it was over and I was one step closing to being done playing. I was personally disappointed, but I hate giving it a negative review. If you read this review and think the problems are light enough to be ignored, by all means, get this game. This game is NOT train wreck, I get the high reviews, it's just one I personally couldn't get into.Show moreShow less
