“CryEngine-powered extraction combat condenses permadeath PvPvE tension into one-hour matches driven entirely by environmental sound hunting and ballistic drop mechanics.”
Our Verdict
# Verdict
Context: pacing-best 5-year longevity work of the extraction genre
The 2018-2019 PC shooter market was full of change — PUBG ignited battle royale, Apex Legends popularized hero shooters, Rainbow Six Siege solidified tactical shooting, and Escape from Tarkov opened the hardcore extraction lane. Hunt: Showdown chose a unique path — fusing extraction tension, R6S tactical depth, PUBG combat pacing, and DayZ permadeath into a singular PvPvE formula.
More dramatic was its 2024 1896 upgrade. Five years after launch, Crytek pulled off an almost unprecedented "cross-gen cutoff" operation — force-cutting PS4 and Xbox One legacy users, migrating everyone to PS5 and Xbox Series X, simultaneously upgrading CryEngine V to CryEngine 5.11, adding the new Mammon's Gulch map, introducing ballistic drop, and rebuilding UI and accessibility. This "I redid it, follow me or not" upgrade in the past decade among mainstream publishers has only been matched by CS GO to CS 2.
Across 5 years, Hunt has sold over 6 million copies. 227,000 Steam reviews hold 78% positive. OpenCritic 78 with Strong verdict. Eurogamer compared its tension directly to Rainbow Six Siege. Edge 9/10. Gamersky's 1896 review awarded 8.5. The work has not relied on famous IP, AAA art, or scripted story — only PvPvE tension, one-hour condensed match length, and permadeath — to stand for 5 years in the hardcore shooter category.
Who should buy it
Group one — players seeking extraction tension but finding Tarkov too cumbersome. If you played Escape from Tarkov and thought "process too complex, match too long, resource grinding tedious," then Hunt 1896 is the 30-minute condensed version — same tension, same permadeath, same high-risk-high-reward, but 4x the pace.
Group two — Rainbow Six Siege hardcore players. If you love R6S's "sound location plus tactical decision plus permadeath," Hunt 1896 is the PvPvE counterpart. Eurogamer comparing it to R6S tension was not hyperbole.
Group three — sound-tracking-flavor players. If you enjoy "judge enemy position by sound," Hunt 1896's environmental audio system is the industry's finest — footsteps, triggers, distant roars, startled crows, leashed mad dogs, each layer a "sound hunt" texture.
Group four — PS5 / Xbox Series X owners. The 1896 upgrade transformed the console version from PS4 / Xbox One era's "second-class visuals" into "4K plus 60 fps plus stereo stage" flagship experience. If you just bought a PS5 or XSX and want a shooter that showcases hardware capability, Hunt 1896 plus Tempest 3D Audio plus DualSense haptic is a top combination.
Who should not buy it
Group one — players hating permadeath. Hunt's core design is "the hunter dies and is gone forever," with extraction failure meaning all gear and experience zero out. If you expect "I lose this match I'll just go again," Hunt will repel you fast.
Group two — players demanding fast-paced combat. Hunt's match length is 30 to 45 minutes, far slower than Call of Duty or Apex Legends. The first 15 minutes may be entirely clue tracking, evading hunters, cautiously approaching the boss. If your purchase motivation is "I want quick fights," you should pass.
Group three — players unwilling to learn matchmaking. Hunt's matchmaking was unstable post-1896 upgrade, with wait times running 45 seconds to 7 minutes, and newcomers in lower brackets repeatedly being crushed by veterans. Crytek's Q1 2025 MMR sorting and newcomer protection patches eased these issues but did not fully resolve them.
Group four — PS4 / Xbox One legacy players. After August 15, 2024, Hunt 1896 no longer supports last-gen consoles. If you only own legacy hardware and refuse to upgrade, Hunt 1896 is not your choice. Consider waiting for used PS5 or Xbox Series S before returning.
Recommended versions and discount lines
First choice — Steam standard version. Launch price 39.99 USD, seasonal sales typically discount 50 to 70% to 12 to 20 USD, the best value. Steam includes the full 1896 upgrade; legendary hunter skins require separate purchase.
Second choice — PS5 / Xbox Series X version. Launch price 39.99 USD, matching Steam. Console advantages are DualSense haptic feedback (PS5) and Smart Delivery cross-gen sync (Xbox). Disadvantages are no Steam Workshop mod support.
Third choice — Legendary Hunter DLC individual purchase. If you have invested 50+ hours in Hunt, you can selectively buy your favorite legendary hunter skins for 5 to 15 USD each — unique appearance plus exclusive weapon skin plus signature BGM. Chinese-speaking-sphere most popular skins include "Shanghai Hunter," "Peking Opera Phantom," and other Chinese-themed releases.
The version not to buy is season passes or ultra-deluxe — legendary hunter skins can be bought individually, no need to bundle all content. Crytek also regularly gifts limited skins to veterans through holiday events, free versions arrive if you wait.
Overall, the 2026 optimal Hunt 1896 path is PS5 plus 4K HDR TV plus DualSense controller plus quality headphones, or PC plus RTX 4070 plus high-refresh monitor plus 5.1 / 7.1 multichannel audio. If you accept the 20-hour learning cost and the permadeath setup, Hunt 1896 will become the shooter you do not uninstall for 5 years.

Alright so this was my second experience in the game and I can say it was one of the most epic, intense and emotional rollerocasters I have ever experienced in a game. I will split this in two parts, BOSS RUN and EXTRACTION --PART 1 -- BOSS RUN --- > launch spider mission in the night with a random partner > get matched with a dude who didn't have a mic and was just nodding his yes/no answer > start the game pretty slowly > since it's night we are extra sneaky > find first two clues > everythingisokaysofar.jpeg > find third clue, have small gunfight with players who eventually disappear > after third clue we make our way to the boss > we hear gunshots in the distance > oh ♥♥♥♥ "we need to kill them after they got the boss for us" - say I to my mute friend > he nods his head in argeement > get close to boss walking on a makeshift plank-bridge above the swamp, and tensions are already building up > as soon as we can see the boss room, the last gunfire echoes from the boss chambers and everything goes silent > only creepy music in the background > "this might be a trap" - I tell my friend > as soon as I look him in the eyes he gets shot and falls down in the swamp > OHSHITOHSHIT.webm > I jump down, go to beneath the boss room and hide in a corner for some time > should I evacuate or should I revive my buddy? > spend the next 5 minutes contemplating > I can't just leave him hanging. > I wait for a few minutes, so they don't camp his body anymore and I run to him to get him up > manage to revive him as we both now hide in a corner > "okay, we can fight the boss or haul ass - it's your call" - say I to my friend > he takes some time to think this over > in the end he nods his head in an ecstatic manner pointing up to the boss room > we climb up the ladder and enter the boss room - the boss is at 30% health > boss spits poison and ♥♥♥♥ at us, I take out my dynamite stick and with a price bait from my friend, I throw it directly in it's mouth, obliterating the remainder of it's 30% in one shot. > feelsgoodman.tif > begin banishing process, and the next 3 minutes are the longest in existance > just before the boss is banished a guy storms in to steal our bounty > with a set of precisely calculated bait and switch maneuvers we manage to kill him(luckily he was just one guy) ---PART 2 --- EXTRACTION --- >as the boss completes banishing I collect our bounty and call my friend " GET YOUR F BOUNTY AND LETS GET THE F OUT OF HERE" - say I while hearing gunshots in the distance > we take it, open the second floor door and jump down the river, not looking behind us > "oh ♥♥♥♥ we made it" - say I while taking a breather. My friend nods his head in approval. I look at the map to discover the nearest extraction point some 500 - 1000 meters from us. > "okay we need to circle around it" - and we spend 10 minutes going around to evade campers, but as soon as we approach the point we get shot upon > "RUN RUN RUN" - I scream at him while struggling to zig zag in the swamp which slows your movement speed down > I hear people shooting at us and bullets darting near my head > we manage to double back to near the boss room > "the only plan now is to go across the entire map to the opposite side and take that point, it's too risky here" > the next 20 minutes were spent avoiding rabid dogs, not startling the crows and killing some minor zombos while always paranoic that someone might shoot us in the back of the head >my mute buddy was always there by my side, looking out for me > each time I turn around he had my back > we would check corners, cover each other and generally became best buddies over the course of the game > as we reach the extraction point, I see the horses there, and the next 10 steps to the location give me the most notorious feel of relief - "WE MADE IT" - I scream - "NO ONE IS HERE, SURELY NO ONE DARTED ACROSS THE ENTIRE MAP JUST TO CAMP HERE" > countdown timer begins >20 seconds > 10 seconds > I see my buddy getting anxious, as he can taste the sweet deserved victory closing on us > my teammate cautiously waits behind some boxes, while I run around - "good game my friend, we did good we m..." > at the 5th second I hear a shot and I fall flat on my back as I see the horse carriage right above me > OHGODNO.flac > I hear gunshots as I see the distance from my friend is increasing - 5 meters, 10 meters, 20 meters." > sigh and lean back on my chair - "that was it, he's gonna die, it was all for nothing" - I think to myself as I keep hearing gunshots in the distance > "hes probably going to abandon me and take his loot, thats what i'd do" > as I lay there contemplating whether or not I should leave the game, suddenly the gunshots stop, as I see the distance from my friend closing > coulditbe?.jpg.jpeg > friend hovers over my body reviving me from underneath the horse carriage, I immediately pull out my syrenge as he takes cover and starts shooting covering shots towards the forest where we got shot from > I start zigzaging around as I heal myself - "THANK YOU FRIEND" - I shout in the mic while healing > 10 seconds > I HOPE THEY DONT SHOOT ME AGAIN > "YOU DIDN'T LEAVE ME BEHIND" - I scream in the mic > 3 seconds > "I HOPE WE MEET AGAIN MY FRIEND" - I say while the last covering shots echo out > 1 second > You live to die another day text comes up > WE MADE IT WE ACTUALLY MADE IT > It seems actions do speak louder than words I tried looking for him in "recently played" but seems the game doesn't support this as of yet. Thank you for comming back to get me mute friend, risking your life for me, I hope to see you again some day!Show moreShow less
With the realise of 1.0 the Devs decided to completely change many aspects of the game. One of the initial biggest attractions for many people to Hunt was the fact that the game had a dark, gritty look which was also echoed in the tough, unforgiving nature of the game. It was a slow, tactical game which could burst into action at any moment, whether it be PvP action or you just accidentally wandered in to the middle of a pack of Hellhounds and the resulting noise attracted everything in the vicinity. Unfortunately 1.0 changes a lot of these The graphics are nowhere near as clear or consistent as they were at launch, they have upped the lighting to the point where the once pitch black night is not dark at all. They have reduced the LOD so much that texture pop-ins happen all the time, this is really off putting in a stealth game when you are looking for enemies in the distance in trees/bushes. Up until 1.0 aiming in Hunt was a two step process, One button to bring your gun up into hipfire stance then another button press to bring you into ADS stance. This, along with some pretty severe weapon sway meant that gunfights in Hunt used to require a great deal of skill. Even people with incredible aim couldn't just one tap everyone from anywhere. It meant fights on average lasted longer than other FPS games and this required players to be more than just a 'Good Shot' in engagements, flanking, retreating and re-engaging, using decoys or even triggering AI to help you win fights all happened frequently. However the introduction of 'Gunslinger' mode allows players to bypass the two stage aiming system, with Gunslinger the player is always in hipfire stance, meaning they have an advantage on anyone not using Gunslinger as they only have to press one button to shoot instead of two, and although the Devs claim there is a disadvantage to using Gunslinger I have yet to see where any disadvantage lies. The removal of the weapon sway has meant that anyone with halfway decent aim can get headshots quite easily, both of these changes have reduced the skill ceiling whilst also reducing the average length of gunfights which in turn has seen a reduction in the need to flank etc. This has imo made the game a little boring. If I wanted insanely accurate guns and fast gunfights I wouldn't be playing a game like Hunt as there are so many other games that allow me to play that way easier and with more enjoyment and variance. They also decided to add a 3d pinging system, it feels so out of place in the game it's ridiculous. I realise they wanted a way for random teams to communicate without using in game VOIP but instead of having the mark only appear on the compass they make it 3d, reducing a huge skill in the game which was being able to quickly and accurately describe the location of an enemy. As far as I'm concerned the Devs have spent over a year and a half making a game that caters to the audience that initially bought the game and supported it an audience that loved the slow paced, stealth and tactical heavy requirements, only for them to turn around and slap those supporters in the face by springing a dumbed down, easier to play and more accessible to the average player version of the game just before full launch. It reeks of a lack of confidence in the original concept and gameplay and stinks of a company who are struggling financially screwing over those that where there when needed in order to chase that mainstream cash. I've been eagerly awaiting the full release of this game for nearly 2 years and I couldn't be more disappointed in the outcome. Edit to add: I didn't realise that 1.0 increased the price to £36 for the little content in this game (two maps, 3 Bosses) it really isn't worth it with that price point.Show moreShow less
The game itself is great, the new engine update makes it look a lot better than before, it has removed all the jaggy outlines on a lot of objects/models and for the most part performance seems to be the same or better with DLSS. The UI is absolutely terrible though, they need to fix it, it's a complete step backwards from a UI that was already a bit awkward to use. Giving it a positive review, just fix the UI, there's no point reviewbombing the game because of the poor UI when the gameplay is great.Show moreShow less
Edited on 12th December, 2025 I couldn't help but edit this review to make it up-to-date. Unfortunately, however, My thumb-down still holds. If you like to take a look at my original review posted last year, you can find it below. Consider this edit as an addition to the previous review to reflect what I think of the current state of Hunt: Showdown. Crytek decided to give a huge load of F-you to its players. The Murder Circus has returned, and with that the obnoxious Shredder and Post Malone hunter skin. I will not elaborate on these two again; head over to the past review below to see why I dislike them. But to sum it up, the Shredder is OP and is not fun to fight against, and the real-life celebrities does not fit in Hunt's world, no matter their popularity and their love with Hunt: Showdown. In the recent 2.6 patch, they turned to more worse monetization to have their players pay: Story Challenges and profile customization, which is a worrisome change regarding their content delivery. Story Challenges, as the name suggests, are sets of challenges you can finish for some rewards with some story. There are two storylines at this moment, but one of which is behind the paywall and cost almost double the amount of a single Battle Pass. It's also time-limited, meaning that you cannot obtain those rewards after the time limit in any way; not from Dark Tributes, not from Twitch Drops, whatsoever. What's worse is that it has less rewards than the current Battle Pass, but you also need to work more to earn those rewards. They could've released those rewards as another DLC or simply another in-game bundle items, but they decided to cost you more by manipulating the players' FOMO, both in money and in time. Profile customization is another hideous stuff Crytek brought in. What this does is that it lets you customize what statistic values you want to show with your profile cards, for example, your K/D, the number of your maxed-out hunters, the total amount of Bounty cash earned, etc. The problem is that most of the weapon stats are locked behind the paywall, and will only start tracking after you buy them. Which is nonsense because they did track them via the Book of Weapons before the 1896 re-launch, so they are clearly capable of doing so, but they chose not to in favor of monies. Not only that, you cannot choose your avatar background of hunter skins you own, no; you gotta pay extra to fancy up your profile card with your favorite hunter. No one asked for this feature, no one thought this is a good idea, but somehow, Crytek saw this as an opportunity to pull cash from their players and went to shove this in their face. Now, many people will say that these are just cosmetics (like weapon skins and legendary hunters) and will not affect the core gameplay, and that I simply don't have to buy it if I don't like it. However, if we aren't vocal enough about these kind of things and let them pass with "they gotta make money somehow," I'm sure they'll try to push more greedy stuff solely for more profit while aggravating their players' experience even further. It's a real shame that once one of my favorite game has gone downhill this far. Sure, there are some improvements and positive additions which I do like. However, the downside is too heavily outweighing the upside to defend Crytek's current stance. The Hunt right now is just a husk of its former self barely held together. I still had hope during the last event, hoping it will be better in Christmas season. Turned out it isn't, and will not going to be. I'm not saying that I'm going to stop playing Hunt entirely, but I'm not inclined to indulge into it as I have before anymore. Just bring back the pre-1896 Hunt: Showdown, ffs. Original review on 26th December, 2024 I never thought I will be writing a "Not Recommended" review for this game. As you can see from my playtime, I've poured quite a huge part of my free time into Hunt. That itself proves my fondness to this game. I started playing right after its early access, back when there was no "1896" in its title. I was drawn into the grim, ruthless nature of the Hunt; everything around you can and will kill you, and you have to make the most of what you have―your equipment, your trait, your position and your knowledge of other enemies' equipment, trait and position. Forming a strategy is a must to at least survive, even though that means you're leaving without bounty. You need to traverse the map carefully, paying attention to the surroundings, and plan your next move deliberately. Failure to do so will result in your (and your partners') death, losing everything you brought in. Every firearms had something to offer; each gun had its own strengths and weaknesses, so there was no such thing as "trash weapon" nor "superb weapon," meaning that you would always have a chance to topple over enemies, if you know how to play your gun right. The world and environment is something that no other game would be able to pull off, its occult-esque darkness surrounding the world, which can be found both in-game in the lore book, i.e. the Book of Weapons and the Book of Monsters. The events pre-1896 were on track with its lore and brought interesting seasonal addition into the game in the form of short stories (and some cool narrations along with them). But right now, after Hunt's 1896 reboot, everything matters no more. They completely removed all the books from the game, so we can't even have a look of the game's lores anytime you want (Crytek did announced that the books will be available on Hunt website, but why ripping them away from the game in the first place?). Gunfight-wise, they've started to add more and more broken weapons and traits which makes any strategic aspects completely useless. They are now encouraging more fast-paced fights by implementing absurd equipment and buffing up more spammy weapons. They made every gun have all same custom ammo, made every shotgun buffed, made more expensive weapons powerful, and de-penalized being downed with Revive Bolt and Restoration Shot. The worst weapon so far is the "Shredder," a crossbow-ish weapon that shoots sawblades semi-auto that ricochet off the walls and home on enemies in proximity. That's the most absurd mechanics I've ever seen in any other shooter games (other than CoD), and it doesn't even fit into the game's original gunplay system in any way. They completely lost touch on what to do with equipment and are only focusing on attracting major audience by steering away Hunt's core gameplay. What dove a final nail in the coffin is the recent event, Post Malone's Murder Circus. Before this event, at least themes of each event were always on par with Hunt's originality. But the Murder Circus is all for Post Malone, a real-life celebrity (evident as shown in its title). Almost all weapon skin has a "PM" initials engraved, and there are two Post Malone Hunter skins in the battle pass. If I ever wanted to see a famous musician or actor, I'd go play CoD or Fortnite. I liked Hunt for its own unique atmosphere, not for having a real-life celebrity. I don't know what to think of Hunt: Showdown anymore. This isn't the Hunt I used to know. Once a dark, tense and slow-paced game, with an actually fine-balanced equipment, has become nothing but a so-called "Western" run-and-gun trigger-happy shooter. I may come back when my Hunt partners group up for a couple of matches, but I'm not going to actively play this game onwards. (Edit: some typos)Show moreShow less

Update:They have released a video acknowledging the poor UI, while they did say they will work on it this review will remain negative till the new or fixed UI is implemented to the game ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nah yall should feel embarrassed about this new UI, like I legit refuse to believe you play tested it. Why is it all so BIG, the buttons make no sense too. Why is it space to pull up my hunter menu and then enter to confirm the action and not just space again. The whole thing is a mess and clearly was made for console players, but legit makes me not want to touch your game.Show moreShow less

Ive absolutely loved Hunt over the past year, but if the latest release reflects the launch version, then i wont be staying for long. The graphics have been massively downgraded Textures on the ground, rocks, players and NPC's are like running on medium to low settings before Global lighting has seemed to be increased, further highlighting the downgrade in textures The new menu system is counter intuitive, and far too complex and busy Seem to be a delay in hit detection now, i was fanning with the chain pistol and only half were showing as it couldnt keep up I really dont think that many PC players want to have cross platform play if the game is going to be downgraded like this Please devs can PC platform have the visuals back ! The pre release gameplay in very much darker enviroment was always something i was hoping would make its way into the game - there still no reason the have the torch tool Ive left a negative review, in a hope that this will get the attention of the devsShow moreShow less
I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single farther to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.Show moreShow less
The new Hunt rework made the game unplayable for me. Horrible stutters when: - Getting shot - Shooting at s/o - Going into dark sight - Doing other interactions with map and inventory objects Obviously with the lighting changes, a performance hit is expected. But I have a Nvidia 4090 RTX, AMD 5800X, M2 SSD and 32 GB RAM and i only get around 120 FPS, while having massive drops when looking at certain directions. Changing the settings didn't help. Beyond that, the UI made the game unplayable. - It is confusing how to invite people into your party - Menues are now ordered horizontally, similar to CoD and Netflix - You can't horizontally scroll the menues with your scroll wheel - I don't understand how I can properly equip and customize my hunters - Items have gotten "rarities", which colors the background of these items, which will clash with other UI elements, making the UI even more unreadable - When you start up the game, you get a store front and ads for bundles - I don't see where my MMR is - I can only see my teammates loadout in menu via multiple clicks. You can't see the loadouts ingame. - You have to sometimes hold keys or suddendly just tap them when switching menues. Buttons ingame have been made smaller so that it is harder to click them. Honestly, I can't play the game anymore. I don't have the patience to click through another netflix style menu, not understanding where I am, what I am doing and where I have to go to setup my hunter for the next game. This is by far the worst UI I have ever experienced on PC since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022). It is confusing, unfriendly to use and players that might have visual imparities or are disabled will have trouble - this is all in all a horrible mess. And seemingly all that, only for Crytek to introduce a big storefront screen right when you start up the game. I won't rate the other improved aspects in-game, as of right now I am more clicking in the menues than playing the actual game. Can't rate what you can't play. I'll review this game positive, once Crytek has made the necessary changes to bring this game to a playable state.Show moreShow less
