Aside from enjoying this game immensely, and now being able to enjoy it alongside my child, the 2.0 release happening at the same time as LEGO The Skywalker Saga has made me think: Hydroneer's tiny dev team may have not been able to deliver "full" multiplayer, but they have been honest and upfront about this and keep in constant contact with their players. Meanwhile WB Games and TT Games massive dev team dropped features at the last minute that they had previously promised, released a heavily bugged game and haven't patched or communicated with their players for weeks. I know which I prefer - which is why Hydroneer gets thumbs up from me. Remember, a thumbs up for a developer that has the respect to update their community, despite their trials is a thumbs up for good dev-player relationships.Show moreShow less
49 hours into the game and loving it to come back to find my world is completely wiped, went looking online to find help and found out this has been an issue for over 2 years now and is still not fixed to the point the discord literally has a section for shared save files to get you restarted somewhat after your save is corrupt and unrecoverable... Pretty poor from the dev's to bring out dlc before fixing this issue. No point playing when you know every time you leave it may not work when you return, very disapointed will never support this company again!Show moreShow less
While this game is great, it largest limiting factor would the the lack of a true multiplayer. All this game needs is a true multiplayer. If its servers fine, if one person hosts and others join fine. I know many others could agree with me.Show moreShow less
Imagine you're happy with your tier 2 automation set up. It was somewhat temporary but now you're ready to break into tier 3 so you want to straighten your base up. You've been mining down in a cool looking dwarven ruin but your stuff is just laying all over the cave floor and it looks like you're some kind of dwarven hobo. You want some foundations at least so your floor is level. You can't build them, you can only buy them. You head out of the ruin, up 6 flights of stairs, down a couple of walkways, another flight of stairs, an elevator and now you can get to your car. You go to the store on the other side of the map that sells foundations. You can't buy the foundations because you forgot your money in your dwarf hobo cave. There's no inventory, no wallet, you have to literally carry a pile of coins which prevents you from carrying anything else. Back in the car, back across the map, down the elevator, down the stairs, across the walkway, down more stairs, pick up your coins, up the flights of stairs, across the walkway, up the stairs, up the elevator, in the car, across the map. You can buy about 5 foundations at a time because you have to physically put them on a purchase platform and more than that doesn't fit. You hit buy, it doesnt work. You forgot to put your physical coins in the purchasing bucket so you run to your car, pick up your coins, put them in the bucket. Now you have to load those foundations into your car, tediously. After 10 rounds of this you have 50 foundations, not enough but you're about to rage quit so you take what you have. You drive across the map back to your dwarven ruin. You now have to load, 1 at at time, every foundation you purchased into this conveyor belt that will transport the items to your base. It's tedious and takes way too long but it's better than running each block down 1 at a time. Now you need more pipes and conveyor belts. Buying these will be the same as buying foundations, tedious. Luckily there is a store in the dwarven ruin conveniently located 6 flights of stairs above the only place you can use and build with those items. You go load up the purchasing platforms 3 conveyors that will fit for that purchase, you're already dreading this because you'll have to run each conveyor down 1 at a time or use a pallet and carry 4 at 1/4 the walking speed. You hit buy. Doesn't work, you forgot your coins at the store that sells foundations.Show moreShow less

status at this point: too many issues, don't 1 hour review: -great concept -good mechanics idea -tricky mechanics implementation -> sometimes items get just yeeted into oblivion or dont enter into the container -dumping stuff from one container into another shouldn't depend on each single items drop trajectory but be a fixed motion where items can't miss (20 irons rolling awaaaaaay....) -no inventory.. innovative maybe, but not really my preference. mildly annoying -little introduction to the game apart from a linked 3 minute video. everything seems to link to external resources which will probably break long term 4 hour review: -grind in the beginning but automation fairly early on available -random fps drops from 70ish to sub 30. and that early in the game, how will that be late game? 10 hour review: -at the vehilce phase now. now it's not only the resources who get yeeted into oblivion, it's also the trucks. I flip through the air every 3 minutes. On the plus side, I saw the map from above multiple times. -I get stuck so often with these trucks on the least bit of rough mining terrain, I have to reset at least every 5 minutes 10 + 0 hour review: -checked the discussions to find out how whether there are some fixes for above mentioned issues, found the developer stating "this game will crash after an hour if you have a big automated factory". asked about whether I understood statement correctly. Got banned from discussions for being too negative.Show moreShow less

Misleadingly Advertised Early Access Game I've given this game a pretty solid crack over the years and unfortunately I can't recommend it at all anymore. I was cautiously optimistic that the game would improve and the developers would polish it into a finished product but my patience is exhausted and my faith is lost. This game is incredibly buggy and this review has been edited multiple times. Some of the bugs mentioned may no longer apply but I'm confident they'll be replaced by new bugs. This has been an ongoing trend for years. Kind of worse, the developer has been reworking a bunch of mechanics from the "1.0" release. The game has changed significantly in some ways since I first picked it up. Which makes this review scarily relevant even after all those years. This is still an EA game, masquerading as a finished product. The Good Don't let some of the negative reviews about the core mechanics put you off. This is a fascinating game that makes some bold design choices. The core limitation of only being able to carry one item at a time is extremely immersive and is executed pretty well. I loved the low-poly visuals, and the world feels beautifully designed. This is a great game to play casually when you've got a lot of time to kill and want a relaxing experience. Throw on some chilled music and enjoy. The Bad This game is very rough in places. The sound design is just plain awful but that's the least of its problems. Though I strongly suggest muting the soundtrack unless you want brain damage... A major major issue is the physics. It's hilarious how bad it is. There are plenty of physics collisions which will send things flying into the sky. Drove over that tiny rock a bit too fast? Welcome to the stratosphere. Something on top of that bucket you picked up? Well it's now flying away at terminal velocity. Vehicle handling is just generally terrible. This wouldn't be such a major issue if hauling items with vehicles wasn't such a major party of the game. I've got used to saving my game for fear of being stuck in an infinite reset loop which throws me into the air the moment I reset, and lands me somewhere I can't move. It's happened fairly regularly every time I've played this game. A game breaking issue is that you can build things under the ground. Not ground you can dig mind. This in itself isn't a problem but if you can't see the item anymore you can't pick it up. I once lost a stack of 14,000 coins because I accidentally placed it under the ground when I meant to put it on the ground. Now that wasn't a big deal since I bet on this happening and split my six figures worth of coins into lots of stacks. Can you imagine this happening if you didn't? Just lost all of your coins? Too bad. That could seriously have ruined hours of play time... In my latest play through I managed to break sprinting in under 5 minutes of play. The sprint key just wouldn't work. It required a game restart to fix it. I've had enough... I've come back to this game with renewed optimism so many times, only to be beaten down with completely stupid bugs, that I'd class the relationship as abusive. Game performance is utterly abysmal for what it is. I've run this game on both my mid range gaming desktop and my high end gaming laptop and... it sucks. The frame rate will regularly drop to single digits for a few seconds at a time. There have been serious memory leaks in the past which required a system restart to resolve. The game's practically conditioned me to not use lamps as it one point they would tank the frame rate too. Graphics memory usage has also been crazy at times... The Ugly As my title suggests this game is being falsely advertised. Development is still actively underway with new features and bug fixes being intermittently released. Combine that with the aforementioned issues the game has and it's fairly clear that this is still very much Early Access and not a full release. I'm not sure why the developer didn't label this as Early Access other than to give a false impression that it's more finished than it really is. I recently built a site up to full-scale automation again. What shocked me the most is how many machines have been removed from the "1.0" game, only to be replaced by subtly different ones in "2.0". What was the point exactly? Just leave the old machine in the game and make a new one. I think this may have been why some of my Steam cloud saves just disappeared. Presumably they weren't compatible with the new release. I don't know if there's a "3.0" planned but I expect that to blat my saves too. All of the new changes feel forced and stilted. Dirt has invisible tiers now. You get to a point where Tier 1 equipment won't work anymore. Pickaxes and miners will just spark. The dirt doesn't look different mind. You just spark instead of going deeper. Pipes can now hold more than 100% pressure and have pressure caps that aren't given in description texts. Does a pump or pipe going over 100% pressure sound stupid? That's because it is. Change % to a pressure unit and it would suddenly make sense. Use bar, PSI, Pa, or even make up your own... These might sound like nit-picks but I think it's a sign the developer doesn't really care. The tier's are an afterthought to artificially pad game time. Bottom Line I didn't request a refund for this game because I thought it was kind of fun, and I suspected I'd come back to it fairly regularly. I had hoped that if the vehicle and building mechanics were fixed, along with the performance issues, then I'd give it a thumbs up. Now though... I regret this decision. The developers have had a lot of attention via YouTube. They've had a lot of people pay for their game. Years have gone by and it still feels like an Early Access bug fest that's being regularly reworked. Sure there's more content but the game has bugs and an apathetic developer eating at its core. Don't buy this game. Unless you are happy to put up with a lot of infuriating bugs and a developer who's clearly out to get one over people.Show moreShow less

For a game that rewards working at depth it is a remarkably shallow experience. (I am sorry. I had to) My first few hours with this game I was sold. Its a cute game about mining and automating your way out of a somewhat tedious process until money is just rolling in. But honestly I am not sure it is right to call it a game. It is a sand box. I was excited as I transitioned from a bucket and broom to machinery and from hand sorting and smelting to automating, and I was excited to see how much deeper it goes. I put together a pretty basic setup with a single belt fed by a couple drills dropping into the harvester, a gem polisher, and the 7 splitters to drop each resource into a pale or auto-smelter. It worked great. time to set up auto crafting or something. Except that doesnt exist. I quickly found out that my super basic first build is about as good as it gets. I can drop more drills in line, increase water pressure, and optimize distance between drill and source, but thats it. I had basically exhausted the progression in mining. Fine I have tons of money now lets go spend it! There has to be some awesome stuff to get with these hundreds of thousands of coins right? I can get a shiny chair and build a house that has no purpose. Seriously. I hit the end of this game before I finished my first build on my first mine. I opened up another mine and went through the process of loading my car with just enough stuff that it wouldn't take off into the atmosphere and spent hours digging out a nice cave and set up the same exact rig for higher numbers that I dont need on resources that have no use. No new resources, no new crafting, no meaningful purchases and no point to any of it. You might say the point is to optimize and find the best way to set everything up except that the best way is essentially the only way. If your rig works, its about as good as it gets. Hydroneer has a lot going for it, but it lacks purpose and direction, depth and reward. Oh and a ton of optimization and bug fixing. My played hours are vastly inflated by my save randomly corrupting, i lost a truck into the sky, crashes aren't uncommon, and lag is a real problem even at a pretty small scale. It can get there, but this is a top tier demo right now, or a shallow sand box, not a game ready for release.Show moreShow less
