THE UNIQUES: 💎 Music strikes home! 💎 Heartfelt stories. 💎 Pills make you strong. PLAYER GAMING REQUIREMENTS: 💼 Psychological Horror. 💼 Puzzle. 💼 Story Rich. PROS: + Great soundtrack. + Brilliant voice acting. + The story is what makes this game what it is. + Can't progress without certain items. CONS: - No in-game map. - Visuals are a little outdated. - Combat can feel a little off at times. VERDICT: This grabbed my attention as soon as I saw the game in the market, purely for who was running the music THE LIVING TOMBSTONE, man what a guy. He produces top notch music in my option, being able to hunt down his music in these psychological places just sang to me, with my biased option out the way, let's get to the real critics. In Sound Mind really delves deep into some sensitive issues, which the devs tell very well in each tape, the story and relatable characters is what makes the game stand out from all the other psychological horror games I've played, people are really going through these things and understanding these issues put things into perspective for me. Now, this game isn't a home run, the story, music, voice acting are what makes this game but theirs a few downfalls, starting with the game-play, everything runs smoothly but something doesn't feel right in the combat, it's straight forward enough, shoot the enemies in the head to instantly kill them, sometimes I felt like I was hitting them and no damage was being inflicted, this happened a lot during my play-though. Next would be the visuals, you can tell this isn't a game where the devs have millions of pounds and that's fine! Not every company have the means to make a graphical game but it does fall short with other games so it needs to me put down at a minor. Now.... is this worth your time and money? Do I really need to answer this? The straight answer is yes, it has everything it needs to be enjoyed and the asking price is next to nothing, comparing it to bigger games anyway. Honestly, it's a hidden gem and more people should play In Sound Mind. Total Score = 89/100. GAMEPLAY: In Sound Mind is an imaginative first-person psychological horror with frenetic puzzles, unique boss fights, and original music by The Living Tombstone. Journey within the inner workings of the one place you can't seem to escape-your own mind. TLDR: It started off fairly strong before getting worse with each level and eventually overstaying it's welcome towards the end. Played the demo of the first level back in the day and thought it was solid enough to buy the full game. Unfortunately, the beginning of the game is the highlight as it goes downhill from there. After the first level, there is no horror to be found. The "Psychological Horror" tag is a joke here. Just because you are dealing with the psyche thematically doesn't mean that it is actually psychological horror. Psychological horror tends to play on your own fears and your imagination to inspire anxiety and dread in a player through the atmosphere and story-telling; which keeps a player on edge constantly. There is none of that here. The threats are clear and simple to handle. The story shows you some people with troubled minds, but on a very surface-level and bland way. The story is a lot more basic then people seem to think. It is decently put together, but nothing special. It feels like a worse version of a standard "Resident Evil" story with a psychological twist. Though the voice acting is solid, the characters you deal with story-wise are quite by-the-book and not at all interesting. From introduction, their stories were pretty much immediately apparent. Most of the puzzles are boring and just time-wasters. Very few are fun to solve as most are immediately apparent as to what you are supposed to do. Most puzzles are also just repeats of previous puzzles you have already done with concepts that get beat into the ground over the course of a level. The combat is super easy. It breaks up the monotony somewhat, but most encounters past the first level are throw-away encounters with no impact. There are essentially 3 basic enemies that you will run into throughout the game. Standard melee blob, standard ranged blob, and big melee blob. All of them boring to encounter. The "main" antagonists of each level are less of a threat and more of an annoyance throughout. It isn't scary or engaging to deal with them; it's inconvenient. The very first stage is however a notable exception. The game is competently put together, but honestly I would have thought that a game like this would have around a 70~75% positive. I'm shocked it is in the 90+% positive range. There are so many better survival horror games on steam whether you are looking for a better story, better combat, better scares, more engaging enemies and threats, or any combination thereof.Show moreShow less

I usually agree with the general consensus, but this time the "Overwhelmingly positive" valutation is a scam. This game is simply bland. It copies and paste from Alan Wake, Outlast, Resident Evil, but it doesn't add anything to those 10-year-old formulas. It starts off as a strong first person horror, then 2 weapons later, roughly halfway through the game, it becomes a clunky action/fps until the end. The levels consist in areas where you wander hoping to make sense of the objective, puzzles walk on a thin line between confusing and frustrating. There are a couple of cool "OH ♥♥♥♥" moments but that's it. But as Churchill said "If you're going through hell, keep going", I kept on playing just to see where the story would get at, because it was generally praised. The "mental health" elements were very superficial and were solved with the ingenuity of a low-grade shonen manga, but the ending is where the most pathetic "I'm a brave boy" reddit moment takes place, it's not even funny. The "twist" the ending explains could have been an original one maybe 20 years ago, and what doesn't explain is the interesting part relegated to a cliffhanger probably for a sequel. Last but not least, I meet the minimum hardware requirements but this game's framerate goes from 60 fps one moment to 20 the next, while on low graphical setting and looking like a PS3 game. Bottom line? Never trust a word Churchill saidShow moreShow less
Great psychological horror indie game with a strong story-line, extremely well produced soundtrack, memorable tense moments and enjoyable combat mechanics. The first half of the game is very reminiscent of old school survival horror while the second half is more like a psychological thriller. Each level (six in total) are very different from one another and features a terrifying spirit that you must tame. The creature designs are creepy with one in particular being very unique in its ability as it chases you. The puzzle elements are tricky but never difficult if you take your time to look and listen carefully as the solutions are usually next to you either within a note or in a reflection. The only negative is having no in-game map system but instead having an useless pre-placed map at certain locations. The game can be beaten within 10 to 15 hours depending if you are going for all the hidden collectibles. Very enjoyable experience and looking forward to the sequel. [8.5/10]Show moreShow less

Every so often a game will come around that I don't want to stop playing until the end. Typically, I have no problem switching between a couple games every few hours or days as I get my fill of it and need to play something else. In Sound Mind is one of those games that got me invested right from the start and I couldn't put it down until I figured out what was happening in the small town of Milton Haven. You are Desmond Wales, a therapist whose patients are having mental crises and in some cases dying. You start the game by waking up in a dark basement floor of an apartment building that seems to be a manifestation of your mind. In this building, a few of the doors in the apartment building are actually gateways to the homes of your patients like Virginia, Allen, Max, and Lucas. As you enter their homes you are able to find a tape of their therapy sessions with you. When you bring these tapes back to your office, you can turn back time and experience their breaking points. These tapes become explorable levels in which you try to figure out what has happened to your patients. As you progress, you end up discovering that your patients actually are linked in a way that you never imagined. Each area, including the apartment building, have secret areas and have interesting puzzles that must be solved in order to fully explore and understand each character's motivations and emotions. There is a nice variety of puzzles that involve using several tools that you unlock through the play through. As you unlock these tools more of the apartment building opens and you can reach new locations. A few examples of these tools are a shard of a mirror, which you can use to see hidden notes and objects, and a flare gun that allows you to pass thick shadows. Once you reach the end of these areas there is a boss fight which involves using the items you have unlocked to solve these battles which are mostly puzzle based fights. While there are weapons such as pistols and shotguns, they are mostly used to destroy lesser enemies. These enemies have weak points, such as shooting the glowing light on their head for a quick kill. The boss fights are usually fast paced and there is plenty of action to balance out the searching and navigation portions of the adventure. The puzzles remind me of Resident Evil, such as collecting medallions to put into a lock, or twisting valves so fluid will come out the other side of a pipe. Most are simple but some can provide a decent challenge. There are plenty of notes to provide lore and items scattered around the levels such as healing items, ammunition, and pills. These pills are used to permanently increase certain passive stats like how stealthy you are and your max health. I found it fun to search high and low for all the pills in each level and quite a few of them are well hidden and require the use of your tools to find them. The game's environments are really well done. You will investigate different locales such as a lighthouse, a quarry, and a factory to name a few. These levels take about 2-3 hours to fully search and unlock all the secrets. The best way I could describe the story without spoiling anything is to say it's as if David Lynch filmed an episode of X-Files. Plenty of conspiracy and paranormal events fill the 10-13 hour play through. There are also a lot of dark ideas that are explored in "In Sound Mind" such as suicide, PTSD, and domestic violence. I didn't feel as if they were portrayed in a joking way and that these elements were treated with respect and not taken lightly. One of my favorite aspects of the game was that after each level, you can go back to the room of the patient and try to find their secret vinyl album. If you find the album, you can take it back to your office and listen to it on your record player. Each song is sung by the patient and gives a retelling of their story. Each of the songs were really well done and it added an element of sadness on top of their already sad story. All together, the music fit the game perfectly as well, not just with these musical selections. There is a lot to like about In Sound Mind! When thinking back on my experience with the game I would say that the downsides are relatively few. Some of the levels felt like they dragged on and sometimes secrets would be obvious but getting access to them took measures that felt unnecessary. For instance, I could have sworn I knew the way to unlock a secret and it made logical sense but executing it wouldn't work. Also there were some elements of platforming which people may have an issue with since the game is in first person. Overall, In Sound Mind is a gem. If you are looking for a psychological horror game with creepy Twin Peaks and X-Files vibes then I would definitely consider giving In Sound Mind a chance! You can even download the demo to get a feel for the game as well which is great if you are on the fence. You won't be disappointed!Show moreShow less
In Sound Mind is a first person adventure game whose story focuses on mental illness. The player character, Desmond, wakes up in the basement of his office building where lots of strange things are happening. Desmond is a therapist who treats patients, and listening to audio tapes of sessions with his patients transports you to levels based on their stories. The Good • The story has an interesting sense of mystery as you slowly piece together what happened to each of Desmond’s patients, and what is happening to him. • Fight strange creatures in first person shooter combat using a pistol and shotgun. • Defeat bosses which are a manifestation of each patient’s fears and have unique weaknesses that don’t involve just shooting them. • Solve basic puzzles such as finding keys or other objects to unlock doors and activate machines, and using mirrors and light sources to manipulate the environment. The Bad • Terrible technical performance, as the framerate swings wildly between 30 and 80, and frequently stutters/freezes when looking around or aiming weapons, even though my PC is better than the recommended requirements shown on the store page. I’ve tried adjusting every graphics setting in game, but while lowering settings increases maximum framerate, nothing prevents the drops and stutters. • Puzzle game fans need to be aware that some puzzles in later levels are more annoying because you’re constantly being hassled by unkillable enemies, or losing health from poisonous gas, while you’re trying to figure out what to do or where to go. The Recommendation Unfortunately I can’t recommend buying In Sound Mind in its current state. Although the story and gameplay are good in theory, my enjoyment of both was completely spoiled by the terrible performance issues.Show moreShow less
