Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the game in its current state. The idea is brilliant, and it's fun to build a base and take care of your population in your own city or neighborhood. However: Positive: - You can build your base anywhere in the world, thanks to original Google Maps (or similar) images. Buildings and other structures are integrated quite well. At least I never had any issues with the map generation. - Various enemy types - Different customization options for base elements Negative: - Gathering resources takes forever, especially in the late game when most nearby buildings have already been salvaged. - Despite having adjustable difficulty levels, the game is still relatively hard. - There’s no way to regulate population growth. In the late game, it increases too quickly, while at the beginning progress is very slow. - The game has a lot of potential, but currently, only a few mechanics have been implemented. A mechanic to control fertility rates, for example, would be very helpful. - There's no overview of resources. Consumption and production should ideally be shown somewhere in statistical form. - Zombies can destroy heavy walls too easily. - Too few defense options (only towers, fences, barbed wire) - Bugs and glitches - events repeat too often Suggestions: - The ability to build outposts or external storage areas would reduce the need for transporting resources over long distances, making the game feel less dragged out. - Reinforced walls would help make the game more manageable. - Mechanics to regulate population growth - Fixing bugs, as their number is increasing - More events and story elements Most Important: - A clear overview of resource consumption and productionShow moreShow less
Hey how about sending your feedback in the bug reports instead of on you reviews. Your gonna kill a game in EA before it even has a chance to get better. Your advise could be used by the devs directly sending it to them. Just say its in EA instead of running your mouth making everyone else advoid it. Most of you asked for EA expect EA. Circus clowns if you ask me just getting out of your little car flumbing around. This is the problem EA! People expect to much. Its a great work in progress devs it will get better. That mixed in the review score bothers me. Looking good threw another 8 hours at it. Havent had anything to report really i would have sent it. Hey do this for me and me only lol. Let me lock a car to a squad...... eventually. I understand if it takes some time. These fools walk 16 miles and pass up the car they used on the way back to base its like bro...lol. i know its minor.Show moreShow less
The concept of this game is great, and I love the fact that it can be played almost anywhere on the planet. However, there are some significant problems with the game that I cannot overlook, and for that reason, I have given it a negative review. (Looting) The looting in this game is initially fun, but it becomes tedious as you progress and have more people to manage. Micro-managing each squad to search every house becomes a nightmare, especially when you have multiple squads. It surprises me that they didn't think of implementing an auto-looting system to prevent it from becoming so tedious. Moreover, the looting in the game is especially problematic because it is almost necessary for survival. This makes the tedious nature of the task even more frustrating, as i am forced to spend a significant amount of time and effort on it. (Base building) At first, the base building in the game seems very fun and a nicely implemented feature. However, the more you play and the longer you progress in your game, the worse it gets. For instance, if you want to upgrade your wooden wall into a brick wall, you have to deconstruct the wall and build the brick one from scratch. Why isn't there an option to upgrade? That's not even the worst part, as when you do decide to upgrade your wall, you can only assign 3 people to the job, and if it's the best wall in the game, you'll have to wait 3 or 2 days for them to finish the wall. Why can't you assign more people to the job to speed up the process? Furthermore, the same limitations apply to watchtowers and other buildings you can construct. The lack of an upgrade feature and the slow progress of construction, even when assigning multiple people to the job, make base building a frustrating experience that detracts from the overall gameplay. (Story) As for the story, it's decent with some interesting events, but what I dislike the most is how it interrupts the gameplay. When something happens and you receive a radio call, the game either stops completely or makes it impossible to see important squad information on the right side of the screen due to the event. I hope they fix this issue, as it can be frustrating and disrupt the flow of the game. (Other things) Additionally, it's quite annoying that your people won't go out and work during a storm. I think there should be an option to take the risk of working in a storm, even if there could be zombies around. Losing an entire day of work due to bad weather can be frustrating, and I believe there should be an option to work even in poor weather conditions, with the added risk of zombies attacking your workers. (Conclusion) Despite the issues I've mentioned, I still think it's a good game, but the current problems outweigh the positive aspects. I hope the developers will address these issues and improve the game, as it has a great concept and so much potential. However, as of now, I cannot recommend it.Show moreShow less
TL;DR 8/10: Great idea and massive potential, but it isn't there yet. The game feels like it's getting easier to play with the most difficult settings. Wood for construction, wood for cooking... I wish this game wood give me a gosh darn break!! However difficult, modifications to Infection Free Zone seem to be coming in good time. Overview Given the appeal of games like Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville and Judgment: Apoclapyse Survival Simulation, you know ol' Il Pallino just had to try Infection Free Zone. The game starts in the aftermath of a pandemic in which a large amount of people were infected with a disease turned into something similar to zombies and raveged the Earth. The player is challenged to (first scavenge and then) redevelop their starting area for useful buildings. Eventually the infected will discover the player's settlement, and when that time comes, armed squads will need to take the fight to the enemy. Given the current state of the game, the settlement will eventually either be overrun by the infected or will starve to death for a plethora of reasons. Graphics and Sound The dreary graphics are a perfect mood-setter. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3211604192 It's also nice how the game even allows for far away zooming to see what potential resources can be found on the map. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3215578817 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3216822126 The only downer about the graphics is that the people all look AI generated, and every gosh dang male has a beard while none of the women are winning any beauty contests. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3215640478 The sounds are all realistic enough. The howls of the infected are frightening enough and the music that plays when hostile elements are threatening a squad or building is ominous enough to motivate the player to get ready for a fight. Positives and Negatives The main reason why this category is lumped together, is because of the ability to play anywhere in the world. Isn't it cool that the player can play in a place like Truth or Consequences, New Mexico? Only in theory. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3212523249 In practice, the player better plan on playing in a city where there's enough firearms to scavenge to build all five squads if they're playing on the most difficult setting. Ol' Il Pallino played games set in Atlanta, GA, USA (a default city); Meridian, MS, USA; Rushden, Northants, UK; Gainesville, FL, USA; and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne & Wear, UK. So far the one single default city was the only viable city to play in on account of the number of firearms that can be scavenged. In a major city, buildings potentially containing firearms are common enough, but in smaller cities, the predominate buldings are homes which are merely denoted with a question mark, and are most likely stocked with food and/or ammunition. Playing on the most difficult level (minimum survivalists, minimum resources, and maximum hordes) ol' Il Pallino couldn't amass enough firearms to create five squads in time to defend the community. Another double-edged sword is that the player doesn't need to renovate an entire building to make use of it. This was perhaps the best idea in the game, but it was ruined by the fact that if the player wants to increase capacity, first they'll need to vacate the building (reclaiming half of the resources in the process) and then repurpose the building. (Either that, or hope that another building of larger size is nearby to repurpose.) Was it that difficult for the developers to make it to where building expansion doesn't involve the waste of resources? Hopefully not! The imbalanced gameplay caused ol' Il Pallino to quit after Day 36 when the two possibilities were to either get overrun by the infected, or starve. Owing to early access blues, the fields stopped producing grain when the fertilizer ran out. (The fields were growing just fine before fertilizer became an issue.) The event in which livestock is discovered no longer spawns after the current build of the game. (0.24.4.5 Alpha.) Livestock was useful in which it could provide more cooked meals than grain, and even produce fertilizer for the fields to grow even more grain.) Without this, all the player could do to sustain the community was to scavenge canned food. While there was plenty of food to scavenge in the city of Atlanta, the number of infected hordes became so big that ol' Il Pallino had to concentrate all five squads during the night to skirmishing the infected away from the base and sometimes even fighting the infected. During the day, the proverbial Catch-22 was to either send squads to fight the infected looking to hide in buildings, or scavenge for food and risk having to deal with an even larger number of infected for the next night. Using vehicles to run over the infected isn't much of an option in this case due to vehicles having hit points, and squads absolutely needing vehicles at this critical juncture of the game made it impossible to have them repaired at the base. Why do buildings that have already been built need wood to be repurposed in the first place? The current build of the game requires too much wood. Then there's a stupid tutorial requirement to build a wooden tower. (If the player so chooses to accept this tutorial requirement, they best tear down the tower before the infected do, because the player will have the resources to build a metal tower, which is not only vastly superior to the wooden tower, but also requires less wood.) Wood is also needed for cooking food, and while the player will have little trouble finding tress to chop down if their base is near a park or in a suburban (or rural) area, the best bet for wood is to tear down buildings in urbanized areas. While skyscrapers the player doesn't want to repurpose will contain lots of wood, there's no way at this time to tell players what to salvage from buildings, and the amount of bricks that the player will receive from tearing down and salvaging buildings will overwhelm the base's storage. Weather is an issue which is good and bad. Sometimes there may be a clear sky with a full moon which causes the infected to hide during the day, but it's also possible for have rain and a dark sky during the day which causes the infected to become active. This last time lead to ol' Il Pallino's downfall because thirty-six straight (in-game) hours had to be spent dealing with the infected, and the ammunition ran out without the ability to spend the day scrounging for more ammunition. Beyond the playable parts of the map, the scouting of other areas is overly generalistic with the outer areas. One square on the map inferred that there was only research materials, and apart from the number of research materials scrounged being a letdown, more ammunition was scrounged in that expedition. Constructing ammunition (which the player will absolutely need to do later on in the game) requires building a chemical plant. Why not allow the player to scrounge for chemicals? Certainly an industrial area IRL will have chemicals.... RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT? Conclusion Changes to gameplay balance and reception to community feedback (most notably the addition of armor) are both being implemented, so there's not only progress made, but even more to be expected. I said it once and I'll say it again: I wish this game wood give me a gosh darn break with all of the demands for wood!! The honest word of Il Pallino... OR ELSE! Game is good in the beggining but in the long run it becomes completely unplayable, im playing on normal, it took me like 2 hours real time to build those high tier walls which get shattered into pieces by 2 hordes of zombies in couple seconds, when I station my men in a building in my colony they run out of ammo in couple seconds while not even defeating a single horde, guard towers and gates seem to do practically nothing all I could see them do is hold longer than the wall which is quite funny. When I give my squad ammo to inventory and station them in a building they run back to the storage building to deposit it so they can't even have ammo reserve. Can't recommend this game at this stage, as someone mentioned its a small indie game so better wait like year or two until it gets fixed or completely abbandoned.Show moreShow less

A cool map generator with some very basic meh gameplay slapped on top of it. I remember 15 years ago we had online flash zombie games just like this, except complete, with far more content, multiplayer, regular updates and completely free. Now we have a flood of these early access games, which are 10% completed and will take many more years to develop, with many devs giving up after a year or two. Sold to us with a price tag of a finished game. Steam really needs to limit these "early access" titles to something like 10€. There's way too many games that are on a demo stage, being sold at full finished price. Wait a year before purchasing to see if any significant progress and updates are made.Show moreShow less
Great game but for the love of god please make swimming zombies optional. So many amazing base opportunities ruined by zombies apparently swimming through the entire Atlantic.Show moreShow less
I *really* want to like this game, I do. But given its current state I can't recommend it as it's extremely rough around the edges and gets in its own way. Bugs aside there's still a few dozen features missing that the game needs in order to be playable. 1: There's no proper notification when squads are under attack and they *don't* try to defend themselves. Sure, they'll tell you when they see enemies, but the game doesn't pause and let you tell them what to do when they are spotted/attacked. This is a serious issue when you have 4+ squads all at different locations, and when they get caught in the open they are basically dead. On top of that if you've told them to search multiple buildings they won't stay in cover automatically and fight back - they'll simply continue doing what was asked like nothing changed. There also needs to be a way to maintain their current orders (AKA shift-clicking 30 homes to be searched that takes way too darn long) but also suspend them temporarily when directing the squad to defend itself or avoid a horde (a sort of "return to task" button). 2: There's no way to build any basic buildings or upgrade existing ones to be bigger. What's that mean? If you started in a suburb with 15 2 bedroom houses around and some empty land then you're basically screwed. Those 15 houses are unlikely to support your starting population and their needs (warehouses, kitchens, shelters, and a plethora of specialty buildings for production). You could branch out, but that means defending large chunks of the map which means taking enormous amounts of damage from hordes and needing to repair everything, (bad idea) this is also problematic with later days when hordes can easily crush your squads since you have finite number you can deploy at once (I *really* don't know why this is a thing) so you can't even use a mobile defense if you wanted to. All in all the base building is extremely bad. 3: Resource management is... Problematic to say the least. The system for growing and cooking food is extremely volatile, while the system for dismantling houses means you don't have the option to only collect the wood, stone, or bricks from said house. What this means is that by day 20 if you chose to make metal walls you have an excess of wood and bricks. Bricks specifically are a high-end resource, you can easily have 500+ of these which should be about half your storage. Not only do you have to waste time gathering them to get the other resources from destroying buildings but you then have to make a billion warehouses to keep them in (which goes back to the inability to make your own buildings). This pretty much leads to a sprawling settlement where you have to build warehouses so you have a chance to store the things you actually do need before that space is eaten up by the crap that you don't need or want. There's far more wrong with this game right now, but for me these 3 are what really screws it over.Show moreShow less
