Our Verdict
Lay the reviews, the community essays, and the cold numbers side by side, and the portrait sharpens fast: Insurgency: Sandstorm is a small studio's benchmark for hardcore, realism-first team combat, standing on restraint rather than bulk. We landed on 7.8 overall — a figure that honors the heights it reaches in immersion and sound while honestly booking the price it pays in content and barrier of entry.
The objective coordinates and a two-poled temperament
Start with the figures. Metacritic 78, OpenCritic 79, 85% Very Positive on Steam across a hundred thousand reviews — a sturdy line, not a dazzling one. Critic scores run from a 7 at IGN Spain to a 9 at Shacknews, a spread of nearly two points, and that spread is the whole temperament in miniature: the high marks prize its purity in realism and coordination, the middling ones fix on its content, its optimization, its threshold.
In other words, it was never built to please everyone. It is a niche piece where the target audience walks away thrilled and everyone else keeps a polite distance. The disagreement in the scores is not really an argument about quality — it is a split of taste, and which side you fall on is more or less decided by your very first round. That temperament only amplified across years of operation: the players who stayed are intensely loyal, the community runs warm, and the game grew into a long-lived fixture on its narrow road. A six-figure review count at 85% positive is a rare achievement for a niche hardcore title, and it says the road is not wide but it is deep and durable.
Who should buy, and who should steer clear
In the end, whether this game fits you comes down to what you want. If you are willing to slow down and read sound, to relish the tension of fighting by ear with a headset on, to key the microphone and treat coordination as part of the fun, and to stomach the "one mistake and you are out" pressure of high lethality — then it hands you an immersion few peers can copy, practically tailored to you. For that player, the experience of holding your breath and living or dying alongside your squad is something no arcade shooter can match; once it takes hold, going back is hard.

But if what you want is a brisk tempo, the freedom to push in blind, no interest in a microphone and no tolerance for repeated elimination — it will most likely let you down. Its steep curve is openly unkind to solo and casual players. It never bends to your habits; it rewards only your understanding of it. Recognizing that does more for your decision than any score could.
Versions, platforms, and a place in history
If you do commit, the platform and version are worth a moment's thought. The PC has the liveliest community and the richest custom-server and mod ecosystem, with faster matchmaking and the most to do — it is the most complete way in, and the one the hardcore default to. The console versions arrived after repeated delays and ran unevenly early on, while the current-gen builds on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S bring clear gains in frame rate and fidelity, making them the ones console players should reach for. Whatever the platform, bring a good headset — in this game, sound is the most important gear you own.
As for its place in history, Insurgency: Sandstorm may never become a sales legend, but it proved a point: a small studio, through near-stubborn devotion to realism, really can carve its own narrow road through a genre crowded with giants and walk it into longevity. It does not pile on bulk and it does not pander, yet through its sheer immersion and its sound design it stands as one of the defining works of small-studio hardcore spirit. For the people it is built for, this is not just another shooter — it is the irreplaceable one.

Devs pretty much never listen to their player base contrary to their claims. Here's what you need to do NWI if you're listening: Quit making questionable decisions and instead of pretending like you didn't know you can check with your playerbase and actually listen. Stop deleting game modes and features and bring them all back (frenzy, skirmish, comp, hd textures...etc). Stop neutering the AI to appeal to the casuals and make PvE actually challenging like it's supposed to. Stop making cosmetics that don't fit the game and its setting. Prioritize fixing the abomination of bugs plaguing the game and focus on QoL improvement before you release another update that merely adds a couple redundant guns and a map. Do proper QA/QC testing before you roll out an update. Improve night maps, this whole too bright and too dark at the same time is annoying, that's why night maps are rarely voted, it's because we can't see anything. Wow so you actually did something to address this, but you managed to make it worse, ever heard of middle ground NWI? Do all of that and I'll change my review.Show moreShow less
It is alright. Not good but not bad. Decent enough in its current form to play a couple hours with friends but that is about it. I'm sure as more updates come out and more modes, maps and weapons are introduced, the game will improve. The graphics are very nice and the weapon sounds are on point. 7/10Show moreShow less
Edit: As of today 27/Sep/2025, the list of bugs that are either since the game was released 7 years ago or from when a game update was released: 1. Auto-balance changing a random dead player instead of the last player that joined the match. Frustrating when you contribute to a team and then get changed randomly, and sometimes, multiple times in a single match.(last part apparently fixed) 2. Jumping next to a player makes your character stop moving forward. Before it wasn't like this. 3. Bipods un-deploying if you turn to a side that has a 0.01° downward inclination. Before it wasn't like this. 4. Sometimes you can see through smokes if multiple are active. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3281678720 5. When you are in a lobby actively in a queue to enter a server if another player joins the lobby it stops searching. 6. Cosmetic loadout presets being messed up each time you exit the game.(Seems fixed now) ____________________________________________________________________ Old review: Death cam does not belong in this game. Now they start to add casual features into a game they advertised as a semi hardcore shooter to bring in more players who probably would not like this game in the first place, casual players who want a more relaxed game and don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with those players who want a relaxed game i have been there to, started playing Battlefield 2, COD then moved to BF3, BF4 but then i just wanted something more 'realistic', i then found Insurgency source on some random video on Youtube and i was like 'Why the hell haven't i found this game before?', played a ton of it, loved Ambush mode, a couple years later Sandstorm came along so i pre-ordered it(first and last pre-order in my life), i thought they would follow the same principles but apparently not. This game was supposed to be unique because there was really nothing like it out there. I'm not sure which other solutions they can implement to bring in more players($$$) but this definitely is the worst of them. I know it can be disabled in the settings but how in the hell is that fair for everyone? With features like this don't bother spending your money with this game as you can go buy Battlefield 4 and play on hardcore servers to get the same experience plus vehicles, most likely better performance, etc. I love this game but features like this kill the principle of hardcore shooter. Just watch this video people.Show moreShow less

This review exists as a form of blackmail. I have played Insurgency for almost 500 hours now, I love this game but recently they have made a change that is ruining a large portion of the fun. Matches in this game on PC have always supported 14v14 players, but recently they have added cross-play with consoles and are limiting matches to 10v10 because for some reason they don't trust consoles to handle the extra 8 players. You can disable cross-play, but they have made it the default. So now, only experienced players with the know-how to disable it do, thus leaving the servers with the normal lobby size (14v14) mostly empty. This is tragic, 8 less players throws off the pace of the game that I know and love. New World Interactive should just make it so consoles can play 14v14 matches. I highly suspect most of their user base is on PC, so if the last gen consoles take a performance hit, so be it. If this is fixed I will delete this review, or replace it with a positive one. God bless.Show moreShow less

Needs more time in the oven. I can tolerate doughiness but there are pockets of raw batter. Edit: In response to JBlum who asked if I still feel the same on 3/8/19: Yes, yes I do.Show moreShow less
