I hate having to give this game a thumbs down, but the seeming lack of a mid-mission save has already bit me a couple of times in the first three hours. Without being able to save within a mission means if real life calls me and I have to quit the game I lose all the work I put into that mission. I say "seeming" because I would be happy to learn if there is some mid-mission save and I just missed it, but until then, I can't recommend the game to others.Show moreShow less
I'm a Marine Veteran, specifically an 0844 Fire Direction Control man. This game is not too far off how actual calculations for artillery are done - really impressed and brings back memories of conducting fire missions. To the developers, excellent work - very satisfying for someone who's done this in a real world scenario (the coffee maker at the start menu is a brilliant detail - the FDC runs on coffee!)Show moreShow less
So here's the thing before I start. This is an *objectively GOOD game* for the community that seems rabid over this thing, based off comments I've made on other platforms. It is well-made, immersive, with an original mechanic. But it is NOT for everybody (including myself) and I think in the midst of the delerious hype over this game more reviews need to say that. STEAM reviews are not by the letter of the law "is it good?" It's literally "Do you recommend it?" For someone like me? No. The problem with "simulation genre" games is with too much 'simulation' you lose the fun. A PC *game* that is a "simulator" is different than a real life simulator. To me a "Simulator" is where you go to learn to fly airlines or fighter jets. That's work though. But that's what happens here for me when I experience this game. I enjoy the plotting shots and immersion but I have a few key issues with it: 1.) It is completely devoid of a tutorial. You get into Iron Nest and by reading clipboards and looking at vague pictures on the wall you are expected to figure it out. I wanted a game, jump immediately into the fun, not to wander 20 minutes figuring out what to do and personally, i BARELY got past this point. Honestly, the "Lets Plays" on the internet surprisingly gloss over the high barrier for these first few minutes. 2.) For a game that gives you your accuracy score at the end of each mission, there are missions where it compells you to miss a shot to get a shot recalibrated and then finally you can actually hit. So you do your best work, you'll still miss, at times in this game. The community goes "But Datz REAL Artilleryz Tactiz !!" ...Perhaps? Still not fun for me, especially when the game will show you your 'poor' accuracy due to those missed shots at the end of your mission. 3.) I just find the main mechanic tedious. It feels like 'work' not a 'game'. Now, this is completely subjective (as is my whole review) so I am not saying this mechanic is *objectively* tedious...It just is for gamers like myself and I know there are many more like me. Here is my best description of taking any single shot. If what you read sounds fun, get the game. If it sounds tedious, don't get it: -See on map a target -Identify target nature (infantry, cache, artillery, etc.) -Go buy a correct shell type for the target with requistion -Plot on the map range and bearing -Spin valve with your mouse on a computer to input range -Spin two valves, one very fussy, to detirmine precise bearing on a computer -Spin another small fussy valve to detirmine target type. -Pull lever to get firing solution -Go to a different computer to pull lever for "general" bearing -Spin seperate, fussy, valve for "precision" bearing -Go to gun. Pull lever to ram the shell into gun -Pull 1-4 levers to drop powder bags -Pull other lever to ram powder into gun -Go to another computer to use lever for "general" elevation (wait 5-10 seconds for elevation to actually occur) -Spin another valve to get "precise" elevation -Review firing solution at YET ANOTHER computer -Pull another lever to arm gun -Pull another lever to fire gun -Go to map and see if you hit -Rinse, wash, repeat If that sounds amazing and how you want to spend your weekend, go buy the game. But if you read that and it sounds tedious and like work, then don't buy it. As a game that is a product it is what it wants to be and, as I've already said, well-made, but this game is not the second coming and for a chunk of the gaming community they'd just want their fun back.Show moreShow less
I think I would have had straight A+ in math class in school if they just told me I was calculating a white phosphorus artillery trajectroy to take out rebels. Fun game. - No performance issue on a laptop. - Has a cat - You can customize the said cat - Elementary school level math requiredShow moreShow less
This game is great, good visuals, great sounds, gameplay is fun if the idea of operating a steampunk mobile dual artillery machine sounds like fun. The game takes place in a fictional Europe, and it is obvious that a lot of love went into making the game. The problem is, the game doesn't respect your time. Early missions are relatively short, but they get longer quick. You cannot save your game mid-mission--if you quit, you lose your progress on that mission. Picture yourself enjoying a complex mission, realize that it's getting late and you need to quit, but if you do you lose all your progress. How likely is it that you'll want to redo the mission from scratch? First time it happened to me, I rolled with it. Then it happened again. And again. I'm only a few missions in, and four hours played, and I'm just frustrated with it. Maybe someday they'll add this feature, and if they do I'll certainly change this review.Show moreShow less
Awesome game, only thing i believe its missing its to make it co-op, i cant stop wanting been able to yell commands to my friend xD, overall this game has me hooked and i know for sure that my wife isnt fond of it hahahaShow moreShow less
really boring and unsatisfying, just dragging arrows on a map and clicking levers over and over, waiting for gears to turn forever, all for a small crater to appear on the map not my thing. I found myself very quickly dreading the next target from the typewriter, just needing to draw some lines on the map to find intersect and then another line to target it, and then back to the ponderously slow loading and especially elevation process, all for a seemingly small payout/conclusion PROS: -great sounds -very cute cat, i was able to make him look just like mine and name him <3Show moreShow less
They have called the 'tism, the 'tism answered, and now they have one of the best 'tism communities ever assembled. The game is essentially an autism simulator in the best kind of way, press buttons and pull levers and turn wheels. And, blow stuff up in the process. One of the very few true gems in development in recent history, not to mention done by a single dev! GLORY TO CASTILE!Show moreShow less
A great concept that could have used more time in the oven. Bugs reported to the devs through their official forms and Discord reports during NextFest remain unfixed. For just one, the player can easily clip through walls, ceilings, the gun barrels, shells, etc. Triangulation, the whole point of the game, is pointless when random spotter locations mean the target can be directly between them, and all you know is your target is somewhere on a 5km line. The only fix is to reload the level and hope RNG is nicer to you. There's difficult, and then there's broken. Textures, particularly the red on levers and gold around gauges, are "flat," undetailed, and stand out like a sore thumb. Text and labels "hover" off of the objects they're supposed to be written on, like the map labels and the sponsor names on the gun barrels. When you move the turret across the map, the view outside the window stays stationary. Overall, the fantastic potential in the gameplay loop feels spoiled by releasing the game in an Alpha state with very little polish.Show moreShow less
