Sadly I cannot recommend this game just yet. This game has a massive identity crisis and with current content it's essentially an extended demo. First let me commend this game for what it does right: - combat is fun and satisfying, both when flying the ship and when on foot, there's issues with it like scarse ammo, harder difficulties throwing obscene amounts of enemies at you from buggy spawn points and heavy weapons being a waste of inventory slots (more on inventory slots in a second) but overall it's a pleasant experience with strong potential. - the current system of missions is quite varied with multiple random events, as you fly a lot of these missions it will need more than that but it's a good start - concept of ship being damaged and needing repairs while not new is quite fun and feels well executed - lore is good enough for a game of this type Now with the negatives: - The game struggles with identity regarding progression-based gameplay and rougelite approach. It asks you to sink in hours of gameplay for very little reward yet at the same time if you fail with your party - recovery will cost you dearly as weapons that you might have been collecting through 5-10 different missions simply disappear. Re-collecting them will take ages. Having both slow, incremental progression yet at the same time harsh punishments that can erase a whole day worth of progress feel like disrespect to player's time, especially since all missions depend only on the last stage, no matter how well you've done in prior stages. Pick one: either slow grindy progression with scaling difficulty and permanent progress, or fast non-permanent progression resetting every mission, with RNG based power upgrades that all disappear on failure. - Inventory slots are picked straight from Lethal Company-like extraction games, limited to 4 of whatever, however 1 slot is already permanent so essentially only 3 are left for the player. Given small amounts of ammunition and large amounts of enemies you usually end up taking 2 weapons extra leaving only one slot for any loot, making it really cumbersome and frustrating to play around. - There's currently very few quests in the game, they are also all very basic. - There’s an obvious opportunity for functional armor stats, but there's nothing there, it's just cosmetics. It feels like the devs intended to do more here but dropped it to push out Early Access. - Rewards from mission stages are so wildly inconsistent that difficulty levels barely matter. If you get the right artifacts, Hard missions become trivial. If you get nothing useful, even Easy becomes annoying without good guns. There’s a good game buried in here, and the core mechanics have real promise. But right now the progression, inventory system, and lack of meaningful content hold it back badly. I’ll keep an eye on development, but I can’t recommend it yet.Show moreShow less
This game is a Really Fun PVE the only issue i have is why do people want PVP? its PVE game NOT A PVP not every game needs PVP.....this is better off staying PVE its better to stay that way because it was its main Focus....... Plus i LOVE how they did the PVE its perfect Plus its better to play with a full crew of friends(or randoms if your bored) (and to the people saying wildgate is better? its not.....its just not yeah i may not have played it but ive only heard negetive stuff about it)Show moreShow less
After playing more, and reaching a new difficulty, it immediately becomes clear that the devs did not take certain feedback to heart. At least not what me and mine mentioned. There is no sustainability, and that drains the fun. Revives aren't free, which quickly becomes an issue as difficulty increases. The issue is that you'll take down five waves of enemy ships, 10 elites, and 2 corvettes...and get no supplies. The gameplay is not sustainable. It goes from fun to simply frustrating as enemies infinitely spawn until you die, and there's nothing you can do. The loop is: Ship catches on fire, your radiation leaks, it takes 1 person to pilot and one to fix. The other person MUST be on objective, but it takes two people to activate it, making it literally impossible to progress without dying. This was all pointed out in a post I left detailing it, and the developers responded without mentioning things they liked or didn't. They simply said they were happy with their progress. This does not bode well. I'd rather just be told they agree or didn't. This allows a dialogue with players, not just "We hope you like it!" without anything more. It's not helpful, it's not engaging. Just like the artificial difficulty in this. Just like how it is now almost impossible to grapple to any ships. The option doesn't appear even if you're right in front of it. Fun new bug. This game almost nails it. I played the early demo version when it launched with my stack of friends, and we all felt the same way about it. Incredibly fun, but in need of some work. It's a real shame the devs didn't listen. There is a lot I want to say and add, but I have only so much text allowance for these reviews. I'll share what I can. What I need to point out, above all else, is that this game gives something nothing else quite manages. Seeing your ship, being on the deck during combat, and having the ability to walk out and onto the hull in the heat of battle, is just the coolest f**king thing ever. It creates gorgeous moments that leave you yearning for another run with your friends. A pilot weaving through debris while your friend guns down an enemy gunship the moment you step out to repair a materia leak is breathtaking. The way you can see everything happening around you gives that perfect sense of scale. You feel small on your ship, but far from insignificant. It's a feeling that no other game has given me, especially not with friends. Especially when you repair your ship enough to go boarding another vessel, take it down, then grapple right back home in time to fight another fire. The good: Gameplay loop. With friends, this game's gameplay loop is incredibly fun. The ship itself gives access to a lot of silly things you can just mess around with to have fun. The emotes paired with chairs are a natural fit for friends wanting to just goof around. When you're not doing that, the mechanics of the combat are heady. The pilot is always a necessity, and I can't really imagine this game as a solo. Where this game truly shines is once you have more crew, allowing for the other mechanics to truly shine. Gunning from within the ship is pretty nice, if not entirely unique. It gets more engaging once you get mounted weapons, like railguns, to let you unleash some real devastation on your enemies. The real chaos begins when you take basically any ship damage, because things go wrong fast. Fires start up, radiation leaks, your ship's lifeblood (materia) can leak, and you need to do rapid repairs. The moment this happens, the casual combat gets frantic. But it's a good frantic, because it greatly rewards fast responses from your crew. I didn't expect to be the one running around putting out fires, shooting from the gunner seat, and managing ship health, but here I am. It's appealing and necessary. But the other half of space combat is just as alluring, and I absolutely cannot get enough of it. This game gives you a grapple hook. A grapple hook with simply absurd range. If it were any shorter, it would harm the game drastically. Any longer and I probably wouldn't stop using it. This game lets you board enemy ships to take them down, and take them down fast. Bigger ships take longer, and even BIGGER ships yield some real loot. It's an incredibly fun, fast paced mechanic that adds a whole new level to the already enjoyable space fights. There is simply no other game I've seen that lets you jump out of your ship to take down a corvette you can't shoot because your railguns are down. It is exhilarating. The bad: Developers are questionably listening to feedback. This game has improved a lot, but also lost some things along the way. The game runs WAY worse than the demo. My 4090, even with DLSS on, is struggling to get 90 frames around enemies. My friend with a lesser card is often hitting 12fps. I'm not sure what happened, because the demo ran smooth. This is a huge issue that I hope gets addressed sooner rather than alter. Items not held are lost inbetween runs, automatically sold for salvage...even if you put them on a shelf. I don't like that items labeled as "Decorative" are deleted after runs, as they hold no salvage value. They're worth a little materia, but given their very titular nature, I expected them to remain as just that. Decorations you could keep. Shelves, in general, are a flawed system that could make for an amazing feature. They seem intended for you to prep exits with weapons and gear. I love that so much. The idea of having your ship- YOUR ship- stocked with items of your choosing and ready to use in the heat of battle is amazing. You memorize it so that you're prepped when things go bad. But that's not possible. Even items on shelves are deleted. Sold for scrap. Even if those items lose their value, let me hoard. Let me shove my ship so full of things that it bursts. I'm losing out on the value, so it's not exactly like I'm reaping the rewards anyways. I'd be plenty happy to see them have no value if kept like that, ensuring you don't stockpile for a big payout. I just want the ship to be MY ship. Also, there's a glitch where shelf items get stuck. Very bad glitch. Spiderbots still suck. They made quite literally no sound in the beta, meaning little flamethrowers would just sneak up on you and burn you to death. They...kind of make sound now? They make a sound on spawn, but it doesn't follow their body, leaving them still soundless until killed. Even their attack is soundless. My entire group confirmed this, so it's not just me. Your ship's name not appearing on the side simply will not do. It's the final touch lacking from making the vessel truly yours. I really hope that, eventually, we see that changed. Large space debris, like exploded vessels, have terrible hitboxes. The first time I got truly frustrated with the game was during a very high stakes mission in which I died because I couldn't fly through a hole large enough for my entire ship. Except, I wasn't in my ship. It was just me, the very small person utterly dwarfed by this hole. Hitboxes like this will outright kill you, and that's some simply bad design in a game where half your time is spent flying around as a very vulnerable human. Your flashlights suck. The areas you need to use it don't actually get naturally darker, but simply drop all lighting...so your flashlight also does nothing. It also just sucks in general, making it doubly lame. Using your jetpack shuts it off as well, so you have to flick it on and off a lot. Mission diversity in the first zone is very lacking. Either we got really unlucky with spawns, or there are only three mission types, one of which is nearly identical to another. Complaints about diversity are well warranted, at least for zone one. I'm hoping other zones branch out, because if not, that's a huge problem. Overall: I want to love this game. But I hate that the devs are being cheeky about feedback, and that its difficulty is artificial.Show moreShow less
EDIT - For those questioning why I'm playing with controller on a pc, I'm playing on a Lenovo Legion Go. Hopefully that helps. I played an... Lets call it excessive amount of the demo a while back. I've been waiting for it to FINALLY drop. I jumped in long enough to check and make sure it's still as amazing as I remember it and yes, yes it is. My one criticism so far is that when playing on controller, the x/y axis on the left stick is either 100% or 0% (as in you cannot walk or gradually increase movement). Not a deal breaker and I'm sure I've missed something but I just wanted to note it for anyone who was curious/if the devs were listening. Everything else worked so well I made sure to gift a second copy to my partner so I can make them play with me finally!Show moreShow less
Game looks good and plays great. However it relies on a constant internet connection to the EGS servers, so if they are offline which they have been a lot lately then you can't even play on LAN or single player. Stop killing games already. To make things even worse saves are not being stored anywhere, even though this has steam cloud enabled. All your data will be lost as soon as you exit the game.Show moreShow less
Its good, there are a couple of similar games but this one is the best as its smooth, responsive and doesn't feel at all janky. My only criticism is that the ship controls horribly. In that its massively arcade style requiring absolutely no effort beyond point and click. The ship lacks any weight, resistance, momentum or 'feeling' of being there.Show moreShow less
This was one of those games I was super excited about. I checked on its progress almost every day leading up to the launch. My friends told me to grab it first and let them know if it was worth our time and honestly I have to say no. Pros: + Ship-to-foot combat is incredibly smooth. Moving around on the ship while it’s flying feels great + I had no performance issues. It runs really well + There’s some basic customization and I hope they add more options later + Managing the ship is fun with features like combat stations, repairs, a cool power grid system and shield repairs + You can craft items on board for materia + The guns feel satisfying to shoot + The grappling hook is awesome + You can board other ships but only from the outside + I love that it’s PVE with no PVP at all + It’s a roguelike which is cool + I really like that it’s also designed for solo play. I’ve heard it gets tough later on but I haven’t hit any missions yet that I couldn’t do solo + P2P servers mean you can still play even if the community shrinks Cons: - It’s a roguelike but it suffers from the most criticized aspect of the genre: replayability. It gets repetitive really fast. Every mission feels the same no matter what you do. There are a few mission types but they all boil down to the same elements. For example a vault mission always plays out the same way with each scripted "surprise" event. It gets boring quickly. - The enemies are way too generic and uninteresting to fight. Whether on foot or in ship combat they lack variety. The game tries to introduce different types like suicide drones and small AOE bots but they all feel the same. - The loot isn’t rewarding enough. After fighting for 20 minutes getting just three ship repair kits feels underwhelming especially if you didn’t need them in the first place. You often have to repair your ship after almost every mission making the whole thing feel pointless. Even finishing a full run feels like an empty accomplishment. You earn some credits that don’t have any real use which is frustrating. The rewards for missions seem like an afterthought with future purchases being limited to items like ship repair kits. - The weapons are lacking. There are a few options but most of them are pretty useless except for one that deals more damage. I don’t like when games offer a selection but make 90 percent of it obsolete. - You’re forced to take the starting weapon with unlimited ammo which doesn’t make sense especially when playing solo with a bot companion. Your inventory is already too small and losing another slot makes it impossible to carry all the cargo from a vault mission when you also take a better weapon with you. - The prologue which is basically the tutorial didn’t prepare me for the actual game. When I first got an artifact I was completely lost on what to do with it. I later learned that your ship gets repaired through additional missions unlocking a new room for artifact use but how was I supposed to know that. - Every artifact which are basically ship perks felt useless to me. For example gaining 50 percent more melee damage while holding a slice of pizza is not helpful. Not only have I never ordered pizza on my ship but melee combat is never necessary. Why would I waste one of my four inventory slots on a pizza? This is even more confusing given that they announced melee weapons in the next update. Receiving these trivial artifacts felt like a slap in the face after a tough mission. - It’s way too grindy. I hope this is just to stretch out the early access playtime until new updates arrive because you need to do a lot of bland repetitive runs to achieve anything. I’m too tired of the game to even think about grinding for another map tile. - The ship doesn’t behave like it’s in space. You have two boosts but the ship only speeds up during the boost and immediately slows down afterward. That’s not how space works making ship-to-ship combat feel off. Maneuvering is limited. You just have to position yourself behind the enemy which makes avoiding hits feel pointless and combat in space gets repetetive. There is no strategy to it. - I thought it was cool that you can board other ships only to find out you can just walk on their outside. Enemies spawn and you shoot them....that’s it. It is also crazy that the game encourages you more to fly freely in your spacesuit outside the ship to combat other enemy ships. I have to say of all the games in this genre this is one of the better ones. It breaks my heart not to recommend it but I can’t because the most important aspect - interesting replayability - is missing. I got tired of this game way too quickly. A roguelike should offer more than just three mission types played in random order. It needs variety within those mission types. This game is a diamond in the rough that could be really good down the line, but right now it feels like a moon rock. It’s a rare find, but ultimately just a rock.Show moreShow less
The game is amazing. The space combat is fun, the guns are responsive, everything works as it should. It feels like someone took Warframe's Railjack missions and heavily refined it into its own thing. The amount of potential on display here is huge. While I do highly recommend it, it is important to stress that it's literally just entering early access. Because it is so early into early access, the variety between enemy types, missions, mission maps, etc is going to be limited. If you don't like that, wait until it gets a few more patches under its belt.Show moreShow less
Really interesting idea, but it gets repetitive surprisingly quickly. Every mission felt the same, things felt hollow and Ai generated somehow, just a bit soulless overall. Refunded it, but I'll keep an eye on it. They need to add actual voice actors, I'm sick and tired of Ai this and Ai that in games now. "It's fine it's just a placeholder!" Ok that's fine, my refund is now also a placeholder, i will replace it with a real purchase when you replace Ai with the real thing.Show moreShow less
