This is a very confusing game to me. Not because I think it's bad, but because of how everyone seems to be ignoring all of the game's flaws and turning them into positives. I didn't go into it with particularly massive expectations, but I was still left extremely disappointed. Funnily enough this is actually the first game where my review hit the character limit and I had to revise parts of it. The first and largest reason why I feel this way is the level design. And honestly, the level design in this game is so extremely flawed in so many obvious ways that I don't really even know where to start. Suppose a decent way to start that off is to say that I think a lot of the levels in the game are very lackluster and uninspired. First of all, most levels in this game are very very bad at conveying the music's energy. Not into aestethics, necessarily, but into gameplay. The screen can be doing a bunch of wild stuff to go along with the song, but if the level then only requires you to move slightly out of the way of a random object every ten seconds, the level ends up boring no matter how energetic the level appears to be. Also a lot of levels just don't really do much to separate themselves from others, in some cases seeming like almost the exact same level, like Chronos and Logic Gatekeeper. In other cases the level will have an unique idea, but then be ruined by the fact another level takes that idea and does more with it. This is the case for Dubwoofer Substep and Lycantropy. Sometimes the level will be unique and have a clever idea, but then just be so poorly executed that the level remains boring to play. Spectra has this problem, the idea is that you're in a grid of hexagons and have to dash from one to another, but the level plays extremely slowly and is very easy to actually beat. That level is such a big waste of potential in my opinion. What should've been an unique and memorable level in this video game, Just Shapes & Beats, is essentially turned into "you ever heard of this other video game called super hexagon?" A lot of the levels in the game have the similar problem of being extremely sweet-spottable. Essentially what I mean by this is that you can sit in one spot for a large portion of the level and manage to dodge every obstacle. In a lot of cases, this is the result of the level design being just plain badly thought-out, like in Cascade, where a lot of the patterns are literally just dodged by standing still, and a lot of other levels where sitting in one of the corners of the screen will leave you very unlikely to be hit at all. And in other cases because the level design is somehow broken in a way that lets you do it. There's a lot of examples of that one, too. In Milky Ways, there's a grid of large squares that randomly pop up and you have to dodge them. Except that grid isn't correctly aligned and none of them will show up on the bottom of the screen. In The Lunar Whale, the hitboxes on the top wall are for some reason way too small for the object, allowing you to literally sit inside the object and dodge all of the obstacles by sitting still there. There's many more examples I can give of this. You might say "this isn't a big deal, just don't cheese the levels and it's not a problem." Already expecting a reaction like this, I want to say that this isn't true. Part of it is that everyone knows about these cheeses because the game is so terrible at hiding them. Whenever you play online, you will absolutely see people doing this in most of the levels where it's possible. As well as the game will reward you for playing well more, which is just plain easier if you use these flaws in the level to your advantage. It's almost natural for you to want to do this as soon as you know about it existing, and even if you don't, the other people doing it will probably still sour the experience for you. You might be wondering at this point why I bothered to play the game for 36 hours if I feel about it like this. This brings me to the part that inevitably made me dislike this game the most: the challenges, and the achievement for getting 25K Beat Points. The way you get beat points is by playing challenges. This is a series of three random levels in the game, two normal levels, where you are given the choice of playing one of three levels, and then one random bossfight (which is essentially just another normal level.) If you played story mode before challenge mode, you'll already have played all of them, with the exception of 10 unlockable levels (unlockable isn't necessarily correct, since you can get them all in challenge mode randomly before even unlocking them, this is a system that doesn't make sense.) Every time you beat a level in a challenge, you get Beat Points for it. How well you did and other arbitrary achievements will add up and give you like 20 to 40 beat points. When you beat the bossfight of a challenge, you get an extra 30 beat points. There isn't a way to speed this up. Playing perfectly will only make this process slightly faster. Let's do some maths: assuming you get an average of 30 beat points per level and 30 more for beating the boss, that's 120 beat points for beating a challenge. This means you need to beat 209 challenges, or 418 regular levels and 209 randomly-chosen bosses. Have I mentioned how many different levels there are in the game? There's 28 normal levels, and 7 bosses, except one of the bosses isn't in the challenge rotation. This means you'll have to replay every normal level an average of 15 times, and every boss almost 35 times. This is a problem. This is not reasonable. I see people praising this system for giving the game replayability, but a system forcing you to play more without giving you more substance to play doesn't make a game more replayable. I didn't have fun while grinding beat points, and I even got to the point where I gave up on listening to the game's music and just muted the game while mindlessly grinding the same levels. What I've mentioned up to this point are what completely ruin the game for me. Even if it didn't have other problems, I'd still have hated it as a result. That said, the game still has other problems. The music choice is extremely one-note and lacking in variety. I get that people like the music in the game, but I think the game needed to take more risks with music choice to be interesting. The pink-red color gimmick is fine at first, but I got sick of the color extremely fast. I imagine everyone who plays the game for over 10 hours will eventually feel like this. The game has its fair share of bugs and inconsistencies, like some levels often times playing differently for no reason, objects not aligning correctly and sometimes just straight up objects showing up that aren't even supposed to show up. In some cases, objects can even go completely invisible, making the level completely unplayable. The lives and ranking system is weird and pointless. You can get a B-rank for dying and not getting revived, but getting revived at all during a level automatically gives you a C-rank. Honestly, there's so many more problems I can mention, but everyone else reviewing the game seems to not realize, or just willfully ignore them. I don't understand how this is overwhelmingly positive right now. I want the game to be better though, I want it to be good. If the developer is open to it, I can give a much more detailed list about the levels and why they're not well-designed. If at least the levels are made better, I would be so much less negative. And also please get rid of Grindcore. No one needs an achievement like this. In the end, Just Shapes & Beats is subpar and disappointing in more ways than I can think of.Show moreShow less

If I were to summarize this game in 1 word, it would be "disappointing." It's definitely not what I'd call a bad game, but by the time I finished playing it, all I can really say is that it felt painfully mediocre for a game that is listed as overwhelmingly positive. Pros: 💙Amazing Concept, from only a minimal amount of gameplay, I immediately wanted to see more 💙Cute, simplistic story mode 💙Strong Soundtrack 💙PASSION. I can tell this was a very important game to the Devs and it OOZES with the feeling of being someone's true passion project Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to like this game it just has too many flaws... Cons: 💔Poor Choreography Songs that are done well are extremely fun, but at least 1 in 4 songs felt unfair to an upsetting degree. This is especially prevalent in boss battles which require you to play through an entire song without any checkpoints. The screen will show warnings for some obvious attacks but give LITERALLY NO WARNING for when bosses suddenly SPROUT NEW LIMBS & FLAILS THEM ABOUT 💔Very Limited Story What is here is really cute (even if it falls victims to a lot of obvious tropes). Despite this, it feels like the game is trying to force too much emotion into its short duration, and the soundtrack is ALMOST able to squeeze that emotion out.... Almost, but that 2.6 hours of playtime on this review is all this game really has to offer for most people because... 💔>33% of this game is "extra" 15 playable songs are hidden behind challenges for seemingly no reason. So despite the fact that the playable, programmed soundtrack is 40 songs long, you only really get to experience 25 of them even after completing story mode. 💔Some Songs aren't even playable Multiple songs are only used to add atmosphere to the story and are not even mapped out. Most of these didn't need any special attention, but still could've been a creative maps. By far the worst offender and what I genuinely might lose sleep over is how the story mode conditioned me to be excited for when I finally unlocked Nanobii's Rainbow Road. This song is used at ever major point of progress you get to story-wise and is by far the most euphoric piece in the entire game. This is why part of me died when I learned that the song isn't even unlocked through challenges. 💔Little variety despite Quantity I can't say I particularly disliked any one song in this soundtrack, but despite the large diversity this game has in artists, Nearly all songs are either Chiptune, dubstep, or some other very obvious electric-based genre, and while I get that it's done to match the game's aesthetic, I can't help but wonder what could've been. what if the devs took some risks with songs that *aren't* focused around "beeps and boops" and just branched out even just into other sub-genres of EDM. ⛔Is "Just Shapes and Beats" a bad game? Absolutely not, it just leaves so much more to be desired. It's such a great concept that would be an instant 10 if not for only a few poor decisions made along the way. I care about this game, and that's precisely why I just spent at least half of the playtime this game gave me on this review. ⚠ Edit: This review was posted on an older version of the game. I have yet to see any of the new tracks and whether or not any of these issues have been addressed since I last played it 4 years agoShow moreShow less
If Level Editor is published in Just Shapes & Beats, This Game would be "The Popular Music Game" We all like LEVEL EDITOR right?Show moreShow less
Good game, unfun dev team. Gatekeeps a level editor from most of the community and gives access to only big content creators, then cancels it without a word and threaten the dev behind an unofficial level editor to take legal actions if it ever goes public just shows the real face behind Berzerk Studios. Also if you dare to say anything about the hardmode levels mostly consisting of pellet spam, or give the slightest critique to any level design, you WILL get a negative response from one of the devs. Shame, cause the concept of the game is great... but I guess "Never meet your heroes" has some truth to it.Show moreShow less

sadly im giving a negative review, and its not because the game is bad, but because the price is insane. you get up to 3 hours of gameplay in story mode. and story mode=like all of the levels - so if you like paying 5-10$more than you should this game is for youShow moreShow less

TL;DR: I really wish this game was better. The level design leaves too much to be desired. An editor would save it, but as it stands I just can't recommend it. This is a bullet hell rhythm game which is a FANTASTIC concept but it only delivers halfway on either side. The biggest issue is that most of the levels just are not that well designed. There's easy ways to cheese them so that you barely have to play. You may argue "Oh, but you don't HAVE to cheese them, you can just choose to play them normally" and you're right, but the ranking system, ostensibly to increase replay value, just encourages finding somewhere to sit and hide for the whole song. Particularly egregious examples include Cascade, where nothing in the final pattern ever hits the corners, and Paper Dolls, where the entire back half of the level spawns with a convenient gap in the far right of the screen. Did they not playtest these levels? Or did they not care enough to fix them? Now that the major complaint is out of the way, let's get into the minor complaints. The soundtrack is very samey. It's all EDM and chiptune, but most of it isn't even INTERESTING EDM or chiptune. I love EDM and chiptune, so I was really disappointed that many of the songs were fairly generic. There are exceptions, of course -- Wicked, Try This, and Sevcon spring to mind -- but they are in the minority. Samey, generic levels follow from samey, generic songs. Just as many of the songs sound much the same, most levels borrow or reuse elements from other levels. The boss battle Lycanthropy, frustratingly, lifts a whole section from the regular level Dubwoofer Substep. On that subject, when you play online, you play two regular levels and then one boss level. There are, unfortunately, not nearly enough boss battles to sustain this. You will play them over and over and get very bored of them, especially once you get better at the game. The story mode has... pseudo-platforming sections? For some reason? They're not HORRIBLE to play, but they're also just not what I launched the game for. A level editor would make this game worth it, in my opinion. But it would only be because fans with talent, effort, and good taste in music would make levels that are much, much better than the main game. I hate to say it, but don't buy Just Shapes & Beats.Show moreShow less
