Started strong but got bored and can't bring myself to finish. I was playing through on Master Spirit difficulty (EDIT: it was Expert, not Master, as Master is unlocked after game completion), which offers a good challenge for veteran players. I'd give it a neutral rating is Steam allowed. 6.5/10 Pros: - The game looks and plays wonderfully, very polished. Art is fantastic - Cute characters and lots of aesthetic customization for the cute little dudes - Combat is kinda good but a bit basic, which is fine. Cons: - Gameplay loop is very boring, very "AAA" in the way you have to do a ton of meaningless "puzzles" like "move this box over here to this double height wall so you can climb on it" and "shimmy across rocks with conveniently painted ledges" kinda stuff. Very Uncharted, Tomb Raider, God of War-esque. I personally hate that kind of slow, boring gameplay which uses lots of tedium to extend gameplay but pretends its a "puzzle" to justify it's existence. If you don't mind that stuff, then I'd generally recommend the game even considering the other cons, as this was the big one for me. - Hardly any change of scenery. Basically a forest the whole time, and considering how linear the game is with all it's invisible walls, it gets boring to look at. Could've used varied biomes to keep it fresh. - Most exploration is pointless since 80% of what you find is just currency for cosmetics. Way too much focus on the hats for your little dudes, which left me feeling bored in-between upgrades. Should have fine-tuned the drip-feed of upgrades and findings to make exploration feel more meaningful. By 2/3 through the game, I have seen everything the game has to offer. Enter a combat arena, fight baddies, then solve environmental "puzzles" like pushing blocks around and shooting three crystals in a row to move to the next combat arena. Presentation is great but game has bored me. Granted, many don't mind this kind of gameplay and if you don't mind, you're sure to find an enjoyable game.Show moreShow less

Okay, let me first say, I absolutely love the game. The reason for the no on the recommendation - Do NOT buy it at full price. Here's my gripe: This game is absolutely beautiful. It's cute and angst builds with perfection. The characters are cute, the story has got some elements I absolutely love (YOU MEDITATE!?), and the mechanics, it's all around pretty fun in combat. But.. The entire time you are 'freely' exploring or finding your way, it feels like something is missing. There are these pretty large areas of the map that look pretty dope when you first arrive, but quickly, with nothing to do, they lose their luster. There are some really wonky issues with mechanics sometimes, some animations just seemed lazy (they really didn't put ANY effort into what it's like for Kena in the water. Sad Face). The game was fun, enough. But at 39.99, I just don't think that's there. I hope that it one day, will be. I'll update in the future.Show moreShow less

I wish there was sideways thumb button, because this game really deserves that. The art and music in this game really carry it, and needless to say the game is gorgeous. But everything else is just...alright. The story is very slim, but I was alright with that provided that the game itself was good. Well, the game is passable, but really doesn't provide much. There's not a lot of depth to the mechanics, level designs, or monster encounters. There's also a lot of questionable design decisions that serve to just waste your time and could've been streamlined greatly. Some examples of this would be the collection of Rots, the little creatures you collect. Every single time you collect a new one, an identical cutscene is played where you watch the little dude come out, wave at you, and smile. The cutscene is short enough, only lasting upwards of 10 seconds, but when you're having to collect dozens of these guys in any given area it starts to become a burden that just disrupts the gameplay. Ontop of that, each collection of a new Rot doesn't really give you anything new, so having a cutscene play each time just feels unnecessary when you aren't really getting much out of it, and have to collect 30+ before it gives you something worthwhile. Think Legend of Zelda when you open up treasure chests and the time it takes for that cutscene to play, but now imagine that each treasure chest you open up is just a single green rupee; it would get pretty tiring after awhile. Another example would be one of the central mechanics in the game where you find these tear-drop like plants that turn your rots into these blobs that you move around to destroy corrupted areas in the game. The blobs move ridiculously slow, and each time you clear a section of corruption it brings down the total time left you have to use the blob. When you have to go back-and-forth between the plant moving this blob slowly several times to clear the whole area, it starts to feel more like a chore rather than a cool mechanic you are having fun with. The combat is super barebones, but I guess it's passable enough. Don't go in here expecting a lot of depth in this combat. You basically got attack with stick, attack with bow (that is also the stick), dodge, and block/parry. That's the core of what you are working with for most of the game. You get some additional gimmicky stuff ontop of this, but it doesn't serve to change the core combat at all. Again, this game is alright, but it's nothing special. You are basically playing this game to go "ooooo, that's pretty" and that's about it.Show moreShow less

Reading the reviews, I really expected a beautiful, story-driven game with lots of exploration potential and smooth combat. Much of that is true. But not the combat. I'm not sure if others are just hypnotized with the game's beauty and story, or if there is another reason, but those saying combat is smooth are not being truthful in their review. We all have our own opinions, but I am confused by the comments praising the smoothness and responsiveness. It is really clunky. - When you look into how to parry correctly, you will find that many consider the parry to be broken, and to not use it. - Attacks and the timing of it registering is off. Things do not register as it would appear via animation. - You can change button mapping, but the defaults are very confusing/not intuitive, so it makes it difficult to learn at first. - Boss fights are NOT fun. At all. It becomes a game of you running in circles and shooting out an arrow every minute and a half because parrying doesn't work and some attacks are unavoidable if you are in range. Unrelated - the camera angle/control of the Rot when turning it into their 'true form' is the most nauseating thing ever. It is disheartening - I am already captivated by the story and exploration. But I have found myself switching difficulty down to story-mode all too often. The combat is just unbearable and not fun, which is disappointing for a game that could be easily in many people's top 5 games. ~~ Edit: I feel it would be only fair to update my review after finishing the game. I debated if I would change my mind on whether I would recommend the game or not, but overall I would stick with my original rating. There are many things that improved as you progressed, including combat due to the higher health pool and more abilities that you are granted. But I don't think that my original issues with the game disappeared. If you are someone who loves a beautiful, deeply emotional, story-driven game, you will love it. Keep difficulty on Story Mode and it will be incredibly enjoyable. It was just disappointing that the combat did not feel fully fleshed-out and that finding the secrets around the world felt less than rewarding. I love how the game encourages exploration - they do a lot of that right. But getting some hats and currency to buy the bulk of the reward system just became lackluster. While I loved the story and the concept of it, it could be a bit empty or disjointed sometimes. I was just expecting something a bit more - but I understand that's not every subjective. In the end - lots of amazing things about this game. There really is! But I think this series could benefit from a sequel where they improve on some of these features that have the potential to be incredible. There is no denying that this game has a LOT of heart put into it.Show moreShow less

I am so sad to give this game the thumbs down. It started out so strong. The visuals are STUNNINGLY beautiful. There is so much imagination in the world. I loved exploring the world, seeking out treasures, commanding the rot to solve little korok type puzzles, uncovering secrets. The thing that really ruined it for me was the combat. Even if you put it on the lowest difficulty setting, it's still intensely difficult. Dark Souls is not at all what I was wanting out of this game. I tried pressing on for a while and was making progress, but I was having fun when I was adventuring through the beautiful world and not swearing at bosses that can kill you in two hits. And it's not even JUST the difficulty. The game is full of other things that are just huge pet peeves of mine. For one thing, the way the game handles "dodging", which I embed firmly in quotations. To me, dodging means something like you'd see in an og God of War, where pressing the dodge button means you lunge or leap or slide or roll AWAY from the enemy so that your physical body is no longer in range of the enemy's weapon or claws or whatever. But there is another school of thought, such as in games like Fenyx Rising or Kena apparently, where pressing dodge simply causes you to roll in a circle AROUND the enemy instead of away from them, or even do a silly little sonic spin of a roll right in the enemy's legs, because the idea is that you as the player are conscious of the idea of i-frames and are counting on using them. So you're not actually dodging as much as you are becoming temporarily unhittable for one half of one second because i-frames. What this tends to mean in practice is that you "dodge" INTO enemy attacks, which is incredibly annoying. It goes without saying, but I'm not a fan. Then there are the camera problems. You can technically lock on to enemies in this game, which sometimes helps in one-on-one encounters, but you're almost never in those. A lot of the time you're getting attacked by mobs that can number anywhere between 3 to like 20. Some are charging you with melee, some are sniping you with ranged, some of them are on the ground, some of them are flying. You're getting it from all angles at all times. This creates a challenging combat situation sure, but it also creates a situation where there is nothing you can do with the camera that will give you an understanding of what is happening in this fight. Then there are the bosses. You pretty much can't use dodging for the bosses for reasons mentioned above, and bosses use all manner of leaping, charging, spinning, and sweeping attacks. What the game wants you to do is parry and counter like you're playing Bloodborne or something, but some of these bosses have attacks that aren't even really telegraphed, the parry mechanic is super unreliable, and the bosses can kill you in like two hits, even on the lowest difficulty, so you just die over and over until you can memorize the boss's behaviors and move set, which is SOME people's idea of fun, but it's not mine. And the worst offender really is that this game is basically just a gauntlet of timed challenges. For a game that is so beautiful and bursting with imagination in the visuals and worldbuilding, it's an absolute shame and a tragedy that whoever was in charge of gameplay design didn't have more imagination than to just have you do timed combat challenges again and again and again. Want to unlock more outfits? Timed combat challenge. You found a secret room with a secret chest? Can't open it unless you complete a timed combat challenge. All that money you're collecting from exploring? It sure would be nice to spend it on something, but new items in the store only unlock after completing a timed combat challenge. Just tragically, woefully unimaginative in that department, which is a shame since the imagination everywhere else is so outstanding. Timed combat challenges are one of my biggest pet peeves. I pretty much consider timed challenges (timed combat challenges especially) the lowest most uninspired form of game design, so make of my complaining what you will. And while it didn't really make me mad, I was pretty disappointed to find all those secrets, solve those puzzles, open those chests, and be rewarded with cash monies ("karma") until I had accumulated somewhere in the ballpark of 10,000 with nothing to spend it on. It was at this point I realized that there is literally nothing to spend the money on except hats for your rots. That's it. Just hats. The money does nothing. There's no point even collecting it. I'm so sad. I was having an amazing time in a magical BOTW type world and then out of nowhere the game pulls the rug out and suddenly wants me to think about i-frames. I'm so sick of Dark Souls and Bloodborne!!! I'M OVER IT. LET'S MOVE ON. It's like being served the most delicious cake ever baked, but unfortunately somebody farted on it.Show moreShow less
