Be sure to give the demo a go to see if the gameplay clicks with you before buying. As others have already said, the game is like Trials+Guns+Mad Max esque story. I don't necessarily think the game is bad, I mean I bought it cause it looked fun and there are moments where I was having fun shooting birds and doing flips. It just kind of surprised me with a lot of other things I wasn't expecting and personally found too annoying to continue and finish. First, the world is like a big metroid style map and has quests. Kinda threw me off a bit cause I thought the game would lend itself well to a level based format. I really wasn't expecting to have to do so much back and forth between place to place and it gets tiring very quickly. In other metroidvanias this isn't a huge deal, but in Laika you're doing this on a Trials bike and starts to get annoying very quickly when you bump your head and die when all you're trying to do is drive back to a place you just were. The game offers fast travel but is very quickly undercut by the fact that it's use is tied to a resource. You have to collect wax and craft candles to be able to fast travel and I have no clue why. While playing I saved up some money and wanted to fast travel home to purchase an upgrade only to learn I had 0 candles. I had 30 pieces of wax but because I didn't realize the only place you can make more candles is at home base I was outta luck. I was annoyed and mainly just wondering why a basic game mechanic has to be tied to a resource to begin with. The wax isn't exactly rare, so it just feels like adding an unnecessary step to basic game mechanic. Then there's money and resources. The game uses a similar mechanic to that of Hollow Knight where when you die you lose a portion of your saved up money. If you can get back to the spot where you died you can pick it up again and there will be no loss. Otherwise if you die too much you'll just lose it for good. A mechanic that I think works fine for other games, but that's because there's a margin for error. If I died in Hollow Knight I can try and get back to that spot and have health as a buffer to help me get there through enemies and obstacles. As long as I don't make too many mistakes I can get back. Laika doesn't have health. Bullets, explosions, head hits the ground, those all result in instant death. There's no buffer, you make one mistake and that's it, so if you die in an awkward spot around enemies or difficult terrain you kinda just have to accept you're gonna lose your money. Again, I don't really think the game is bad, it just has some really odd design choices here and there. And at least for me, the annoyances of those choices simply reached a point where I felt the frustration outweighed the fun.Show moreShow less

MAN i wish i liked this game. the times where you're doing backflips and ♥♥♥♥ to take out groups of enemies with surgical precision while avoiding getting hit are so damn fun and addictive... but the game would rather make you drive around mostly empty open areas and backtrack to places you've already been to do side quests. the game is also horrible at telling you where to go at some points, the worst part is when you have to do an unmarked sidequest in order to get to a main area and there's absolutely no indication that that's what you're meant to do. if the game was structured like a standard level-based game and leaned into the sheer fun of the motorcycle combat it would be perfect. a metroidvania just doesn't really fit with this kind of gameplay.Show moreShow less
I feel pretty mixed about this game, I LOVE the art, the music, the characters, (some of) the gameplay, but man some parts of this game are ROUGH. I think its a well made game for the most part, its stable, it runs well and has some really fun and unique ideas, but while it has very high highs, it also has some truly low lows. some of the decisions made for the actual gameplay are very questionable and/or frustrating. Like half of this game is a glorified fetch quest, someone asks you to go get something, you go out of your way to get it, you come back and get a crumb of engaging dialogue with an absolutely pitiful amount of rewards, and then they immediately ask for something else. repeat for almost every single side quest. The worst part is that when your initially exploring a new area quest items wont even spawn until an NPC asks for them, so you gotta drag your bike all across the dessert over again for every single quest. It can be incredibly monotonous, again for rewards that are almost always near worthless The other major issue I have with this game is the boss fights, I think the first couple are decent enough, but a lot of them have serious issues. These are fights where you have to wait for the enemies weak point to open up before you can damage them, have multiple phases, and you have only one hit point, with NO CHECKPOINTS. you have to restart the entire fight every single time you get by something, or even just land your bike wrong. The actual designs of the bosses are pretty cool, but I started dreading fighting them (The egg and crab can go to hell especially). I've complained a lot about this game, but I don't regret playing it and want to end this off with what I REALLY liked about this game. I felt like this games overall presentation was overwhelmingly beautiful, from its gorgeous melancholy soundtrack, to its striking art style. The story and characters were also engaging, theres some particular moments that are very shocking and memorable. The gameplay (while still having some major issues) was very inventive and fun for the most part (doing 360s with your bike to reload is VERY cool) You should probably try out the demo before buying the game, should tell if you'll like this game or not. I had a lot of issues with this game, but I also don't think I'll forget about it anytime soon. I wish the best of luck to the devs at brainwash gang, you guys have made some really great and unique stuff!Show moreShow less
It's a pretty unique spin on the metroidvania genre. Unfortunately, it's plagued by some of the worst boss fights I've had the misfortune of experiencing. The bird pope was especially bad, but the crab made me outright quit the game. I don't care for the furry character designs; they could have been human and it wouldn't have changed the story. I didn't really care for the story either. It's gritty and gory, which I like, but there's no substance to it. Even if the ending is good, I'll never see it as the game never gave me a reason to stick around that for that long. The music was nice, but there's very little variety. I spent so much time listening to the same "sad girl" tracks on repeat that at some point, I had to put on a podcast to replace the music to keep me from losing my mind. I should have quit this game 2 hours in. I suffered through it for 10 hours. I wanted to finish it, but I'm done. The unskippable 9-minute cutscene of a boat slowly going from right to left was... yeah. I have no words. What were they thinking? This game is soft torture. It also doesn't run at 60 fps on the Steam deck; it barely reaches 45.Show moreShow less
This game is horrible. Not in the gameplay, the gameplay is fantastic. The music is outstanding, the art: gorgeous. The story is awful terrible terrible horrible. Not in quality, but in content. Nothing is good, nothing is happy and nothing will ever get better. 10/10Show moreShow less
I had this game on my wishlist for the longest time before a friend gifted it to me for my birthday. I wish I could love this game, I truly do. The art is astonishing, the music hits like a truck, the story is engaging, but the *game*play kills this *game*. First off, the controls. You are on a bike, for the whole game. It's a 2D motorbike action game. As such, the devs should make SURE the controls are snappy, satisfying and responsive, instead they made some floaty mess with mechanics that require you to engage with the controls in questionable ways. And second and more importantly, the level design. This is what kills the game. This is a motorbike game, as such speed should be an important factor, instead this game repeats the mistakes the first Sonic made, with intricate levels that require you to stop and manoeuvre every few seconds, which pairs up with the awful reload mechanic to make the whole thing a mess. You should not be forced to make tricks in a bike game, you should make tricks because you want to, but to reload in this game you have to do a backflip every time, and that means backtracking if you run out of ammo at the wrong moment and don't have a ramp close by, which you will. The shotgun propels you in the opposite direction, but I don't know how they programmed the physics such that every time you try to do it it feels like a gamble on how the bike will actually react, it's so unresponsive and unsatisfying. The bosses are extremely uninspired and gimmicky, making the different weapon choices you have completely irrelevant, since enemies die in one hit and bosses never have a real hp bar, but a points system, making the basic pistol overshadow every other weapon in the game. Also they reused a boss 3 times straight. Also, having sidequests just doesn't fit this genre. The open world metroidvania approach just doesn't fit this gameplay. I can appreciate the experimentality but it just doesn't work. It's just a boring and frustrating experience overall, and I'm so disappointed with it because every other aspect enamours me, but you can't just ignore the GAMEplay in a GAME, and as such I unfortunately have to put this game down unfinished. An absolute shame. I will still listen to the OST though.Show moreShow less

For a healthy dose of criticism: this game isn't fun to play. It could have been, but it isn't. The story, art, soundtrack, and character designs are great. The gameplay, gunplay, biking around, and level designs are not great. This game won't feel good, it won't feel satisfying like Hotline Miami would, it won't even be difficult like a "Souls-like" but it will be frustrating. Unless you want to spend hours playing on a bike oddly similar to the controls of Happy Wheels then you're better off watching someone else play it I think. It's a shame, I tried a lot to like this game, others did too. But it's just a good idea for a videogame that has poor execution. I'm sure someone will come along and do it better and release something that feels genuinely satisfying to play. You're not going to be going fast, driving through a level, and shooting birds on the way. The trailer/gameplay footage would have you believe that's how the gameplay will be but it's much more slow paced and frustrating than that. You'll spend most of your time either teetering back and forth between spike-y hills or lost in the unmemorable maps. There are things the tutorial neglects to tell you, like double tapping W to speed boost and that a short press of spacebar will just parry an attack but a long press of spacebar will turn the bike around. You'll have to choose very carefully between the two in a lot of situations and you won't always get your choice, often resulting in you dying and/or tragically losing all momentum and joy. The game is a lot more fun when you have the dash ability but that's given to you near the end.Show moreShow less
