Left 4 Dead 1 is a great game, but there's no reason to buy it since all the maps, weapons, characters are in L4D2 along with NEW content including the ability to mod using steamworkshop. That's right, you get all of L4D1 in L4D2, no DLC, no nonsense. I'm not sure what the downvotes in the community are for, the review system is in place asking if you "Recommend someone to buy this game" and no, I don't, I wouldn't point someone at L4D1 since...again the sequel contains this game and more. So go get that game instead. Edit: Since some people can't understand the review I wrote, I'll ellaborate, Left 4 Dead is a great game, it really is and I've had a lot of fun with it. The trouble is that this game, the entire game, all of it, is in the sequel L4D2 for free and it costs the same and comes with far more content including intergrated mod support. Look, I played the game for 60 bloody hours, I have a physical copy, I have both games- I'm not just saying 2 is better for subjective reasons it has the content of 1 and an entirely new game's worth of content. So no, I don't reccomend it when the sequel is the same cost and you get more including 1's content.Show moreShow less
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do NOT buy this game! Allow me to explain why. All of the content from this game, all levels and characters etc, are part of Left 4 Dead 2 by default. This means buying this one is redundant. Just save the money and buy the sequel so you can play them both at the same time plus have the added benefit of the new monsters you get to fight from the sequel. ~~~~~~~~~ 2019 EDIT: After countless people explaining the differences between the games, do yourself a favor and research these two great titles. I am sure there is a video out there showcasing how they are different. I personally feel that this game is redundant however many disagree and would rather play the original content on the original game only, not on Left 4 Dead 2. You should figure out which is best for you before buying. With that being said, keep in mind these games are getting old and frequently go on sale for dirt cheap prices. I think you can sometimes even get both Left 4 Dead titles for about $5 total which is worth it. Then you can install and play both and decide for yourself. All that matters is that they get played because they are terrific and shouldn't be forgotten. ~~~~~~~~~ Review: As for the game itself, I highly recommend this title. This is teamwork at its best. You literally can't get through this game by yourself. Sure, you can play single player mode just fine since the AI is decent but I mean you can't play ALONE as the game will inevitably put you into certain scenarios where you will get pinned down and die without someone there to save you. So either another player or an AI will have to help you up or it's game over. The gunplay is fast and furious. The zombies are fast and attack in hordes so you can't really survive long by standing in one place. There isn't too much story but with this type of game you really don't need story. Just fight your way from one obstacle to the next until you finish the game. Terrific good time.Show moreShow less
Considering all of the content from this game is now included as a free add-on for the sequel, buying this feels a little pointless. Skip it and grab L4D2.Show moreShow less

This isn't inherently a bad game, but in 2019, it's hard to have a positive experience. Before I even discuss the game, I need to mention the community's abnormal toxicity levels. Many veterans are vehemently toxic against new players or just everyone in general. Team killing is enabled, which means you will regularly get downed by people for your lack of skill as you try and learn the ropes, while they clip their mic audio shouting racist slurs at you. There are nice people that play this game too, but the few bad apples seem disproportionately numerous and vocal. Beyond that, the servers are just about dead. Versus mode only has occasional matches going, I have yet to find a full Survival mode lobby, and there are only 2 or 3 campaign choices going at any one time. There are a bunch of custom player servers you can join, but these modify the game in weird ways they won't explain, and their players usually rip apart noobs anyway. If you start your own lobby, a couple of people may trickle in here and there, but it's uncommon. Your best bet is to have a group of people ready to play with you, otherwise you will likely struggle to gain any traction in the multiplayer. Fortunately, most of the content can be experienced as a single player with bots. This is not the ideal way to play. The bots just aren't skilled enough to handle the higher difficulties, and they aren't able to navigate around the game's randomized challenges in a satisfying way. For example, in the last hour of play before writing this review, I had two instances where the AI screwed up my run. In one instance, a witch spawned immediately next to the level exit, and none of the bots were willing to approach the door to move on. This voided an achievement I was going for. In another instance, I was in the escape vehicle at the very end of a 30-minute campaign, and the bots got confused and never entered with me. Eventually a creature called a Tank entered the vehicle and pummelled me to death, again rendering an achievement unobtainable. I am mentioning achievements because there is a significant lack of other ways to measure your advancement in the game. There's no sense of progress - no unlockables, no leveling, no story, no real reason to even survive a campaign because the credits roll and....nothing happens. A game doesn't need progress to be fun, but I found myself looking for reasons to play each campaign more than once or twice. Left 4 Dead heavily relies on random item and enemy placement for replayability, because there is VERY little content here to play. There are a total of 6 campaigns, and they can each be completed in 20 minutes or so on easy. The hardest difficulty can make campaigns take over an hour. And that's all you get! A few different modes using the same maps don't help to make this game feel any fuller. The gameplay itself is decent for a game of this age. It can be satisfying to feel hordes of zombies melt under your gunfire, and there is a definite visceral rush to getting overwhelmed by mobs or attacked by a variety of "special infected". Limping to the next safehouse on painkillers can feel like survival horror, while cornering up with a skilled team and controlling a very dangerous situation is cathartic. Unfortunately, the presentation is headache-inducing. The Source engine was never good for dark environments, since light sources don't spread out properly. This means that you're often swinging your head wildly to see the entirety of a pitch-black room with a small shaft of flashlight in the center of your screen. It's very fatiguing on the eyes. Zombies meanwhile are all practically colorless, and you have to strain to make out shapes in the gloom. The audio design is even worse - the weapons are FAR too loud and repetitive. When a 30 minute campaign has literal thousands of zombies to kill, there is rarely a quiet moment through the constant gunfire. Zombies are, as you would expect, shrieking and awful. Were it not for sound being an important part of strategy, I would have gladly played this game on mute. This game may have been fun in its heyday, but over a decade later, I really couldn't recommend it to anyone but the rare gamer that will have a group ready to check out an old game together. The community is toxic, the bots are stupid, the content is slim, and the overall presentation is terribly ugly.Show moreShow less

Just wanna quickly say, Left 4 Dead is incredible. The absolute only reason I don't recommend this is because Left 4 Dead 2 offers all the content of this game, new content and better graphics for the same price. Go get Left 4 Dead 2 instead of this. It's so worth itShow moreShow less

First of all, this is a great game. Then, why the thumbs down? Left 4 Dead 2 includes every single feature (including maps and campaigns) of it's predecessor, so go buy that instead.Show moreShow less
