It is hard to state something like this when you're talking about one of the most famous indie game ever released, but here we go: I hate LIMBO. What I cannot really stand is its illogical way to present the puzzles, as to the player is rarely given the opportunity to recognize a danger and work out for a solution. The whole game is just a repetitive exercise of attempt->death->retry->death->solution found->new death. The death in LIMBO is not a punishment for the player's mistake, but the only possibility to find the solution to a puzzle. Frustration above satisfaction, you'll never solve a puzzle because you're good, but because you died enough to understand the only way to pass a section of the level. Praises go to the art style and to the atmosphere, and to the decision to have merciful checkpoints. Not enough for me.Show moreShow less

Even after all these years, LIMBO is still one of the greatest indie-game. It's hard to classify it: it's a platformer, but it will rarely require good timing; it's a puzzle game, but you won't spend hours trying to figure out solutions; it's a horror game, but there's no blood, no jumpscare, not even fear, just a disturbing atmosphere. I wouldn't recommend this game if someone asked me to suggest a platformer, a puzzle game or a horror game. But for someone asking for something new and/or looking for a game with a peculiar atmosphere, I wouldn't hesitate one second. PLAY THIS GAME!Show moreShow less

This game kind of makes me feel like I'm playing an old NES game but with better graphics and less fun 8-bit music. Its very simple mechanics make it quite an interesting game. You start off with no idea of what's happening, no back story, no one popping up telling you "USE TEH ARROW KEYZ TO MOVE." It just throws you in the game, basically telling you, "you figure it out. You're smart, right?" Each time you fail a puzzle at first, you learn from your mistake how to go at it in a different approach. It's a fun little game that's a good game for reminiscing about simpler game times.Show moreShow less

I enjoyed this title, but would not recommend it for most people. The first half of Limbo is what I wished the whole game was like: creepy, atmospheric, and tense. Somewhere near the halfway point, almost all encounters with living creatures stop and the player is introduced to nothing but puzzle after puzzle all the way to the end My complaint about the puzzles themselves is that they are based too heavily on trial and error. There are few puzzles that a player could look at, predict how it would respond, and plan a solution for. I finished Limbo in 2-3 hours.Show moreShow less

It's atmospheric. It's dark. It's horrifying. And it's utterly disappointing. LIMBO is full of unfair deathtraps, puzzles with a single convoluted solution (that take progressively longer to figure out and to solve), and so much trial and error and dying that the gratuitous checkpoints still feel like they're not numerous enough. Frustrating puzzles. Shaky jump controls. Platforming that often requires perfect timing. Dark lighting that is more often a hindrance than a mood-setter. And if you want to check it out as an artsy game? Don't bother. There's so little story, the title tells you more about what's going on than the events within the game. Maybe this was the cool thing to do when this game was released. But for my recent playthrough, all I got was a pretentious art game where you'll spend most of your time dying terribly, redoing sections because you made one tiny misstep, and most often of all, referencing walkthroughs to figure out what the hell you're supposed to do.Show moreShow less

LIMBO is a grim platformer in which you journey through an eerie world full of darkened enemies to reunite with your sister. In terms of a story, that's about all you get. Rather, the strength of this game is its atmopshere, puzzles, and some aspects of exploration. You're given no real context about who or where you are, creating a mysterious tone that endures throughout the game. The art direction complements this perfectly. At no point do you have to wait through loading screens; the world is designed very fluidly, with each area leading smoothly into the next. While the levels are mostly linear, you are expected to backtrack in several; the game encourages exploration, with side paths often leading to hidden rewards. The controls are extremely simple, relying only on the arrow keys and Ctrl by default. The puzzles start out relatively straightforward, but progressively increase in both difficulty and complexity as you continue. With every successive level, you are introduced to a new mechanic or aspect of level design that enhances the traps. While the overall theme of the game is relatively somber, the more exciting areas require quick thinking and precise movements. Many of the later puzzles involve quite a bit of trial and error, but I never became overly frustrated with any of them. The only issues I have with the game are that it is locked to 60fps in fullscreen mode, and that the controls cannot be changed from the in-game menu. However, these things are not especially problematic. All things considered, the atmosphere and puzzles are fascinating. It's well worth a playthrough, especially if you can get it on sale.Show moreShow less

Bob walks out the house in the morning. He starts to cross the street, he looks to the left. It is clear so he walks ahead. Bob gets hit by a car from the right. Bob walks out the house in the morning. He starts to cross the street, first he looks left and then right. It is clear so he walks ahead. Slips on some spilled oil and gets hit by a car. Bob walks out the house in the morning. He starts to cross the street, he looks left and then right. It is clear so he walks ahead. Steps over some spilled oil and reaches the other side. He gets a call on his phone and doesn't notice a cyclist who knocks him back into the road. Bob gets his by a car. Welcome to Limbo. Population: Bob. But first, an English lesson. Skill (noun) ~ the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc., to do something well. Usage: "The dancers performed with skill." Recollection (noun) ~ the act or power of recollecting, or recalling to mind; remembrance. Usage: "Bob had perfect recollection of everything he did wrong when crossing the street." It's too bad that the developers of this game confused these two. There is apparently some underlying artistic expression happening in Limbo related to depression and suicide. So they sat down one day and figured the best way to express that was to just kill the player over and over again by making it impossible to progress without actually having fore-knowledge of what will happen next. Then they remembered that they were actually supposed to be making a game and threw in some puzzles, some of which were very clever but ultimately the result is that Limbo feels like it wants to be doing two very different things and can't make up its mind. Schizophrenic design and a focus on the theme of depression... somehow they didn't think it was a bad idea on paper. I'll say this though, they certainly captured the essense of suicide. Because they completely killed any hope of this game being entertaining. As a final note, the game is sickeningly violent. That may seem like an odd thing to say because the game is all greyscale but the fact is that the developers have intentionally gone to great lengths to make the main character's deaths as vivid as possible. The game repeatedly has the main character dismembered, bisected, beheaded, crushed and impaled all with gruesome detail both visually and aurally. You can hear the bones crunch and flesh tear as well as see and hear blood splatter. It isn't pleasent and it may be the singular reason for the high reviews as many see this kind of morbid stuff as highly entertaining. Furthermore if you are a parent looking to buy this for a child, thinking that it is harmless, you need to look elsewhere.Show moreShow less
