If you are disabled and can only play with the onscreen keyboard then I do not recommend this game as it doesn't work with the Windows OSK. I reported this in 2022 and 2023 and it has still not been fixed in 2025. Bizarrely this is the only game I have played that doesn't recognise the OSK so I don't understand why the development team have issues with this. All in all, disappointed in the devs on the radio silence on a gamebreaking issue for some disabled gamers EDIT 16/09/2025 So with the inclusion of the rebindable keys I discovered a work around. For some reason only certain keys don't work such as the arrow keys, however rebinding those keys to say WASD will let you play. Unfortunately for me that required the assistance of another person to rebind the keys which is frustratingShow moreShow less
I do not understand the Stardew Valley comparisons, this is not a farming sim. If you are seeking a farming sim this isn't one. Pixel art is amazing, NPCs are funny and enjoyable to speak with. Potion making could use some work, I expected more of a mini game from it vs picking directions from a book. Some of the spelling/ways of speaking are off.Show moreShow less
Personally, I think it's too early to give this game a negative review but I also can't justify paying $16 for the small amount of joy you may get from it. The game, by itself, is good. The art style is cute, the music is nice, the atmosphere is relaxing! The game is similar to Stardew Valley, as many have mentioned but like the kiddie pool version of it. There's no where near as much world and nowhere near as much to do, which can be expected from an early access game. However for the most part, all you're going to be doing in this game is tickling a few creatures and whacking a few plants to get materials to make potions that either advance the story or get you coins. Day in, day out. You unlock a new area, in the story, you get a new ingredient, you make a new kind of potion that either advances the story line or can be made for daily quests for coin. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. The only break from that, is that you have a few areas and 'secrets' that require certain potions to make to explore. Which returns you to that grind to get the parts to make it. It was fun for maybe the first hour or three but soon it becomes a daily chore that has no purpose. The easiest way to put it for you Stardew Players is, it's the game if you buy a Member Ship card and have to farm corn over and over to pay for the village upgrades. The monotony hits quick and the game instantly loses any appeal it had. Another thing many players complain about is the dialogue, I personally had no problem with it as for awhile I was invested in the story but there is no skip option and there is a LOT of dialogue that you cannot avoid. I would recommend if the developers either A, added a skip option for the players who aren't interested or B, added a some of the dialogue in little gab windows that pop up near the top of the window so they can still move and play while the main character is yapping to her hat as 9/10 times, they're saying something that doesn't really NEED to be up in the players face. TLDR; The game has potential, it's cute and fun but at the present it's lackluster and monotonous after a while with slow grindy progression and a very small amount of gameplay. The game will probably improve drastically when it's finished and has more interesting content to take part in, but for $16 it's little more than a flash game where you interact with creatures and plants to make keys that advance the plot or give you money.Show moreShow less
First impression is positive, game runs smooth, story and gameplay is engaging enough for me to want to come back after having finished the tutorial and unlocking the town. Artstyle, UI and sprites, all are very pleasant to look at. The crafting system is simplified, you don't have to grind like in Graveyard Keeper, it's more story focused, but everything has a twist to keep ingredient collection interesting. It comes with the typical stamina/time management system like Stardew Valley. Can't tell you about the length of the available content yet. Big nono, be aware: Keybinds are fixed and you control your character with arrow keys and need 2 hands on the keyboard at all times. Developer needs to add custom keybinds soon!!! Would be neat to have mouse support and custom keybinds, but it's early access... For the price, it's a no-brainer. Would recommend. Game has potential.Show moreShow less
This review is made in reference to the Little Witch in the Woods Discord server. It's been a year and two days now since the release of LWitW Early Access, and I wanted to provide a bit of an organized recap of what we've been so far. A lot of people, including myself, have purchased this game under the guise of there being a transparent workflow and incremental updates, as is normal with early access games. In the events leading up to this game's public release, we've had numerous announcements in the dev-log channel, including the enemy Dubby, the painter Vinch, and a cave area to explore, all things still not in the public build of the game. Since May 16th 2022 though, we have received three dev logs (7, 8, and 9) and only one meaningful patch update with multiple small bug fixes and languages added all close to the initial release of the game. it pains me to say this, but in my opinion the dev logs listed have all been incredibly short , showcasing predominantly small mechanical and UI tweaks with a couple teasers of short gifs and still-images of gameplay to come. Furthermore, the first two dev logs, 7 and 8, since release each have taken approximately two months to be posted (July 14th and September 6th), with the first and only content update of the game being on November 23rd (over six months since the release of the game in EA), Our final dev log 9, whilst slightly bigger than the last two, has taken nearly 5 months since 8 was posted, and we have been left with radio silence since then in both the patch note and dev log channels since the time I post this, three months later. In my opinion, I believe the devs have treated the early access release of LWitW as a full-pricetag demo, with the wavering promise of a finished game in the future, that is why I also believe we have to jump through the unnecessary hoop of opting in to a beta on an already early access game to see the one small content update we've been given, and though they have stated they plan to release the game in 2023 it's been shown that the game records are being updated in Steamdb, I can't in good conscience suggest this game to any of my friends in its current state, and I feel most of the people on this server share in my frustration. To any and all people interested in purchasing this game, I hope this post has added clarity to your decision. To the people that purchased this game and hope for a finished product, I hope you continue to let your voice be heard and we hopefully reach the devs. And to SUNNY SIDE UP and the team working on this game, I hope you understand these criticisms come from a place of love for LWitW, and our desire to see the finished game and know it is not abandoned, as was the anniversary of it's early access release on May 16th past. Thank you for readingShow moreShow less
Little witch in the woods is a very charming game. It's a laid back enough that you don't feel incredibly rushed to finish quests! There's also no serious consequence for staying out past 2am. With that said, there are a few things that i've found a little wonky [all be it is going to be released in a few weeks so don't take what i say as the end all be all lol.] - Controls are honestly really frustrating. I'm hoping we can button map once full release is out - playing on p.c has been a challenge and not a fun one. - My computer meets the recommended requirements but loading in takes almost 4 minutes at times. I'm not sure why, but hopefully that is fixed upon release! - The dialog i've encountered so far is very charming/funny/rich. It's very read heavy, so if you don't like games like that you might not find that part of the game as fun. I personally enjoy it a lot! - Inventory space: it is honestly really, really, REALLY tough. Stacks only go up to 20 and you quickly find yourself running out of space at home & while foraging. It's definitely a bummer, but i also see it as another fun challenge. [Make what you can and sell. That's what i've been doing at least.] -User interface: Uh, i've got preferences and i'm not against theirs so to say, but definitely a learning curve at first. Perhaps that's the click happy in me. :D I WANNA PLAY - oh woops, i should have read that haha! So far the story line progression feels pretty smooth, just a lot longer than i thought it would be, for the reasons above. I'm not holding any of the things i've said above against the dev's though, as i know they're about to release and that release will really be my make or break for the game once i've played a bit more. But hey, about 9hrs in and i'm enjoying it so far. 7.5/10 **Edit to update since official launch** I've requested a refund - i'm actually really sad. I can't say i'd recommend this game anymore sadly. Once it was launched i really dived into playing and added some more time into the game. Boy, that was a doozy. I expected some major improvements and got progress locked as well as losing a lot of progress due to reloading older saves. "Fine, i'll just wait for updates! after all it just launched there's bound to be some little bugs" i thought. Well yeah, there was. But then it went from 1 update, to 2, to sometimes even 3 in one day. Yeeeesh. So i decide to wait a week, let them work out the problems and come back to a gaming experience that'll hopefully run much smoother! No. -Now the game takes even longer to launch. -UI for p.c playing has not changed. Playing with a remote barely works at times [and yes, i definitely checked my remote & even launched through steam with the remote on big picture mode on other games - the game just tells you which key to press and not a button. Very frustrating] - Stacks are still the same, storage is definitely still very challenging & buying storage is still quite expensive in game. - Quest progression has now had some problems with identifying whether or not the quest was complete, locking your save and forcing a reload to an earlier save due to patches. Which means wasting time. :( - Some quests need clear instructions, i've had to turn to reddit more times than i care to admit just to complete a few. Might be a translation problem & for that, i won't complain too much, they are trying, but it does take away from the game for me. TLDR: Wait a little longer, and check back. They're trying to fix a lot of problems and it will absolutely make playing past the second act less fun, and more frustrating.Show moreShow less
Consider this a review specifically of the Early Access version of Little Witch. I'll happily revisit the game and update my review after EA, and I look forward to seeing how it improves. ~~~~ Pros: ~~~~ *Little Witch is rated A for adorable. The pixel art, animations, character design, conversation portraits, names of plants and animals, activities like chasing pumpkin pups or blossom birds, even just the basic concepts of many things in game, like the fact that you brew magical candy. It's all so cute. *A cozy cottagecore vibe is the game's other main strength. It doesn't want you stressing about crop schedules and remembering when someone's birthday is or which villager likes to eat amethyst, it just wants you to relax, and it is pretty good at fostering that relaxation as long as it doesn't get in its own way with clunky controls and unwanted dialogue interruptions. *No combat! At least none that I've encountered yet. That's more of a sub-point to the last one, but worth mentioning on its own. In a world innundated with games about fighting, it's nice just to be nice for a while. If there is some kind of combat later in the game please correct me in the comments. *I liked that a couple of quest-related mandatory long walks across the map were skipped with cutscenes. The world is pretty cute and worth exploring, but less tedium is appreciated now and then. *Lastly, and it's a small thing, but an unexpected VA11-HALL-A reference at the start made me giggle. ~~~~ Cons: ~~~~ *Sometimes the game isn't cute and it's jarring. Newer Disney and Pixar movies blend some adult humour into kid friendly films really well, and Sunny Side Up should take notes. Ellie's sense of humour tends more toward crass or juvenile than subtly mature. *Little Witch leans heavily into a retro game vibe, and sadly there are areas where that detracts from the game. The controls are spot-on old school, and distractingly bad for it. Arrow keys to move, Z to select/activate/do everything, Q-W or E-R to scroll through things, S to open one menu and D for another (with no button to smoothly swap between them without backing out), X to cancel. Inventory management is awful just because of the controls involved, and potion brewing, one of the game's main activities, is similarly badly handled. It's a constant annoyance to contort my hand to get anything done and a session any longer than my two hours as of writing this review will definitely leave my hand cramped if I don't switch over to playing on my Azeron soon. *The worse sin however is Little Witch's bad writing. Dialogue is sometimes stilted, frequently repetitive or abrupt, and overall amateurish. Many characters immediately declare their motivations and history, and when they don't there's a clearly labeled button to prompt them to do so. Inexplicably there is also a button dedicated to prompting NPCs to spout the kind of meaningless jibber jabber you automatically tune out or skip whenever possible in games where very litte effort was put into the dialogue (and it pains me to write that as a person who enjoys the roleplaying aspect of games and often hears out everything NPCs have to say—I'm not usually a dialogue skipper). Virgil, Ellie's talking hat companion, is a modern day Navi, ever ready to interrupt you in the middle of something with a reminder that you haven't mashed the "skip dialogue" button in a while. All of this is pretty unforgivable for a game that bills itself as being all about the story. So, if the gameplay is intentionally spare to focus on the story, and the story makes you want to skip everything, you have to ask yourself what's left? Well gosh, it's just lucky that it's so darn cute.Show moreShow less
Cute game! Enough grammatical and mechanical writing errors to convince me that the game creator is not a native English speaker; there are definitely some sentences that do not parse, or translate well. Recommendations: 1) English-speaking editor. 2) Use of mouse for navigation or interaction, as well as standard WASD direction keys. 3) Simplified NPC interactions -- it takes too long to cycle through all their lines to get OUT of interacting with them. 4) Please, please, please cut out all the boredom on the train... it's excruciating. 5) Have a journal or notebook where upgrade requirements can be kept, so players can keep track of what they need to gather/earn. 6) Allow players to access inventory from within interactions with NPCs -- e.g. if player is told the purchase of an item costs so much, allow players to see funds available to them; or if player attempts an upgrade, give a specific message about what, exactly, is missing, if player does not have all items required. I look forward to seeing what you're able to do with the game!Show moreShow less
The last thing you expect from a pixelated chill indie game like this is that flight simulator like amount of controls. Tons of menus and options, no mouse support, weird default settings. As a one-handed gamer I haven’t imagined that I’d be unable to play this kind of game one day. I hope there’ll be mouse support in the future, but until then I have to refundShow moreShow less
