I've enjoyed the heck of of this game. But with the most recent update I can not genuinely recommend it to most people who play games. If you are a HYPER casual gamer who doesn't even really want gameplay then this game might actually be for you. For anyone who actually want's a game in their game, that's mostly been removed here. I waited quite a while to leave a review since the patch dropped in hopes that the creator would package the new version into some sort of "easy mode" or "story mode" setting but no such thing has come to pass. The game was already HEAVILY on the casual side on release, removing all of the last little bits of challenge that existed in the demo, but it still had a lot of charm. I would describe it as more of an exploration game, even without the smallest challenge or consequence there was still a lot of exploring and collecting to do. Kind of a super casual version of Stardew Valley with more areas to explore. But at this point the whole thing is just trivial. Everything is so beyond easy, everything is so instant, my decisions have 0 impact on the outcome, I can't even get myself to try to bother to make progress anymore. The main gameplay feels like you booted up a casual farm sim and then enabled god mode to just cheat your way through it real quick. I'd like to stress that I wasn't looking for some hyper competitive gamer experience and then got upset that this game was geared more towards a casual audience. I went in expecting Stardew Valley level, got something that's a lot more casual, still enjoyed the charm and exploration, and then got it completely de-gameified out from under me. This is now a game for an extremely specialized audience and I just can't recommend it for most people who want to play an actual video game.Show moreShow less
I feel like a lot of the negative reviews I've seen here have the wrong notion of what the game is. If you are looking for Stardew or Harvest Moon-like experience where you balance time, resources, and relationships; this is not the game for you. If you are looking for something that is more chill like Animal Crossing (New Horizons specifically) but with the basic functionally of farming, mining, and exploration (puzzles are easy but fun) then this IS that game. I have greatly enjoyed my time exploring, running dungeons, grinding resources and designing a cozy farm. I like the stress free experience of spending in game days in a mine without worrying about passing out or losing my harvest. I like exploring the maps for every chest and book or whatever other secrets each biome might hide. And most importantly, the art in this game is incredible. It is beautiful, colorful, calming and makes you look forward to every new biome Bonus: Co-op is well implemented so its super fun to just hang out with friends and fish or mine together.Show moreShow less
Cute game but it lacks depth. I really like the idea of a casual Rune Factory/Stardew game without stamina, calendar events you can miss, or any other type of pressure, just the more involved parts like growing crops, raising livestock, exploring caves and temples, beating monsters and finding treasure. However, after about 3 hours everything starts to feel samey, each profession has a simple mechanic that ends up in items to sell for money, nothing else, no special items you can make and use. Then there's the Lumas which, unique pets you have to hatch from eggs found in "myserious places", however they do nothing, their only use is to put them in a pen to generate another generic resource for crafting. It also feels like it's way too padded to compensate for lack of content, the same resources like wood and stone are duplicated for every new area forcing you to do the same thing multiple times and getting slower to gather every time. Proud of of your pickaxe eating through stone? this new stone that looks the same and does the same now takes 15 hits to break, have fun! All in all it was a few hours of fun but I feel like it's not worth it to waste my time if there's no variety or depth.Show moreShow less
Looks like a game, feels like a game, had fun with the game. Why's this so hard for AAA devs?Show moreShow less
TLDR - Good game, can be very grindy. Any new updates/content require a new save and all progress lost including one coming soon. Unless you like losing your entire saves and progress every time new content comes out and having to redo the ENTIRE game from scratch DO NOT BUY. Loved this game, played with a friend, both got 100% achievements and finished everything. This was before i found out from their discord server that the next big content update coming out will make past or current saves pointless as you will have to start over again to actually get to play any new stuff. So if you are currently thinking about getting this, dont. They have even said they cant rule out this will be the case for ALL future updates. So if you want it, wait till the game is fully released and no longer getting updates. The game is quite grindy which i dont mind and actually play quite a few similar games but its not a fun kind of grind that you want to do more than once, let alone multiple times. If this changes I will change my review but until then i cant recommend it.Show moreShow less
COZY GAME BUT NEEDED MORE TIME TO COOK I recommend Luma Island, but with reservation. There are many things this game does that are really good, and some things that make it really unrewarding. However, there is always time to patch things over and introduce improvements. If in future the game does implement certain improvements, I shall have zero reservations in recommending the game to everyone. What follows after this passage are my detailed observations, but if you want a tl;dr version, this paragraph was it. Things this game does well: The visuals are very warm and pretty. It nails the cozy vibe pretty well. Very intuitive, you don't need to be taught most of the functionalities since they are either easy to understand, or button prompts. The camera movement is quite fluid and do not hinder your exploration. Having pets with interchangeable skins is cute and fun. They are quite functional too. The details in world design can be quite mesmerising. Puzzles aren't too difficult and offer just enough challenge. In short, this is what I would expect an evolution of Stardew Valley to look and function like, which is an immediate pro in my eyes. Things that need to cook a bit (or a lot) more: - The map is not helpful at all. The game treats the map screen as a journal and map combo, but it only shows the location of certain people regarding the quest you're following and nothing else. You have to remember which squiggly line is what. - There is no run button or toggle, which could've been helpful with a map this size. - There needs to be an option to either finely adjust your pointer location or to highlight it before performing an action. As things are now, if you have multiple interact-able objects before you, tough luck interacting with the one you want to. - Hitbox detection is janky for interactive objects. If a tree is blocking my path physically, my axe should hit it when I click. But you'll have to move around before your pointer lands on the tree which is literally blocking your way. - Professions are pointless. You can't eat the food you make or grow or forage or fish. You cant use the things you craft. Everything is for the sake of the profession quests and lose utility after said quest is done. - Levelling up tools is a pain because metal ores are scarce. - Nothing has any purpose. If you plant a few trees, your need for those trees is immediately over after completing the quest that needs a fruit from those trees. There is no incentive to maintain them or even keep them at all. - Combat is janky. Needs more feedback upon hitting an enemy. - No health, which can make for a cozy experience, but makes combat seem pointless. - No hunger or energy, which makes the game cozier, but then why am I cooking? - Game pauses and screen goes blank to indicate time of day changing. This is a bad replacement for the usual trope of having you sleep to end a day. Sleeping has little purpose, and days feel unending. - Village feels lifeless because there is no story, characters don't interact with you unless there is a quest. Nothing feels alive at all. - No way to upgrade your mobile home and no reason to either, since it does nothing but offer you a place for optional sleeping. - No way to label your chests, which is something most farming/life sims have. - No way to trade items directly with other players. - Items being collected by whoever passes by a workstation is a pain. I order 5 planks, my friends passes by and collects 2 by mistake. When I need those 2 back, he has to go drop them in a chest, and then explain to me which chest he left them at. Because this auto pickup happens, because you can't trade items, because you can't label chests. - Bottomless backpacks seem fun in theory, but because it is given right in the beginning, it keeps getting more and more cluttered. Also, making chests seem pointless except when you need to exchange items with other players. But that too requires all of you to plumb the bottoms of your bottomless backpack to see who has picked up what since everyone picks up everything by accident. I wish the developers looked at other farming sim games and implemented a few of the things that give them their heart and soul. This game is beautiful and comfy, but there is nothing that will bring me back here after I have done everything once and revealed the entire map. The functional bones that make it a sim, or a farming game, or a cozy life, are absent.Show moreShow less
Its a big nothing game. amusing enough. but what are you really progressing for. the only upgrade is to your tools. every thing you make is just to sell. getting hit has no real consequence. As it stands i just wish there was more motivation to progress, more fleshed out NPCs, anything to make it feel like more than a shell of a gameShow moreShow less
PROS: -Game is very pretty; all the areas are nicely designed (honestly, I really love the environments). -No stamina/forced sleep requirements -Very fluid coop multiplayer (probably the best way to play this) -Puzzle/exploration focus of the maps make it interesting to explore -The ruins areas have some neat little puzzles and traps -Three difficulty levels to adjust how much danger you face from enemies, depending if you want a peaceful or more risky adventuring experience. CONS: -The only use for farmed/crafted items is to sell for cash; no synergies between abilities and crafts -No interior house decorating options -No complex social mechanics with the town/NPCs -Leveling your professions doesn't unlock any new mechanics or buffs The farming and crafting mechanics are more simplistic compared to the exploration aspects of the game; overall the game is not super deep but is still pretty enjoyable.Show moreShow less
Just booted up my game and found that all my progress has been wiped due to the new update. It is pretty devastating because you have to grind so hard to accomplish anything. To be honest, I am not planning on playing anymore of this game. It was cute but not cute enough to start all over again. New buyers beware.Show moreShow less
