game is good. tl;dr: real money is only for cosmetics and trading with other players. man the amount of reviews calling the game p2w when the only way to buy anything "win" related with real money, is from other players. the Matrix Marketplace is player run, the items you can buy there that would be "p2w" can only be used in the extraction mode. which has limitations on how much power you can bring in. there are no "60$ mechs" the Ace Recruitment bundle is just cosmetics. No they haven't "paywalled" everything. Blue currency, aka Matrix Credits, are earned exclusively in the Extraction mode and are used to purchase items for the Extraction mode. You cannot use real money to buy them. Red currency, aka Mission Tokens, is the seasonal currency, you get it from playing the game, you cannot buy it with real money, but you can increase how much you get by buying the seasonal pass. It will accumulate the "extra" currency you would get so you don't miss out if you don't buy it immediately, and can choose whether or not to buy it at a later date. It resets every season. Green currency, aka Achievement Points, is exactly what it says, points you gain from completing achievements. You cannot buy these with real money. You can spend them in unlocking stuff for your "Pilot Report" and insignia slots for your mech and pilot. Yellow currency, aka Corite, is the paid currency. You can buy it with real money, but you can also get it by selling things you have in the player controlled "Matrix Marketplace". You cannot directly use it to buy power. You can only buy power from other players. Outside of the Matrix Marketplace this currency is only used for cosmetics. There's certainly a conversation that needs to be had about whether or not allowing players to sell game power to each other with a paid currency is ok and good. I personally think its fine, as it allows players who perform well and extract good gear to capitalise on whales who have more money than sense to buy that gear so they can afford cosmetics without using real money.Show moreShow less

I played the game before release and loved it. I was excited to play it until I was greeted by the insane "micro" transactions and an auction house you can sell said "micro" transactions on! $47.99 for a pilot and mech?! Wtf?! You can straight up pay money to extract items from mashmak (aka the extraction mode)! Who thought this was a good idea? This game had the potential to be the next big thing but now I feel dirty playing it! All they had to do was sell $15 skins like every other f2p game! TLDR: Greedy BS, I don't recommend! *Update* After the sheer volume of hate I have received from what appears to be bots, morons, and possibly even employees of Seasun... I have turned off comments. It is my opinion that the game was better in beta and loot boxes would be less greedy then the MTX in this game (which is incredibly sad). Besides that the gameplay doesn't feel as good as the beta either. They also lied about removing AI voice acting from the game as far as I can tell. I also believe that many of the positive reviews are fake. Maybe you have a different opinion but I really don't care! There is no world where I can play this game and be ok with it morally. Even if they made changes to the MTX, hired voice actors to replace the AI, and fixed it's insane balance issues I wouldn't come back. Thank you for all the steam points haters!Show moreShow less

Look, if you're here for the cool mech fighting, the awesome mechanics, and the immersive gameplay, you're gonna have a good time. But if you concentrate on their monetization practices, from a certain standpoint you do have to understand it's a free game and we're getting way more than what we bargained for in the beta in terms of gameplay. Many people have left reviews about cosmetics and characters costing $5 a pop. Characters only cost $5 if you want to create a character that is the opposite sex of the character you first created. Most customization options are free or locked under the new earnable currency. But accessories, which to be fair you don't really see much even you see the pilot very minimally, so I don't really understand why people are so bummed about the monetization considering the game just came out and they need an income from somewhere. The gameplay is 10 out of 10. You will enjoy yourself. There's a game mode for everybody. There's casual play, there's a sort of ranked play, there's 6v6, there's an extraction shooter, there's more content and we're gonna be getting constant updates. I suggest you give a chance to this game because more often than not you will enjoy it. Don't let the reviews demotivate you from experiencing one of the best games I've ever played. For my reviews purposes I have to preface that I have played the beta before. It may have been only the most recent beta but I clocked a ♥♥♥♥ ton of hours during that time.Show moreShow less

Was a huge fan of both the betas that came out, but instantly lost all desire to even start up a game after seeing how much of the customization that was in the beta being either removed entirely, or added behind a paywall and user marketplace. First of all, I didn't play the beta(s). Second, I'm a huge f2p leecher. I play gachas, mmos and everything in-between with the express intention of not spending a dime. Until launch, I didn't even know this game had any other modes except the 6v6 arena. So that's what I came to MechaBREAK for, and that's what I'm gonna review. After 8 hours I can comfortably say this is a fun game. It looks good, it runs good (more on this later), it scales well, and it's the first multiplayer game in a while that kept me going "one more match" for an entire day. In my 8 hours at time of review, I have never once felt I was at a disadvantage in the 6v6 and 3v3 modes. People are railing on the game for customization and pay2win but I've been winning just fine without spending a dime. I spent like 2 hours (give or take) in the pilot customization interface, there are sliders galore for anything your mind could conjure. Maybe the interface is not very intuitive and people don't realize there are sliders? To add to this, you can customize your character at any point afterwards if you're not satisfied with your initial output, FOR FREE. Other games I've played ask for money to alter your character's appearance after it's locked in. Here they ask for money for swapping genders. That's... fine? Which brings me to my next point: This is predominantly a 3rd person mecha hero shooter. Your "pilot" is nothing more than a glorified Christmas tree on which the developers hope you'll hang overpriced ornamental cosmetics. If you care about prancing about looking pretty in a singleplayer space, sure, be aware that you're gonna get milked. But if you care about actual gameplay, this game is as good as it gets when it comes to mecha combat. With one ongoing caveat: At launch, there are 3 mechs that are not free to unlock. You can unlock them PERMANENTLY with currency earned from playing matches. The economy of this currency is very lenient with its rewards at the moment, and you could probably unlock one of the gated mechs in as little as a day of play. My only long-term concern here is that they might increase prices of new mechs down the line, or lower currency rewards from matches, leading to a longer grind to unlock whatever's new. Another ongoing concern might be balancing and the fallacy of releasing new mechs that are overpowered in the arena, baiting whales into splurging early to unlock them. Time will tell. That being said, if you enjoy playing matches, and the economy stays the same, you'll have no problem unlocking whatever new mech you want simply by playing the game. Now about performance: a heads up to RTX 4070 users - the game locks us out of using Frame Gen for some stupid reason. This can be easily bypassed by going into: steamapps\common\MechaBREAK\Game\MechaBreak\Oversea editing TargetGfxRenderer.config in your favorite text editor and changing "DirectX11" to "DirectX12". Save changes and you're good to go. The launcher will still show DX12 as greyed out/unselectable but upon entering the game, shaders will be recompiled again and you will be able to FrameGen. I have my game capped at 90fps with a mix of high/cinematic graphics settings, running DLSS balanced at 3440x1440 and I get a steady FPS with occasional 1/2fps drops. I was hoping I'd be able to run the game on maxxed out Cinematic but oh well. I'm happy with the initial performance after my graphics tweaks, the game still looks great and most importantly for a multiplayer game, it runs great too. Here's hoping for more performance tweaks further down the line. All in all, this is a solid 3rd person mecha hero shooter. They 100% nailed the feeling of flying around in light mechs, being an annoying, hard to hit pest, or a ultra-heavy brick wall of an absolute unit, carrying around more guns than common sense, unloading into anything that dares approach. In terms of hit registration satisfaction and feel, I rate this way above Marvel Rivals, a game that I very much wanted to love but couldn't because of how floaty and lacking in impact it felt. It's funny that a game about flying mechs feels less floaty than a game about superheroes punching each other. If you bothered reading all the way to the end of this, give the game a try, it's free after all, and it might just leave a lasting impression on you.Show moreShow less

Disclaimer: I did play both last open betas. Currently Champion IV at Operation Verge on SA server. This is the game mode I mostly played this launch, and most of this review will be based on it for now. I am going to change this review to NEGATIVE if matches become too hard to find, as they did in the betas. Edit 16/07: Added a section with my take on ranked games. Abstract 6V6 and 3V3 modes are NOT pay-to-win. period. Mashmak (extraction shooter) does have P2W aspects, but are limited to this mode only. Some items might be sold/auction for Corite (real money currency). Most customization/cosmetic items are way too overpriced. Not a problem for gameplay, but I fear they wont be able to sell well on most regions at that price point. High-rank ranked games are very dependent on (specialy)Welkin, and queue times for them are also unbearable depending on the time and day. (on week days, from 18:00 to 02:00 are fine. Expect 30+min queues at any other times) Overall POSITIVE Aspects The main game mode: OPERATION VERGE (6V6) is working just fine as of the time I am writing this. No Pay-to-Win aspects on 6V6 nor 3v3. 12 of the 15 Mechas(Strikers) are unlocked from start. The other 3 are purchasable via in-game-currency (Mission Tokens). After playing for 3 straight days, I've got sufficient credits to purchase one of them. but [next point] 7 day trial for each of the 3 purchasable Mechas. In that period, you are not eligible to get achievements specific to that mecha, but >I'm pretty sure< you can still get the main currency by playing with them, so, you can do it, while grinding. All Playable Mechas are just beautiful. Controls are very responsive. It feels very nice controlling all of the mechas. Movement is very polished. Overall character and mech's customization are better than most other games, even after some of the features present in the BETAs were not present, or not yet available. Some customization are indeed obtainable for free via in-game-currency. Some are cheap (simple colors), others quite grindy (seasonal outfits), but feel on par with other similar systems. It's FREE and not P2W as long as you have 6v6 and 3v3 in mind. Mashmak does have P2W aspects that might influence more on higher difficulties. Cross-Plataform and Cross-play with PC and XBOX. Overall NEGATIVE Aspects Casual mode still does not award anything whatsoever. Not even Mission Tokens. Shop pricing for cosmetics with "purchasable currency" (Clorite) and direct purchase is not compatible with the current reality of South American countries. 19% of the minimum wage on Leonie Frève is not very reasonable. Region Based servers. So, if I want to play with a friend from NA or EU, I need to start a new account in that region. 15 mechas seems to not be enough to create a very diverse match. Specially when some roles are filled with only one option (e.g. Welkin). This can change with future updates by adding more mechas. Menus are lots of times non-intuitive, and overwelming. E.g.: Why call the in-game shop "Logistics"?; Purchasable items are all over the place; 20+ tabs of options and ads. Mashmak still has items that can be purchased with Corite ("real money"), which might very easily become P2W. Mashmak feels very sparse, at least at the start without gliders. Map does not show many points of interest. Yet, its the mode that rewards the most items. Some good features from the betas were removed or are not yet available (e.g. animation options not yet implemented, containers and color drops from 6v6 matches removed, and others.) Not Linux Compatible because of ACE-Anticheat. Yet, it is steamdeck compatible. (It does work fine with Proton-GE 10-5, but it is unlisted from git. Good luck finding it, and use at your own risk. Proton EM 10.0-23 Gets ingame, but soon after you get kicked from the game.) My take on the Ranked Match State: (considering General + matches) > Welkin is a must< The meta is basically all based around Welkin. Welkin is a very strong and feature complete Striker, but also has tools to force the most important aspect of 6V6: Objectives. And right now, it's the only option suitable for that. If your team does not have a Welkin, expect a most likely loss. >Play with groups< The devs have not yet specified some details of the matchmaking process. But I assume that people on pre-assembled groups are being matched against solo players without any type of limitation. In more than 4 cases I've confirmed 4/5ppl groups playing against full solo players at the same rank. >Tricera + Stego< One of the most common combos. Both brick-like semi-stationary Strikers are almost always present. Both take a lot to kill, but Tricera have: parry + 360° shield + heal + Anti-missile defense + stagger in his kit. Together, both are very challenging to destroy, and again, most of the time, a "Meta" team will be composed by Welkin + Stego + Tricera. >No proper draft system (blind pick)< Is quite common that matches are decided at draft, however, there is no way to know whats on the other side until the game begins. A proper draft system would be helpful to structure better counter-plays, since we cannot change Strikers mid-game. Neutral Aspects There is an in-game marketplace where we can (in theory) sell or auction items for Corite. Still have not used that function yet, and I have no idea how beneficial or prejudicial this can be for the game, since cosmetics as well as Mashmak items can be obtained here. For a Launching title, the game seems overall balanced, but still need some tweaks. Why does everyone looks so sexy? The community suspects most of the 5 first Ranks in 6v6 are mixed with AI Bots playing on both sides. I do not have proof of that myself, but I do tend to believe this is indeed true. The frequency of these seems to reduce as the player gets higher ranks. At Master/GMaster Ranks and up, expect to play only with humans, with longer average queue times. Would-be Pleasant Changes: Show at least an image of the map/mode we are about to enter in Operation Verge BEFORE or while we choose our Strikers. There is the name of the map, but it will take some time before anyone can memorize each one of them by name. Localize prices for the reality of each region. Make casual mode reward at least Mission Tokens. A PvE mode? At least a PvE only Mashmak mode. Even if the Rewards are lower. Kinda personal, but I got friends who really wish to play the game, but are not into PvP. Let we play with players from other regions. Polish the Main Menu experience. A proper draft system. Impose countermeasures for pre-assembled parties at ranked games. Make your Anticheat Linux/Wine/Proton compatible. The game already runs fine on Wine/Proton without it. For god's sake. (Edit: Proton GE 10-5 seems to work, so, please, do not ban anyone for using it) Conclusion: If you like mechas or feel indifferent about mechas, and like Hero-Shooters, I do 100% recommend this game if you plan on playing 6V6 or 3V3, for as long as the queue-time is bearable. 12 of 15 characters avaible from the start, with polished gameplay and no space for P2W is really something remarkable for a fresh IP. If you want to play it for the extraction-shooter experience; I guess its worth the shot, but the way things are monetized might be a let down. More time is needed for the community to really feel how grindy and/or frustrating the F2P experience here might be. English is not my native language.Show moreShow less

I want to start off by saying. This game's gameplay is some of the most fun and fast-paced moment-to-moment gameplay you can find. However, as someone who has played the beta and put in roughly 100+ hours. I can say that, IMO, the game took a few steps back and/or did not improve on anything as of its release. No, I'm not going to complain about the marketplace or the $50 pilot/mech skin. I'm instead going to talk about the fundamental gameplay loop and the direction of the game that the devs are desperately trying to force. I understand that mods in Ace Arena and ranked mode were frowned upon. Because it was "payt2win." However, I don't think people realize how much that gutted the progression experience by removing it from those game modes. Similar to D2. Mecha Break had a very unique ecosystem where two wildly separate game modes offered you rewards. These rewards (mods) directly benefited you in any content you decided to partake in. The mods enhanced your moment-to-moment gameplay; even if they were below average, they still made a huge difference when it came to a smoother gameplay experience. Now, yes, in a competitive environment, I can see how this is problematic. But hear me out. Who the f*ck cares about the competitive environment? As someone who climbed to Grandmaster 1 with my eyes closed. I don't care if the game has a competitive scene. Not every game needs to be Valorant or Overwatch. Sometimes a game can just be fun, I know, crazy. And yes, making micro adjustments to my mech that personalized my falcon's strength made the game feel more intimate. I wasn't going round after round partaking in gameplay that did not offer me a substantial reward. " but the competitive rank up is the reward." No, it's not. I'm not 17 anymore; I don't care if I'm in the top 100 on a meaningless leaderboard. This is coming from someone who's done it on multiple games. It's a waste of time. Unless you're streaming, rank is irrelevant; it always has been. Video games aren't my job. The annoying part is, they could have kept the mod system for the casual PvP mode at least. Is the game still fun? Yes. But a big part of the appeal has been lost. I have zero reason to do mashmak because whatever mod parts I extract won't come with me to the other PVP game modes. So why even touch it at all? After waiting like 2 months for the full release. All they added were a few new maps and a few new mechs. No new game modes. Meta feels mostly the same. Which is lowkey a problem. Also, the VAs suck. I liked it better before when all I heard was the AI voice. Now I have some cringe dialogue in my ear while I'm trying to chase an Aquila across the map. I won't speak on the meta too much because that's a book of its own, but the game is very rock-paper-scissors. If you think you can play one mech and kill anyone, you're sadly mistaken. You do have counters, and IMO they take this way too far sometimes. It's gotten to the point where if I'm in a lobby where everyone is around my skill level. I simply perma-target 3 individuals at most that I know I can kill. (Aquila Narukami Luminai) And simply ignore everyone else, which at first is fun but after a while gets really remedial and boring. Yeah, if I run into a Welkin player, that's terrible. I can solo him as Falcon, but how often is that going to happen? I understand they want a very balanced game, but sometimes a game can be too balanced, to the point where every round just plays the same as the last. And for a game that's trying to be balanced, it's not that balanced. "hey falcon go chase the snipers; that's your job." Yes, I know it is, and it's been my job for the past 12 lobbies. 90% of my gameplay is spent fighting those same mechs and nothing else. God forbid I wanted to screw around and fight a stego; sure, I can do it, but I'm actively griefing the lobby if I do that. Which means I have to play the same time every game. Sure, I have good lobbies back-to-back with ten kills per game and zero deaths, but all those kills are just me farming the same dude and nothing else. That poor Narukami. I know he's not having fun, and neither am I. Hopefully i can change this review to a positive one day. (And for everyone saying i need Pay2win in order to farm players. Understand that i have a 9.59 KDR in champion rank, 940 kills 90 deaths. i don't need mods to clap on ppl in 90% of my lobbies)Show moreShow less
