Disclaimer: This is written primarily with fellow single-player-oriented players in mind. There are idiosyncracies with co-op that might not be what you expect or hope for; please review both positive and negative feedback on the mechanics to make an informed decision about whether the way co-op works right now is right for you. Moving onto the singleplayer review: TL;DR Summary: Do you enjoy the MW IP? You'll PROBABLY like this game, but might wanna wait for a sale or do more research. Do you like a sandbox campaign where you play at your own pace but you don't really have a compelling reason to move forward beyond your own motivation? You MIGHT like this game, if you're into the general setting of giant mechs, even if you're unfamiliar with MW, but again might wanna wait for sale. If only one of the previous two is true, might wanna wait for a sale. If neither is true, you probably will never like this game. Have spent a decent amount of time playing this game on a competing game service: [Deleted link in case it hid my review, it was a screenshot, but I have 3d, 16h, 26m and 9s clocked in on said service] MW5 is not a perfect game. MW5 has a bunch of drama surrounding it. MW5 won't cure cancer, but neither is it the embodiment of Satan. MW5 is decidedly... okay. Worth 30 bucks? Frankly, yes, I'd say so, even if you knew nothing about the Battletech universe. Easily worth that if you do and you'll recognize all the mechs, weapons, and factions in the game. It lacks an engrossing narrative campaign like in Mechwarriors 2 (and expansions), 3, or 4, though there is... some body of one there. But it serves little purpose other than to give you additional motive to pump up your company and not just sit in the initial low-level area. While on that note, MW5 is very focused on that aspect of the game, with mixed results. If you aren't a fan of running a bunch of procedurally-generated missions to incrementally upgrade your arsenal and mech roster to take on incrementally harder missions with more and deadlier opponents, awesome, go ahead and leave this game behind. If you thrive in a sandbox environment, don't go away just yet. You fly around the Inner Sphere, doing procgen missions for the 5 Great Houses of the Inner Sphere. If this means nothing to you because you don't know the lore, all you need to know is it's basically like a 5-way civil war where everyone's stabbing everyone else in the back. You're a flagless mercenary commander who signs up for whoever has jobs. You can keep doing jobs for the same faction for loyalty perks (more “negotiation points”), but that's about the extent of that. Said negotiation points are used when taking mission to select bonuses for your pay, salvage rights, or insurance for damage taken (higher rate than points for base pay, but you ONLY get money for damage your 'mechs sustained). Salvaging mechs requires an all-or-nothing value of points, you can't bank parts like in HBS's Battletech, but as you gain loyalty and/or select the right (i.e. multi-mission) contracts, it will give you ample points to afford the heavy cost of mech salvage. Otherwise, weapons and gear take one or more points, with a 'tier' system giving subtle bonuses between weapons of the same type (i.e. a Tier 5 Medium Laser is functionally identical to a Tier 4 one, but has slightly better range, damage, lower heat generation, and so on). There's a healthy amount of debate about MW5 “dumbing down” the customization from previous titles, about its canonicity, people pointing at the tabletop manuals and arguing about random excerpts... look, the long and short of it is, MW5 has a different paradigm from the previous games, even 4 which was a departure from the TechManual. Where 2 and 3 had the really generous reading of “if it fits crits, it sits” rules from the TT experience and you could shove a bunch of lasers into the legs or something if it made you happy, MW5 opts for a more fluff-oriented approach of battlemechs having a set role. 'Mechs will have, say, 3 "Large" Missile slots, which can each fit up to an LRM-20, or any smaller size of the same family (an LRM-15, 10, or 5, or any size SRM). It's a one-to-one hardpoint swap -- you don't "double up" on smaller sized weapons. A slot's a slot, fitting one and only one weapon; it just has a maximum size that'll fit. I preferred MW4's system, myself, as it made weapons a bit more abstracted in size (wasn't just small-medium-large, but different numbers of 'sockets' taken per weapon, and components having a number of 'open' sockets that you could fit accordingly), but either way I personally consider it better than MW2 and 3; you may not, and your opinion is perfectly valid, too. My take on it is, if a 'mech is meant to be a missile boat, it's a missile boat – you can't just arbitrarily decide it now carries twin AC/20s. This means that you're forced to prioritize salvaging or purchasing 'mechs (or variants thereof) specific to the roles you want them to serve, rather than the old way of 'mechs basically being “choose your favorite-looking/most-meta-hitbox'ed one” and only using that. I prefer it that way. You may not. If you don't, might as well move on for now. But, weapons aside -- No Ferro-Fibrous nor Endo-Steel. If you know what this means, you know, and there's much gnashing of teeth and wailing of women at this. Again, call me a shill, but I equivocate it with the lore: At this point in the timeline, FF and ES are both Lostech. And, funnily enough, they are mounted on some Hero or Star League-variant 'mechs, they're just a 'hidden' value that leads to weight reduction according to the calculated value, accurate to TT. Similarly, engines can't be changed in rating, nor can you mount Light/XL engines (Again, something something lore something something Lostech). Again, again, some variants actually have XL engines, 'hidden' from you seeing them on the interface. They even take crits. EDIT: But, if it catches your attention at all, wishlist the game and wait for the great mod-updating of 2021. Plenty of modders have made Mechlab-expanding projects, and some non-zero value of them are already working on updating for the current build. Nope, I have no idea when they'll be done, but to be fair neither do they; just sayin', if "I want a more-open Mechlab!" is holding you back from this game, fair enough, there will almost certainly be a mod giving you more features in that regards soon. The game is set roughly in the 30ish years prior to the Clan invasion. What does this mean? Well, if you have passing familiarity with the BT franchise and consider yourself a salty veteran because you played MechAssault once or twice, this means you won't see Timberwolves (“Mad Cats”), Stormcrows (“Ryokens”), Mad Dogs (“Vultures”), or any of the other Clan-designed 'mechs, nor will you see any of the Inner Sphere Clantech-derived designs that have been 'poster mechs' like the Bushwacker or Uziel. The game does feature a subtle time progression mechanism, such that as you play the game (and progress in the timeline), 'mechs with more powerful weaponry, or later variants (with different weapon slots) will begin spawning as opponents and in shops. The game, at least at a surface glance for the purposes of this review, DOES appear to just... FEEL better than the pre-patch version. There are a bunch of UI tweaks that clean up a lot of what you're looking at, and a bunch of subtle immersion stuff like character lipsyncing has been added. Dumb, I know, but have to say it because there's a committed force of trolls ranting and raving about how it's literally the same since day 1. I've been playing on and off since day 1. It's not. I return to my first rhetorical, do you like sandboxes? If you don't, then you probably won't like this game, but that doesn't really mean the game is objectively bad, it just means you don't like sandboxes.Show moreShow less
I liked this game, I really did. But when you realize that AI completely ignores everything and everyone to focus you, it totally breaks immersion and forces you to play in a single way - tank. Like you will literally see enemy mechs walk through and around 3 of your AI allied pilots to rush you. A pity, really.Show moreShow less
Wait for a sale and pick it up, with DLC 1-3. When you do, download the MechWarrior 5 Load Order and Activation Manager from the Nexus Mods website (or use the version included in the linked folder); the mods are already in the correct order inside the "Mods" folder in the linked .zip folder download, but just in case their load order gets messed up somehow, you can copy the list below (also included in the downloadable folder), open the MW5 Load Order Manager (LOM), click "File"-->"Import Load Order," paste this list, AND THEN CLICK "APPLY" to re-order the mods so they work. Protip: when you set up your install directory, you have to point the program to the file containing your game's executable application file, or else it won't be able to detect your mod list. That folder will be named "Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries" in your file directory. You're welcome. I am a life long mechwarrior fan, starting way back in the 90's with Mechwarrior 3. I cannot recommend this game. Thoughts in no particular order Mechwarrior 4 came out 21 years ago, and the animations for the mechs were better than Mechwarrior 5. Mechs would limp, mechs would get knocked over, mechs could crouch, etc. I mean seriously, TWENTY ONE YEARS AGO! What was the point of all that epic Tim Sweeney money if you can't even be bothered to animate the mechs to the standards of MORE THAN TWO DECADES AGO!!! Speaking of Mechwarrior 4, it seems in Mechwarrior 5 I don't have as many lance mate options (Ie, stop moving) nor do I have radar toggle where I can turn my radar off for stealth. Something Mechwarrior 4 had. Speaking of lance mates. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. They are absolutely useless. They will straight-line charge into assault mechs. They will shoot you if you're in the way of their target. They will shoot hills and rocks if there's an enemy on the other side of it. They're almost worse than useless. Lancemates in MW4 were **SUPER** good. Did that Tim Sweeney money not cover AI developers that could code something better than a 21 year old game? In MechWarrior Online (made by the same dev) there's this really cool "infrared" view for spotting mechs in bad weather conditions, and things like smoke would block it. Did that make it into MechWarrior 5? Nope. Speaking of the infared view, Mechwarrior 5 has a night vision view, but every map (even a literal moon at night) is so bright that it's useless. It's not even "enhanced" night vision that shows heat signatures. It's just a useless green filter. For some reason there's endless enemy spawning in all missions. This would be cool for some missions (ie, you're deep in enemy territory) but it doesn't make sense when a mission literally says you're in a remote outpost taking out a communication tower so they can't call for backup, yet endless mechs keep showing up? On the topic of endless enemies, they will spawn out of no where. This is most frustrating WHEN THEY SPAWN IN A CITY YOU HAVE TO PROTECT! UGH!! Cockpits leave a lot to be desired. Throw a map in there, have a light toggle, give me some dangling cables that jiggle with each stomp...something. The developer did this with MechWarrior online yet left it out on this?! In MW4, going up slopes slowed you down, while going down slopes sped you up. This was not implemented. Cutscenes and overall story is pretty lame. If you played the Turn-based BattleTech game, it's a copy paste story. "boo hoo my dad/mentor died in front of my eyes in a horrible and sudden raid and now it's up to me to be a merc and avenge.". BattleTech already did this three years ago.... Overall volume mixing is weird. Sometimes voices are too quite to hear, other times way too loud. There's this horrible and jarring acceleration in "pilot view" that is just...awful Emblem choices are pretty lame I'm not co-oping, but you don't unlock co-op until HOURS into the game. I think what bums me out the most, is that the majority of these items arn't even difficult (in perspective) things to do. They can easily add engines/mech speed, they can easily change spawn rates and location, etc. There isn't anything *fundamentally* wrong with this game, it's just a lot of details left off for no reason and it feels unfinished. Now that I've built a wall of text bashing the game, there are a couple things worth mentioning that is good. Mechs and weapons feel great, they nailed the stompy shooty bits down. The audio work is also top notch, there is a lot of attention to detail in that side of the game and they did a really good job there. The game also has political borders that shift as time flows, with news updates on what's going on around the galaxy, which is super neat. Mechwarrior 4 isn't graphically better than this game, obviously since it's so old. What makes it better is just the little attention to detail that this one lacks. If the bulk of my thoughts were addressed, I would recommend this game.Show moreShow less
We need the oldschool Mech Warrior games on Steam too!Show moreShow less
Don't buy this for the co-op. Had to play almost 2 hours of single player just to unlock co-op to find out only the host has progress and mech customization. The other players can't use their unlocked and customized mechs unless they host the lobby. Also, the game didn't support my flight stick and requires me to manually create the information in the config file to use it. If you want to play by yourself or your friends don't care about progression and customization then you might enjoy the game. Graphics are ok, story isn't bad, and game play is good. Just not the kind of co-op experience I want in a video game.Show moreShow less
Bought it again now that it's on Steam and now I can uninstall the EPIC launcher that makes my PC dry heave. For starters, don't malign this game for being on EPIC. They refunded everyone who kickstarted it when the epic deal was announced. Piranha is a tiny studio and EPIC gave them a juicy deal that helped them keep their bills paid. The end result was absolutely a better game. And now that it's on Steam, you get it for cheaper, with DLC, and tons of patching (day 1, week 1 this game was a bit of a mess with lots of patches) and lots of mods. Is it perfect? No. Is it fantastic big stompy robot action? Absolutely. I did honestly have higher hopes for the plot. I mean, Piranha got the voice actor for duncan fisher to come back for MWO. The default plot starts nowhere and goes nowhere, NONE of the characters have a modicum of personality. No hammy FMV to laugh at. All the voice acting is dry. The writing is dry. The character models in the ship look like mechs wearing people-skin. your ship itself feels dead and empty. As it stands, the inner sphere map feels kinda tiny, and there doesn't feel like there are any big plot changes. I wish I could change engines, armor and structure types in mechs like MWO, jsut let me do it at a core planet, giving them more utility. I want my 100KPH urbie back. I wish there were environments like MWO's forest colony, with 500 foot trees that dwarf my mech (A giant redwood in California already dwarfs an atlas, why aren't they in this game?) so all the biomes feel a little plain. Kind of "desert. Snow. High plains" without a lot of interesting stuff. More distinct biomes would be better. Friendly AI needs a HUGE improvement. I would prefer a weapon slot system more like MWO. This one is fine, but again, kinda lacks the ability to go nuttybananas. It's not like the game has PVP to balance, let me put 26 machineguns on an atlas! I'm hardly an objective reviewer. I have over 10,000 hours in MWO. MW4/BK/Mercs is one of my all time favorite series. I played MW4 competitively on dialup internet. I am as "into" this as you can get without playing tabletop. And I love this game despite all its derpy, weird decisions. It still FEELS like mechwarrior. And that's what matters. If you like mechwarrior, you should have a good time with this one.Show moreShow less
The game looks great... However, if you value your privacy stay away from this honeypot. They have literal TOS and privacy policy screen before the game starts that makes it clear they sell your data to third parties for "legitimate interests".Show moreShow less

Got this game alongside a friend with the intention to play the multiplayer but a few problems popped up A: you have to be more than 2 hours in to unlock multiplayer in the first place. thus preventing the acquisition of a refund b: people who join don't bring their own pilots and/or mechs. they have to select from YOUR available mechs and pilots c: if they get destroyed while doing a mission they could potentially cost you valuable gear and mechs as well as the pilot There is ZERO Incentive to play multiplayer for guests. they get NOTHING in return. and the host has the potential to lose significantly if things go poorly.
