2026 EDIT: The game has now received its final patch, supposedly, and it's still a really bad port of an incredible game. Despite of that, the fans managed to polish it to a point where it's arguably the best way of playing MGS2, one of the greatest games ever made. These patches, fixes and mods should be considered mandatory: MGSHDFix MGS2MC Better Audio Mod MGS2 Community Bugfix Compilation Technically, I would now recommend this version of the game, but I really don't want to change the review to a "Yes" because Konami doesn't deserve it for doing the absolute bare minimum. Original review: Locked at 720p. "Mouse support" is just emulating the right analogue stick, so there's no mouse aiming (can't aim with the right stick in MGS2). Keyboard controls are nonsensical and can't be edited. Selected button prompts get reset to the default Xbox ones every time. The manuals are web pages that aren't even aware of the above option. It's locked at 1280x720. The sound quality sounds worse than the original or the HD Collection on PS3 / 360. The option to download the Japanese version takes you to a non-existent Steam page which stealthily adds it as a DLC, which you then have to notice to activate, since the game doesn't tell you about it. They advertised the game as only supporting 1080p, which is already bad enough, but it's actually only 720p. No windowed mode option, although it mistakenly opened in a window on first run, and the framerate was unlocked. No video or graphic settings whatsoever. IT'S LOCKED AT 1280x720. March 2024 EDIT: The 1.5.0 patch REMOVED native controller support! The entire collection now relies on Steam's terrible API to translate controller input! None of the above issues have been addressed since release, except that the DLC menu was hidden. 2025 EDIT: An update added an option to use 1920x1080 resolution instead of 1280x720. That's pathetic. Visual bugs related to the increased rendering resolutions still haven't been addressed. The added Full HD resolution also came with cringe AI upscaled FMVs that take up an additional 4.51 GB of disk space. These can thankfully be disabled, at least. There is now a windowed mode. The bare minimum has been met. Keyboard controls can now be changed. Some keys cannot be assigned, like Alt. These options are hidden in a newly added menu that's only accessible mid-game by pausing and pressing L1+R1 together. You can't change them anywhere else. Mouse aiming is now possible, but it's barely usable. One more issue that plagued this release from the start, but I neglected to mention in the review originally, are the terrible controls. Snake / Raiden will often stop and aim in place for a second if you re-equip a weapon while running. This can destroy VR mission runs. I'm certain that it has something to do with how aiming is toggled with R3 in this port, which itself is very uncomfortable. The coolant spray can only be used by moving the right analogue stick up, not with the Square button. Even The Twin Snakes adapted to the limitations of the GameCube controller better than this. These controls issues may have been just as terrible in the Xbox 360 port, but I never played it, so I don't know if they originated here or there. Native controller support is still gone, I have to re-enable Steam Input every time I launch this game. Another issue that was in the original HD Edition ports is that the game is in 16:9 widescreen. Yes, really, that's an issue. It's nice to have in cutscenes, which now aren't letterboxed, but due to the gameplay being based around an overhead view camera, most areas have decreased FOV to fit the new aspect ratio without revealing out of bounds areas. It feels a lot more claustrophobic. There needed to be an option to maintain the original 4:3 aspect ratio in gameplay. Honestly, just buy a DualShock 3 controller and emulate MGS2: Substance on PCSX2. It won't have the higher resolution textures of the HD Edition, but you'll get an overall more polished presentation for one of the greatest games ever made.Show moreShow less

Be the team responsible for this port: 1. Repackage a 12 year old remaster of a 22 year old PS2 game and somehow still bungle it up. 2. Wait for fans to release an unofficial fix for it, doing your job for you. 3. Release a series of patches over the next 2 months that keep breaking the fan fixes. 4. Continue to ignore your crappy port's biggest problems. Jesus CHRIST, guys. If Kojima was in the office with the team responsible for this release, he would beat you with your own shoes. I'm convinced that if someone asked you to boil water, you'd still find a way to burn down the kitchen.Show moreShow less
It took not even a full week for modders to fix EVERYTHING and make the Steam versions the definitive way to play the MGS series. MGS2 is my favorite MGS and one of the best games ever made PERIOD. Do yourself a favor and play it if you haven't already. Thank you modders.. No... not you Konami.Show moreShow less
