I feel bad giving Mindustry the thumbs down. I don't really regret the time I spent playing it and it was certainly very reasonably priced, but it is disappointing in a number of crucial ways that have caused me to lose interest in it long before I have unlocked all of the game's "content". The biggest problem is that Mindustry seems to have quite a lot of contempt toward how valuable your time is. When you unlock a new tier of technologies the game could simply give them all to you right away. Instead, it asks that you accrue enormous quantities of resources with which to buy them. And so you wait, and wait, and wait... eventually letting your factories run afk for significant periods of time accumulating the resources required. It doesn't change anything about how the game plays at all, it just adds enormously unnecessary dead time to the experience. The "campaign" too, such as it is, comes packed with dreary and needless repetition whether you're just starting out or entering the endgame. Factorio for example asks you to slowly expand across a single contiguous game space, slowly unlocking new technologies and resources as you push deeper into an increasingly hostile world. This progression perfectly matches the cadence of the gameplay wherein new challenges come in lockstep with new capabilities. By contrast, Mindustry asks you to defeat a small play area so that you can... do that again under very similar circumstances somewhere else. There's some connectivity allowed between sectors, but this system seems like a clumsy fit for the moment to moment mechanics of the game. None of this is helped by the extremely simplistic wave defence that forms the core gameplay loop. There's no indication of what units are about to attack and no indication whether it will be a ground or air attack, which is initially annoying until you realise it's utterly irrelevant. Rather than assaulting you in a pitched battle that attempts to penetrate your fortifications, the most threatening enemies appear to be the ones that can simply walk or fly over your defences and keep heading for the core regardless of where you have placed walls. The net result is that you end up arraying such enormous firepower against them that every single hostile unit is vapourised seconds after setting foot on the map. It's tremendously anticlimactic. If you were genuinely able to wall out your attackers they could be made much tougher, more numerous or both and result in longer, more exciting and more interesting engagements. In my play time a battle amounted to little more than a handful of hostile units spawning, being immediately bathed in the incandescent glow of a hundred laser cannons and vanishing almost immediately. Mindustry is not a bad game and plenty of people will be (and clearly have been) able to overlook the issues I have with it, but I cannot give a "neutral" or "your mileage may vary" score, so here we are. There's a very solid foundation of attractively stylised and pleasingly complex factory construction contained within, but a lot of the stuff hanging off that core doesn't do it justice or seems actively detrimental to player enjoyment.Show moreShow less
good game, btw the game's free on githubShow moreShow less
Look in theory this game rules and I spent a lot of time with it in earlier versions, but the way the game was changed in version 6 made it much worse to play. The difficulty is insane and chaotic, the game explains nothing and gives you no warning of what you can expect on a certain wave. Even the first "attack" map is very tricky to get through while some of the defend maps are really easy. The planet sector system is very annoying and repetitive and I much preferred the older level based system. The biggest problem though is that the game now has logic gates and microprocessors. I'm into Dwarf Fortress so it's not like I can't deal with a complicated game, but the microprocessors basically require you to program the behavior of your units in command lines. This isn't optional either, without programming your units they will just attack mindlessly and ignore enemy defenses. I'm not a programmer and the way the game worked before was fine, so I don't get why this was added in as a mandatory thing. It's extremely tedious and the game doesn't pause either while you program the processors or give you time to learn. Halfway through the game it's just like, guess what, you're a robot programmer now and forget about all the fun conveyor belt TD stuff. I hope it'll be improved eventually but for now I'm bummed out by the direction the game took.Show moreShow less
the $6 price tag is actually just stupid. devs are ripping themselves offShow moreShow less
I hate to downvote a game I just played for 12 hours, but it's oddly *laborious* for a TD game. I actually quite like both Factorio and TD, but I don't play TD to spend hours on a single map, especially to then just "launch" before getting overrun just so that I can square up with the tech tree. It's a crummy mechanic that makes the game just not fun. I spend an hour or two setting up defenses in this game, but every ten, twenty, or fifty waves, you have a one-shot option to duck out of the map in order to keep the supplies you've gathered so far. If you don't, you lose it all when you get overrun. Unfortunately, those supplies unlock better defenses in the tech tree, so you have to duck out unless your tech tree is full. I want to like this game. Honestly, if it had the "speed up" (2x/4x/8x/16x) mechanic of other TD games, I'd probably love it. It is all about automation, after all.Show moreShow less
Great game! Not for me :( I came to Mindustry feeling nostalgic for an old tower defense game called Xeno Tactic, hoping this would scratch that itch with an added RTS dimension layered on top. And the first few levels of the Erekir campaign delivered! It was factory-building first, a little tower defense in the middle, and some RTS flavor as the cherry on top. I'm not an RTS guy, but I was enjoying the mining and factory systems and looking forward to the tower defense side developing into something more substantial. My expectation was that the factory puzzles would get tighter and more complex, and the tower defense would introduce more variety. Maze building, unit diversity, that kind of thing. What actually happened around level 7 was the opposite: the factory and tower defense elements got sidelined in favor of RTS. You spawn into a big open map, the mining challenge nearly disappears, and the game just... hands you half your factory. It felt like the developer knew those parts weren't scaling well and automated them rather than making them more interesting. Then came the real wall. Learning RTS fundamentals is already hard, but having to build a factory just to reach the early game makes it nearly impossible. Imagine if chess required an hour of setup before you could play your first move. That's not a flaw for someone who loves RTS. They'd probably enjoy every minute of it. But I'm not that person. So the same thing that always happens to me with RTS happened again: I'm having fun building, not optimally but genuinely enjoying myself, and then somewhere in the mid-to-late game an overwhelming force creeps out of the darkness and explodes my sand casle because I wasn't fast or efficient enough. And there's nothing I can do about it because it's already too late. I know it's a skill issue. I just have no interest in developing those particular skills. That's entirely on me, not the game.Show moreShow less
Do not buy this if your intention was to play through it with a friend. Researches are not shared and the guests to your hosted game cannot access the research tree at all. The researches also are not shared. Your friend will have to play their own singleplayer save to unlock the researches.. So basically, yes there's co-op, but it's just you (the host) playing singleplayer with a friend that isn't able to do anything except manually mine things and shoot.Show moreShow less

I feel like this is the only way that feedback can be acted on. Game is great until the overpowered bosses. Im a casual gamer and i enjoy thinking the schematics for myself and having fun figuring out every level by myself. The game goes smooth and fun, until an exesively overpowered boss wipes your whole base, which was more than capable of holding of a 2x or 3x of the previous wave. Then you have to spend hours again setting everything back on just to try again, or you can do what everybody does and completely destroy all the fun by download schematics that you didnt make, and play rush, not even caring about what the map looks like, just unloading from core and building big ass units and taking the enemy base before the bosses. This completely breaks the fun for me on an otherwise amazing gameShow moreShow less
