I bought this game expecting a wacky cosmic horror with people turning into monsters after drinking mouthwash. What I got was a character drama exploring the horror of human depravity and narcissism. Because you don't need cosmic horror mouthwash to have a person become a monster. This game has stuck with me, my thoughts keep wandering back to it, and any game that does that is worth recommending.Show moreShow less
I can't fathom how this got to be Overwhelmingly Positive. Usually games with that rating are either extremely good, or good enough and extremely cheap. Mouthwashing is neither. Fairly decent writing and characters get you interested at the start of the game, but then devolve steadily into vague nonsense; tone-deaf, derivative "horror" sequences; wholesale abandonment of the themes that got you invested in the first place; and an ending that drags on about half an hour too long -- just enough to get you outside the refund window. Watch a let's play if you must, but save your money.Show moreShow less
This feels like a trolley problem but there is no lever and there is no alternate track. you are simply watching a group of people sufferShow moreShow less
Great setting, narrative and characters. Got me hooked from the start as a nice thriller story.... that was until halfway it turns into a walking simulator filled with long repetitive corridors and I would be forcibly taken away from the immersive experience to do the surrealism segments. I know I'm clearly on the minority here, but unfortunately, the outstanding story got completely ruined for me once the game decided it wanted to be like every other indie horror filled with excessive surrealism and became a 'hold forward and watch thing happen around you' kind of horror. Team has potential, so I look forward to their next game, this one just didn't do it for me halfway into it unfortunately.Show moreShow less
Have any of you ever seen that scene of Broly where he is so overwhelmingly enraged that his eyes turn red and the pupils explode? That's me when I see Jimmy MouthwashingShow moreShow less
I hate to call this overhyped, because this game is someone's passion project at the end of the day. The creative mind(s) behind this are more than thrilled to have people invested enough in their game to make videos dissecting the plot, gushing over easter eggs, making fun fan art. That's all so so so great, good for them. But it *IS* overhyped. And I feel crazy that I'm in the small minority of people that share this sentiment. I feel just plainly cruel when I look at that one reddit thread"Mouthwashing is lame," eyes mystified at the paragraphs upon paragraphs of hurt fans insisting that people like me are wrong. We just didn't read into the symbolism enough. We didn't take time to really sit with ourselves after the credits rolled to decipher what the plot was all really about. Go read the thread for yourselves. Please. Am I crazy? I feel like the keyboard warriors defending this game are like 14 years old, maximally, and are only as fierce as they are because they watched their favorite YouTuber give it polite accoldates in the end. As they should. Because!!! The story was alright. The art style was fun. The devs deserve the praise! But the characters... it's the characters. Shallow. The pitfall with this game is that it was unsuccessful in getting the player to have a real connection to them and their backstories. All the hallucations/dream states you had to play in fell flat. What. was the heart ultrasound thing ??? With the... dog? W h a t? And I think this is how the public opinion diverges on the game. YouTubers give the characters voices and have their little commentary while they play. Then fans take to the comments, other media platforms, to connect with others that shared this same experience. It goes viral. And again, the developers deserve all the attention and praise! But the /amount/ of praise... From a linear walking, fetch-the-item game like this. I feel cruel because I am so downright confused on the people that say "this is the best horror game experience I've ever experienced." WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT. WHAT. what. The 14 year old cap is extremely generous. I want to say 13 so bad. Or is this the age of older teenagers that joined the internet during the pandemic? Are you following my train of thought? I hope so. Cause we all played the same game, right? Right all the 600 something other Do Not Recommenders at this current point in time? Mouthwashing was a cool little experience. Read all the other reviews in this category to hear more concise explanations as to why it is just simply Way Too Overhyped. Not enough intrigue. Too short for the price.Show moreShow less
Mouthwashing is disgusting, distressing, and infuriating in all the right ways. This is the proper traditional usage of science fiction writing, using the bleak backdrop like a stage to tell a story that could've worked regardless of the setting. In fact, this feels like a more graphic version of a Star Trek: TNG episode, albeit perhaps a few of them combined given the writing and concepts here. Avoiding spoilers, this is more Kubrickian psychological horror that is closer to "The Shining" than Paul W.S. Anderson's "Event Horizon" that most people might expect; Mouthwashing is more stressful than it is scary, so even non-horror fans should be able to handle this (just don't eat while playing). The story itself is more coherent than you'd expect but the quality of the writing and the way the story is told elevate it. All of the characters are well written and are fleshed out with backstories, needs, dreams, and desires by the end of the game. No one is a caricature, everyone is unpredictable, and they all feel like believable human beings. The chapter progression is non-linear to the point of intentionally causing confusion and gaslighting the player, but it's the main driving force to keep pushing the player through an otherwise predictable story. If it weren't for the Tarantino editing and schizo elements, most people would be able to "solve" this by the halfway point. However, the devs created something really unique here, thanks to the power of film and the influences of outside media. With a few more games under their belts, I imagine these devs might some day create a low budget Game of the Year. For now though this is still one of the best "walking sims" I've played. A wonderful psychological horror story that doesn't overstay its welcome while creating an unforgettable experience.Show moreShow less
The craftsmanship is very high, but the emphasis feels too focused on forcing a traumatic vibe than developing the story in an interesting way.Show moreShow less
SPOILER WARNING (i am so sorry everyone, ive just seen the comments) What a beautifully horrific experience. When it comes to depicting sexual assault in media, so many tend to glorify it, to show the act for shock, make it some sort of revenge story for the victim, showcasing it was necessary for character development. But Mouthwashing does none of that. Anya is a terrific character, not falling into the tropes of revenge hungry or timid and shy, but simply a woman who is trying to survive. Who is aware of the situation she is in, of the man who could snap at anytime and tries to act accordingly. Despite what Jimmy and perhaps the rest of the crew thinks, she's smart. She's one step ahead, hiding the gun from Jimmy because she has seen him at his worst, keeping Curly alive with scraps of medicine. And without showing the assault happen, we see how this has affected her. The noises Curly makes reminding her of what happened, seeing someone choke and struggle to move due to lack of autonomy. Her attitude around Jimmy, carefully planning out what to say as to not set him off. And of course, the baby. The baby she does not want, trying to figure out ways to get rid off it. Alcohol (mouthwash) can't guarantee termination. waiting is not an option at all, and so she takes care of it by killing herself too, because she could not see any other way. That is a reality for many women. And that is pure horror. And of course, the discussion around rape culture. How (predominantly) men will protect their rapist friends for whatever reason (they don't believe the victim, deep inside their friend is still a good person etc), and we see how protecting an abusers leads to more harm down the line, even to their own "friends." And when you protected them, and now you are the one being harmed (by said friend or someone else entirely), whose to say you'll be saved? Be believed? They'll use the same talking points you did "I can fix this", "I'll talk to him", and now you have no one. But all of that could have been avoided. If you had taken responsibility in the first place. I ranted a tad sorry but this game is so amazing I don't think anything i say will do it justice.Show moreShow less
You could 100% watch a playthrough of this game and get the same level of enjoyment as if you'd played it yourself. Usually I'm a fan of walking simulator-type games, but this didn't do it for me. There's so little interactivity and what game-y parts there are, are very tedious and annoying to get through (the red light, green light, section specifically). The atmosphere is great, the characters are nice, the story is ok, but it can all be conveyed perfectly and without the tedium through a video playthrough.Show moreShow less
