Photonflowers is a collection of Muv-Luv side stories and fandiscs put into one package with several hours of content removed in the name of censorship to widen the amount of places the title could be sold. There's about 2 hours worth of content cut out from Photonflowers that the original fandiscs it's adapted from had which is something you should be aware of before purchasing since you wont be getting the "complete" experience that you'd have gotten if you read the original fandisc releases over this combined package all-ages release. As of this time Age and Sekai Project have both confirmed they have no intention of restoring the originally removed content for Photonflowers OR Photonmelodies which had significantly more cut out (roughly 5 hours of content) and no intention of translating any of the original releases that this compilation was compiled from. In regards to the title itself there's really not much going on here that's worth mentioning. You get a pretty frustrating Sumika After story and a handful of very short side-stories which are entertaining but are too short to ultimately do anything. The sequel collection Photonmelodies has significantly more content that is far more entertaining than what Photonflowers has and as a result you can safely skip out on this package and instead get Photonmelodies since they're almost entirely unrelated with very little crossover and what little that is relevant could be consumed in a 3 minute summary. As a result I recommend skipping this release and going with the sequel collection that's nearly finished unless you absolutely need everything muv-luv related even if it's not worth the money.Show moreShow less

Review for both flowers and melodies. Well, overpriced and with cutted content, but more important that I didn't find stories really worth it. With setting like Muv-Luv you can make something more interesting imo, so only for fans I would say. Supplement. Skipped. Rain Dancers 5\10. Too generic, like your usual anti-war stuff that you see in every war movie. Resurrection 5.5\10. I'm not that horny ig. Also Yuuko my fav character in Alternative, and there is too little of her. Inheritance 6\10. Not bad 30 min story. Chicken Drivers 6.5\10. This one was promising, but unfortunately too short. Atonement 7\10. Marimoooo-chaaaaaan. Altered Fable(Sumika route) 7\10. Funny fanservice with not bad humor. I liked it more than Extra since there is less teen drama. Adoration 7\10. The best part of the melodies for me, feels like prequel for something good. Confessions 9\10. Maybe I overscored it, which is to be expected because I saved it for last. Confessions is the main reason to read these spin-offs imo, dark and sad story, wish all of them were like this.Show moreShow less
Much like the original trilogy, this collection of side stories varies wildly in quality, sharing a lot of its strengths and weaknesses. When it's at its best, it's fantastic, but at other times it can be mediocre. Muv-Luv photonflowers* consists of 12 side stories, 7 occurring in the Extra world line and the remaining in the Alternative one. Of the Extra stories, 'Before the Sakura Trees Bloom' is the best and feels the most substantial. Picking up directly after the conclusion of the Sumika arc of Extra, it's fun to return to a lot of these characters. It had many issues that made it difficult to enjoy, feeling too long for what was ultimately a very simple story, with a contrived conflict that made it hard to like either of the major characters. But the ending was satisfying, even if ultimately the story felt redundant, with characters ending in the same place as the original's end. The other Extra stories were very short, each revolving around one of the characters. None of them really work beyond the occasional humorous scenario within, and feel like a waste of time. These stories could have been a way for the writers to develop them further beyond their roles in Extra, since in that everything always revolved around Takeru. But instead they continue to be one dimensional, feeling like they have no reason to exist once Takeru isn't in their proximity anymore. The Alternative stories overall are much more impactful. Of these, Atonement and Confessions are the standouts and are what makes this game worth getting. Atonement follows the training and initial career of Marimo, her experiences surviving beyond the 'eight minutes of death', and her growth following these. Confessions details the subsequent training of Michiru by Marimo and her personal and professional struggles as a squad commander. These two stories resonate for many of the same reasons as Muv-Luv Alternative, with characters questioning why they fight, justifying themselves outwardly with professional reasons whilst internally having other more personal ones. They struggle to cooperate with others, having to put aside personal affairs for the sake of the mission. Characters deal with a lot of guilt and emotional trauma, be it from not being able to pull their weight, to having forsaken their homeland or ideals, to the guilt of having survived a sortie. There are action scenes, but the most interesting thing about any of them is what's going on in character's heads. The ending of Confessions, which feels like a continuation of the Atonement arc, is excellent and is as strong as anything that happens in Muv-Luv Alternative. The other Alternative stories aren't as good, for various reasons. Rain Dancers and Chicken Divers both show new characters, and in both stories nothing really happens. The stories aren't long enough or aren't interested in their characters, so there's no real character arc either that occurs. There's some action that occurs in both, but because there's been no investment into the characters involved it's difficult to care what happens. Inheritance is better, as it follows Michiru's sisters, leaning towards being a more emotional story, and serves as an epilogue of sorts to Confessions. My time with Muv-Luv photonflowers* closely resembled my time with the original trilogy, with me being less able to be invested into stories in the Extra world line and being unable to put down parts of the Alternative world line stories. While some parts of this collection feel superfluous, Muv-Luv fans will find a satisfying read in Atonement and Confessions alone.Show moreShow less

The six Extra prequel stories are entertaining, if forgettable, although the Meiya stories lead one to ask why anybody has any need of giant robots to fight the BETA. The Extra sequel has its moments, although the central conflict is foolish and escalates out of nowhere. On the Alternative side, 'Rain Dancers' is not particularly remarkable... except that the characters (and arguably the author) are so anti-American that when the male lead is gifted some coffee from an American soldier his only response is how bad the American was at brewing it. Which wouldn't stand out, except that it finished a trifecta in a short story that features no American characters at all. The Marimo and Michiru backstories share one glaring problem: the author(s) either don't understand the how and why of basic training, or they think the Imperial Japanese Army is among the most incompetent armed forces ever. The point of basic training is to A) teach the basic things every soldier must know, B) to physically condition the recruits, and C) to socialize the recruits to military life. Sure, the recruiters use the physical stresses of (B) to pursue objective (C); it is, after all, a form of brainwashing. But the objective is to make as many of those recruits soldiers as can be; by the end of basic, most recruits respect what their drill instructors were doing, even if they'll never be friends. Meanwhile, these two stories seem to think that you recruit sadists to torture your new recruits; that if you swear at and beat someone enough you'll magically pop out a soldier at the other end. The Michiru story is even worse, because it takes place after basic, when they're supposed to be in pilot training as cadets. The ultimate breaking point for me was Jinguuji beating a cadet who had collapsed while running. The story is doubtless going to 'explain' that either the beating is for the cadet's own good, or that it'll be better if she never becomes a pilot (never mind the fact that throughout the entire BETA war they've had a pilot shortage). Maybe someday I'll read the rest; right now it just makes me angry, and I just can't see the final two stories changing that.Show moreShow less
