Let me make this quick for you: - It's completely unacceptable to release a multiplayer fighting game in 2023 where you can't play with your friends. - The history mode is the worst of any storm game - The game only adds about 10ish new characters not including the season pass - The game is essentially a dlc for Storm 4 Save your money, buy this when it's on sale for like $20.Show moreShow less

"Online Custom Matchmaking will be implemented post-launch." It's 2023: indie fighting games: have rollback net-code. Naruto: Day 1 release, no private matches. What the....did I just buy an early access game? Edit: 5 hours of playing story. I heard people crying saying, "you didn't give this game a chance". Well, I give it 5 hours and I cleared the History section. I'm gonna finish special story, but after that I'm done until I get private matches and not "patch 1 - added more languages".Show moreShow less
I love that the game is focusing on Boruto wanting to play a video game with his friends, but the game doesn't let us play with our friends. A+ game I've never been happier I have no friendsShow moreShow less
This game is a disgrace to the Storm franchise. It's basically a DLC which adds ~10 new characters to Storm 4 along with Boruto skins for a lot of the cast which they count as "new" characters with out there being anything new added to them. They took away both super kunai throw and tilt attacks without adding any new weapons to a character's arsenal. They essentially took every character's tilt attack and placed it onto the old super kunai throw command so they could say, "Every character has 2 new jutsu!". The original story mode added to this is basically an entire filler arc and you'll spend most of your time watching cutscenes. There are maybe 25 fights total in the entire original story with a bulk of them (20 for sure) being a recap of Naruto's story while Boruto watches through his POV. I volunteered to skip through every cutscene in the story and it still took me roughly 2 hours of loading screens interrupted by a single occasional fight to get though it. YOU CAN'T PLAY as THE NEW ORIGINAL CHARACTERS Nanahsi and Merz. Yea, you don't get to play as the giant red susanoo. They were no cinematic boss fights in the original story also, just a normal fight but they replace the health bar with a boss health bar. I can't speak on the history mode yet but I imagine that's just a collection of fights rather than there being any actual fun to be had in ways of big bosses. There's nothing improved upon graphics wise either and I actually got some stuttering here and there. Don't buy it, just play Storm 4 more. There's nothing of value to be gained from buying this game.Show moreShow less
This review is based off of playing on PC and the Steam Deck. Overview (In-depth analysis below) Naruto X Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections impresses with stunning visuals and the largest character roster yet. It brings refreshing combat refinements to CC2's Storm formula, making it a lively and revitalized experience. However, its letdown comes from a lackluster re-telling of Naruto's journey, a noticeable absence of new and beloved old content, and a notable lack of polish, resulting in an underwhelming product leaving much to desired, making it a tough sell at full price. It's best considered either on sale or if multiplayer is your primary focus and the mechanical changes are to your liking. Positives Negatives - Revamped combat mechanics revitalize all 130 characters and unlock exciting new combo potentials. - The new characters are mechanically and visually intriguing while varied enough to stand out. - The addition of simple controls allows newer players to execute fancy combos. - The Boruto Story is exceptionally well-made, offering an engaging and enjoyable narrative from start to finish. - There's an abundance of collectibles, ranging from skins and color palettes to titles, nameplates, and much more. - Improved Boss fights. - Tons of content from previous games have quietly been removed, resulting in missing costumes, jutsu, and swappable techniques. Additionally, characters like Nanashi and Merc are not playable. - History mode feels like a half-assed attempt to cover Naruto's journey, disregarding several fights and crucial moments from previous games, ultimately resulting in a great story being told poorly and feeling diminished. - Online mode falls short in several aspects: There's no option to leave lobbies, no penalty for ragequitters, and no ability to play with friends. It limits you to casual or ranked matches, lacking other game modes. - The English dub's inconsistency sometimes dips to the point of being outright subpar. PC Specs & Steam Deck Performance PC: i7-9700K, 24GB of RAM, RTX 2080 Ti at 1080p. SD LCD: 60 FPS, ~1.30 hours battery, ~19.8-25.1 W, ~70-80 C at 800p. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3107609227 I experienced two recurring bugs: one during online play, causing random game crashes, and another in History mode where using a Jutsu would sporadically flash part of a PNG or something. Follow Summit Reviews For more insightful and high-quality reviews, or follow my Curator Page, in case you're interested in more Steam Deck orientated reviews. In-Depth Story Embark on two unique tales. Dive into Naruto's saga through History mode, condensing his epic journey from the Chunin Exams to the fourth great ninja war. Experience the emotional highs and intense battles with beautifully animated QTE cinematics, interlaced with anime stills and narration that elaborate on key story moments between each gripping confrontation. However, the condensed storytelling, presentation, and focus primarily on Naruto and Sasuke's perspectives lead to the omission of numerous pivotal moments. This approach undermines various characters and villains, stripping away the narrative's depth and resulting in a subpar experience, lacking the storytelling depth found in previous Storm games. The Special Story mode introduces a game-original narrative focused on characters from the Boruto Next Generation, delivering a new saga within the universe. The story revolves around a mysterious figure called Merz who schemes to manipulate everyone through the use of Engraved Tsukuyomi, aiming to instigate the fifth ninja war and fulfill the ambitious goals reminiscent of Pain's. Boruto and his allies must stop Merz from causing a ninja genocide. While the introduction of technology into the ninja setting and the somewhat limited depth of Boruto Next Generation characters may initially be jarring, but once you get beyond its slow start, the storyline transforms into a truly engaging and compelling narrative that feels like a breath of fresh air, offering new battles, character interactions, and cinematics that fully immerse fans in the vibrant world of Naruto. Gameplay Analysis The combat seamlessly integrates free-flowing movement, flashy jutsu, and strategic thinking. Character skill sets encompass a versatile mix of taijutsu, utilities, jutsu, and ultimate techniques. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3109225234 New Mechanics The core gameplay maintains its Storm foundation charms but with refinement and changes. Notably, Tilts and Charged Shurikens have been removed but superseded by every character having two distinct jutsu instead. Additionally, a bounce mechanic has been added, enabling you to execute more diverse and intricate combos, offering a plethora of new opportunities that were previously unavailable. Chakra recovery is much faster and allows you to utilize your jutsu more freely in combos, eliminating the need for manual charging and making fights feel more dynamic. Parrying also no longer requires chakra, granting you the ability to execute parries freely. These changes might not appear overly impactful, but they do truly reshape the game's dynamics, providing a refreshing overhaul, breathing new life into all 130 characters, and unlocking fresh opportunities and unexplored combo potentials. Whether combining jutsu, supports, or utilities, these adjustments open up a realm of untapped possibilities. Online & Free Battle In the online mode, you can face off against players worldwide in casual or ranked play. However, it's super limited, lacking features such as creating or leaving lobbies, diverse game modes, inviting friends, and penalties for leaving matches. So unless you're into casual matches or climbing leaderboards, there's not much more to explore. Free Battle mode has various local-only game modes such as survival, tournament, practice, and more. These modes offer diverse experiences, from honing your skills to engaging in round-robin style battles or having tournaments with multiple people. Collection The customization options are extensive, offering costumes, skin colors, accessories, and many other miscellaneous goods that are attainable through various means, such as completing story missions, engaging in free battles, or simply buying them using Ryo, the in-game currency earned by playing. Presentation Visuals Visually, Connections stands out as the most visually stunning Storm game, showcasing fluid animations and breathtaking cinematography. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3108114959 However, a significant portion of the story is conveyed through anime stills, some dating back to 2002, creating occasional visual disparities that may seem jarring. The stages are visually captivating, showcasing a wide variety of beautifully designed Japanese architecture and expansive landscapes that reflect pivotal moments from various parts of the story. Audio The background score complements each scene or battles perfectly and occasionally elevates pivotal moments even. The audio effects for Attacks and Jutsu are incredible, particularly in intense action, lending a satisfying sense of impact to each strike. However, the English dub's inconsistency detracts from the experience, diverging from the quality seen in previous Storm games. On the flip side, the Japanese dub matches the exceptional quality of the anime.Show moreShow less
Naruto Storm Connections is a a bit of a let down. The game isn't bad (while some modes like online and Adventure Mode are), its just too bare bones to sell it as a full priced game. Let me explain. What this game adds is a fun Special Story mode, great new fighting mechanics that overhauls the game, which makes it feels fresh and more competitive. But also, only 10 new characters. While the new characters are great, it's the lowest amount any Storm game ever received. Not only are 10 new characters far too few, they held off for some to sell them later as DLC. How do we have Baryon Mode Naruto, but not Isshiki, the enemy he used this form against? To sell it as DLC of course. That would be like Storm 2 having Sage Mode Naruto, but not Pain to sell him as DLC later. But History Mode is just recycled battles from old Storm games, but cut out many iconic ones that don't resolve around Naruto and Sasuke like Jiraiya vs Pain. But they also removed the Storm 3 battle between Naruto and Sasuke for example. And it's got stupid anime slideshows as cutscenes. This mode is just plain bad, and if people start with this mode, they will feel ripped off. So I recommend starting with the new Special Story Mode. Because the new Special Story Mode is actually fun, it's got a decent story. It starts out sluggish, but becomes good later on and actually have animated cutscenes as well. The marketing for this game was truly terrible, because not only did they make it feel like a remaster for many people, they also could've advertised this new mode better. It feels like Boruto enters a weird online mode at first, but it becomes much more than that later on, and I think they could've shown some of that in the marketing too. While the new battle mechanics are awesome, every character now has 2 Jutsus which I like, but they took away tilts and Chakra Shuriken. This is because most old character's tilt moves became their second Jutsu instead of adding new ones for many characters. Itachi truly got 2 Jutsus like Amaterasu and Fireball which is great, but thanks to this, he lost his iconic crow tilt attack. They also removed the option to pick which Jutsus you want to use, and I do hope they'll add this back in. Because for example, Kakashi had access to many Jutsus in Storm 4, which was awesome. Now, it all feels very rushed, because it is. Because you can’t even invite your friends to play online, it’s coming later down the line. How is this acceptable to release a game in this state? Bandai and CC2, you should do better and you know it. And if wasn't finished yet, or you want to implement something cooler for that, I can understand it. But then you should've delayed the game, or just implemented a basic menu so that you can atleast play with friends online. But this all doesn't mean the game is bad, it's just too barebones at launch. Release some free DLC characters like Merz and Nanashi (they were awesome), more Team Ultimates (Team Taka, Itachi and Kisame, Indra and Ashura, etc.) and more stages. Because it's really great we got all the old stages back, but we only got 3 new ones. And of course, fix online invites ASAP. Also, many team ultimates don't work with certain costumes and or character variations. For example, Ino-Shika-Cho's team ultimate don't work in their Boruto outfits, or Team Boruto's team ultimate doesn't work with Karma Boruto's moveset. This is just dumb and it should just work with any character variation/costume. So all in all, I do recommend this game if you didn't play a Naruto Storm game before, or atleast if you didn't own Storm 4. It's the ultimate package, and what's here is great. I can also recommend it in a sale, let's say the Deluxe Edition for €60. Because that's what should've been in the base game. You got over 130 fighters with unique movesets, and also a ton of customization features. But I don't recommend this game if you own Storm 4 (especially if you also got its DLC). While the new story mode, new characters, and updates fighting mechanics are great, it's too barebones at launch. Only 10 new characters and 3 stages feels disappointing, they need to add more as well as more missing team ultimates. History Mode is just bad and recycled, and also because you can't release a fighting game where you can't invite your friends online at launch. Again, this doesn't mean the game is bad, it's just too barebones for a full price game. Bandai and CC2, if you're reading this, you can fix this game, it isn't too late. The Storm franchise is truly awesome, but we deserve better, and just more content for €60. Start by adding Merz and Nanashi, unique story mode stages that aren't in free battle, and more missing team ultimates like I mentioned above for free. Because then, I do recommend this game.Show moreShow less
I just wanted to leave a review here because I know a lot of people are upset about Connections. I picked up the game through a steam key at a lower price--I do agree that the retail price is unjustifiably high--and honestly I've been enjoying it. I understand the complaints that people have, however, I feel that the new gameplay features are actually quite nice for the most part. Losing the tilts does hurt somewhat but I have to ask are they truly needed? It seems like it's just a matter of them being there so long that we've simply gotten used to having them, but if we're being truthful they were clunky and only tactically viable to someone who is highly advanced at the game imo. Some of them lock you into long animations and can be more of a liability than an asset. Those who are newer to the game or not very good at fighting games in general might struggle with even understanding how to utilize tilts properly, so their loss while felt (especially in Itachi's case) is not a huge loss to me. The charged kunai is a similar situation, they are definitely handy but is it not a fair trade to have an entirely new jutsu slot? Having two jutsus instead of one is a HUGE boon, I almost feel spoiled being able to pull out a chidori alongside amaterasu with Akatsuki Sasuke, it is freakin' awesome. Could they have implemented these features better without sacrificing two other unique features? Perhaps. Though there are arguments that can be made against having them in the game in the first place, at the end of the day it's a matter of personal taste. If you can overlook the loss of a couple features, the additions seem to more than make up for it. There does need to be some balancing for the reworks but NUNSC still stands high in terms of its anime style gameplay and the graphical / audio updates are very welcome. One other thing, as a PC player NUNS4 is incredibly finicky on certain graphics cards, so being able to actually play at 60fps with minimal issues is outstanding. I am not making this review to discredit the legitimate complaints about Connections. There are obvious cash grab things happening here; Cyber / Bandai likely want to cash in on Boruto but don't want to invest heavily in an entirely new game, so they pulled a EA Madden on us and essentially gave us a reskin of NUNS4. Still, I really want this game to succeed. It does have potential. I would recommend anyone who doesn't have Connections to either grab a steam key or wait for a sale because it is worth having if you're a Ninja Storm fan.Show moreShow less
