Pretty straight forward small interactive story. I couldn't really call it a game as much as a visual book. Beautiful landscapes, and while based around Lovecraft horror, I found peace on my journey. It has been years since I have sat down and finished something new in one sitting. It will keep you intrigued and going deeper. While it could have been longer, I think it stops at the right time. Very impressive and pretty to look at. Props to the developer.Show moreShow less
Beautiful Artwork, Horrendous Gameplay. As a big fan of Scorn I was looking forward to this game. Unfortunately, this game ended up just being another Agony with beautiful artwork and atrocious gameplay. The experience is repetitive and consists of walking around forever trying to find the right item. I'd recommend just watching the gameplay on Youtube instead of spending money on this game.Show moreShow less
It's an aesthetic. That's what I wanted and that's what I got. I don't get into the weeds about what could be done better. I enjoy what it is, and I want more of itShow moreShow less
I am sorry to break the hype. I really hoped that game would be good. I love the art style and just from the trailer it was truly intriguing. Even if it may be impressive that such a game was created by that few people, this fact is not relevant when playing. The game needs to stand for itself. Below, I sketch my personal opinion about the game. If you find my review overly picky and strict, thats ok. I just describe what I felt when playing the game. Your experience might be totally different. POSITIVE: * The asset design and creature design were truly amazing. * The throat singing chant was great. NEGATIVE: * The soundeffects and voice acting were at the edge of being amateurish. * Immersion is broken by invisible barriers and bad clipping. Graphics and texture resolution seem sometimes from the early HL2 age. * Shadows are really bad or often nonexistent: It looks as if light comes from everywhere. Even underneath stones, overhangs and gaps there is the same lighting as in the open space. * Animations are wooden. Actions are shortcut by letting things just vanish or with blackout transitions. * The texts and monologues attempt to create a feeling of otherwordly awe, but for me it didn't work. I did not understand anything. The lore was convoluted and generic for me. * The gameplay is very shallow. Let me explain: The whole game is divided in very small closed sections. In each section you do the same thing: - You listen to cryptic monologues from statues. - You get a weird object (=key) as a reward for listening. - You walk a few meters and put it into the "key hole". - After doing this usually three times in a section, the door to a new section opens. - Rinse and repeat. * The creatures you encounter are certainly well designed. This is what makes the trailer so intriguing. But as everything in the story stays vague, cryptic and meaningless, the creatures are not filled with life. They look very good but still just pass by and are forgotten after seconds. It rather feels like an exhibition, where you walk from exhibit to exhibit. Some exhibits are interactive, where the visitor can press a button and then a short animation starts. * Considering the very short playtime (~ 2h), the game is actually expensive.Show moreShow less
Necrophosis is probably one of the best Lovecraft-themed games on Steam. The surreal world design is heavily inspired by the works of HR Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński, while the plot is more based on H.P. Lovecraft's typical cosmic horror elements. I wouldn't call Necrophosis a horror game in the typical sense, but rather a walking sim that strongly reminds me of the first two chapters of “Scorn", containing quests and puzzles that guide you deeper into the surreal, destructive world of each chapter. One thing I definitely have to mention is the fact that many people consider the price of 15€ as unjustified. Necrophosis is the project of a solo developer who has put an incredible amount of work into the world design, story and gameplay. I don't think it's fair to measure the price of this game by its playing time. In the end, it's not about how long you play the game, but how much you enjoyed it or how much it affected you. If you think the price of 15€ for 3-4 hours of playtime is too high, try to invest some more time into enjoying the world design instead of rushing from chapter to chapter. I completed Necrophosis in 6 hours (incl. all achievements) and think the price is completely justified. It's definitely a recommend for all lovers of dystopic surrealism, cosmic horror and apocalyptic, morbid settings.Show moreShow less
The biggest problem with this game is the price. It's jsut too expensive for what it is. The best thing and honestly only good thing about this game is the art. The landscapes look amazing. There is no real gameplay, just pick up item and put item somewhere else. There are no puzzles, you dont have to think about anything you do in the game. just pick up every item you find and then try to put it in the place that it needs to be. In most cases you only have 1 option anyway. The voice acting is okay, but the writing is terrible, I didnt know you could put the words: eons, suffering, torment and dead gods in one monologue this many times... It loses all meaning after you hear the same things for the third time and I was just zoning out of the dialogue for most of the game. And although the art and landscapes are great, the animations are often so bad that they are funny, kinda ruining the experience and the immersion. The sound design is almost entirely 'gross' flesh and spider like sounds. Which fits the game, I guess, but it's nothing special. All in all, fun to look around, but way too short and boring in every other aspect for the price they ask.Show moreShow less
The game is a unique experience. The best part of it is the art which is nothing sort of breathtaking considering the fact that everything was made by 1 guy. The game pulls you quickly into its world and you enjoy every minute of it. I very much recommend it for anyone who is a Beksinski fan.Show moreShow less
In Necrophosis you wander through a land where gods have been banished to decay for longer than eternity, full of beautifully rendered grotesque malforms--Necrophosis delivers visually but ultimately fails in most other aspects I thought we'd never see something like Scorn again and i hate to give something this unique and passionate a negative review but it would have been far better suited as an art book or some sort of art installation. As a game it's horribly boring... And I'm a fan of slow walking sims. If the art style peaks your interest, there's definitely some nice scenes for you to look at, but you will get frustrated and bored to the point where they lose their zing. It just doesn't workShow moreShow less
This is the best short lovecraftian-celestial-epic-horror story-walking puzzle game of the year if not even of the last decade. Forget Scorn - this is much much better. What i liked: + the graphics are awesome ! Played on ultra at 1440p on my 4080super without issues. So pretty good optimization. + the music and ambiance are excellent ! + we get DLSS but i played with it off and ran okay with good sharpness/detail. We also get 60/120/144 fps "lock". Also no cursor on the screen for maximum immersion. + the puzzles were alright with one exception. + the story was pretty much okay but what i have seen around.. makes it for any shortcoming... + GREAT EPIC SCENERY ! + very good price for WHAT i have SEEN and experienced ! What i kindof disliked: - there is one "memory" puzzle early in the game with a guy on a table and some worms on his back. Stupid. - (most of the) voice lines should either be re-recorded/modified to be much more tenebrous or just shortened. If i must listen for a god speaking it better be a proper god voice. - instruction text when manipulating stuff is too small on my 1440p screen. Also most of the fonts suck for legibility. - there is a bug where if you die you will be forced to play in blurry vision (devs are aware). Reload the game to solve. Overall 10/10. Good game. Good surprise.Show moreShow less
Devs, show don't tell. This game might be good if you weren't bombarded with overly poetic nonsense non stop. The worst part is that while these characters are inflicting their dark souls fan fic on you, control is taken away from you, so you just have to stand there and take the exposition over and over again. This game is like trying to escape a conversation where the other person can't take the hint that you would like to leave now and stop talking. Do not be fooled by the very cool trailers on the store page.Show moreShow less
