At first it was easier. but then the testers said "This is too difficult." So I made it even more difficult. - Tomonobu Itagaki. Rest in Peace ✝︎Show moreShow less
A great sequel for a MGR game, not at all NG or even close to even what 3RE did. So far I've played through 5 chapters of this game and still not a sign of Ryu to play, but that's besides the point. After the first 2 missions of the game, I began to realize why they designed the game for box arenas. It's because Yakumo literally teleports to enemies when he hits them, and positioning doesn't matter as much at all, and nor does the range of your weapons. I don't know if any of you noticed, but Yakumo has the same exact sliding attack logic as Raiden from MGR, and he has a revenge mode just like Raiden's that instantly dismembers enemies... Okay what about the combos? Well you get Izuna Drop and flying swallow, but those are just singular moves. You have a helm splitter like animation like the other weapons and to perform special moves you must do a button combination of consecutive dual inputs. Things like forward, backward, x or y or R2, A, X, X or Y. and thats kinda it. Yakumo's kit has a lot less going on than any of Ryu's kits from NG1, 2 or RE. I cannot emphasize this enough, all the weapons feel very samey because range and distance do not matter when you always slide to a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ enemy from across the screen, it makes every weapon play and feel the same. This game has regressed in weapon moveset from RE to NG4. While RE was still imo a bad game, it had the most in depth moveset Ryu has ever had, and if anything RE needs a remake for its environment, enemies, and story, but the game has serious potential. This on the other hand feels a lot like Silent Hill F when compared to its original trilogy. It is cosplaying Ninja Gaiden, but the nuance of what made Ryu's moveset very in depth and nuanced is entirely removed for simple button mashing. The bosses are decent, better than the entirety of RE, and most of the bosses in the series but it's not really anything that memorable. I will give credit for two things. This would've been a great Metal Gear Rising sequel, not an NG sequel. The second thing is the parry, dodging, and perfect blocking are all really welcome concepts imo, they have a much more in depth defence system, with sadly too hollow of an offense which makes it feel like a 2.0 of MGR's combat rather than an honest attempt for NG combat. I will not recommend this game if you are looking for a real NG experience, I will recommend this game if you loved MGR and want something that is a large improvement in combat depth to it. Edit: I felt the need to add one more thing for now. The reason why this doesn't feel like a NG game is all directional inputs for normal moves as Yakumo is REMOVED. This mean so many moves of NG are removed from for a pre-existing weapon such as the Lunar. remember how you can twirld the lunar forward like a nunchuck with standing Y in NG2, well thats gone. Remember how forward XXX into Y would stab enemies with Lunar then finish with a heavy, well thats gone too. How about Lunar's rotate Y UT, NOPE. You get an enshitification of one of the weapons that used to be one of the greatest in every NG game. This is one of the biggest gripes with the combat. The devs dumb downed the most perfect fighting game moveset to its barebones husk. Edit 2: Just got to the 3rd zone in the game, it made me realize there is close to no environmental interactions in this. There is so many invisible environmental walls you slide off of. The more I play this game, the more I want to turn it off and play 1 or 2 instead. Edit 3: Ryu has no directional inputs, his moveset is extremely half baked and plays like the Nioh 2 Hayabusa mod with only his katana lol. His moveset is laughably gimped, the developers want you to play Yakumo and like Yakumo more than Ryu by making Yakumo have more tools at his disposal than the person who brought you the original massive weapon arsenal. Ryu also just plays like yakumo, instead of giving Ryu any more weapons, they gave him his ninpo back. This is 100% a game made by and for people who have no clue what Ninja Gaiden is, and clearly mainstreamed for people who only know Sekiro and MGR as any type of action game. Biggest disappointment of the decade for me and this is where I stop playing this imposter. I will not finish this game as the Ryu levels are rehashes of things you've already seen and bosses you've already faced, with an inferior ONE weapon moveset. Absolute L, apparently Platinum Games has no respect for this franchise and only wants to break the fundamentals of what made this series what it is. To the people in the comments defending, and to the people in the reviews and comments, I see you guys with no hours on the game commenting, or any hours on the previous games commenting as well like this game is good. Dont listen to these people, judge the game for yourself, but everything I have said is based in facts and greater detail and I have followed this series my entire life. Edit 4 :): I took a break and beat the game, I won't even bother talking about the ending. There is one last thing I realized about this game and I wasn't wrong when I said it in other forums and this game is just so shallow because of it, as a general action game not even Ninja Gaiden. This is the gameplay loop for actually beating the game as it forces you to play in very safe and uninteresting ways on harder difficulties. As Yakumo you will do 1 air swipe move for ground enemies with blades, then on the ground you will do X,X,X or just X,X. You will reposition to do an izuna drop if nobody is nearby. And NEVER ever go into the air by accident or you will die, which there are plenty of moves that Yakumo LOVES to launch himself in the air. Essentially half the entire games combat flow is worthless because you will get jumped on in a situation where you do go in the air for anything other than an izuna drop when spaced correctly. Obliteration Techniques are also pressed with Y, and if by chance you accidently press Y during an X combo and it isn't the right delimbed enemy you will go in the air and if others are around you, you are dead. It's not very well thought out, and without my hatred in this edit as it is already known to not be a Ninja Gaiden game, it's a flawed action action where doing anything in the air which Yakumo has plenty of moves that launch people will get you killed, excluding Izuna Drops that give I-frames when coming down. This is the offense in a nutshell for multi enemy encounters. Oh and UT spam whenever you can because the damage you take on MN is typically a 1 or 2 shot for that 2-step Sekiro combat Experience unlike any of the previous NG titles.Show moreShow less
Rest in Peace TOMONOBU ITAGAKI-SAN!!!!!!! I will always love and respect you for bringing us such incredible games, without your vision we would not have this today. HERE IS THE REVIEW 4 HOURS INTO THE GAME SO FAR: The game is very good, the combat feels great, and it is challenging but oh so fun to slash through your enemies and the executions look fantastic with a enough variety to each of them to get you jazzed for the next kill. I like the aesthetic, the music is great, I believe they got the same band that did one of the DMC 5(DEVIL MAY CRY) songs to do a song for this game but all the songs have been solid to listen to so far. The new character is very cool, I haven't gotten to play RYU yet but been enjoying this new character which is something I am happy about since it was something I was worried about since you play Ryu in all the other games but i've grown to like this new character "Yakumo". I really been liking this game so far. I think If you are an OG fan of Ninja Gaiden, enjoy ninjas, or enjoy "Metal Gear Rising Revegeance" you'll enjoy this game! I wont know how I fully feel till I complete the game but so far I am loving it.Show moreShow less
Finally finished Hard Mode and wanted to review this game because I seriously didn’t want to review it before finishing it. It’s because 90% of the reviews I saw were very bad, or the reviewers were just posting the famous Tomonobu Itagaki quote. I really, really want to know why people use Itagaki’s quote for this game since he didn’t work on it and wasn’t even interested. Itagaki was mostly active on Facebook, and when NG4 was announced, people sent the trailer to him and he completely ignored it. He even liked my post about how the OG 360 NG II was superior compared to NG II Black. People are seriously milking his death for a few Steam Award points. Please stop this, it’s not even worth it. If you need that many Steam rewards, send me a message and I’ll send them to you. 2 - I really want to know how people can say “This is the best Ninja Gaiden game ever made,” because it’s not. This game is not even feels like Ninja Gaiden. It's average Platinum games with NG title. The weapon variety in this game is extremely low. Like, forget Ryu, even Yakumo has very few weapons. We used to laugh at Ninja Gaiden 3 / Razor’s Edge… but what is this, really? Also, bosses are so damn bad. They are mixed between MGR and Nioh. Zero creativity. Like compared to the previous games, the bosses here are just boring. And then you fight them again when you play as Ryu! That’s double lame! 3 - Ninja Gaiden = Ryu Hayabusa. Say whatever you want. Like, Yakumo is cool? Ehhh. But again, who needs him when we had Hayate? You don’t like Hayate? Then at least use Kenji! If this game was 80% Ryu and 20% Yakumo, I really wouldn’t have any problem! 4- Remember when you beat the Master Ninja mode and game was rewarding you some cool outfit? Well that is completely gone! I beat the MN and reward is nothing. Like ffs content in this game is almost zero Apart from these things, I think this is an okay game. The combat is smooth and fast. Blood Raven mode is good. But I hate how camera keep changes the target. The game is still hard, which is perfect but it's not impossible. I like the futuristic Tokyo, but the traditional Japan areas are still the best! I never use English voices in NG games, always Japanese, because Ryu’s voice actor has been the same guy since 2004, Hideyuki Hori-san! I can’t even imagine a Ninja Gaiden game without him… TWAAAAH (no one can do better than him) Final Words: I’ll judge this game again when the “Two Masters” DLC comes out... Oh yeah, DLC. They actually announced that DLC before the game came out. You know why? Because fans were really angry when they heard Ryu only has one weapon. I think this game has crazy potential to be really good, but I don’t recommend just now because how both character have limited weapon. Ryu is stronger than ever and incredibly cool—but after a few minutes of playing him, I get bored because, as I said, he only has one weapon. Hope DLC won't disappoint usShow moreShow less
NINJA GAIDEN 4 is a game you will never see in the next ten years. I guess this will be the last of high speed ACT. Everyone is into soul like games which are lazy in action and move set design. The last glory of NG series. Shout-out to platinum game and xbox studio willing to make a NG4 even it is unlikely to profit. Please support NG4Show moreShow less
Most of my playtime was on gamepass, transferring over to here because of the DLC. Ninja Gaiden 4 is a fun game. It plays unlike other action games on the market despite having a hot pot of modern mechanics, its fast, visceral, and relies heavily on your multi tasking abilities to feel powerful rather than just giving it to you. Mastery is here in spades and there's several advanced tricks to learn despite the simplified movesets from previous games. There is unquestionably a lot of mechanical skill and satisfaction. However, the game feels sloppy. A thousand different bugs and weird physics affect the quality of this game and while its not that big of a problem on hard and below, it is a massive problem when you're doing master ninja and you start noticing when your targeting decides to screw off to another direction you weren't facing, or your ultimate technique flies off to a different direction, or your parry didn't register, or your finisher locks your camera so you get immediately clipped by an enemy you didn't see and..... well, you get it. A thousand clumsy cuts fill this game and it doesn't feel like platinum or team ninja put their all into it. Platinum especially ironed out so many common inconveniences like this in all their previous games, and it baffles me that they put something out like this. Please do not get this for full price. It has nowhere near the replayability or polish of a game like DMC5. Dunno where to put this but the DLC is really whatever. It’s like an hour of story which amounts to “fight a guy” and then bloody palace and a handful of extra hard challenge missions. The new weapons kinda just appear in the inventory and they’re incredibly busted. Half of it could’ve been a free update and the rest feels maybe worth it for $5, not $15 or $20. The gameplay is mostly going to be new. Arenas are huge compared to past titles and your movesets focus on making and crossing a lot of space. New annoying hyper armor attacks have to be either dodged or broken by your new blood gauge mechanic, which does gradually get easier to manage because of a new accessory system that gives some bonus buffs. Your most powerful offense is often mastering parries and perfect blocks to get the powerful counter attack that decapitates enemies. Sometimes it is rewarding to learn these enemies, but most of the time it isn't. A lot of enemies in this game either have extremely fast windups or do some variation of lunging, wide sweeping attack to compensate not having the same number of enemies on screen. The difficulty in this game comes less from not managing numbers and being swarmed, but from every enemy just doing massive damage if you ever *do* get clipped. It feels kinda cheap when you bump it up because you'll mostly notice that all the stats increase rather than anything new. Yakumo I did grow into liking his gameplay, mostly because Ryu is a lot more boring in this game due to his lack of weaponry and his replacement mostly being overpowered instant kill regenerating magic, because that's always engaging to do... The environments are solid, but lacking in numbers. There's maybe a third of the locations of a ninja gaiden game and you really start to get sick of spending over 3 hours in the same place. Especially because the whole game takes place in darker areas. The missions feel padded out to come up with several "oops, something set you back!" moments just to justify a longer run time and it gets really irritating. It gets especially bad when Ryu only gets to rehash the levels in exactly the same way as DMC4, a game notorious for being like 60% complete. Where's NG4's excuse? The music is good, but not super outstanding besides the first boss. It's only really serviceable, or in the case of a fight like Kagachi, seems out of place considering the two characters have exchanged less than twenty words with each other to suddenly have a melodramatic ideal clash. The story is my most despised aspect of the game. "Oh, but the story is always bad, you can't complain about it being bad again!" The story in the other games was *boring.* Standard, but worked. Didn't try to expand too much, just good guy has to fight the evil guys. Nothing's really wrong with that setup. Ninja Gaiden 3 wasn't bad for trying to reach out more, it was bad because the premise was awful for the characters and didn't work. Ninja Gaiden 4's setup is that a guy trained to be a mercenary for the dark web that is simultaneously only known by the hayabusas yet is also so infamous people pay top dollar for him constantly, is the only one who can kill the dragon that Ryu could eat for breakfast. Yakumo murders the DDO, the new PMC group herded by Ryu himself, in scores at a time, when their biggest crime is not letting people unseal Satan. Even the in game biography says that at most they're kinda just mean to civilians in a *state of emergency.* Ryu lets Yakumo tear through all these guys for.... nothing, I guess. It's extremely out of character for Ryu to go "yes you can tear through a couple hundred of my guys to prove you can fight the dragon." Ryu even recites the prophecy that only Yakumo can defeat the dark dragon, so he KNOWS, but can't think of any other plan that doesn't involve just murdering anything in their path. Even after all that, Ryu decides to just wait and see if Yakumo can beat the dragon, instead of doing anything to help. They somehow made ninja jesus himself a door mat. Yaiba made this guy more hype than this game. Yakumo's own master, a character who doesn't even get to show up in cutscenes, even accosts Yakumo at one point that the DDO aren't even all that bad. So you play as an objectively evil guy who is justifying himself by saying they're in the way of him ending the dark dragon for good, yet the game still tries to play up a parallel between him and ninja gaiden black where ryu has to accept doing bad things for good reasons. Except Ryu sticks to that. Yakumo continues to murder the DDO and work for the dark web regardless lol. Ayane, who shows up for 50 seconds, also gets character assassinated because she was told to watch Yakumo the whole game. So her with her traumatic past doesn't stop Yakumo from slaughtering these guys either. Everything just lacks any thought and feels as bad as ninja gaiden 3's plot was. As in, so bad that it actively makes the other games worse despite them not having an in depth story either. This is just the tip of the iceberg, but I wanted to highlight how much I could talk about the basic premise being screwed, let alone how it affects the setting. "Hype moments and aura the story" where? ALL of the cutscenes are standing around and talking. This is the most plain story ever in a platinum game which are known for insanely wacky yet endearing stories. Every action game like this has more engaging scenes or memorable moments. NG4 is just a haze. Overall the game feels very in one ear and out the other. It's fun to play if you turn your brain off on lower difficulties, annoying to play before you master the mechanics for master ninja, irritating when you encounter the bugs, and ironically braindead once you figure out how many exploits you can do. The game could've offered so much more, but instead feels like a budget game by fans rather than the only experts left in the industry.Show moreShow less
This might be the best combat system in any action game I've ever played. Don't want to play it? Ninja pleaseShow moreShow less
Bought this game and they broke it a week after I purchased it. I have an ultra wide monitor and it will not display correctly anymore. No communication from team ninja about fixing this issue. Also, can’t get a refund from steam because they’re fine with developers breaking a game after you buy it. edit: The latest patch does fix the issues with the display I was having. While I wish I didn't have to wait more than month for this fix (especially after forgetting how to play the game since it was so long) I appreciate that at least the issue was addressed.Show moreShow less
