Sum-Up In-depth analysis further down. Follow our Curator page, Summit Reviews, to see more high-quality reviews regularly. 🟩 Pros 🟥 Cons - Good variety of crops, animals, decorations and machinery to find, build and research. - Decent amount of total content for the proposed price. - Boring gameplay loop without enough side activities or variety to keep it fresh. - Total absence of any NPC relationship / trust systems. - Annoying farm management due to quality-of-life oversights and limited features. - Unpolished and prone-to-bugs; plays like an Early Beta rather than a 1.0 release in many ways. - Dated visuals and lackluster effects / animations - even for an Indie title. 🟨 Bugs & Issues 🔧 Specs - Quests may irreparably break. Autosave only means no backups if it happens. - UI / Icons look rather grainy on 1440p and above resolutions, possible scaling issues. - Lack of official controller support. - Performance drops in some areas even with a high-end machine. - 3900X - 2080Ti - 32GB RAM - SSD - 1440p Content & Replay Value: Depending on completion rate, I'd say it takes anywhere between 20 to 30 hours to complete NPLH. I was unable to finish the story due to the main quest irreparably breaking, thus barring me from the final area 25 hours in. The content is completely linear, no reason to replay whatsoever. Is it worth buying? No. This game has too many blunders, rough edges and design oversights to prove an enjoyable experience. The price of around 17€ is reasonable for this content amount, however this doesn't matter when all the other issues come into play. Verdict: Bad Rating Chart Here An insipid, soulless, generic farming sim that, despite years in Early Access, is still far from the quality standards of a full release. The dull content, boring lore and multiple design oversights deliver the final blow. Move on to better titles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2782635004 In-Depth Humanity Ruined Earth... Shocking! In NPLH you'll play as Ellen, an aspiring Mars colonist that decides to go back to an ecologically-ruined Earth and start a new life, trying to set things right instead of abandoning the planet, alongside her grandfather. Turns out the old man disappeared, so you'll have to help out the few locals that chose staying behind like him, and understand what happened to him. Heaps of trash and crazed robots dominate most landscapes, a result of mankind's outrageous conduct; despite the premise, the settings aren't bleak at all between cute animals (sometimes sentient, for a dash of fantasy...) and bright colors. If this is the post-apocalypse, it doesn't look too grim; lore and writing feel rather generic, as none of the characters or quests will stick in your mind or really hook players at any point - mostly uneventful. A Woman of Many Talents You'll be doing mainly two things in this title: clearing each area from trash using your industrial drills and vacuum, and manage the farm. Despite the biome variations, each area plays out exactly in the same way: (slowly) clear trash, collect everything that drops, open chests, push buttons to open gates, bash robots that attack you... always the same two types, slow, weak, badly animated and with death having no penalty whatsoever. There's no variety, be it in the first or last areas, except the occasional timed buttons or mini puzzle: highly-unusual findings. Quests for NPCs mainly consist in gathering X amount of a resource, going from point A to point B or helping X amount of animals by feeding or herding them - also in this case, missions feel too similar and have no interesting variations at any point. A good number of upgrades like increased vacuum range, drills potency, etc. can be purchased using Preserved Food (currency) alongside specific resources (mostly farm products) - they're marginal improvements that aren't really needed given how miserable enemies are; they won't make the cleaning ops much faster either, except when they allow breaking harder mounds of trash, which is mandatory to progress past some areas. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2782502164 No Time For Friends, Sigma Grindset Engaged! Most farming sims have relations or even romance options with the various characters, other than activities to do alongside them; let's take the famous Stardew Valley, or My Time at Portia as references, to name a couple. Here there is none of that: NPCs act as glorified, static quest "dispensers" with some random dialogue options for lore's sake, and integrated shops for new machines / facilities for the farm. This completely cuts out any attachment the player may hope to develop towards the characters, and makes the story as a whole, a glorified series of chores. The Painful Life of Post-Apocalypse Farmers While it's initially satisfying to set up your own farm freely, or renovating gramps' old house with furniture, wall paper and other amenities, soon the farming side of things will take an annoying, bleak turn indeed. with the locations divided in "compartments" instead of a smooth open-world, you'll end up without space for facilities end crops, thus develop your farm over several "sections" of the world with a loading screen between each. The normal quality-of-life basic systems such as auto-sorting or auto-stacking are absent, chests can't be marked or named, animals clip into each other and have to be manually harvested for resources - very fun when you have 45 chickens and 30 pigs in five square meters. This all amounts to a tremendous slog of fidgeting with interfaces half the time, misclicks and general annoyance. The farm isn't even that engaging to take care of: crops won't die if you forget to water them, rather not grow. Animals are self-feeding and immortal; automatic systems to water everything are unlocked soon enough, so you can stay away for days without caring, and just go back to dump loot when your backpack is full. Cooking is completely useless, as processing raw materials is just faster to gain Preserved Food, while Trash to recycle is ever-abundant - you won't need the various buffs (speed, damage etc.) food gives anyway, given how easy combat is. The various Tier 2 and 3 machines, expensive and locked behind blueprints, are just redundant and not worth the hassle, as you can build five Tier 1 machines, recyclers to name one, and get the same (or better in some cases) efficiency for half the total cost. Once you set up fields, facilities and everything, even just Tier 1, you are already as good as done with the farm, no more meaningful evolution from that point onward... just redundancies. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2783504114 All The Wrong Choices Led to This You can see the lines between the various "tiles" that compose the map. Fall through the map itself at times, get stuck in collisions and have to fast-travel back to fix yourself. Animations? What are those? Better make that gate just disappear as soon as the button is pressed, same for huge blocks of ice, boulders or you-name-it. Break enough trash in an area and see your FPS plummet even with a high-end GPU, as each bit of trash is a standalone physics-enabled object, all with Playstation 2-era graphics, amazing! Did I mention the main quest broke permanently, barring me from finishing the game? Yeah, that should give you the idea of this "1.0" release's state.Show moreShow less
Enjoying the game - start over frequently to try to get new ideas on how best to play efficiently. I did play through the last version once without any of the animals so not really certain what the purpose of them are but then again I may not have played the game correctly. (I'm 81). I am looking forward to the next patch and will continue to play the game. ***Huge problem with me is the shadows. I can not see the towers of garbage when they are in the dark shadows especially against the fences or under trees. Would be nice if we could turn off shadows or at least improve the contrast considerably. I hate just going around swinging the tools trying to find the towers of dirt. ThanksShow moreShow less
Like a few other reviewers, I made sure to complete the game with as many (possible) achievements before publicly commenting. I wanted to like the game. I liked the premise. I bought it when it still had "Very Positive" reviews, but that has dropped to "Mixed" since. Unfortunately, this game is suffering in multiple key areas. -The game is very buggy. Some of the bugs are minor inconveniences. Some are game breaking. Some quests and achievements are impossible to complete because of these bugs. -The graphics need serious help. I also got stuck in areas I shouldn't have gotten stuck in multiple times. I was grateful for the "save and go home" button. -You grind. And grind. And grind. You complete a quest annnd-- your reward is typically borderline useless/obsolete by that point. -There are several (as of 30 July 2022) pointless items to farm/produce or otherwise collect. They serve no purpose other than to confuse, at this point. -You do not "make friends"; there are a half-dozen NPCs whose (awkward) dialog never changes from the time you meet them. For some reason, two of these NPCs set up shop in multiple locales on the map long *after* you have unlocked fast travel doors and other means of quick travel, rendering this convenience, again, useless. Just, 2 or 3 more NPCs who aren't yelling at you to save one particular animal would be nice. -Your farm is not particularly large for all of the animals and robots you can rescue (not to mention the farming and crafting you need to do) and once you start rescuing them, the game stutters (plenty of other players have noted this.) -The animal housing is also a cluster. If you put it too close to the boundaries of your farm, the animals will just congregate in a pocket dimension between the building the boundary. You can't get them to leave, and you can't collect resources from them. If you have other animals running around, you will have a difficult time picking up that housing and moving it, because a building can't be place where an animal is. The animals can't be herded or lured. You just have to wait and pray that a valid spot large enough opens up. Then you have the pleasure of re-befriending the animals who lived in that housing. Moving a house means they don't live in it anymore. That is an awful design all around. The farm is too small, too chaotic, and not forgiving enough of things needing to be moved. -In general, the game is just a repetitive and boring grind. You unlock a new biome and repeat exactly what you did in the last three. -The grand finale is also nonsense, and is over before you even know it's begun. I really wanted it to get better. I wanted the things that didn't make sense to make sense if I kept playing, but they just didn't. Nothing about the game is engrossing, challenging (except for patience), or well written. The positive is, it's a nice message, to care for the Earth we have. It's sweet to be able to rescue animals both wild and domesticated, name them, and in some cases give them a limited variety of cute hats. Some of the animals dance. If you're easily charmed by that kind of thing, you will at least enjoy that aspect of the game.Show moreShow less
It's a conditional yes. The previous beta iteration was excellent but needed a bit of tweaking. This new pre- release overhaul has become a childrens game. The underground maze has been closed off probably because they couldn't figure out how to put down line markings and a chart on the floor or walls to show different shortcut exits out of the maze after they were discovered. All the great puzzles are missing, the games been dumbed down so much I can really only recommend it for 5-13 year olds. If you like something simple that your children can play and you can waste some time on, this is it. Full of cute chicken hat and wow references and super easy to play. The story isn't particularly interesting. The tutorial though is excellent and visual cues teach the player the controls nicely. The graphics are cute but can be a cause of motion sickness for some. The premise: Earth is a polluted mess and you've returned from Mars to your grandfathers farm. He's missing and you need to find him. You need to vacuum up mounds of garbage, learn to make increasingly better patterns and upgrades for your tools. You need to trade preserves which you make and it can be a lot, 250 in some cases plus produce you grow to purchase patterns for building farm animal houses, bee hives and many other things. There are quests to fulfill that don't actually give you any rewards, but you can confidently ticked them off you list as you finish them and eventually find grandfather and solve the mystery of his disappearance. The vac pal that you arrive with is your main tool for clearing garbage. You are going to put that thing to very good use; killing bots with water or drilling them to death. Breaking up stone, glass and rubber and sucking up the results to turn into building materials. You have a home you can open up and decorate. Every area is instanced off and you have to complete the main story line to access the next area. I personally am disappointed. The devs said they had listened to feedback, but I can't believe this is what the player wanted unless they were aiming for it to be a children's game and nothing wrong with that. There are plenty of great kids games out there that adults can enjoy as well. I simply miss the original beta ideas because they were great, challenging but not obscenely so. The shortcut maze made for a longer game and trying to remember which passage led to which area was part of the charm. Combat has always been simple but then combat is not the main thrust of this game; simple combat is hard to come by these days and appreciated by many. I recommend it a a family/childrens game. There's not as much in the game as there was but I am sure the devs will continue to add content over time.Show moreShow less
First 5 hours was great. Drilling and vacuuming garbage was oddly satisfying. Learning to unlock recipes, crops and livestock was fun. 14 hours in I wanted to smash my head on a wall till I lost consciousness from having to continue playing this game ;-; Pros: - Unique way of collecting resources by drilling and vacuuming up trash - Currency is food a player has to cook from crops and livestock resources - Has NPC you meet as you explore to teach you new recipes - Relaxing game music Cons: - Game freezes randomly - Game gets laggy even on low settings - No camera zoom in or out. If you plant trees they'll obstruct your view A LOT! - No first person for those who prefer that mode - Tutorial is on a tacky wooden board signs with a ton of misspellings, most likely due to size of board giving devs character limits - Character and livestock often get stuck - Invisible walls in some livestock coops, making it hard to interact with animals - "Dungeons" are a puzzle which is fun, but not when you end up unlocking a door that leads to an area you've already cleared - Day cycle too short. One Game Day is roughly 10 minutes of real time and this just feels too short to get all chores done and explore before being forced to pass out. A slider to lengthen the amount of real time you get for a single day would make this feel a lot better. - You have to choose what to do in a day: take care of crops, livestock and resource machines or ignore your farm and go out exploring/dungeon crawl as there won't be enough time in an ingame day to do both. - Getting from point A to point B will take most of your ingame day - There is no sprinting, jumping or mounts - Setting up tent locations for your character to respawn at is static on game map. You will not be able to put a tent anywhere you please. - You spawn at the nearest tent (or farmhouse if no tents have been made) after death or after passing out at bedtime 22:00hr. No way to pick which waypoint to spawn from. Game has potential but needs a lot of work.Show moreShow less
First impressions If you enjoyed My time at Portia, you will find something to like here. The game mechanic of vacuum/watering is fun and easy. As is bashing stuff/robots. Crops and cooking allow some cool game progression. My first impressions are I want to play more. At the low price it is a must buy. Looking at the road map, this could be a real bargain and a great fun game. 8 hours game play Look beyond the few annoying bugs, most notably machines not working after a save. My solution is to clear all before saving. They will all be ready to work again, when you return. The exploration in this game is wonderful, a lot more than I discovered on my first play though. I have a feeling this is going to be one of the great games of 2021.Show moreShow less
Guys, this game is cute. I enjoy the core gameplay quite a lot. But the thing that kills it, and the thing that seems to kill 90% of these types of games? INVENTORY MANAGEMENT. Stacks are absurdly small and variable, and because of the game's central gameplay loop, you're picking up hundreds, sometimes THOUSANDS of items before returning to base. Field squares? Stacks of ten. Food? Stacks of ten. Seeds? Stacks of 50. Barely a third of the way through the game I'm having to juggle a dozen treasure chests. Just, for the love of god, make the stacks 999. Please. Please just do this. It will instantly remove 75% of the tedium from this game right off the bat. It killed Graveyard Keeper for me, it killed this, it killed a dozen indie farm-em-ups. PLEASE JUST MAKE STACKS REASONABLEShow moreShow less
No Place like Home OKAY. I like this game! Let me make that clear. I plan to play MORE! BUT IT IS very, VERY VERY EARLY in development! This game starts out with the most BASIC tutorial ever - to the point where I didn't even know it was a tutorial - I walked forward and realised 'wait a minute'. After that, the controls started to kind of make sense, so I was able to play quite a bit afterwards! But let me tell you some things I learned in my first two hours: About: This game has an amazing idea. I love it, it's not super original but it's fun! You start on a farm which needs rebuilding. It's absolutely covered in TRASH. The earth is covered in trash and it's up to you to clean it up. This consists of 'breaking' trash blocks, and sucking up the pizza boxes, empty water bottles, bin bags, all of it, with your vacuum. The vacuum has a big range, so actually it can suck up things easily, no effort really. Then you put what you've sucked up into a machine (you can buy loads of them) to recycle the parts into pieces you can use to build. The machines take time, so I really recommend building a few to get yourself going. Cool Things: - Farming! The farming is super easy. You break trash, sometimes you find seeds buried there, you plant em, water them super quickly, (like, within a few seconds you can water your field of 30+ plants), and then either make the crops into food, or use them to trade with your animals for items (see below). - Ranching! Ranching is exactly what it is. I cleared space in my yard/farm area, and made a chicken coop, and tamed a few wild chickens. They really like potatoes, and I had an abundance of them. Each day a chicken will give you an egg if you give them a potato in exchange. They also hang around wherever you put the coop. There are also other animals, like cats, dogs, pigs, and robots. - Robot Ranching! This part is like, not as cool? But still cool. It's a cool idea, it just needs expanding on. You can find wild robots that aren't ...evil ... buried in the trash, once you help them out, you can choose to take them home by giving them some batteries. Like chickens, they are 1 battery per ...however long. It may be one per day, or one per week, I didn't actually see. Batteries come from fighting bad robots, so I'm a bit worried I will run out to be honest. But robots give you 50 recycled parts at the cost of 1 battery, so it seems like a good trade, if the batteries are easy to come by? I'm not sure yet. - Easy to get other crops & water: Watering your plants is easy, you can just suck up water from anywhere with your vacuum, even through fences, which I'm not sure the developer was going for, but I love it. I'm super lazy, so that works for me. Crops are the same. You don't buy them from the shop. You find seeds in the trash. Mostly. You can also feed birds a potato to get potato seeds. I'd like to see this made into any seed, or feed them 1 (x) for 1 (x) seed, etc. You can also suck these up through fences lol. Not Great Things: Take these with a grain of salt. This is just a part of being early development. I'm sure these will be fixed/added. (Er, I am HOPING the developer will see these reviews and be able to fix/add these concepts!) - No controller support. This is hit and miss. I'm able to play with my keyboard, but when I see games like this, I automatically assume I can use my controller. I plug my pc in, and for some reason I AM able to walk around! But it doesn't work if I try and use actions. - Watering plants is a hit and miss, literally: I can't figure out what I'm doing. I just spray chaotically and hope I hit a potato. This works, but I want it to be easier. I'd like a constant spray instead maybe. Yeah I'd run out of water sometime but I have no idea what I'm doing most mornings. Watering/washing animals is my least favourite thing to do. - The characters are all the same: lol, this is ...uh, placeholders, right? Probably. So don't worry too much here. The shop holder is the same as the guy you meet in the tutorial/outside your house, haha. - I hate using 0-9 on my top keys to do things: I am 100% already using a keyboard, please allow numpad support for this. Pressing 5 on my numpad is much faster than pressing 5 on the top for me. This is obvs. a preference. - Rotating doesnt make sense: So actions are 'E'. I am putting down my kitchen/chicken coop/ whatever building, and I struggled to find how to rotate anything. It's not , or . It's not < or >, or [ or ]. What could it be? Oh, after going back to tutorial, I find out it's E. That was terrifying because I was worried I place it facing backwards. Does this make sense? Why is E the action button, but also rotate?Show moreShow less
This game is a concept I've been wanting for a while. The world around you is in shambles and it's up to you to put it back together and make things right. Not to mention the vacpac feature and cute farm mechanics reminding me of Slime Rancher and Stardew Valley, some of my favorite games. It's too bad that this game was released out of early access way too soon. To begin, the bugs- they're everywhere. The apparent ease to get to parts of the map clearly never meant for player eyes, the constantly disappearing items and broken quests, the animals clipping into objects and sometimes through the world itself never to be seen again, etc. etc. Then there's the typos in every other spoken/written sentence. I'm unsure if this game was translated from a different language, but I'm talking typos that even the most basic of spellchecks would catch and tell you to correct. And lastly but certainly not the least is the ending. What a joke. This game has soooo much potential, but it feels far too rushed out of early access to warrant a positive review. I've been watching this game for a while because I only like playing games once they're in full access, but it's really disappointing to see what they deemed complete enough to release. It could've been great, and it still can be, but I play games mainly for their achievements and I only have one left (that's possibly bugged, imagine that). Hopefully when I look back on this game in a year or so it'll be held together with more than spaghetti code and duct tape.Show moreShow less
