I downloaded this as a torrent and enjoyed it a lot. Please don't forget to buy games that you pirated when you like them and can afford it. The devs go through a lot to make them.Show moreShow less
Falls into a fairly common roguelite trap: the core gameplay is just not very interesting. So a lot of the fun comes from coming up with different crazy builds, and seeing what else you can do. However, 90% of the time will be spent doing something else: grinding out the super mods you need (and it's quite a grind!), bumbling past the early-game to get your build going, retrying a couple of times when you got unlucky, etc. And even once you get a powerful build going... there's little decision-making or skill expression left in the game. You keep doing whatever you're supposed to be doing, and at some point the enemies just out-scale you and you die. The game's got breadth, but little depth. It's early access, so maybe that'll change - but at the end of the day, if you're going to be building on Asteroids, you've got a LOT of building ahead of you.Show moreShow less
I don't like Path of Exile. You might wonder why I even mention this, given the game I'm reviewing is Nova Drift. Well, the problem I have with Path of Exile is that it's a game with a massive skill tree which exclaims "experiment with me!" and then proceeds to make rerolling and respeccing your skill tree as obnoxious, slow, and annoying as possible. This brings me to Nova Drift. Here we have a game where the entire point of the game is trying to theorycraft awesome builds capable of breaking the game's balance, allowing you to make an overpowered spaceship capable of tearing through endless waves of enemies. The difference is, because it takes SO long to make a new build in Path of Exile, the game becomes tedious and grindy, whereas in Nova Drift, combining all these awesome skills together to make a fun build for your spaceship takes you only about thirty minutes of experimentation. The two games are completely different, but their underlying nature is the same. This is why I consider Nova Drift a wild success. The game has one singular point and it has refined that point to perfection. Nothing else I've played has come close to nailing this try-out-different-builds functionality in such a smooth and well-balanced manner as Nova Drift. If you guys buy this game, make sure to go to the Developer's Discord and join the experimental branch. You'll get a new update for the game every few days, each one reworking stuff in new and fun ways. It ensures the game never gets stale. Chimeric has been working on Nova Drift for over five years, and he's in it for the long haul. https://discord.gg/Zp2MkPJ Trust me, you don't want to miss out on this one if you enjoy spaceship shooters. 10/10, it's a mastapeece, baybey!Show moreShow less
Love the concept, hate the controls.Show moreShow less
I've been playing this a little every day (sometimes a lot), and it has become a little part of my daily routine. My PC runs on my living room TV, and when my kids wake up at the outrageous hour of five-ish, I can relax and chat with them while playing. Most of the time. This game is totally family-friendly, encourages learning and creative thinking, is visually impressive, exciting, and is just the right amount of challenging. My six and eight-year-olds are constantly asking for a turn, which I allowed early on since they never took long. Unfortunately, their turns are getting longer and longer as they come up with good builds of their own. They have even taken to suggesting upgrades while they watch me, often pointing toward a route to a super-mod that they think would work well. Outrageous. My three-year-old will start chiming in any day now... I always play on maximum difficulty, and often come up with an idea for a build that I'm so sure will work that I run it ten times just to make it through the first few waves and prove that it could work. When your build idea starts coming together and working, there is an incredible sense of satisfaction. I even find myself having ideas for builds pop into my mind as I go through my day. Don't tell my wife. The developer has dedicated a ton of work and time to Nova Drift, has continued to improve the game, listens to suggestions, and has an active community of support. Though still in early access, the game is extremely playable, and does not present as being particularly incomplete. If there were never any new features added or changes made, I would still be perfectly satisfied with what I have, and well worth its price. In fact, now that I think of it, this game may be the best value for money of any game I've ever played. Nova Drift is a phenomenal feat of creativity and skill, and is a thoroughly enjoyable and re-playable game that can be a relaxing casual with a simple and effective build, or you can turn it up to 11 in a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, nail-biting, running-backwards-blindfolded-while-smoking-in-the-fireworks-factory, click-first-blink-later mayhem festival. Recommended by 100% of the world's zero gravity interstellar combat violinists who, in their official statement, declared Nova Drift to be both 'Historically accurate' and 'Extremely groovy.' Give it a shot; you'll see.Show moreShow less
Refunded because of thrust controlls. Concept, sounds and visuals are great tho. This game is not bad, just not for me.Show moreShow less
Nova Drift is a asteroids style score game of epic proportions. Pilot your bio-mechanical ship through scaling waves of enemies to earn EXP (score). Choose from branching upgrade trees to customize your ship shields, weapon, drones and mobility features. With a huge amount of ships and upgrades to choose from the variety of game play experiences is amazing. I'm writing this just a few weeks before 1.0 releases, having been a player for 3.5 years now I can say this game is easily the best in class. No other score based shooter game comes close to the level of depth, variety and enjoyment it provides. Make no mistake, this game is difficult to get good at. The control scheme takes practice, but is extremely rewarding to master. Unlike a twin-stick shooter you control your thrust and momentum with have the ability to screen wrap top to bottom, and left to right. In the time I have played the game the developer has continued to improve every aspect of the game, it is unbelievable how robust and complete this game is after a almost 10 year development cycle. Do yourself a favor and pick this game up immediately.Show moreShow less
Am I playing this game wrong? First some background: I'm an old-school retro gamer. Grew up on coin-op classics and score chasers. A lot of Asteroids under my belt. I see this game and think "Hey, I love Asteroids and rogue-likes seem like a cool addition" After my first go (which took like 20 minutes?) I'm constantly interrupted with upgrades. "Cool" I think but they happen every 2 minutes or so and it really breaks the groove I'm feeling when I play. Anyway, about 10 minutes of in of collecting a crap-ton of upgrades I start to wonder "when does this get difficult?" "Did I accidentally put this in easy mode?" "Overwhelmingly Positive?" I think my second run at it I suicided because I started feeling drowsy. My third run I used some of those extra game modes to see if I could spice things up and felt no real difference. I guess I was expecting something a little more arcade-feeling and not some kind of wall paper simulator. I Nova Drift and understand it's in Early Access but I wonder if this game is truly for me. I like the idea of Asteroids with weapon upgrades but this game is too drawn out to be a score chaser. So, I ask you all....am I playing this wrong? EDIT: This is a repost of a forum post but I wanted to submit it as a review because I wanted to warn other scorechasers out there. This game is not what you think it might be. After about 5 minutes it sinks in and you start feeling buyers remorse. Some games (hell, most arcade games) click right away. Classics like Missile Command, Berserk, Robotron, Tempest. Frantic, hot, heavy. In the first hour of play, Nova Drift is neither of these. The potential is there but not today my friends..Show moreShow less
I probably "played" this longer than it took to make. I can't stop. This is not a game. It's a warfare device that *will* be used against humanity in the machine rebellion to captivate and assimilate us. You have been warned. Avoid at all costs.Show moreShow less
Quick side note: I came third in the speedrun of this game organized by the devs themselves and am still 7th, so what I'm saying is not the rage of a bad player, but the frustration of a familiar one. Unfortunately, this game started out far more fun than it is now. With each update it has become more and more unbalanced. It's not worth it to play because the mechanics are incredibly frustrating. You can spend an hour+ on a run and die instantly to random pink mines. Even with full tank mods you can die within the span of a second. Instant death is not fun. It really is just an issue of the devs not knowing how to balance as the updates come out, as the game has only become more and more unfair and much easier to die. This game is more about how many failed runs you can slog through just to get to another run that's cool for about five minutes until you die.Show moreShow less
