I don't write reviews much but this game is very significant for me, personally. A little over 5 years ago I started dating a girl who lived about an hour away from me, so we could only really see each other on the weekends. Around that time, I saw Orcs Must Die 2 was on sale. I thought it looked fun so I got both of us copies to play together while we voice chatted every night. We both loved it. It was so much fun and it was so nice to have a game that was "our game". Fast forward to now, I have now married that girl, and much to my surprise I see that Orcs Must Die 3 has been released! I immediately bought it for us both and we've been playing it nonstop, often way past our bedtimes. It's super fun! I feel like they've added some new layers of complexity that get my brain cooking up new ways to kill orcs efficiently. At the same time though, the game feels very nostalgic for us. While we've been playing, we've been reminiscing about when we first started dating. It's been super nice.Show moreShow less

OMD3 is not a bad game, but it does not compare to OCD2 and that is a shame. First off depending on your GPU ( running a RTX3080 ) there's a good chance it will max it out despite just running in 60fps despite the primitive cartoony graphics ( your electrical company will love you ) - so I hope you like to listen to your fans run at max for hours.. Second and more importantly the maps are not trap-based - you constantly have mutlple enemy spawn locations close to your rift with very few options to make the killboxes that the first 2 games were all about - WHY? Thirdly you don't get enough money to build up your trapzones - when playing endless don't even expect more than 3seconds between waves so good luck selling and building before under attack again - and when enemy arches keep blowing up your blocks that is where your money will go in an endless cicle of frustration.. No workshop support either btw :( So I'm finding myself stuck using archers in drowes because you simply do not have resources enough to make good trap-setups and all the time playing ( the campiagn is short and endless is limited ) I wish I was playing OMD2.. Honestly just play OMD2 it's a better game in all ways!Show moreShow less

Amazing game don't be put off by others. Very similar to the others but that's not a bad thing. If you're like me and want more than 60fps you will have to change it manually which is a bit of a nightmare but it's easy to do. Just do the following; 1 - Go to the below directory C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Robot Entertainment\Orcs Must Die! 3\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\GameUserSettings.ini If AppData doesn't show up, go to "View" at the top and check the "Hidden Items" box. Alternatively, open WIN+R and type "%AppData%". Go back one folder and go into "Local". 2 - Open this file in Notepad 3 - CTRL+F -> Search "Frame" -> "Find Next" until you reach "FrameRameLimit" 4 - Set this value to your desired Frame Rate (e.g. 120, 144, 240, 360) 5 - Save the file and close -> Right click "Properties" -> Set to "Read Only" <3Show moreShow less

This is a tough one. I avoided the Unchained disaster entirely, waited for Steam release for OMD3. It feels more like a subexpansion of OMD2 more than anything. The new things they try end up hindering the game in my opinion. As one other reviewer mentioned, its less an action tower defense game with some 3PV action, more of a full 3PV action game, with a few towers to support. I played the previous ones and many others as a strategist, I like to set up funnels, kill boxes, and trap layers that handle the mobs for me - minimal help from me needed. OMD3 does not permit this. As a matter of fact, many early waves on many maps you simply have too little resources to even set up a basic trap box and you have to take out the entire wave by yourself. Not a terrible thing, but not a thing many Orcs! players likely would have wanted in a sequel. They don't give enough resources, and the traps for the large part are underpowered. The devs seem to really want you to engage in high intensity close combat personally and I don't like that. The winning combo for me was tar, blockades and archers. Everything else is superfluous. You get an area where you can slow them down and the archers will machinegun them to death. I remember OMD2, needing to stagger and layer traps, with a variety, to deal with mobs with chain combos, all that seems to be forgotten here. To futher make this an action game and not a tower defense game, many maps are simple and non-combinable. Meaning each source of mob has its own lane, and you have to deal with them seperately. Few are the maps that allow for proper channeling, funneling, cross killing and narrowing attack avenues. There are even maps that have spawn points very near the rift, giving you very little time and room to deal with them. That seems to be where the challenge primarily lies in this game. In having to run from one lane to another, often right next to the rift, and shoot or cut down the mobs yourself, rather than letting the traps handle it. More fortnighty than a true TD - even an action TD in execution. The story is meh. You get a cutscene here or there, some before map dialog, but thats really it. The primary campaign is supposed to be about this ancient defender who was abandoned in orc territory and turned evil and is returning for vengence. You see him on a cliff in the last mission and then he esplodes if you win. Thats it. Thats the whole thing. Underwhelming. To me this feels like a game that was rushed through production, for whatever reason. Maybe Unchained was such a bomb, they needed profitable product out fast. Maybe they had to rush to be a Stadia (lawl) launch title. Doesn't matter. Its a game that feels like corners were cut and design/mechanics principles were abandoned in favor of a quick turnaround. Just my feeling on things from playing. There are some positives. The war scenarios and warmachines are NOT one of those positives. They can only be used on specific maps and only in specific places, and are very expensive. You are better served to use normal traps in normal areas, and massacre like a true war mage. Scramble mode is great though. Scramble mode is an Ironman endurance match where you have to play 5 maps back to back, each successive map adds a penalty and a bonus, and you have some choice about them. Its a terrific mode for replayability and interesting experiences. I got bonuses once for deadlier traps, cheaper traps with penalties for dying and it almost felt like a real OMD experience - putting out many traps, staying out of danger for the most part and letting my machines do the work. Bottom line, its a lesser version, a shadow, of OMD2. There are a few new ideas, most fall flat. It shifts the pendulum from trapping to avatar action (shooting/slicing/magic), so if you're wanting good tower defense gameplay, go elsewhere. If you're a fan of the series, getting this on sale is a good move. If you like simple 3rd person action against hordes of mobs, this is for you.Show moreShow less

EDIT: As of v1.2 some of the weak trap problems were addressed buffing some traps and reducing the price of others. It doesn't solve all problems, but it certainly made the game more enjoyable and the learning curve less steep. 💬Forewords: It frustrates me to have to write a negative review about a game in a franchise I like so much. But I do it to vent out some of my annoyance with the changes they've done to the game compared to Orcs Must Die! 1 and 2. 📉"Balance" This is the reason this game feels so unfulfilling. It seems like the game was tailor made to be less rewarding and less pleasant than it was before. A lot of traps are unbalanced and many are so weak/expensive that they just don't cut it for Rift Lord, the highest difficulty (just to name a few: Decoy, Swinging Mace, Acid Geyser, Floor Scorcher). Nerfs when they happen usually make traps near useless while buffs are so meager they barely help change anything at all. Weapons suffer from lack of balance too. Only a handful are worth using in higher difficulties and some are so weak they're not even worth considering (Elven Shortswords, Alchemist Satchel). Even weapon Mana Regen is completely absent. The game does its darnest to counter the use of certain traps (Arcane Dragon and Saw Blade Launcher) for no reason other than the "balance". Such thing did happen before, but not the extent of OMD!3. Characters have just marginal differences between Health and Mana, but no special trait beyond a small mobility skill triggered by double jumping, so all of them feels "samey" to play and nothing helps you try out new playstyles outside your own self-interest. Again, the reasoning behind this was, most likely, "balance". OMD!1 had Weavers and 2 had characters with a big enough difference in Mana and Health (and exclusive traps) to force you to adapt and learn or test new builds, but there is no such thing here. In the end it seems Robot Ent. was too worried about balance, so much it ended up making for some very obnoxious level design and questionable enemy and gameplay choices. Whenever a company worries too much about game balance it inevitably ends up killing a lot of the fun in the game. ❌About War Scenarios: The War Scenarios in particular could've been done better. They drag on for too long and overstay their welcome. The War Machines can be only used in these maps. However, in most cases, you're better off arming places with regular traps instead of placing War Machines which is a pity. Later maps are designed in such a way that War Machines can feel downright detrimental and being a waste of money. Another thing is that you cannot place them inside buildings. This kills many would-be nice strategies and is just another factor in what makes War Machines so underwhelming for veteran players. Even bosses add very little to the mix due to how easy they are to deal with. Scramble Mode shows they could've been into the regular game just fine (albeit not on EVERY wave), but they are present mostly in War Scenarios. Having two currencies and enemies that should be specifically targeted by War Machines would do wonders to avoid the problem of War Machines being outdone by regular traps. Downsizing them or their effect a bit so they'd fit into buildings would also be a good option to place them in tandem with the regular traps. ⚖️How does it hold up against Orcs Must Die! 1 and 2? Sadly, comparing this game to the previous ones only serves to highlight the flaws of this game. The game lacks pre-battle music except for War Scenarios. Graphically, the HUD design was changed from colorful to a bland, minimalist, dull style: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2793488611 Characters (and Orcs) have nowhere as many lines and start repeating the same phrases and one-liners very often which is particularly noticeable in longer games, like War Scenarios or Endless, and they don't even have wave start/end lines. And ALL of them share the same animations, including victory dance ones. Everything just feels lazy. Quality over quantity should be the lesson here. The gameplay was simplified and some status effects and damage types were removed. Chill, an alternative to slow, is absent. Damage types; impact, cutting, piercing and explosive were reworked into a single type (Physical). This simplification becomes a problem because Physical damage type is resisted by the vast majority of enemies in the game. And by vast majority I mean that it's easier to pick enemies that AREN'T resistant to it than the other way around. This renders Physical traps and weapons, one of the most common damage types, very ineffective. On enemies, we have Fire Fiends. Fire Fiends are enemies that are as numerous as Orcs and are completely immune to fire element. Why? What made the developers assume bringing an entire enemy faction immune to an element was a good design decision? In previous games Fire and Frost Ogres (which are unexplainably absent here) were enough of a threat to force you to mix different elements, an entire faction of enemies feels just ridiculous. Enemy design also became blander. Regular Orcs are all copy-pastes of each other instead of having a few distinct features (different skin colors or different armoring, like OMD!2 Orcs had) which could help players visually gauge how dangerous an Orc mob could be. Elementals also suffered from design change becoming boring, generic, looking enemies that could be seen in any fantasy game. Armored Ogres instead of wearing armor now seems like they just have bits of scraps all over them. Many weapons are absent here too: Vampiric Gauntlets, Dwarven Missile Launcher, Polymorph Ring, Bone Amulet. As for traps that are missing: Boulder Chute, Healing Well, Acid Sprayer, Ice Vent, Dwarves, Mana Well, Coinforge, Void Wall, Spore Mushroom, Web Spinner. Strategy-wise, the game became too focused on using a single core strategy: using Barricades to funnel enemies into a narrow space instead of being able to create big, open, killzones, which the game makes sure to discourage as much as possible with the small map design and weak/expensive crowd control and larger area hitting traps. Whereas Barricade killzones was a polite suggestion in previous games, in OMD!3 this strategy is so blatantly superior that not using it makes most of the maps more difficult. Par times are needlessly demanding which punishes many, less aggressive, strategies as well. Previous games had maps with tough Par times, but OMD!3, again, exaggerates doing this in almost EVERY map. The decision to cramp three storylines (the new Apprentices, the two ancient War Mages, and finding Max) with such limited time and levels to tell it was also a bad idea, as bad as leaving the face of the game, Maximilian, out of the 99% of the story. Again, everything feels rushed and ham-fisted at best and at worst half-heartedly which, for me, feels worse than not doing it in first place. Kelsey and Egan, the newcomers, lack any of Max and Gabriella's charm with their lines being most about uninspired and soulless banter or clunky exposition. Multiplayer also has a lot of missing features compared to the previous game: no in-game text chat, no pause, no in-game Voip, the inability to see your partner's loadout and not being able to see where they'll place a trap are the key ones. The host can also move to the next screen without your input before you upgrade which can be annoying. Lastly, there are several bugs and glitches that were reported by players a year ago and most of them are still in the game. Like pre-order skins having no voice since *day 1*, no "Final Wave" warning in Rift Lord, clunky physics especially with Sappers and several Scramble Mode glitches in the wild. 💭Closing thoughts If you're coming from 1, 2 or Unchained you will notice the flaws right away, so this is a big cautious recommendation.Show moreShow less

Here is my 5 mission review (now that players have found a solution to the HDR issue, quoted below). I'll update this list as new information is found or I have additional thoughts. Here is the HDR fix. Navigate to C:\Users\YourUserNameHere\AppData\Local\Robot Entertainment\Orcs Must Die! 3\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor In the Engine.ini, add. [SystemSettings] r.HDR.EnableHDROutput=0 r.HDR.UI.CompositeMode=0 r.HDR.Display.OutputDevice=0 r.HDR.Display.ColorGamut=0 Bugs Found HDR issue, must disable with ini edits. Windowed Fullscreen issue. On two 4K monitors, changing it from default Fullscreen to Windowed Fullscreen created an infinite loop of the game turning my monitors on and off and had to force quit. Tried to fix it via the ini's, but it refused. Ended up re-installing completely to resolve the problem and left it on Fullscreen. 1 mission got stuck on wave 3 and wouldn't advance. My guess is an enemy fell somewhere and got stuck (nothing on the mini map though). Had to restart the mission. Hopefully not a major problem. Quality of Life Needed Ability to disable HDR on our own without an ini edit. Or at least defaulting to what Windows setting is set to (I already have HDR disabled on Windows, Orcs ignored that). Need to let players rebind WASD for movement (it's not even in the options). I have a workaround for it (I use a Logitech G13, so just a matter of creating a profile). But I would hate to be forced to use WASD. It may be possible to edit this via an ini edit, but shouldn't have to. I don't see a way to have multiple "characters" like in Orcs 2. Like, if you didn't want to use your character that has unlocked every single trap and weapon to play with others, or you just felt like doing a new playthrough. Would love to have that added back in (unless I'm blind and haven't found it somewhere, in which case I'll update this review). Positives The sequel we have all been waiting for (not counting the one that shall not be named in-between Orcs 2 and 3). As far as I can tell so far, it improves on every formula that made Orcs 1/2 special. I can tell I'm going to get a lot of hours in this, just as I did with Orcs 2.Show moreShow less

Not sure whether to recommend this game or not... Low hours I realise, and part of the reason for that is purely because of the state of the game. So if you're on the fence about purchasing, I'd probably hold off until a sale and/or updates change it. Putting it simply, I loved OMD and OMD2, and this is technically the same. The graphics are definitely better, and certain aspects of the game (especially character control) are better. But... that's not really that surprising. Or at least, it should be expected, given the release dates respectively. So why do I struggle to get into the game? I think it's primarily because of the traps... Or lack, thereof. It feels like it takes ages to get a good kill-box going, and by the time you do, your 6+ waves in, probably 1 from the end (or at the end...) and have killed ~50%, possibly more, of the orcs yourself. You can argue balance issues, but I feel like this is intentional and will not be changed (considering the game is 1 year old, technically). And so each and every map I find myself in the exact same situation: Kill 80% of the orcs myself early waves, and slightly less towards the end. I thought the harder maps, or the onslaught (or whatever it is called) mode would be different - Alas, it's still kill 80% yourself early waves, but instead of 8/10 orcs, it's 80/100 orcs, and that's actually far worse!! If I wanted to play a 1st/3rd person shooter killing obscure enemies, that's what I have L4D2 for... What I was hoping for was to be a master planner for in-house renovations to keep out the enemies for me whilst I munch on tea and biscuits. But I find myself tending to so much of the work myself regardless, that I don't even know why I bothered with them in the first place.. Overall, the kill box DOES become a thing, and you CAN watch them destroy hordes of enemies. But you CANNOT take your eyes of it for a second, because something will inevitably get through, and it takes time to get there - So that feeling of satisfaction takes a while to kick in.. Quite a while, comparatively to how long it lasts, as well.Show moreShow less

Follow my Curator Page if you're into Strategy Games! This review is especially for people who didn't play Orcs Must Die before or can't remember much. Orcs Must Die! 3 is a tower defense game in third-person perspective fully playable in co-op. There is a castle (dungeon) with a rift in it. Orcs want to get into the rift and you have to prevent that. Aside from shooting/firing a bow/etc. with your main weapon, you can build traps around the castle which will help you out. All of this is played as a third-person shooter. You have 20 rift points (mostly, there are some exceptions) per mission. Whenever an enemy enters the rift, rift points will go down. If you reach zero, you lost. Campaign You can select one of three different difficulties. There are 18 missions in total in the main campaign and a few more in the DLC campaign which was added for free (the game originally came out one year ago as a Stadia Exclusive). The campaign tells a little story through a few cutscenes and dialogues within missions. It's nothing outstanding really. Every mission contains a different map. More and more different enemies will be storming your castle. Some will hit you with a baseball bat, some will shoot you, some just try to get to the rift and ignore you. In any case, you have to kill them all. For every mission you beat, you get skulls. With skulls, you can enhance traps and weapons, giving them special abilities, or reducing their cooldown or costs. Battles As in many other tower defense games, you will have unlimited time to prepare for the first wave. You can run around the map, study the minimap (very important!) and see which enemies come through which door as well as the path they take. This helps you in building the right traps in the right place. To build them, you need a currency. Every trap has different costs. I don't know what exactly the currency is called, but it's the only currency in battles. Anyways, you get more of that currency for killing orcs which means, after every wave you can build more and more traps. Traps, weapons, and trinkets There are over 60 different traps, weapons, and trinkets in total. Each of them can be upgraded with skulls. You need to unlock many of them first to even use them. They will be unlocked through playing the campaign or paying with skulls. Trinkets will buff you while playing (like regenerating more HP). There are traps shooting arrows from the wall, spikes coming out of the ground, some will slow down the enemy, some will give you the ability to block the path and therefore changing the enemy's path to a longer route and more. While most of them will be activated whenever an enemy steps on them, moves past them, or whatever, some of them can be used actively. Different Modes Aside from the campaign (and the DLC campaign), there is an endless mode, weekly challenges, and a scramble mode. The first and second are self-explanatory, but the scramble mode is pretty new. You have to play on five different maps but your rift points don't reset. You have to choose between a few debuffs and get buffs after playing a bit (successfully of course!). No matter which mode you're playing - you will get skulls. This serves as an overall progression. Multiplayer? You can play with a friend or stranger online but sadly I wasn't able to try it out yet. No one joined my game and I couldn't join others (always got an error). I hope this is just a launch-day issue and will be fixed later. The Good It's strategic. Enemies will come from different doors, storming your castle. You will have to take care of every door, look on the mini-map to see where you need to head next. It's a bit stressful at times but doesn't make it too easy. The content. Several game modes, over 60 traps, weapons, and trinkets, and every one of them is upgradable. I read there aren't many new traps compared to Orcs Must Die! 2 but as someone who didn't play much of that, it's a lot of content. Enemies. There is a variety of enemies coming your way. It won't get boring taking care of them since they are pretty different from each other. It's nothing new in the genre but I was surprised by enemies shooting me instead of just running straight to the rift. It adds another layer to the strategic part of the game. The Bad Playing with a controller sucks a bit. It's not smooth putting traps on the ceiling. You will need a few seconds to adjust them and this is a killer if you're in the middle of a wave. While it's easy to aim with a rifle, it's a lot harder with a bow for example. You need to aim precisely with that and that's way harder with a controller. It's also time killer when an enemy just runs past you and you have to completely turn around. You will get used to it with a bit of practice but it could still use some tweaking. The Grind. While it is nice to have an overall progression, it's tied to the difficulty to some extend. Upgrading traps and weapons will make the game easier and as missions will progressively harder, you will need upgrades to stand a chance. It's nothing new to the genre but I always dislike it a bit when I have to replay missions to get higher scores and more skulls just to get further in the campaign if you don't want to lower the overall difficulty (making it too easy). So while it gets progressively harder as it should be, the spike is a bit too much. Performance. I don't have any problems with the performance since my rig is way above the recommended specs but it still goes down to around 30 FPS when many enemies and traps are in your castle. I can't imagine people with minimum specs handling that on 30FPS at the very least. I also read in other reviews that some people have many other problems like crashes and flickering. I can't say anything about that but I guess everyone should know before buying it. Conclusion Orcs Must Die! 3 is a solid tower defense game. The third-person gameplay is a very nice addition to the genre even though it's nothing new (Well, it's a sequel). It offers a lot of content with three different game modes, over 60 traps, weapons and trinkets, and six or seven different playable characters. It has some serious performance issues which can be a killer for some and are pretty grindy if you want to beat the campaign without lowering the difficulty. As I stated above, I can't say much compared to its predecessor but looking at this as a newbie - this is a great and addictive game. If you are into tower-defense games and didn't have high expectations based on your experience with one of its predecessors, I definitely recommend getting the game. I will change my review accordingly after playing more! If you like my review and strategy games, please consider following my curator page on Steam!Show moreShow less

It's fun, but not as good as the first two games. -I love the new maps, scenarios and the graphics overall. -Traps are not as strong as they were in previous games, so you have to rely a lot on weapons. While this is fun for some, I'd like the option of focusing entirely on traps. -I absolutely hate the score-system. Farming points off combos is something I refuse to do. Utterly boring and pointless. -The new characters are boring, and so is the story. I really hope they'll head a different way with this.Show moreShow less
