Please just revert this update and pretend it never happened, Honestly embarrassing that it was released in its current state.Show moreShow less
I was being chased by the ghost, I hid in a closet, I had to fart, my mic picked up my fart. I died.Show moreShow less
i have 430+ hours in the game pre-customization update and all i have to say is this is absolutely ridiculous. i would not recommend this game in its current state. the customizations are already worse than the previous default ones, the animations are janky, there is so much lag when utilizing items, and proportions are horrendous. i even turned off the immersive animations to see if it would make it any better and it didn't help much. this used to be my favorite game to play both with friends and solo and i will not be playing as long as this update stays/continues. there were already a sufficient amount of glitches and bugs that turned me off to regular gameplay but this is a shame for me.Show moreShow less
Playing solo, I load up the school map for the first time. I stop and appreciate how big and unnerving the map is. I check my equipment. I look around some more. I realize that I'm putting off going any further. The phone down the hall rings. After changing my pants, I start to hunt down where the ringing came from. All the way down the hall, huh? But the front door is all the way over here, and... oh, fine. I track down the room, pull out the EMF meter, which immediately jumps to 5. I throw down my book, ask the ghost to write in it (well, what came out was "Okaydothethinghurryup"), then sort of moonwalk my way back down the hall while chanting variations of "Nope". One Alt+F4 later, and I'm here writing this review. Nothing even happened, I simply psyched myself out. Now that's a horror game.Show moreShow less
The game, when it works, is fun and has been for years. What is not fun is the lack of demonstrable skill at Kinetic Games in understanding and developing their own game and giving it the respect it, and the players, deserve. The Customisation update that has rolled out has embarrassingly poor quality rigging and animation - animators please next time get a mirror and a video camera and try the poses out BEFORE you model them in game and learn about IK constraints to stop bone-breaking poses, critical mechanical issues that break gameplay - various items and tools do not function as they should leading to deaths and gear/money loss, and an overall rushed, untested, unpolished and frustrating experience. For a game this far into it's dev cycle and built off the back of pre-made and un-updated assets, and with a significant amount of income, it's shameful to push out something as poor quality as this. If the game mechanics don't work you cannot play the game. Do better Kinetic Games.Show moreShow less
Teammates left me in a room, saw a deformed child running at me and disappear, spent the next five minutes sitting in a corner with a crucifix. Highly recommend.Show moreShow less
6 years later, 25 million copies sold, and a movie deal and they deliver the worst update of all updates after hyping it up for years. So y'all just don't test your updates before pushing them out anymore?Show moreShow less
I asked where the ghost was. It said "close" I asked what did it want me to do. It said "die" Then I heard a croak and got strangled to death. Friends took a picture of my dead body and made $10. 10/10Show moreShow less
Edit/Disclaimer: Final update. While changes finally seem to be showing up, this review will stay as it is. I want it to remain a product of its time—a cautionary tale about KG as a company, how they treated their community, and how trust was eroded in the long run, for whatever comes next. Phasmophobia is my most played game. I rarely write reviews (not my forte and English isn't my language) so I'll TRY to stay on point due to Steam's character limit. There's too much to say but I hope to provide you with an in-depth, honest review. As you may know, this game started a genre on its own due to its explosive success. >THE GOOD: ◆ Gameplay seems simple at first, but can be tough for new players who lack information and want to learn the hard way. It is no less fun, though. I recommend playing the Tutorial first. Also read your Journal, the Store's explanations and Equipment descriptions. You play as a Ghost Hunter whose objective is to investigate haunted locations and identify the ghost's type by gathering evidence using classic equipment from ghost hunting shows (which inspired the game). This game will not hold your hand. You'll have no in-game UI, a limited inventory and a simplistic stamina system allowing you to sprint for a few seconds only. The game is primarily designed to be played as up to 4 Players, but it remains manageable/fun in Solo. On completing contracts, you'll earn XP/Money depending on the difficulty you play on, the objectives you complete, and how much extra evidence you fill your Journal with. You'll use that Money to buy more equipment and upgrade it. However, the leveling system is grindy and the majority of your equipment/upgrades will be level-locked. You'll eventually have to play in harder modes to earn more rewards, and to manage your funds to decide what upgrades are worth it. At some point you'll unlock the Custom Difficulty so you can have your own tailor-made experience by modifying various parameters. It adds some replayability, no matter your skill level. Ghosts have inherent, specific behaviors and tells outside of their main Evidences, which you will learn the more you familiarize yourself with the game and will be essential to know in harder modes. ◆ About Customization/Cosmetics: not much to say. You'll pick your character to play as, from a small selection. You can also earn various ID Cards/Badges by playing and completing various challenges/achievements or prestiging (level/gear reset). You'll find no microtransactions such as skins/battlepasses/DLCs. Everything beyond the base game price is free, a rare quality nowadays. ◆ It is a fun paranormal-themed puzzle game that will keep you addicted if you click with the gameplay loop. Or you will become bored after some time. Speaking of it, if you want to play for its horror aspect, do not expect much. While there are a few jumpscares, they're pretty barebones and have been so for a long time, as this is a 6 Years Old EA game at that time. You quickly become desensitized to the horror and it is first and foremost a puzzle/investigation game. The game used to have unique seasonal events with fun and creative mechanics (Easter/Halloween/Christmas, until late 2024) which ended up being replaced with thematic but grindy, repetitive community events. Everything I described above will be your experience. I'll be honest and say you'll definitely have your worth of fun and content for quite some time, considering the game's price. So why a Negative review in spite of such a strong "Good" part so far ? Because there's still much to be done with the game, and to be said regarding the developers, Kinetic Games. If you want to understand my perspective on the game's reality and its downsides, keep reading, if you will. >THE BAD: ◇ Multiplayer is infested with cheaters, toxic guys and creeps. Cheaters tend to ruin your lobbies and your games. They also control and dominate the leaderboards during Events (yes, enjoy competing for points), nullifying an already pointless feature. Kinetic Games are out of touch with this situation and barely acknowledge the state of things. ◇ KG very recently started banning en-masse. Including false bans on which they refused to disclose information (even when appealing) until their subreddit made a huge stink of it. You can also find other notorious dramas here (Charcoal Salamander, toxic treatment of their volunteers, etc). They act in a very unprofessional manner. ◇ The game, 6 YEARS OF EA later, remains plagued with numerous bugs of varying severity, that KG do not seem intent on fixing. These bugs can affect your gameplay, or even your save data. You might end up bothering to create a Discord account solely to ask for support on their server. The devs do not care about Steam forums and went to hide in a Discord echo chamber to silence criticism and valid concerns. ◇ The game is also notoriously poorly optimized and recent updates keep making things even worse on top of adding bugs. A lot of people with various Rigs are experiencing framedrops/freezes, memory leaks and such. Console versions are no different and were hastily made, on top of delaying ONE YEAR'S worth of development for their sake. KG haven't learned their lesson and are now pushing for a Switch 2 port. ◇ KG's communication is very poor, and severely lacks transparency and honesty. This results in long periods of silence and content droughts while they treat the game as a Live-Service with a weird obsession for the "Twitch Culture" with exclusive, time-limited drops and all manners of FOMO-based content punishing people for having a life, working, etc. They've been known, for years, to make a lot of promises and roadmaps on which they've consistently failed to deliver, when they're not just outright lying and quietly going back on them only to add some divisive map reworks and the repetitive grindy events I mentioned. While the map reworks/new maps are really good IMO, KG still try to avoid accountability and remain dead silent when it comes to promised major updates such as the Player Character Rework or their Horror 2.0 Rework. They show no progress and no results when it comes to the bigger picture. ◇ Despite the game's huge success, grossing MILLIONS in revenue and KG becoming more than an "indie" studio (now at 40+ people), they've left the game in a half-broken state for years, and do not care about using this revenue to improve it. Their priorities instead lie in aggressively pushing unfinished console versions and low-quality Consoomer-Bait merch, or even collab' events with big IPs (Alan Wake) while their game still sits in Early Access. They care more about today's "gamers" than their OG fans who've been voicing valid concern on the game's direction. They favor their clique of Partner Streamers and reinject their funds into pointless endeavors (such as Kinetic Publishing/sponsorships) instead of finishing what they started. They can count on their massive following of "fans" blindly, dishonestly gaslighting and shutting down any form of criticism to defend them, as this game, by becoming mainstream, has gained a toxic positivity cult comprised of the Lowest Common Denominator. The latest and biggest example of KG's dishonesty can be summed up by quietly editing a promised Q1 2026 update release date out of their Dev Article #21 (website version) to hide another delay they'll take no accountability for. Take into account the issues I described and how clear KG made their intentions (delaying the development while milking dry their naive and zealous community with always more merch/FOMO), and you'll understand my Negative Rating. Despite the game's qualities, loving it so much and wishing the best for it, there's no expressing my disappointment and frustration with KG and their lies. They DO NOT deserve your support and even if you love the game, you'll regret it eventually. DO NOT BUY PHASMOPHOBIA.Show moreShow less
