Wow, the Pirate game genre is pretty dry right now. I wish there was a game that could scratch that itch. The Yakuza series for some reason:Show moreShow less
Look, I didn't hate my time with this game. Matter of fact, I actually enjoyed a good bit of it. At the end of the day, it's Majima being Majima, and there is no universe in which that is not fun. But there are a lot of glaring issues which really can't be overlooked when trying to justify this high of a price tag. Pirate Yakuza is priced like a full, triple A release. It is not a full triple A release. It's a DLC, much how Man Who Erased His Name was a DLC. The latter was literally planned as an Infinite Wealth DLC and later got a full release, and even then the already lower price tag was a big point of criticism (for being too high). So why did they think releasing this at full price was a good idea? 95% of the side content is recylced. 1:1. It's just the exact same content as in Infinite Wealth. They changed absolutely nothing. The story is extremely short, which again, for a fully priced RGG release is completely insane. The story itself was possibly the weakest in the series for me, for which it's length is probably to blame in part. The characters felt very weak and poorly written, again, due to lack of time to flesh them out. I didn't hate it, but it felt secondary to everything else, which probably isn't great for an RGG game. Like I said at the start, there are a lot of things I really enjoyed about this game. The combat felt fun, especially on the rare occasion that the game actually let you fight bosses one-on-one. The new mechanics lacked a little depth, but they were fun, well implemented and flowed with the rest of Majimas moveset. Majima was Majima, that's always fun. The ship combat was enjoyable for exactly the amount of time you are forced to do it for the story, but got extremely tedious for all the side content beyond just the story. I don't regret the time I spent on this game in the slightest. Even having the knowledge I do now, there is no way I wouldn't have played it at some point. What I do regret is the money I spent. Get this game at half price (or lower), don't set your expectations too high, and you'll have a blast with it. If you're worried about missing important overarching plot points for the series, don't be. Nothing happens. Wait for a sale, play it whenever, it doesn't have the slightest bit of significance to the rest of the series.Show moreShow less
You can play Mahjong as Goro Majima again. Everything else the game has to offer is simply just extra content to the real game, Mahjong.Show moreShow less
Compared to other yakuza games, I wouldn't recommend this game. It's unfocused, inconsequential, and not worth the price. I've been a fan for 7 years and love Majima as a character, so I was excited for this, but I was left disappointed. The gameplay is very easy, even on the highest difficulty; There are no memorable boss fights, and all fights can be completed quickly by spamming the main attack button. The side content even feels rushed, and the completion list is very easy to complete. I reached the max pirate level within 4 hours by just doing some bounties - it should be a lot more difficult to do so. All in all, this game feels like a game for people who like yakuza because of the memes, not because of the storytelling, characterization, or interesting side content the game series is known for.Show moreShow less
I dont know why RGG studios insists on putting a robust combat system and interesting story in my Mahjong simulator, but I will just consider that a cherry on a very delicous cake.Show moreShow less
Just wrapped up the game and I gotta say, I'm pretty underwhelmed. Across the board – story, combat, music – it feels like it needed more time in development. It's not terrible, but it's definitely not up to the usual RGG standard. Let's start with the music. Usually, the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games have killer soundtracks, but this one? Forgettable. The only tracks that stand out are Mad Dog's combat theme, which is pretty hype, and that one sea shanty. The rest of the music just kind of fades into the background, which is a real bummer. The combat system...it's okay, I guess. Maybe a slight improvement over Gaiden in terms of juggling enemies, but it feels like we took a step back in other areas. Where are all the cool ground heat actions? Mad Dog's heat actions feel really limited, and having only one heat bar is super restrictive. It feels like they were trying to make the combat more button-mashy to deal with the bigger groups of enemies, but that gets old fast. Especially in boss fights or when you're just fighting a few dudes, which is like 90% of the encounters in the game. It just feels repetitive. And then there's the story... Honestly, nothing really happens. It's supposed to be a fun, lighthearted adventure, but everything feels so inconsequential. Majima and the gang always get their way in the end, and there's no real sense of danger or stakes. The protagonist is always right, and the story just keeps repeating the same formula. Saejima is just...there. He doesn't really contribute anything to the plot, and anyone could have filled his role in the finale. And the final boss? What a joke! No cool QTE, no real challenge, just a boring fight. I'm starting to think these smaller "side game" releases are actually hurting the quality of the series. We're paying full price for these games, and I know RGG is capable of so much more. I'd much rather go back to the fuller, more complete experiences we got with the Judgment series or the older Yakuza games. Those games felt like they had something to say, while this one just feels like filler. Overall, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza is a decent game, but it's definitely not one of the best in the series. It's worth playing if you're a die-hard fan, but if you're new to the series, I'd recommend starting with something else."Show moreShow less
The best way I can describe this was that this game was designed to be fun. It feels like it's a game that was designed by people who wanted other people to enjoy their passion project. Character writing so far is amazing, incredible voice acting, meaty combat, great music - and while it is early days and I can't comment on the story. I'm hooked enough to want to know what happens next for the characters alone. I can see why people love the Yakuza series and this is coming from someone who's never really touched the games. And while this game isn't necessarily something I'd normally play (I'm normally a sucker for zombie survival games/looting type games), I feel like I appreciate the work that's gone into this. While of course every product like this is designed to make money, for me personally at least I feel like this clearly had a lot of love poured into it.Show moreShow less
Game seems great but it realy likes to crash System is above the recomended requirments and runs fine mostly but in 4 hours it crashed 2 times already Update: After it crashed once more i locked fps to 60 and it seems like it fixed the problem. For some reason game was crashing in cutscenes when fps isn't locked. Negative review just to get attention to the problem.Show moreShow less
solid game, been playing on my steamdeck. Game runs pretty smoothly had no issues so far. Update: I absolutely love this game and rate it a 10/10 in my books!Show moreShow less
I have played through all the games thoroughly and this is one of the weaker entries. Compared to the other games it just feels soulless and empty with a lacklustre story. Seriously hoping RGG don't go down this route again with any future titles but it's not completely horrible. Sadly the Yakuza fandom is good at glazing their own games and the best at failing to point out any criticisms. Buy at a discount if you really like Majima, but even then they've somehow made him uninteresting in this game.Show moreShow less
