It's one of those games that makes me wish steam reviews had more than "Yes/No". Before going into details, should you buy/play Postal: Brain Damaged? If you're an FPS enthusiast then yes. If you aren't very picky and just want to blow up some enemies while jumping around at 80km/h then also yes. If those don't apply then maybe no, this game doesn't offer much that isn't done better in games that inspired it. Long ass explanation ahead. To me, the main problem with PBD is that it takes cool ideas from other FPS games without thinking why those ideas work or if they fit into the game. They obviously have the shotgun hook from Eternal, but it's fairly bad in this game since it doesn't stagger enemies and doesn't offer as much maneuverability. This means that if you hook towards most enemies, you will likely get shot during it. Instead of being a tool in your arsenal, it becomes a "thing" that just exists in the game. Reflect is another huge example since it just doesn't mesh with the game, at all. Most of the time you want to be moving around and shooting enemies. Meanwhile to reflect projectiles you have to stand still and time your kick and the reward on that is too miniscule to justify. There are many such "things" in PBD that don't feel like a meaningful part of the game. Like useless guns, alt.fires, consumables, etc. There are simply no incentive in gameplay to mix up your playstyle or weapon choise. For example I only ever used shaft to clear up monkey/cacodemon spawns and other low tier mobs while gatling gun was collecting dust. Machinegun, Rocket, Shotgun, and Bow are basically good enough to do everything. Despite playing on highest difficulty I made it to the end of each episode with plenty of excess ammo, power-ups, and pipes/vests. Enemy design is part of the issue since they don't force you to play around them at all. Most of the bestiary either runs at you, runs and shoots at you, or keeps distance and shoots. All of these are negated by slide jumping left/right. Same way, your weapon choice will usually be dictated by range rather than the enemy you're facing. Doesn't help that the maps aren't designed with enemies in mind. There are so many areas where you can just kill enemies without them having an opportunity to fight back or they can be simply dispatched. Like what's the point of the BDSM enemies in the vents? They never pose an actual threat. That's just one example of many. The pacing is also rather inconsistent, and to be fair there are many games that struggle with this, Doom 2016 and Eternal to some extent too. Sometimes there's just too much exploration and not enough fighting to balance it out. First level it the most egregious example of that. For the last negative, the sound design in the game is pretty weak. Weapon sounds are mostly serviceable but enemy sounds are anything but. Most of them seem to lack any movement sounds, the sound of projectiles flying at or whizzing by you is also missing, so you get very little audio feedback outside of attack sound or enemy voice lines. By far the worst example of this are beam enemies. For the longest time I thought Illuminati enemies made no noise when firing, it took testing it when the enemy was alone and on a level with relatively quiet ambient music. Turns out they do make a sound, it's just so quiet that you will never hear it in normal gameplay. Speaking of music, it's a massive disappointment. Prepare to spend most of this roughly 8 hour game listening to some generic background tunes that doesn't even loop properly, all while you're hopping around and blasting enemies with gibs and blood flying everywhere. Only a handful of arenas get an actual combat track that hypes you up with some of the blandest metal music. Better off just turning music off entirely and blasting your own playlist. I'd mention the story and jokes but honestly there is no story worth speaking off (which is fine) and the jokes are so mild that they'd make Postal 3 proud. While negatives might seem overwhelming, I don't think it's a terrible game, just a mediocre one that could've been fantastic if so many things weren't overlooked in the process. There are some great things, like amazing animation work, gorgeous (for the most part) levels, fairly creative enemy designs. It's not a full price release either. It's a little indie FPS with a solid amount of content and variety that will grant you a few sessions of ripping and tearing. There's also some replay value in the form of hunting down secrets and improving your clear time. The developers clearly have played a fair share of excellent FPS games and know what parts of them are fun, even if mixing them all together didn't work out too well in my opinion. They took on a very ambitious project, fleshed it out, and shipped it without any glaring technical or gameplay issues. I think most of the audience they were aiming for is gonna have a blastm and I personally gained more interest in what else they've made and what they will create in the future.Show moreShow less

If you're even slightly conservative avoid this game like the plague. The developers have a clear political bias and it's on full display here. Disgusting.Show moreShow less
