Who gives a damn about gameplay, balance, netcode, hitboxes or the community when you can fill it with Premium Currencies™, XP boosters™ and Item Bundles™. This is nothing but a shameful window into what's happened to the video game industry. EDIT: I can no longer play this game due to Bethesda shutting down the Johannesburg server.Show moreShow less

Take Quake 3 Arena and throw it in today's craze of arena/champions games with a topping of lootboxes. The gamplay is fast paced and fun enough to make you waste some time until you realize it's full of BS. If you were used to Quake 3 you would remember the old characters like Visor, Doomguy etc. This time they decided to make them different one another. It would create something different if it wasn't that everyone of them starts with a different amount of HP, armor, speed and have a special ability and a passive one. So, basically it's Quake 3 where players can become invisibile (Nyx), have incorporated and legalized wallhack (Visor), have a charge (Scalebearer) or someone that has passive autoregeneration (Blaszkowitz). Add this to the fact that each weapon makes the same amount of damage to everyone, so prepare to unload a full rocket launcher to something that has twice your health and armor without dying, while you have the starting minnow that dies with a simple poke. Yes, you start with only one champion unlocked, the Ranger, the most basic one. While this is unbalanced by itself, if you want to make it fair and use another champion you have to buy it with real money, or rent it for 24 hours by using the usual grinding currency. If you come from the old school of Q3 you will find it both funny and frustrating while the game pushes you towards grinding and buying. There seem to be a lot of cheaters around although I don't think I met one. Also prepare to be hit behind walls a lot, because despite having a great connection the netcode doesn't seem perfect. And while I'm at it, if you want to have a chance, get the lightning gun as soon as you have the chance. It was great in Q3, in QC it's the freaking god of weapons. It has ungodly range and melts away everyone if you point it on them for more than half a second. You will also die so easily by it that it just makes you want to drop every game. Now, take this weapon, give it to Blaszkowitz dual wield ability and do the math yourself. That will be your best choice if you just started playing and don't want to uninstall this game straight away. That's a good way to have some fun for a day or two, granted you have some experience in Q3 or any other merciless fast paced arena shooter, because that's what you have to expect. In conclusion, it would be funny if it was balanced and more close to a classic arena shooter. Unfortunately for today's players if a game doesn't have different champions and lootboxes it doesn't look good. Having a game where everyone is the same, where every weapon makes the same amount of damage to everyone and only personal skills make the difference is too much for today's players. I will still give it a chance again in the future if things become more balanced.Show moreShow less
I have a feeling this game will join the ranks of Warframe and Rainbow Six: Siege as games that have improved over time. This game is slowly getting better and you can tell, theres no more stuttering, theres bots. I can see a comeback for this game Edit: lolShow moreShow less
Update 30 October 2019: After giving the game a solid chance (as a Quake fan) playing 400 hours I finally had to declare it DOA and uninstall it after the Christmas patch in 2018. The issues were getting worse after every patch, such that I could only play a few hours to test each patch and be disappointed at the REVERSE progress of the game. The sound fixes (LOL) of the last patch is horrendous and with the developers continuing to shut down more and more servers, wait time also became ridiculous. Unfortunately this is now a completely dead game since the community managers have disappeared for a year now, player base is at an all time low, performance also worst it has ever been, no professional quality content updates (new map? new champion?) no road-map (or ANY communication) from developers and patches are appearing several months apart. If you are a fan of arena FPS games, try Warfork or wait for Diabotical, both much better than QC. This game has been in development for 5 years and in EA for over 1 year. Nothing in the quality of the engine reflects this. Netcode and hit registration is abysmal for many players. Many are experiencing memory leaks and crashes to desktop.. yet the developers do nothing but release more skins and paywalls. Every game has random hit-reg and enemies pop on to your screen after having damaged you for over 100hp. This is because of the client side hit reg. This netcode negates evasion and positioning due to the large buffer in the netcode combined with client side hit reg favouring the shooter - awful for esports giving rise to many anomalies. I would wait for things to improve but the track record denies hope.. The last year has seen no update of substance except inane ideas like bots and shaky aim for Lightning Gun.. which are then removed and labelled 'progress'. Cheating is rife. Besides this, the people in charge are the same people that drove Quake Live into the ground to make way for this atrocity. I paid to support this game. Money wasted. Abandon hope..Show moreShow less
It would be SO FUNNY if we revived the Arena FPS genreShow moreShow less
To be completely honest, I like Quake Champions, but game issues and strange stuff... Bad engine, performance issues. Matchmaking is bad, no server browser. Champions customizations with ugly shaders, not suitable and stupid. Loot boxes with duplicates, full of silly shaders (even for each weapon). No SDK, no map editor or server tools. I'll still play it, but I really want changes and improvements. After new update game is completely unplayable for me. Now QC freezes PC with any settings. Technical disaster, new updates make it even worse. It's truly painful.Show moreShow less
I have played this game since the Closed Beta Testing, second week after first beta access. This game has gone through leaps and bounds since then, now over a year ago. The Dev team has absolutely put in a lot of work, and it shows from the literal difference I have seen patch after patch. The latest patch, the June 2018 Patch, balanced champion health across the board with Light, Medium, and Heavy champs, respectively, along with some improvements to other aspects of the game. I expect a lot more to change and my recommendation is to pick this game up while it is free. This game is also recommended if you like fast paced and skill based shooters. While the game is still technically Early Access, expect it to be different from the final release. 1. Its an arena shooter, expect you will be less than average the first time you pick it up, especially if you're new to arena fps. 2. Play the game, it is the only way to learn. 3. Check out FrothyOmen's Youtube tutorials on Champions. 4. Join the Quake Discord for additional help from community. 5. After about a month of playing, you will absolutley know if this is the game for you. Bonuses: Every season the maps are udpated with seasonal textures, and vanity items, along with player icons and backgrounds. (santa hats, bunny ears, Spring textures, Snow textures) Note: Most negative reviews of this game are blown out of proportion and are done by people with very few actual gameplay hours in this early access title.Show moreShow less
I don't even know where to start, it's all kind of been said already, hasn't it? The game still has so.. so many issues after such a long time. It feels more like butting up against problems with the technology rather than problems with game design. (Which has its own slew of issues.) Mouse input feels horrible, no raw mouse output option anywhere in the options. Netcode issues out the wazoo. Other arena shooters made by three guys in a basement went from no netcode to some of the best netcode arena FPS games have ever seen in a matter of a few months.. and yet Bethidimax/SaberbuckTooth interactive can't seem to pull it off. Hit detection has major problems even after multiple 'fixes'. Weapon fire delays still present after multple fixes claiming to 'remove the problem' Sound awareness problems, sound directionality is messed up, but you won't hear it anyways because far-far-away is louder than right beside you. Feedback survey emails are sociological studies, not actual feedback attempts. (This means they are more focused on marketing and sales than gameplay) The list really keeps going, google it if you really have to. As somebody pointed out in a discussion, This isn't really Quake. It's called Quake, it has some characters from Quake, its concept is an approximation of Quake.. but the various formulas that made Quake, well.. Quake, is nowhere to be seen. In its place you have Quakes wheels being re-invented for no good reason. You have a loot box and unlock system that strings you along. You have three primary game modes.. one of which you can't even play (1v1/Duel) until you shell out money for a champions pack so you can have at least three champions. (This also happens to be the game mode they are trying their hardest to market) Yes you can play a bunch of rounds, get the favor points and RENT characters for 24 hours.. but frankly, by the time I have enough favor to rent ONE champion (let alone two.) I'm already done with the game. Every champion has different stacks, different speeds, different special abilities and passives, and different movement types. (QA1 movement, Q2 movement, Q3 movement, 'CPMA' style movement, etc etc etc, every one of them is a bad attempt at them and has speed limits.) A 'lore' system that you are supposed to be able to find chunks of background story for the different characters from by finding scrolls in broken pots in game, but after 50+ games, I have found .. two. One I got from the tutorial. A 'runes' sub-game reward.. system, thing. Where you find runes (only in loot boxes.) and they get plotted on a map, and if you do the thing the rune specifies, you get stuff! And nothing else. It's basically achievements you unlock, and then do, and get more favor or maybe a color for your gun/character/etc.. if you find all of them, you unlock a special outfit for the character all those runes were for. (I have yet to see anybody wearing any of them), I'm guessing the amount of time required to do such a thing would be simply put, astronomical. Not only due to the very very VERY slow rate at which you GET the runes, but the sheer number of them per character. A smattering of maps, some of which are vaguely crafted after some of the past classic maps from previous quake titles. Gonna be completely blunt here..I have honestly no idea why anybody thinks any of these things is fun, or even good. I'm not asking anybody to 'clarify' them for me, either. Go be a rabid fanboy somewhere else if you must, but so far this game is underwhelming me more and more with each update since closed beta. And here is why: This game should not still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ suck, thats why. This game should not still be saddled with technical problems after such a long beta period. They claim this game has been in 'development' for a long long time, but don't specifically state when it started.. well, at the rate they fix things, it has been in development since 1985, and a Delorian character DLC is right around the corner. But beyond any of that, even if they started this back when Quake Live was still being supported, why the hell is it using some weird hybrid engine by Saber Interactive?? Every single problem the game has seems to stem from this simple fact. SI has never done a game of this type, scope, or scale, and it seems like they are having major problems making things happen. Let me tell you folks, if I was a game studio and somebody as big as Beth/Id walked in and said 'We want you to make the next Quake competitive title!' The first thing I would say is '♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!' followed quickly by 'We need a crazy good netcode, raw mouse input, high frame rate, and snappy response on everything!' and the first place I would start looking? An Idtech engine. It's literally what they are best known for, for Pete's sake. Instead we get the exact opposite. But man, we got color customization out the ears, rune quests, and piles of stuff to buy from the store! All that stuff works flawlessly! And instead of fixing any of these technology/engine things, lets throw a one million dollar tournament to drum up interest and draw in players on our unfinished, unpolished, painfully annoying to play Arena FPS 'skill' shooter! Uh, right. Nice priorities there, Tim Willits. (How's that working out by the way?) And people wonder why the feedback from Quake fans is terrible? The fans came running, flooding in. clawing at the gates to try the next quake title.. And this is what they got. Told one thing, Sold another, and then lamented at about how 'its not finished yet give it a chance' and told 'it'll get better we promise!' over and over, while painful 'engine based bugs' like 'Your FPS is low, so your guns do a lot less damage.' and 'If you have a laggy network, you take a lot less damage', among other painful bugs people have been running the red flags up about since the closed beta , are just NOW getting fixed. (Kind of. They say they are fixed at least? They don't seem fixed.) Sigh, this could go on forever, lets just wrap this up. ( 'tie it off' might be a better term...) boiled down: Is it Quake? Maybe? In the same way that DOOM RPG is 'DOOM'. Will it scratch the 'Quake 3 arena' or the 'Quake 2 multi-player' or even the 'Quake one/QW multi-player' itch?... kinda.. maybe? If your recollection of those games is basic and bad? Maybe that explains it all. Tim Willits doesn't remember what made Quake, Quake, and this is what results from that. Seeing as how he can't even remember who made what map, and tries to claim credit for things he didn't make (then passively deny/argue about it when shown wrong), that might explain a lot. I was handed my closed beta key by direct invite, and I was given an activation key for steam by somebody who didn't want the game from a bundle. And.. I don't blame them anymore. QC has done one thing, it's reminded people how much they crave Arena FPS.. by not really providing it. If you have the itch, Quake Live is cheaper than the Quake Champions bundles, and at this point, seems to have more active players anyways. ======================================== Note: Updated on 4/28/2020, ugh. ======================================== In the middle of a quarantine fever dream, I thought 'Hey, you know, I have not tested quake champions on win 10..' and I just did a squeaky clean install the other day, so maybe-- No, It's worse. The spatial audio is even dumber now than it was last time I played. I don't know if its changes they made, or how the engine interacts with the windows. I tried Stereo, 5.1, 7.1, HRTF, even tested fiddling with windows sonic for headphones, I even tested three different high end headsets and vast combinations of the above. Nadda, its just broken. I give up. Uninstalled. I'll stick with quakelive for my frag fix.Show moreShow less
