Overall Score: 8.6 / 10 Quality 9/10High quality game (not perfectly optimized for PC) Performance9/10Runs smoothly for me, except for some rare & short fps drops Utility 9/10Crashed once during a cutscene; no bugs experienced; has cloud save Controls 9/10Good controls, but cursor appears when reading docs with pad Gameplay 8.5/10Interesting concept: mixing a game with a short tv series Challenge 8/10Fair challenge on hard mode, but a bit op player-skills; no puzzles Content 8/105-8h + 4x20min tv series; replay value -> decisions that influence the plot Diversity 9/10Shooter, exploration game, a bit of platforming and action series Immersion 9/10A captivating story and interesting fusion between series + game Design 8.4/10Excellent designed mostly but mapping & enemies are a bit generic Visuals 9/10Nice animations/graphics and cool design overall; small enemy variety Sound 9/10Every dialogue has a (localized) voice-over, soundtrack and sfx OK Texts 9/10Great story, enriched with detailed documents and a short tv series Mapping 7/10Some interesting design ideas; a few levels used twice (-> time travel) Interface 8/10Well designed and functional menus, HUD OK Additional Note: Although it's mainly a shooter I recommend playing this game with a pad. Also this game is best enjoyed from the couch due to long cutscenes and the combination with the tv series. I want to recommend this game, but sadly, I cannot. The gameplay is fun, the acting is solid, and what I've seen of the story I am thus far enjoying. The reason I cannot recommend the game is because of the implementation of the live-action episodes. On Xbox One, there is a game pack that will allow you to download the FMV files and play them directly from your HDD. Inexplicably, this is not an option for the PC version of the game. This means you must stream the live-action episodes. If, like me, you live in an internet deadzone and have to use bottom-of-the barrel Internet -- such as 4G hotspot or satellite internet -- then trying to stream 1080p or 4K video is strictly out of the question. I've only managed to get past episode 1, and only just. I have no desire to struggle through constantly buffering video that eats a mountain of bandwidth each time. So, no, I cannot recommend Quantum Break. Not until they make the episodes a downloadable pack, as with the Xbox One version.Show moreShow less

One does not play Quantum Break. This becomes quite evident in the game's vocabulary, preferring to refer to itself as a "show" rather than a "game". The game's format is novel in both senses of the word. Five "acts" separated by four 20 minute live-action episodes showing what happened as a result of the previous choices you made. Those episodes, along with interminable follow-the-character-through-the-environment-whilst-they-explain-the-story-to-you sequences, interspersed with brief moments of mildly inventive third-person shooter combat means that you do not actually play this game, you watch it. You watch it, as the passive spectator you are. Let's cover... combat! The only noticable part of the game that can actually be considered gameplay involves shootouts featuring conveniently placed chest-high cover and your collection of six "time bending" super-powers. Four of those superpowers are limited to simply slowing or stopping time while another two of those superpowers have no discernable effect on time at all. Despite having six of these, you will only regularly use the four which require a single button push, and forget about the other two completely because those other two would actually require you to aim. You will solely reserve aiming for shooting people with your guns. The high point of this game is the graphics. Very pretty. That's where your 70 GB went. The graphical niceties include the 3D scanned likenesses of the real cast members. I'm fairly sure Lance Riddick's own model is accurate down to the pimple's on the back of his neck (which are unreasonably close to the camera at one point which is how I know this...). This reinforces the point that the point of the game is to be looked at, rather than played. In the game, you are required to go to various points to hold a button next to a glowing light in order to upgrade your superpowers. I'm fairly sure this mechanic exists just to get you to look at the marvellous scenery. One thing I'd like to know is if those live-action episodes, are streamed from your hard drive or the internet. For 70 GB, it had better be the former. On the topic of choices, the game has four main "junctions" where you choose between two conflicting major outcomes of the junction decision. The choice you make will alter the course of history itself and lead the game to eventually conclude with wildly different endings... which are all completely identical. That is to say that no decision I made had any impact whatsoever on what happened to the protagonist at any given point. I still ended up doing the exact same things in the same order to reach the same conclusion. The only notable difference is which characters perform any given action. One character seems to exist solely to fill the shoes of the person who would have been there, had they not died moments earlier due to a decision you made. Having played the game twice to encompass all possible choices, I can see no way in which the game is distinguishable from one that is entirely linear. This game is linear; the decisions merely decide whether the paint on the walls is white or snow coloured. You can watch this show if you want, I'll be getting 70 GB worth of hard drive back.Show moreShow less
+ Amazing Story I love story driven games and this one didn't disappoint (I actually watched all of the credits in its entirety) + Episodes in the middle in most movies, tv shows or games, you have no idea why the antagonists of the game do the things they do. The 25 minute show in the middle of each acts succeeded brilliantly in showing the other side of that coin. + The choices of the game Sure, the choices don't have an effect on the ending but they determine the way the story of the game goes through. + Combat Loved the time powers and the final boss battle + Characters Characters from both sides of the game were lovable and the cast was very well chosen - Optimization Horribly optimized (very playable though), so much that the credits scene had framerate dropping to 10. Most areas had a framerate of 35-50, which is very disappointing for a high budget game. My system achieved constant 60 only for a just few areas of the game with high to ultra settings (GTX 970, i7 4770k) - Episodes in the Middle Really hated the fact that the episodes had to be streamed from the internet, they stuttered a lot. (geddit geddit?) - Length Can easily finish the game in less than 10 hours, if you're not going for the 100% Achievements - Combat The cover system isn't that great and because of the short length of the game, the combat part ends just as you were about to master the powers, so that's unfulfilled potential for me All in all, this is an awesome game if you're looking for a great story and can forgive the frame drops and the short(ish) length. Worth it even for the full price (but saving an extra 15 bucks doesn't hurt). ***wow this actually made it to the top, tiny life goals right here, thanks :')***Show moreShow less
Finished Alan Wake 1 & 2 and fell in love with it and wanted to try Remedy's other games. While I find this game decent and did enjoy some of the set pieces, I simply cannot recommend this game for one reason. The checkpoint system is abysmal, and for all those that say it's fine because it is challenging, I have one thing to say. This....is....not....Dark Souls. It is a cinematic action game similar to Uncharted. So dying in the middle of a big epic set piece cause you missed a jump and being thrown back to 10-15 minutes beforehand (sometimes before a mini boss) and dealing with load screens because you have to skip the same repetitive cutscenes is infuriating. In all honesty, Act 4 was where I gave up on the game. You miss one jump and you don't even get a second chance until I went through a mini boss fight, skipped the same cut scene that I've already seen a dozen times, all for just one shot to not screw up the platforming. This game desperately needed a patch to fix this, because in all honesty this absolutely ruined the game for me and made me hate the "cool" cinematic moments. This is no where near as good as similar games in the genere like Uncharted and it is a far cry from Alan Wake or it's sequel.Show moreShow less

Writing? Perfect. Better than Netflix shows. Gunplay? Fun as f. It's like you're in a movie. Science behind it? 10/10. IF you have a brain to comprehend basic quantum mechanics. Cool factor? 22/10. In game story cinematics? Get it on YouTube. Your cutscenes aren't here with the game. You can only stream it. Yes, so every damn time you want to watch that key part of the story, you beg the server for it. The stream is 4K BY DEFAULT so you better have galactic-fleet class internet. Depending on your luck, it can pauses every 2 seconds and tells you you can't steam it. I had to do this on YouTube. This is a hideous way to handle the cinematics with key elements to the story. You can't do this to a game which is super heavy on narratives and make it dependent on an awful streaming service or fluctuations of internet quality, then call it a good game, so despite liking to play it very much, I'm not calling it one. 2 star out of 5Show moreShow less

Warning: Live action episodes are streamed, no option to pre-download them on PC. With Microsoft's track record when it comes to supporting its live services this game will one day will lose half of its content, and it's not exactly optional if you want to enjoy the full story. If you buy, play it, you might not get a chance a few years in the future. Potential deal breakers: 1) Performance is abismal at resolutions above 1080p even on high end hardware (I'm playing it on an i7 6700k, GTX 980ti with infinite amounts of DDR4), upscaling must be enabled, which results in a blurry soup of cutting edge rendering effects. Why even bother trying to make it pretty? Expect hard frame rate dips down to 20, very often, especially when you'd need it to be smooth: action intense parts. 2) Always on Motion Blur, adds more smearing to the already upscaled picture, you know.. for a better cinematic experience! If it offends your senses keep a bucket nearby during your play sessions. 3) Gameplay is hardly responsive (the jittery frame rate contributes immensely) and the shooty parts are absolutely unenjoyable. 4) Content was QA'd by monkeys: 3 hours in and I wonder why do I even bother trying to use the assault rifle or the SMG, if you want to quickly dispatch of anything you're better off dealing lead with the heavy pistol, just remember to shoot twice, and only in the head. Alternatively if the AI decides not to flank you, feel free to shot them 10 times on the same foot, they will make sure to expose it again exactly where it was, so you don't have to make an effor to aim. If I didn't go past 2 hours in I'd consider a refund. What a shame, Alan Wake was thoroughly enjoyable in its format. This time around they definitely went a bit too far, and in the process they forgot that there was supposed to be a game underneath all the story. Cannot in good faith recommend this to anyone used to playing PC games, it's hard to say if it was just bad (I can't play the console version) or it's another poor PC port. Also, what was microsoft thinking? This game was supposed to be one of the showcase pieces for UWP, and this is the quality the let out of the door? Thanks god I only lost 9 bucks on this, had I paid full price it would've hurt pretty bad.Show moreShow less
