I pretty much only play turn-based games. I love challenging games. I'm old school and played games when you had to read manuals and stuff to even get started. But this game takes it to a new level. It's like the developers wanted to purposely confuse people rather than just not bothering to implement any QOL. The little information that's presented in the UI is scattered across a million different screens. The 'difficulty' gauge for missions is actually composed of multiple different things (mission objective, skulls, faction strength, number of floors) with no real telling how they all interact and how difficult it really will be. Wait, which faction am I siding with? If you change your inventory it'll change it back to the default. Why is this not just presented as two different missions rather than each mission needing you to select the mission first and then decide which side you're on? I could go on and on because the entire game is like this. There's literally a way to land at a station to begin trading but it does nothing over the default 'fast trading'. Why is it there? No clue. Besides the horrendous UI and the fact that the game requires you to look up all of its obscure mechanics, modifiers, and general jank and cruft on the wiki (or google it and read through a 2 year-old Reddit thread about an older version of the game and hope it still works that way), the game just isn't fun. Combat honestly sucks. 90% of the game seems to revolve around just peeking around corners by always saving 1AP so you can jump back if there's something there. Your spacebar key will get worn out by skipping turns so often because the core gameplay and AP system are so primitive that they're simultaneously tedious (move, skip turn, move, skip turn) and offer no skill expression. There are no real hard choices you need to make to effect the best outcome, just need to make sure you keep doing the tedious skip turn and peek dance and other such things because if you forget you might turn a corner and get 1-shot by 3 guys around the corner. That's not strategy. There's no thought in it. It's just pure busywork and that's the core of the gameplay. Controls are clunky and unresponsive. UI feedback, effects, etc. are unintuitive and can be easy to miss. The sprites are animated so poorly and move so fast it feels like I'm playing an old DOS game on modern hardware so the game is running at 10x the speed as intended. There are way better games than this. I've tried to get into this game multiple times and always go back to other ones that do everything it does and with their own niches. This game is just tedium and confusion in an ugly package. Sucks because I want to like it. I like that devs still make games like this. But this one is just not good and now that it's out of EA I don't think its fundamental problems will ever be fixed. ------- Edit after dev response: I'm giving the game another try and not much seems to be fixed at all. In fact I had to read the patch notes to see what was supposed to even be improved. The difficulty gauges are still just a mish-mash of a bunch of different criteria that the player is supposed to put together in their heads somehow to understand how difficult the mission is. If that's what you're going for then fine but at least explain what each criterion means -- even just for your own sake so new players don't bounce off of it (and for the record, I think the mission difficulty meter being composed of a bunch of different criteria is ridiculous anyway). Anyway, so I load into the game and go to select a mission. I find one that I think I can handle (2 skulls, conquest, 3 floors). It's against RealWare. The game tells me they have Technology Level 1. Ok, cool, except I have no idea what that means in concrete terms off the top of my head. So I now need to back out of the mission selection screen, go to the Stock Market screen, click RealWare, click the Technology button, and see what items they have at Technology Level 1. Ok, some basic clothes and stuff and their weapons will be the AZ-96 War Echo. I mouse over the War Echo and see that its stats. It says it does 23-36 damage. Does it have other fire modes? Don't know, so I need to go the wiki to find out. Turns out that it has two fires modes. It also says it uses .42 ammo, which I assume will do Blunt damage like the 9mm bullets I have. Oh, nope! Good thing I checked! .42 ammo actually does Piercing damage, because 9mm bullets apparently punch people and .42 bullets stab them. I didn't know a different caliber would change the physical properties of a bullet so much. How silly of me. Good thing I checked so I didn't optimize my armor against Blunt damage! Oh, and the AZ-96 also has 20% armor penetration according to the wiki which the game doesn't tell me at all. Very experienced players can laugh at me and say how silly I am and I'm such a noob etc. but that does not excuse having to go through multiple screens to see basic info (including backing out of the mission entirely and having to basically set it all up again) just to ultimately have to go to the wiki to find out more unintuitive but crucial information just to get a mission started. (And also, please, FFS, don't do silly things like have a different bullet caliber have an entirely different damage type. It's just nonsensical and leads to the existing issue of too many damage types in the game.) Another gameplay annoyance that makes no sense to me: there is directional sight so players can only see in a cone in front of them, but turning requires zero AP so to make sure nobody moved up behind you you need to keep right-clicking all around as you move through the level to see everything. Why is there directional sight if turning is free? It just requires the extra busywork of constanttly right-clicking in every direction.Show moreShow less

This game seems amazing, but sadly i cannot play it. There's poisonous pools that just kill you if you walk in them, and i can't see green. Extremely frustrating. Do not play if you are colorblind.Show moreShow less

loved the game at the start but every update that comes out it feels like the game is punishing you for interacting with its systems, to even attempt a story mission you'll have to run like 50 normal missions collecting the best possible gear and as many meds as you can, usually just to get stun locked to death and in the rare occasion you aren't? well mid and late game you need to have top tier armor for every faction, day dream chems? better have armor you can only get via working for...day dream chems...otherwise one shot by chem nades...Sunlight Coven? well you need rad protection! where do you get that from? that's right, Sunlight Coven. But unless you are HELPING these factions you don't get the armor to COUNTER them and they don't tech up fast enough. Meaning your best armor does nothing against them, so the best tactic is going but naked with an axe, killing one, then using their gear. but that ISN'T FUN, I want to use my big cool guns and cool gear, but I know I'll lose it to idk, a naked experiment throwing a cyrogrenade at me or some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like that. personally, I can't recommend this game anymoreShow moreShow less

I like what this game has to offer, but the game is more frustrating than fun in its current state. Whenever you die, its usually so sudden that there is nothing you can do to rectify the situation. I like games that don't hold your hand, but this game feels like its pushing you down a staircase and expecting you to enjoy the experience. Open a door and find a sentry on the other side? Dead. Check a corner and immediately get annihilated by something that shouldn't have a clear line of sight on you? Dead. Step in a poisonous puddle that you can't even see because it blends in with the floor texture? Dead. These features are fine, but there is usually no way to survive and rectify these situations, even with high-tier armor. To elaborate more on my experience: - Why do I need to eat a chicken sandwich every time I enter a new room or otherwise starve to death? You'll find enough food on the guys you kill, but why do we need to eat full-course meals in such a small window of time? I'm here to kill, scavenge, and leave, not eat before and after every firefight. - There's pretty much no point in carrying extra medicine because of how lethal wounds are. Wearing good armor is ideal which is realistic, but there is no purpose in bringing in your own medicine other than the basics. If a weapon is capable of bypassing/destroying your armor, you're as good as dead and having the proper medicine on you means nothing. - Why can I not leave and forgo finishing the contract? If I enter a facility and realize I am fighting something above my weight class, I should be able to just leave. Instead, my character is obligated to fulfill the contract even if it means certain death before they can consider leaving. - To add onto the previous point, why am I obligated to do a contract? Why can't I just raid a location for the sake of loot? More often than not, I'll be in possession of a full bag of loot that I want to leave with, but I can't leave until I "complete the objective." - There is no extraction in this extraction RPG. Once you finish the main objective, it just boots you out of the level and back to the ship. The game calls itself an extraction RPG, but there is no extraction, the level just ends. I was expecting levels to end with a return to the shuttle or a dropship pickup, but instead the level ends in a mundane loading screen after completing the objective. - Why is everything on a gamble-barter system? Let me earn some money and go buy what I need. I don't want to gamble for the equipment I need, just let me go purchase stuff and engage in some commerce. Game shows potential, but is not an enjoyable experience right now.Show moreShow less

Before I review this I just want to say i think this is, at the very least, the start of a very good game. But it slowly becomes a very repetitive game that has a big problem with with both you and the enemy one shooting each other. I really want this game to be good and i want to share a few things that I think might be good for the game. There are a lot of great things that this game does especially early game. Damage you take is high but not crazy high, structure damage is a great way to make staying in one place for too long a bad idea, and having PMCs & classes a great way to customize your character the way you want to take them into a mission. Even though i have a lot of good thoughts about this game and i put in a lot of time there are an equal amount of problems i have with the game, some stemming from the pros i gave it. For example the high damage being good only really works for most of the normal enemies but there are some exceptions that no matter what i did i would get one shot and if you're not prepared. Normally i would not criticize this to much because this is a game about preparing for the mission your given and under preparation will kill you. However there are early game missions that will have enemies (often Quasimorphed enemies) that often times two or one shot me to this day, despite wearing (to my knowledge) the best armor. Another example of this case is what I'm currently dealing with now. There are human enemies that are wearing the best weapons & armor, the armor they're wearing is (to my knowledge) the best for blocking the type of weapon they and I are using yet both of us get one shot by said weapon. So I basically have to hope i shoot first and that 2 of them aren't in the same room which happened a lot. Something that might remedy this is if there was a way to throw grenades and close doors on the same turn, have a way to draw them out of a room, or slightly raise the armors protection. though I'm not sure if this is a great way of fixing this problem. Another Problem that the game has is that the game gets slightly repetitive, though the game looks good there aren't a lot of real differences between them. For insistence the space station map would be cool if the outside space would damage you or kill you so you would need to bring space equipment with you, or in the jungle there were traps that are hard but not impossible to see. The mission variety is also kind of meh with the exception of defense being the only real different one. It would be cool if you had rescue missions were you could break someone out and have them fight with you out or theft missions were the payout was better but there was no faction you were doing it for. One i would personally like to see is, since you are traveling through space with a few faction that don't like you, you could have to do a defense mission on your ship with some of you're stuff on the line but you'd be able to loot everything they had. The ship storage is really annoying to deal with. It has no way to easily sort it and it's small (just like me ): ), and though I think it might be by design. not being able to sell & buy stuff makes it even harder to sort things. something that would be cool is if you could use some of the random parts you had to upgrade your ship to make it faster. One last thing i can think of is that the Quasimorphed enemies would be a lot scarier and would warrant there one shot statues if maybe they were bigger and destroyed walls and obstacles as it moved to get you. And you could reserve some of the rarer drops for them and even put them in assassination missions. I REALLY want this game to be good so I could recommend it to other people. But as of right now, even though I'm willing to keep playing it and am willing to revisit and change this review, I'm pretty sure anyone I recommend this to wouldn't play it for any longer than maybe 2 or 3 play sessions or after losing there main PMC.Show moreShow less
