Love the game. But have a suggestion for the devs- with all the rain on the farm why the heck do I have to constantly water my crops? It is raining for a full day and my crops will be bone dry. There will be mud on the ground and still my crops are bone dry.Show moreShow less
Edit 2/28/2025: I don't know how 800+ people have read this review--but understand this review is old now. There have been 2 updates since this review was written and a few of the the problems listed in the con section have been worked on. At this point please try the game out for yourself. Let me explain why I'm not recommending the game, despite having played for 150+ hours and earning all achievements: This game isn't an Early Access game. It is considered a full release, and where I live is priced around $25 USD. However, there are SO many glitches and problems. I would never feel OK suggesting to someone to buy this game full price. However, despite that, I really think this game would've been an amazing Early Access title. It's heckin' fun. There's plenty to do and a lot of animals to take care of, so if you somehow happen to get this game and enjoy other farming sim titles, you'll be well taken care of with this title. You'll just have to get used to the various glitches and problems this game has. Pro and Con list: Pro: - The game is 100% fun. I enjoy the idea of being a homesteader with nothing but a cart and two chickens to my name. It's a great feeling when you expand the ranch and get new animals. So early, mid, and even late game is pretty fun. - There are world quests that you can do for extra cash if you get in a bind. And some of them are repeatable. Very helpful for new players who might've accidentally spent too much money too fast. - The world is pretty big. Even the areas on the edges of the map can be traveled to and explored. There is wildlife almost in every section too. - Dynamic weather. The torrential rain and lightning storms are so well done. I wish the storms in this game could be ported (somehow) to OUTBRK, the storm chasing game. The lightning storms are so intense! - Lots of different animals. I'm happy that this game has so many different animals to ranch. Sometimes these farm sims say that they have a lot of animals to place on your farm, and then you realize it's like 3 different animals, and you can only have a limited number of them. This game does it right. - The aesthetic of the town is cozy. Feels right at home for a rural gamer like me who grew up on the homestead. - You can go hunting. It's not fleshed out, but I revel in it's simplicity regardless. - Multiplayer compatibility. Not enough games have this, and this is one major reason why I personally bought the game. And I'd say it was well worth it. Definitely fun with friends. Cons: - The glitches. Oh man, the glitches. I could write a whole list of problems, but I'll highlight just a few that perpetually bugged me the entire 150+ hours I played, so potential buyers can get a feel for what I'm talking about: 1. Graphical glitches. The lighting system is really strange and when the sun goes up or goes down, the entire game looks weird and runs hard. My computer exceeds the required hardware and software and it still chugs when it starts to get dark or light. 2. Milking animals can get you stuck if you're next to a wall. You'll have to restart from a previous save when this happens to you. If you're in multiplayer, just get a friend to grab the animal/bucket from you. 3. Chicks will stop hatching from fertilized eggs after a while. There is no fix for this as of yet that I could find. You'll get eggs that have a dark mark in the ovoscope and read as "fertilized egg" but it doesn't matter how long you wait for them to hatch, they still just won't hatch for some reason. Even taking apart the coops and building new or different ones don't resolve the problem. 4. If you drive off road and try to drive over rocks, you could potentially get your car stuck forever on said rocks. And even the small rocks can get you forever stuck. Even the "Flip vehicle" command doesn't help when you get REALLY stuck. 5. Dogs and cats are pretty bugged. Sometimes if you have two or more of the same type of animal, they will get stuck in a corner. Whichever animals was the first animal in that corner will get stuck forever (cause they got pushed so far into the corner) and will never be able to eat from a food bowl or trough. As you can expect...this means they end up dying. And it definitely upset me the first time this happened to me as the animal in question was named after a real life one I had growing up. The emotional trauma was my own fault, of course. - No quick way to transport goods. You'll HATE seeing a stack of 6 cheese pretty quick when you realize you have to manually move products one-by-one onto the flatbed. And just cause the game is depicting real life, doesn't mean the game should feel TOO real. - The targeting system sucks in third person. I'm not talking about the gun reticle. I'm talking about the UI for grabbing and picking up stuff. If you look at something behind you, or to the sides, your character is delayed be 1 - 2 seconds, and completely moves your targeting reticle. This means that if you were trying to pick up something, there's a chance you'll miss and pick up something else nearby. And I frickin' HATE it. XD - Updates for hotfixes and patches are really slow, of non-existant. For a lot of the problems and glitches I ran into, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to fix certain things (such as the game not wanting to run at all once time, but I figure that out eventually), and a lot of problems I was having seemed to be problems from 1- 2 years old. So, buyer be warned--I don't think the devs are considering fixing the game. I think it's a "leave it as-is" state. - World feels a little empty. The world is big, and very beautiful, but there doesn't seem to be many npcs to talk to. And there are a lot of areas with nothing in them. There's even a little shack that looks like you should be able to fish, but I didn't see anything fishing related there. - You will HATE driving in this game. Trust me. XD BUT, you will eventually get used to it. After a while it gets easier. - No BGM or ambiance. Which means sometimes sudden lightning storms and suddenly getting attacked by a predator can really freak you out because of how loud they can be. There is a radio station on the vehicles to listen to and a radio from the old house you can keep--but the channels aren't very interesting to listen to. Overall: I really do enjoy this game a lot. I wouldn't have played the game for this long if I actually hated it. I just don't think $25 is a fair price for the problems that come with the game. I really hope one day they fix a lot of issues (and add more stuff to the game) cause I really DO love the game. It's just that it's also a bit of a headache in it's current state. So, if someone bought the game for you--Totally give it a go first before asking for a refund. Also, definitely pick it up if it happens to be on sale for $7 USD. Cause it's definitely worth a try at that price.Show moreShow less
I have played 80 hours at the time of this review, this is what I have learned: I will start with what I dislike about it. You cannot cook, process, game meat or goat meat. And there is no smokehouse, which makes no sense, it should be in the game. To be able to make smoked meats just comes with ranching. Regarding meats: Deer meat could be made into venison roasts, hamburgers, and jerky and not just sold as game meat. Bear meat and goat meat are undesirable so those two make sense not to process to sell. Pelts, why are pelts and hides not in the game? We could sell pelts and hides to the vendors the same way we sell them processed foods. Roads/pathways why are these not in the game? We should be able to make roads around our plot and pathways. Why aren't all the possible oil sites on the map as darker areas? That is so annoying. Speaking of the map, why in Southwest cant we pin on the map? I walked half of the map looking for my vehicle after going hiking for bees because the map doesn't show your vehicle nor can you mark the map like you can in legacy. My vehicle is still out there somewhere, I gave up looking for it and bought another one (and no recall vehicle button either). Why is the newest map Southwestern so barren and void of animals, bees, trees, a town, etc? It is like the devs said "You want a new area, sure, here ya go" and gave a barren map and said "Have at it". It feels like no thought or love went into it at all. And what is up with Southwestern's dust storms constantly? Southwestern was just no fun at all to play. And hardly any color at all, you can barely pick out a fox or wolf (on the very rare occasion you do get to see one) They blend right in to the washed out faded out brush. And why are bees so scarce on both the legacy and the Southwest maps? And why do they not respawn? Why does nothing respawn? It is ridiculous. Why don't trees respawn in the wild? I understand why they don't respawn on the farms, the game is designed for us to plant, makes sense. If you aren't going to have them respawn in the wild, at least let us plant to keep it repopulated and not look so desolate and barren. Why is there no indicator above animals heads (needs milked/milked) because milking in the fenced in outdoor pens, once they are milked and run back into the crowd you waste so much time trying to decipher which have been milked and which haven't. At least make tethers as to where we can tether them to the fences to keep them separated. And a male and female indicator would be nice as well (especially on the babies). Signs, why can we not make smaller signs, we can make the large ones which is better than none, but I would like to have ones about half that size. Building (or lack thereof) in my 40 plus years of gaming, I have never seen such a lack luster, pretty much non existent blueprint book (flyer pamphlet really). In order to have furniture, decor, lamps, rugs, anything you are forced to use one of the prebuilts. And then you cannot arrange any of it to your liking because nothing in the game has interaction with most objects outside of farming. Why can you not pick up and move anything, especially things we do build (like a building, bookcase, flower pots, curing station, etc) you have to tear it all down and rebuild it. Why is there no grid for building? Almost nothing "snaps" in, you have to fight with the mouse to do your best to line things up. And we have glass in the game, but we cannot add glass to our windows, what the heck is that all about? Unless you want huge greenhouse windows as house windows, your only 2 options are open holes with no glass or an add on that is wooden that when closed looks like a condemned boarded up house and when opened looks like someone took house shutters and installed them wrong. Very poor design. Large craters that cannot be levelled or filled in (which wastes a lot of build room) I have 2 on my property that look like gigantic meteor's forged holes on my plot and I cannot do anything about them and I cannot build over them. A terrain tool (like a hoe) would be useful. The riding mower is useless, I have grass to my knees and it does not cut grass at all anywhere on my plot. And no raising or lowering of the blade, and the speed, I can crawl faster than this thing drives, even if it did work, there are no speeds on it and it would take days to mow the plot. Useless garbage add on really. We need a large tractor mower that actually cuts grass and goes faster. Gathering poop is a nightmare especially inside the pens. It would have been so much easier to have a composter in or near the pens that auto collects the poop. And when holding a basket in the coops or near them, it should just auto collect the eggs. I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten stuck inside these pens trying to get poop and eggs. Makes the game not fun at that point. It is 2025 and developers seem to care less and less. It is quality of life things that keep these games alive and get recommended more often than not. It is the lack luster that loses its player base. I know there is more of the bad things (believe me) but lets get into the good now. The sounds, the sound effects are on point, one of the top 10 in the games I have played like this. The cycle of life, from buying, to breeding, to the pregnancy, to the birth, to the babies, to the adults, to the milking, shearing, checking for fertile eggs, the auto feeders and watering, the processing and selling of your goods, all really good stuff. Pretty well done in those areas. Even the crops and greenhouse, I must put in the good things, the cycles are pretty good as well. From tilling to fertilizing, to seeding, to growing, to harvesting, to selling. Not bad at all really. And the final good I must say is that legacy is the one I would play, save your money and don't buy Southwestern, you'll be disappointed. While Legacy is lacking a lot of features, it is by far superior to Southwestern. I just wish we could have more than 1 lot at a time on legacy. I would make one plot my actual ranch and the other plot a tree orchard with bees and have 3 more crop plots to use. Legacy has a pin able map, more wildlife, an actual town (while not interactive) it is there and is esthetically pleasing compared to Southwester's 1/4 mile barren road with like 5 buildings. Legacy has a police like station, a post office, stores, food places, plus the 5 or so buildings that you actually do interact with (like I said, an actual town). The only thing I think it is missing is some NPC's just aimlessly walking around the town lol. Knowing all of these things, if you choose to buy this game, know that it is worth the $5 when it is on sale for the legacy (base game). And that, I will recommend. And lastly, it is a shame the modding community abandoned any further projects for this game after only just a handful (quite literally) of mods made. There is so much potential and fun things and quality of life improvements and building pieces and just so much (a lot that I have mentioned) for mod devs to play around with and create to make this game really get the love it deserves. But after seeing and playing Southwestern, I understand why the modding community said "Eh, why bother" Because it feels like the game devs didnt. I get it. Its just a shame.Show moreShow less
I bought Ranch Simulator in early access with the promise that it would grow into a fully fleshed-out game. For two years, I waited through minor updates and LONG stretches of SILENCE hoping that the developers, Toxic Dog, and publisher, Excalibur Games, would deliver. Instead, we get a PAID DLC that LOCKS gameplay features behind a PAYWALL rather than being part of the base game we already funded. Ranch Simulator was NEVER a complete game, but it had potential. That potential is now officially dead. Instead of meaningful updates that expand the base experience, they’re charging extra for what should have been a core part of development. Now I've seen anyone criticizing this decision is being silenced and banned from discussions. I didn’t back an early access game just to be strong-armed into paying more for features that should have been part of its development. I paid expecting a game that would be developed, not ABANDONED in favor of DLC cash grabs. This move is a blatant slap in the face to those of us who supported this game from the beginning. This shows the true colors of Toxic Dog and Excalibur Games. Ranch Simulator should be considered a FAILURE of a game and a warning to future buyers. DO NOT BUY unless you enjoy paying extra for a game that was never finished. Edit: Still haven't played this game since. GOOD RIDDANCE. Still not finished. Never will be.Show moreShow less

BEWARE IF YOU PLAY THIS. This game will continue to run after you close it, in a hidden background, that will count for your time played. The devs did this so that you will always hit the 2 hour minimum that will make it non-refundable. So be weary if you buy this to close steam entirely after if you intend on getting a refund, otherwise it will run in the background and these scumbags will get your money. So sad.Show moreShow less
My dog Axel saved me from a bear, then my gf and I started killing every bear in the game out of retribution. R.I.P. Axel, no bear will remain alive buddy.Show moreShow less
great game but devs are more worried about making paid dlc than fixing basic game mechanics like vehicles feel like your driving on ice.Show moreShow less
So after 27 hours between the Original Version and Unstable Branch I have to recommend this game. Alot of improvements came with the upgrade and Unstable Branch, has a much smoother feel overall. I will list the positives and negatives and my personal thoughts. *** POSITIVES *** 1. Very Relaxing and chill game. 2. The animals are thought out well, you actually have to care for them in order for them to become healthy. 3. Alot of fun and different ways to make money. 4. Graphics with the Unreal 5 update are awesome. 5. Crops are very thought out as well, takes time, and care to get the best healthy yield. 6. Very stressfree, no hard or painful puzzles or quests. 7. Allows you to actually run your own Ranch and interact on a personal level with the animals and land. 8. Much better and more personal than farming simulator in my opinion. 9. Different Stores and Sell Points depending on the items you want or the items you are trying to sell. *** NEGATIVES *** 1. Vehicle Handling is absolutely horrible, every vehicle almost feels it is on ice skates. 2. Small Trailer slides from side to side like its literally on ice and that causes you to loose control and wreck sometimes. 3. All trailers have similar issues. 4. Wild Animals act as though they have severe ADHD. Very predictable and spawn in generally the same areas. 5. Map is very small 6. Tree cutting animations are very simplistic. 7. Economy is mildly broken and fixed. 8. Limited amount of Vehicles and Trailers. 9. Hunting Rifle which I assume since it shares the same Caliber as the Revolver is a Henry 357 Lever Action has a very weird First Person animation. 10. Some of the movement seems buggy at times. For example when you are trying to pick up eggs or clean up chicken poo your character sometimes does a shuffle dance when your trying to focus in on the object. *** MY SUGGESTIONS *** 1. Re-work Vehicle handling metas 2. Re-work Trailer handling metas 3. Add additional Vehicles/ Trailers 4. Smooth out Player Movements 5. Fix the very dark lighting inside some of the stores 6. Total Overhaul and re-work of economy. Prices should fluctuate off of simulated supply and demand. For example gas prices should fluctuate and in turn the price for oil will adjust accordingly. 7. Shotgun should be added 8. Fishing would be really neat if thought out and done correctly 9. Increase map size by 2 or 3 times its current size. With that add additional properties or buisnesses you could purchase such as a restaurant, butcher, garden center, ect. 10. Add more AI owned businesses and AI people. 11. Add Vehicle Damage. I feel some people drive around recklessly because there is no consequence for doing so. 12. Increase Vehicle Prices. 13. Add a Employee Management System that allows you to hire and manage Employees. (PLEASE dont make it like the travesty another Farm type game did) 14. Improve tree cutting animations 15. Increase Wild Life Amount thay spawn and have them spawn randomly around the map so it can not be telegraphed. 16. Animals should die if hit by a vehicle.... currently you just bounce off them. 17. Add ability to make Wine, Bourbon, Vodka, Moonshine. Would be really cool since we already have grapes in there. Overall this a great game, I know it is in the early stages still but it already has come a very long way from its start. It is relaxing, fun, and gives you a sense of pride when you reach a certain point. I highly recommend extended the day and night time to the highest it will go, because you hit a certain point that there frankly is not enough time in the day to tend to all the animals and your ranch. That is why having a functional Employee Management system would help those of us that Ranch Solo...... Be well my friends and Ranch On!!!!!!!Show moreShow less
was a good game with some improvements needed, but now its just bare bones with everything being a DLC when it should have been a part of the game we paid for, honestly a massive dissapointment and if I had known the money grab route, would never had bought the game in the first place, Aimless and empty. no contentShow moreShow less
