Judgment? More like Judgemental. This game is a complete waste of time and an embarrassment to the Yakuza series it spun off from. If you're looking for an engaging story, compelling characters, or satisfying gameplay, look elsewhere. First off, you play as Takayuki Yagami, a disgraced lawyer turned private detective. He’s supposed to be this complex, morally gray character, but he comes off as a dull, self-righteous bore. The game kicks off with Yagami investigating a series of murders where the victims have their eyes gouged out. Spooky, right? Wrong. The narrative plods along at a snail's pace, filled with pointless side quests and tedious detective work that make you want to gouge your own eyes out from boredom. Yagami’s former client, Shinpei Okubo, who was acquitted of murder, is now accused of another killing and arson. Surprise, surprise—Yagami decides to dig into the case. This leads him to the ruthless yakuza and the corrupt ADDC (Advanced Drug Development Center). The so-called 'twists' and 'turns' in the plot are laughably predictable. You’d have to be brain-dead not to see them coming from a mile away. The big reveal? The murders are linked to a secret Alzheimer’s drug called AD-9, developed at the ADDC. The drug is supposed to cure Alzheimer’s but has the nasty side effect of turning patients into murderers. Dr. Shono, the lead scientist, is behind the killings, using homeless people and other expendables as test subjects. And guess who’s protecting him? The game’s main antagonist, Kuroiwa, a corrupt cop who’s as one-dimensional as they come. In the end, Yagami and his ragtag team of misfits expose the truth and bring Shono and Kuroiwa to justice. Wow, what a shocker. Yagami clears Okubo’s name, but not before the game drags you through hours of boring, repetitive gameplay, with combat that feels like a watered-down version of Yakuza’s fighting system. The courtroom drama elements are half-baked and lack any real tension or excitement. The side characters are forgettable, the dialogue is cringeworthy, and the attempts at humor fall flat. The game tries to tackle serious themes like justice and redemption, but it does so with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. The end result is a story that’s neither engaging nor thought-provoking, just a tedious slog. In conclusion, Judgment is a failure on all fronts. It’s a poor imitation of the Yakuza series, with none of the charm, depth, or excitement. I don't care who I spoil this for because, trust me, you’re not missing anything. Save your time and money for a game that’s actually worth it. Judgment is a judgmental mess that should have never seen the light of day.Show moreShow less

TLDR this feels like the Yakuza 3 of the modern dragon engine. Get it only if you feel like you'd want to beat it to play lost judgement, or you're totally out of content from other RGG studio games and you just want a fun lil romp through a reused kamurocho again. 4 main issues The story is both overly drawn out and rushed. So many things fall in place in the last 2 chapters that it's kind of insane how much still isn't captured. Characters and their stories are rushed so quickly that it's just impossible to care about the story. You'll also see a lot of the plot twists coming if you've played RGG studio games and/or have watched crime dramas, but the game spins its wheels for the first half so the pace is insanely numbing. The worse addition is the Keihin Gang, which does nothing but make the act of moving through the story even more bland, as you tackle group after group, and fight the same reused bosses over and over. On the other hand, since we're not Yakuza anymore, the need for self-righteousness is through the roof. The constant enforcement of one objective best morality means there's no gray area to discuss or look at. They're either all good people, redeemable bad people, or utter psychopaths, which is why the ending feels like a rushed mess. It makes for a messy story with a lot of moral conveniences.Again, it kinda feels like they adapted some TV/Move plot and so the twists mean that sensitive issues are handled poorly or just brushed over to keep the plot moving. It really does have some high points, and the story does try to raise the tension and spectacle, and resolve some of the characters issues, it just does so gracelessly. The combat. It makes Yakuza 0/Kiwami feel like a flash in a pan, where RGG essentially reset their combat experience when moving to the dragon engine. Like Y6 and YK2, Physics and hitboxes are super janky, with really odd animations that feel like everyone's flailing around a lot. Almost every difficult "rage" attack your enemies do can be easily avoided, or is impossible to dodge since it either comes from off screen or in the middle of your attack string so you can't easily cancel out. It's simplistic and the upgrades you get are mostly EX actions. Extreme EX mode feels half baked, and I really don't like using it since it makes the combat incredibly spammy and easy, and I don't want to look at more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ EX actions. The EX actions are way too long, being long, elaborate, multi-camera angle shots of the attack, which is cool once, but quickly wears out since you do them so many times. Mortal wounds ends up just being an annoyance rather than an interesting addition that forces new choice dynamics on you. The 2 styles feel like a waste of time since there's so little depth to the whole scheme, and for the most part the same problems from Y6 are still here. Maybe it gets better in Lost Judgement, I'll find out soon. Also the extract system isn't fun and I used none of them aside from the mandatory one throughout my playthrough. They are unnecessary. The characters. For the most part, very good, but also an abundance of irritating, bland or stupid moments which make them look like weird caricatures of people that end up making the story even more shallow. The core 4 members are mostly good, but the main problem is the way everyone doesn't seem to align with any form of power level. Characters that are seemingly strong/rich/smart/cunning whatever, have almost no impact on the story at its most crucial moments since it just seems to let Yagami do everything, except be a woman. Yagami is portrayed a bit too much like a bad TV protag, in the sense that Yagami's flaws or shortcomings are never an issue in the core story or gameplay that feel like you resolve when you play through the game. It just feels like it's there for drama, where Yagami mopes around a lil and someone cheers him on, then when yagami really needs to step up, it all falls in place. You wonder if they wanted to do a Y5 and have 4 campaigns, one for each core member. The genre. It feels constantly stuck between wanting to be a Detective game and a Yakuza game. The awful tailing and chasing sections just make me want to sleep. There's no challenge or even risk to most of these. You just have to wait and it's tedious. The other detective stuff like the drone and evidence searching feels half baked, and at one point I was stuck for 5 minutes not realising you have to choose the WRONG answer for time to progress and the real target to appear. Just bizarro ♥♥♥♥ like that. A lot of the sidegames are underwhelming and reused from other RGG games anyway. Like the yakuza games, we have whacky sidequests, over-the-top combat and lots of goofball moments to resolve conflicts. I'm not really sure what RGG want from a detective game. It's tonally jarring, and Yagami seems so serious sometimes I honestly feel like i'm watching a body double when he pulls out a line saying "I'm all fished out" when he solves case involving fish and sashimi. RGG studios clearly want to talk about justice, the law and morality, but the plot, tone and genre make it impossible to take it seriously. the idea of Morality isn't binary black and white would work with a darker, shadier character than Yagami to explore. It's not to say the core characters don't do bad things, it's just the framing makes it impossible to discuss the bad things they do, like when they entrap some dude by luring him with another character. It's all for the "truth and justice" ™. For example, something brought up multiple times is Yagami's rent. It's just jankily handled. I had over a million yen early on, and I wanted to pay it off, but I had to max out 2 friends, and the rent thing is never really resolved, It ends up making one of Yagami's only flaws (that's he's a broke detective), into a non-issue for the story and gameplay. I see a lot of cool ideas, and if this was the first game from a studio, or with a lot less funding, I'd probably outright recommend a try. But it's not. It's unpolished, and the script needs a few more do-overs to fix the pacing. The gameplay feels like it's constantly kneecapping the story, and the other way around. It genuinely gets as boring as Yakuza 3 at points, and I just wanted to quit, but I finished the core story and did a bunch of the side content so that I could at least learn a bunch going into its sequel, but I don't think I'm ever going to replay this. Hey, maybe Lost:Judgement's combat will be incredible.Show moreShow less
