Our Verdict
The dark horse nobody backed that outran the field
In 2019, nobody expected Remnant: From the Ashes to land. No big-publisher marketing muscle, a pitch that read like a Frankenstein splice. And yet: roughly two months out it cleared a million copies, the base game crossed 1.7 million inside a year, and by the end of 2021 the series had passed 3 million in total sales. That haul blew past Gunfire Games' internal expectations — the team itself admitted to being genuinely surprised. It is the textbook word-of-mouth dark horse, one player pulling in the next, becoming one of 2019's loudest sleeper hits.
That commercial success was not luck.
A Metacritic 78, an OpenCritic 77.5 inside the Strong tier with a 70% recommend rate, and a Steam standing that still holds at 84% positive across more than 46,000 reviews — that is a profile of solid, time-tested, and decidedly not a masterpiece. It never punched its ticket to the 90s club, but it won a base of diehards who genuinely re-run it. For a new IP, that mid-high-score, long-loved standing is harder to earn than a fleeting high.
What is striking in hindsight is how the sales curve kept climbing well after the launch noise faded. A million in two months is a strong opening; crossing 1.7 million on the base game inside a year, then 3 million across the series by late 2021, is the signature of a game that retained players and converted them into evangelists. That is the economics of word-of-mouth, not a marketing blitz — exactly the kind of slow-burn loyalty a publisher cannot manufacture.
Who should make this trip, and who should steer clear
So, to you: is this game for you or not? If you have a friend or two to play with, if you relish the loop of dying to a boss over and over, finally reading it, and beating it together, and if you are willing to sink time into grinding mods and assembling your build, it is practically tailor-made for you — three-player co-op is its full form, and the fun and chemistry live right there.

Flip it around: if you are the run-and-gun type, or you only want to follow one linear thread to the credits and leave, it will likely leave you frustrated and bored. Its difficulty will school you and its content fills out through repeated grinding — two things that land squarely on your sore spots. Especially the lone wolf set on soloing: the spikes get sharper and some encounters are unfriendly to one player, so brace for it. In one line: this is for the player willing to do homework for a hard fight and drag a friend in to grind it out, not for anyone after an easy ride.
Buy the complete edition — and the series it left behind
If you decide to dive in, there is one very practical version note: go straight for the complete edition with both expansions. As covered, the base story is a thin skeleton that needs Subject 2923 to flesh out, while Swamps of Corsus' Survival Mode adds a real long tail to the core loop. Count both in and you get the full shape of this game, not a bare base with half a story and a chunk of play missing.
Worth closing on is what it left behind. It was precisely because this Souls-with-guns-meets-procedural-generation experiment was validated by the market that it directly spawned a sequel — Remnant 2 arrived in 2023 and polished the odd idea into a proper series banner. Looking back, the place of Remnant: From the Ashes is not just a fun co-op shooter; it is a starting point that proved a certain splice could work. It is imperfect — the loot is flat, the repetition is real. But with a brave idea and a rock-solid combat backbone, it cut a path nobody else had walked in 2019, and walked itself into a series. For the right player, the trip is worth it.

Let me get this straight. I like the game a lot. It has it's flaws, but it is a great game. What I don't like (and what is the reason for this negative review) is that the devs intimidate and ban people who leave a negative review. Read this story https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198041571110/recommended/1245150/ Basically, someone downvoted the dlc because he didn't like it. There was nothing personally insulting, just an opinion that the dlc wasn't worth it. The devs responded in the comment section, slandered him, then removed their own comments and banned him. This type of abuse of power means it is a company that you darn well best avoid, even if they'd make the best game possible.Show moreShow less
I am a 54 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single farther to my son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and started playing but I was stuck on what you were supposed to do. I asked my son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my son many happy memories.Show moreShow less
If you see this you got lucky. The devs ban most of the negative reviews. I'll tell you straight up. They lure you in with 2 hours of content and the rest of the game are copy pasted Map sections. Same buildings, Same sewers and same locations placed in the exact same way as if it was randomly generated. but its not. What you are paying for is 2 hours of content reused for hundreds of hours of grinding. Please heed my warning and DO NOT BUY THIS GAMEShow moreShow less
Enjoyed it so much on my Epic Games account [free] I bought on Steam (lol) to support the Devs. Looks like the save file is transferable between the accounts, all my achievements updated on Steam.Show moreShow less
This game has literally zero cheat protection. Read on for why that's a problem even in a coop game. If you hit the 'random join' button (which is the only way to join other games) you can and will be dropped into games where people have hacked their game with infinite money and trait points. Those will be applied to your game without warning, and without the ability to revert those cheats in your own game. I.E. if you randomly join other games for coop, which is your only method to join other games (assuming you don't have 2 friends to play premade groups) then eventually your save is guaranteed to be max-leveled by someone hacking their game. I had this happen twice in one day, causing me to have all traits unlocked with max trait points along with near infinite money and crafting materials. The game itself is a ton of fun, and well worth playing, but given that the developers don't care whatsoever about anti-cheat you're on your own when (not if) your save is maxed out joining random players. I can't recommend a game that thinks that's ok, and I'm a person that isn't even dead set against people hacking their own games however they want. The fact it unlocks on my save without any warning or ability to undo those changes means that this game effectively has no challenge, which is the core concept of the game. This review will remain negative until some sort of mechanic is put in place to mitigate the already rampant hacking in this title. At the moment, your only option if this happens is to delete your save and start over. That's not a real solution. EDIT: Someone kindly provided advice on how to manually back up saves in case this happens to you in the comments. I had to disable comments due to this review being bombed by misinformation and personal attacks, but this information should also be available on the Steam or official forums, or the official discord. I find that solution to be inadequate and was already aware of it, but it probably bears mentioning since it could potentially help others with the game should they buy it.Show moreShow less
My Quick Review Pros: Has what you'd expect from Dark Souls. Estus Flask (Dragon Heart) which is upgradable, Red Eye Crystals (bonfires), BOSS WEAPONS!!, as well as a hub location to teleport back to for supplies/upgrades. The cutscenes are amazing, as well as the voice acting! Has a lot of attention to detail within the game too. Guns can be modded to add an active skill. Really neat system. Death doesn't penalize you. You even go back to full ammo at the checkpoint. Don't let this fool you into thiking the game is easy though. The Multiplayer is a seemless delight where friends on steam can easily join and leave. More Importantly, Everyone Picks Up The Same Drops! Don't know many games that have that but it's really nice. When you're in range of a friend you get bonus exp and such. Friends can revive you and you have maybe a 20-30s window of opportunity. Leveling is kind of slow when you play solo. You only have 3 traits to start with which includes Health, Stamina, and a different skill depending on your class. Playing the game you'll unlock a slew of new traits which really come in handy! Melee weapons are used with just your LMB. Saves on having to swap to it! Cons: Friendly Fire. Melee Excluded. Mobs can hit each other though which balances out. Map loot, from what ive seen (first 4hrs), is slightly scarce but if you look hard enough you'll come across equipment. Finding where to go using the map or the radar is a pain in the ass. Level design is overall bland and looks the same throughout the zone you're in. Makes it easy to get turned around. Buying from NPCs, while in MP, will remove that item from the shop and your friends will not get what you buy. Also note that ammo drops are not shared. Currently no way to communicate with friends online. They just added in-game voice chat but ATM there's no way to disable it aside from adding code to the engine.ini. Discord is the way to go. Notes: Break wooden objects anytime you see them. You'll find a lot of resources! Don't be too shy to use up ammo. Enemies generally drop them and you can get ammo boxes to use in a pinch as a consumable. Very immersive souls-like game with guns and it's done really well. The dodging can seem pretty slow at first but you get used to it quickly. If you join the hosts game, your solo play progress will not be saved. Overall 9.1/10!Show moreShow less
With the lastest patch before the next DLC, which also causes regular crashes each 50 min, it introduced a nice little file called EOS-.dll is 2020.08.13 which launches the EOSOverlayRenderer-Win64-Shipping.exe. What does that do? It is used to connect to EPIC store serves in order to enable crossplay with epic store players, and to send your data to EPIC for "online game capability". Well everyone could just play online fine on STEAM before that mandatory EPIC crossplay patch. Now people regularly crash, have FPS drops, have unreasonable stuttering and crashes out of the blue when the game was just running fine before. I did NOT sign up for this. I brought the game on STEAM and not EPIC. It is beyond scummy to force the EPIC services onto STEAM users. So thanks to this patch the game is unplayable if you want to protect your data. ♥♥♥♥ this game, ♥♥♥♥ those greedy devs. DO NOT BUY. STAY AWAY IF YOUR DATA MEANS SOMETHING TO YOU.Show moreShow less

Remnant: From the Ashes was originally published by Perfect World Entertainment. The parent company Perfect World Co., Ltd. sold Perfect World Entertainment to Embracer Group. The studio have been part of Gearbox Gearbox Publishing which is also part of Embracer Group, since 2021. Gearbox Publishing is also registered as a new publisher. What does this product do? The program activates 2 essential services at the beginning of the product launch. On the one hand, the mandatory IPv6 checks are from Valve Corporation and on the other hand, the Epic Online Service (EOS for short) is activated. EOS stands for forced online mode and "games as a service" mentality. The API includes various services such as authentication, profile management, friends, matchmaking, leaderboards, statistics and not to forget an extensive telemetry service. Called "Datarouter". In everything that has to do with Epic Games, Inc., you have to keep in mind that Amazon is ALWAYS involved, as Epic Games exclusively uses the structures and services of Amazon AWS. As an example active telemetry: Amazon Kinesis: Epic Games uses Kinesis to collect data from players and process it in real time. Amazon DynamoDB: Epic Games uses DynamoDB to store data collected by the datarouter. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2): Epic Games uses EC2 to power the Datarouter servers. Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3): Epic Games uses S3 to store the data collected by the datarouter. Amazon CloudFront: Epic Games uses CloudFront to improve the scale and availability of the datarouter. IPv6 Checks Valve's IP checks are equivalent to captive portal queries and thus telemetry. If a connection is successful, there is a "Success" as feedback. The system was secretly introduced and is active at the client start as well as for various products with the Unreal engine. Crashlytics With the product delivered free of charge there is a Crashlytics service from Epic Games, Inc. The file CrashReportClient.exe should be deleted from the game directory. Who is running the product? Gearbox Publishing Where are the service providers located? Gunfire Games - 7801 N Lamar Blvd Suite B166 - Austin, TX 78752 - USA Gearbox Publishing - 14090 Summit Drive, Suite 110 - Frisco, TX 75078 - USA Epic Games, Inc. - 620 Crossroads Blvd., Cary, NC 27518, USA Amazon.com, Inc., 410 Terry Ave., North Seattle, WA 98109, USA Valve Corporation, 10400 NE 4th St, Bellevue, WA 98004, USA What data is collected The Epic Datarouter is a data processing and analysis tool developed by Epic Games that primarily serves to collect and process data of user behavior and interactions in various applications of Epic Games. The scope of functions of Epic Datarouter includes Data collection: The Epic Datarouter collects data from various sources, including the user interface of applications from Epic Games, APIs and other data sources. Data processing: The datarouter uses the collected data to perform complex queries and analyses. It can also aggregate, transform, and clean up data to optimize for analysis and reporting. Data analysis: The datarouter can analyze data to gain insights and trends and identify problems. It can also create dashboards and reports to give users an overview of key metrics. Data security and privacy: The Datarouter has extensive security and privacy features to ensure that the data collected is safe and secure. Integrations: The datarouter can be integrated with various tools and platforms to export data to other systems or import data from other systems. Overall, the Epic Datarouter allows Epic Games to collect and analyze extensive data on user behavior and application performance to improve the user experience and performance of products and services. Privacy To be honest, there is none. Players give up their data sovereignty completely and as here in the case of Remnant: From the Ashes they are not even informed what is recorded at all, why and who gets the data. Data examples, involved URL's and IPv4 Since the options on Steam are limited, interested parties can find out more about my profile or GameIndustry about my website, on which I have already published connection data, raw data examples, company profiles, screenshots, articles on spyware and unwanted behavior and much more for games and regular programs for 1700 games. As a bonus, there are various filter lists (Adblock for games, websites and programs) with which it is possible to block services such as EOS completely.Show moreShow less
