I don't regret it, but can't recommend it unless there's a big sale. Enjoyable game for the first few hours, but there's no real progression. You can expand your store and your selection, even selling snacks and putting in arcade machines, but none of it gives you a major bump in income. My store at level 20 makes roughly the same money it did at level 10. There's also a lack of "sim" in the sim. You can't set the prices of anything. There are very few random events. The number of decorations and customization options are small. You don't get particularly punished or rewarded for any decision.Show moreShow less

Speaking as someone who actually did this i.e. worked in Blockbuster in the ‘90s (and also a movie theatre) the vibe of this game is so accurate it kinda freaked me out. The tasks you have to do, the annoying customers, the balance between restocking and serving people…. Spot on. If you have any significant memories of this era, this is the game for you. Although at the time, this actual job felt frustrating and annoying… this game makes me want to trade in this current soulless “AI world” and return to better times. To the devs… excellent work. I wish steam had a "maybe" review - I enjoyed my time with the game for a few hours, but was also disappointed by the lack of evolution in the gameplay. As I unlocked things, I didn't feel like anything meaningful really changed in the day to day gameplay. At about 8hrs in (level 13) I've put it down to wait for further updates. Things I enjoyed: A decent basic loop. Open shop, decorate shop, stock shop, serve customers, repeat. The vibe of a 90s video rental store - for someone old enough to have experienced it at the time it gives the nostalgia hit I was looking for. I haven't personally experienced any bugs or crashes, everything seems to run fine. The little immersive elements - phone calls coming in, customers asking to see the manager etc (although I have had the manager request exactly once in 8hrs) Things I was disappointed by: Rentals come with star ratings and critic reviews, but they don't seem to mean anything - I assumed they would be worth more, or bad movies would have a higher chance of being returned broken, or something. Prices and fees can't be adjusted in any way Nowhere to put excess stock (at least at my current stage, which is two thirds through the levels) The returns desk as it is in mid game is absolutely mind numbing. I put an employee on it because doing it myself means I'm staring at the window all day doing nothing else, but the employee is not fast enough to do it all so I still have to help. Some kind of auto rewind system needs to be added much sooner imo. Customer conflicts have no consequences. The phone calls you get are mostly just tickbox exercises. If a customer gets mad, they might throw their video on the floor, but that's as bad as things get. My staff member is sick about 25% of the time and moves at a snails pace. Things I would love to see in the future: Loyalty cards and notable repeat customers Expanded conflicts - at the moment phone calls and customer annoyances don't really mean anything. If not answering a phone call meant you get an angry customer turning up to cause a ruckus, that would be a fun consequence. Ability to upgrade the staff room to improve employees mood and lower sick chance, improve work ethic etc Visual indicators of how my decor and organisation is improving the store. "I like this decor +mood" or "I can't find Plumbers from Space -mood" or something similar. At the moment the tutorial says that decorating will generate more customers but there's no way to know if you're doing a good enough job. Ability to run marketing and promotional campaigns Better rewind/return station earlier in the game Improved employees earlier in the game Ordering stock for drink machine, popcorn machine, additional toppings etc - at the moment their addition doesn't add much and gives me no agency. It has a decent base and imo is currently a fine game, but it's not quite great yet. Some of the quibbles I mentioned may be fixed in the later game with more upgrades but maybe the pace could be re-evaluated because the mid game grind is a bit offputting.Show moreShow less

The game hits a nostalgia bone pretty hard and for the first few hours will bring quite a bit of fun. However unfortunately the gameplay also becomes static very quickly. The issue I find with the game is there isn't much of a feeling of progress. You slowly build up your store and as you level up you unlock something new (usually a new genre of movie) ... however, none of it has a meaningful impact on your income or business. The game suggests that decorations increase the number of customers but even dropping 5 entire days worth of income into decorations (well over $1k), subsequent days make the same amount of money. Dropping another 6 days of income into expanding the store, same outcome. Letting your employee run the checkout while you spend your entire day advertising (handing out flyers), same outcome. You're only ever allowed a single cash register, so customer throughput is limited and fixed. There is some variation in your income with holiday events, weekends, and weather however expansions to your shop don't. You can have a store with 500 - 1000 different videos up for rent, and still less than 100 of them will get rented per day. It's like there are only 40 customers in town, and 40 people can only rent so much. So really the focus of the game shifts more towards decorating a video shop to your liking, rather than to one of running an actual business. I got the game for the business simulator side of things, and not really for decorating. If the game had been more marketed as a store decoration rather than management or simulation game I think my expectations would have been better aligned. I hope that with feedback the developer may make adjustments to allow the business side of the game to actually have growth with progress, but as of today my interest in playing is very low since day 20 plays like day 30 which plays like day 40. My suggestion to the dev would be reward me for expanding my shop, reward me for stocking hundreds of different titles, reward me for having fully stocked snacks & drinks, reward me for keeping on top of rental returns, reward me for managing my staff. Most of all, reward me for what you say you will in the calendar (example, during Halloween I still have shelves full of unrented Horror movies and racks and racks of candy no one bought). I should be able to look ahead and go "Christmas is in a week, I should buy up every Christmas film I can to be prepared" ... instead they rent maybe 10 titles leaving entire shelves packed full and untouched.Show moreShow less

Developers — Before anyone attacks me, I want to say that I genuinely loved this game. The reason I pressed dislike is because there's still a lot of room for improvement. I played the demo as well. Things / Bugs / Exploits to Consider Improving: 1- Broken VHS tapes have no use — you can't do anything with them. Add something — repair them, sell them at a reduced cost, anything. Especially frustrating when the very first renter was an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ NPC who returned my limited edition tape broken. Come on. 2- Customers won't leave the store even if they're not being checked out. The exploit I found was to have my employee return VHS tapes while I hand out templates outside, and only at the end of the day tell my employee to check out like 100 people who've just been roaming around the store. It's easily the best way to make the most money each day, but it's really cheesy and repetitive. 3- The gameplay gets boring, if I'm being real. Yes, I did play for 11 hours straight, and yes, I'm coming back to finish the game — but it starts to feel like all I do is return VHS tapes while my employee handles checkout. That's basically the whole day. There aren't many options when it comes to calls or customer needs in the store. 4- Not being able to change pricing feels like a missed opportunity. Let me do whatever I want — it's my store. The clearance system especially feels pointless, since customers grab every movie regardless of whether it's a new release or not. They'll still rent anything, so there's no reason to clear it out. 5- There's not much to do after level 10 or so. As I said, it becomes very repetitive and nothing new gets introduced. 6- There are a lot of movies I still haven't unlocked — probably around 90% of them — but the game doesn't make me feel like I need any specific one. They all feel the same: same price, same category, same customer reaction. Nobody cares what you give them. There needs to be a major overhaul around customer preferences and the demand for specific movies. That's all for now. I'll edit this review if I find anything else. @Developers, feel free to message me if you need more details on anything here. Have a great day! Great game (^o^)/ EDIT: Suggestions & Ideas: 1-More decorations, equipment, and shelf types — give players more ways to customize and build out their store. 2-The ability to sort movies while holding them — a small quality-of-life change that would make a big difference day-to-day. 3-Weather doesn't really do much right now. It would be great if each weather type gave a small bonus of some kind — maybe a 10% boost to rentals, customer mood, or income. Something to make it feel meaningful. 4-Let customers sit on the couch, and maybe even watch a movie on a TV I can buy. It would add so much life to the store atmosphere. 5-More interactivity around holidays. Right now the holidays outside don't do much beyond unlocking a perk. It'd be great to be able to decorate, run promotions, or do something special to bring in more customers and make those days feel distinct. 6-Add a warehouse to the back office for storing movies. Even better if it integrates into the gameplay in a meaningful way — maybe managing stock, handling deliveries, or something that adds a new layer to the daily routine. 7-Give the shady guy in the back more to do. He has a lot of potential and feels underused right now. More interactions, more variety, more mystery. 8-Employees should be able to pick up movies left on the ground and also remove movies placed on the wrong shelf — right now that falls entirely on the player and gets tedious fast. 9-The shelf movie type should be manually selectable instead of being automatically assigned when you place a movie. Give players the control to decide what goes where. 10-More decorating options for shelves — labels, dividers, theming, whatever it may be. The shelves are a big part of the store's look and they deserve more love. 11-add the option to Upgrade the Reserved Section and maybe even make a small room there, the entrance could be where the Reserved shelve isShow moreShow less

Should set the standard for job simulators/cozy tycoons. It just feels good; the tiny world has detail and life, you've got customization options out of the box, and the game doesn't feel like it was built using random Unity assets clobbered together. Not to mention despite the low-poly style, its got the most diverse/animated NPC's out of any similar game. Now I miss renting VHS tapes.Show moreShow less

I am actually quite shocked this has the rating it does. The biggest flaw with this game and it is a massive one is that expansions and improvements make zero difference. You will be stuck making roughly $250-300 per day regardless of what you do. When you start you have a completely bare store with nothing but a checkout, at that stage I was making around $220-250 per day, now at level 10 with lots of decorations an expansion to my store, concessions, popcorn and a few other things, I am still making $220-250 per day.Show moreShow less
