In today’s China, finding a girlfriend isn’t just about charm, loyalty, or a shared love of hotpot. It’s about your assets—literal ones. If you don’t own a house (preferably in her name), a car (preferably foreign), and have savings (preferably untouched by your parents’ retirement fund), then sorry, bro, you’re not boyfriend material—you’re a walking red flag.
Modern Chinese romance has turned into an auction house, and guess what? You’re the product—and you pay the bill.
Take the infamous “Fat Cat” (胖猫) incident, where a man reportedly committed suicide after spending over 500,000 yuan on his girlfriend, only to be ghosted. Was he naive? Maybe. Was she manipulative? That’s for the court of public opinion. But one thing is clear: love has become a transaction, and when the balance sheet breaks, people die.
Social media is flooded with stories: a man is told, “No house, no talk.” A woman brags online about receiving iPhones, designer bags, or even surgery money from suitors who never got as much as a kiss. “If he’s not paying, he’s not serious,” is a mantra echoed in countless Douyin videos. Meanwhile, men joke bitterly that dating apps are just Taobao with a chat function.
It’s not all women, of course. Many are just as trapped—told from childhood to “marry up,” to seek security. But the growing market of “捞女” (gold-digging women) is real enough to spawn an entire vocabulary. Words like “备胎” (spare tire boyfriend), “工具人” (utility man), and “舔狗” (bootlicker) describe the male role in these emotionally bankrupt arrangements.
Young men, especially in second- and third-tier cities, are checking out. They call it “lying flat” (躺平)—giving up on dating, marriage, or even striving for success. After all, why break your back for a woman who sees you as a bank account with legs?
And society doesn’t help. From Chinese New Year interrogations about your marital status to in-laws demanding bride prices rivaling the GDP of small nations, every part of the system reminds men: your worth is what you own.
Ironically, while men are expected to provide everything, love is not guaranteed. Many report being dumped after handing over assets, or even after marriage, becoming what netizens call “冤种老公”—the ultimate sucker husband.
So, is it any wonder Chinese men say they’re “民不聊生” (the people have no means to live)? They're emotionally broke, financially drained, and spiritually bankrupt—all in the name of love.

Over-rated and over-hyped. The "gold-digger" thing is just click-bait. Overall, it's just an average FMV game, not the best but not the worst either. The story is messy and the male lead fixing the girls is unrealistic. In real life you can't fix other people you can only learn to accept them. Also the morals of the game is what? The game have an interesting premise. But the execution is lacking. You are not allowed to proceed with the choices you want, it's one big narrative you are forced to follow. There are no two or three ways to find a solution - really only one.
For example if character asks to move in with you. You can't actually refuse. If you don't want to spend money on some sort of girls endeavours - you can't refuse. Game basically cucks you.
Interactions with characters are dragged out and feels like any rational human being would choose to exit toxic situations, but unfortunately the story would just end.
The drama in the game is soup opera type of drama. You have lots of choices and majority of them are meaningless. Like will you pay for a dinner, or will you play hard to get, but you don't have a choice - you need to choose correct options.
In the end you need to hook up with unlikable people, whom lied, manipulated and extorted money from you. You are basically a lapdog, who pretends he's hard to get, but secretly wishes to get attention and love from sociaphats. It's a nightmare.
I haven't finished the game and usually in these type of stories at the end you will get some sort of catharsis, a revenge, abusers loosing. But the journey is not worth my time.Show moreShow less
